Came in for the first time today and got a haircut with Deana (I'm so sorry if that's spelled wrong) and I'm obsessed!! I have a mountain of hair and I left feeling like a model. Called to make an appointment with someone who knew how to cut curly hair and could do highlights. Front desk suggested Melinda--no information given other than she was one of their most experienced in curly. Great so far. So drove in from out of town for the appt, it went fine (although she talked me out of highlights and into ballyage, which was my first time with this process), and by the time I was done and leaving to pay, my home security was showing I had a very sick dog at home (she'd just had surgery), so I was distracted when I paid...only focused enough to make sure I added 20% tip (Miranda was very nice!). Got home and saw a text from my bank that $350.00 was taken from my account! Called back right away to get it corrected only to find out the bill was $297.00 for service, plus tip, bringing it to $350.00!!!!!! In what world would you NOT tell a new customer (from out of town) that they were about to drop 3 1/2 Ben Franklins for a hair appt BEFORE they committed??? It was never mentioned. I've been going to high-end salons for years and that price is robbery UNLESS a customer knows about it and agrees beforehand. (included was 2 bottles of product, one for $10 and I think the other was $15, which I didn't want but felt her sales spiel was sooooo over the top that she was really depending on commission for product, even lined up 4 bottles on the counter when I checked out, insisting she was 'just going to leave them there and it was up to me if I wanted them' ***cringe*** I was thinking she REALLY needed that commission on product, so I caved. Little did I know they get paid more than a nurse or doctor for a few hours off work, in addition to working TWO appointments at once, bebopping between the two of us. (I actually offered to dry my own hair since she was juggling clients and DID finish drying my own hair). Buyer Beware... in this new BidenApocalypse, if you're short of cash like the rest of the country, this is NOT the shop for you. It'll blow your grocery budget right out the window and you can't eat ballyage, so..... I've never had to do this in all my life, but from now on I'll ask for a quote before booking an appt, but it won't be at Republic Salon. This practice of sneaking a HUGE bill when there's nothing you can do at the end is nefarious and skeevy and reeks of desperation. A bit of a cheat, if you ask me. I'd post a pic, but I asked FIRST THING to NOT lose the length, and she cut off 5 inches. I recently had an appointment with Sarah for some low lights. I was greeted warmly, temperature taken and offer a choice of beverages. I had a 10:00 appointment and was taken right away. I was going out of town for the weekend and had the sudden urge to get my hair cut. They are usually booked but fortunately I was able to get an appointment when I called same day due to a cancellation. I have been a few times before with various stylists and have always had pleasant experiences, but this visit with Shane was the best yet. I told him I just wanted a trim -- 2-3 inches, but he also made some suggestions on how I wear my hair to make it easier to work with in the morning. He added layers in all the right spots and seemed to be familiar with all hair types. He knew exactly how to get my crazy thick hair look tame. I usually have to style my hair to make it look okay but now I don't even completely blow dry it all the way. With his expert and strategic snips, my hair looks fab every day without much daily maintenance. The salon itself is beautiful and located above Tasty World in downtown Athens. The entrance door is on the side of the building. You have to walk up three flights of stairs to get to the salon, but you will be greeted with friendly faces and offered a refreshment! read more

Republic Salon is a beautiful, modern salon in a gorgeous historic building. On the third floor (above Tasty World), clients enjoy a lovely view of downtown over a drink while sitting at the color bar. The design of the salon is spacious, well lit, modern, clean, and very fashionable. Republic brings Athens an upscale salon like those found in major cities, but less expensive. This is the place to go for people who value the best for their hair! Potties are classy and VERY clean, with neat locks on the stall doors and beautiful sink area. I'm pleased to report that the changing rooms are separate, too. Staff is friendly, prompt and welcoming. Customers range from young & fabulous to soccer moms/dads in for some pampering. My partner and I see Lyric (founder/owner) who has made hair her art. Plan to spend about 2 hours for cut & color, time spent feeling pampered and relaxed. Meredith did my haircut and highlights and I love it! She also gave me some product samples that fit to my hair length and texture. Clare was amazing!! I went in looking to get my layers freshened up and she did an amazing job. She immediately asked me what I was looking for and really took her time to understand what I wanted. She also walked me through what she was doing as she was doing it, which immediately relaxed me (i have haircut anxiety lol). She took time to curl my hair at the end which was a nice surprise, as I have never gotten that much attention to detail at Atlanta salons. My stylist left three black stains down the back of my shirt (which I don't even understand how considering my hair was cut way too short). I called the salon after I got home and noticed, but apparently my shirt being ruined is my problem and I need to spot treat it, which again don't understand this as how is someone supposed to get hair dye out of clothing. I went in for a blunt cut, as my split ends were getting pretty bad, but I felt so nervous that they would do what some other shall-not-be-named salons in Athens had done (i.e. cutting off more hair than necessary). I held my breath and walked-in. One of their hairdressers, Cameron, just happened to have a cancellation, so I was able to get helped right away. She asked me what kind of haircut I was looking for, and I said I was looking for a blunt cut, unless she had a recommendation for something better for easily maintaining long hair. She agreed that a blunt cut was the best choice for what I wanted, so she got started on my hair. She brushed my hair out at her styling chair, and then we walked over to the hair-washing chair things and she washed it there. To be honest, that was the best hair-washing I've ever gotten at a salon. My neck never hurt at any point, she never pulled on my hair, and she even fixed my hair that had gotten overly dry/damaged. She was very warm and friendly, but she wasn't overly chatty, which I personally like a ton. Once she was done washing my hair, we went back to her styling chair. She put in a leave-in conditioner and also something else to protect my hair against heat of the blowdryer + the humidity outside. Both times she put things in my hair, she was very clear about what it was and what it was for, which was really nice. Normally, I'd have to ask what products the stylist is putting in my hair, but I didn't need to do that here. She was very detailed in her cutting, but she was also efficient. I was maybe there for 45 minutes (including the hair washing), but it came out as the best hair cut I've ever gotten with long hair. She didn't take too much hair off, but she managed to get all of my split ends. Plus, my hair just looked so *healthy.* I normally just wash my hair and let it air dry, which leaves it looking alright, but she made my hair look amazing. It was Pinterest worthy hair, lol. I planned to take a picture of my hair when I got back home, but it rained so hard that my hair got wet. It still looks much nicer than I'd normally have it, but it doesn't feel fair to put up a picture of hair that is less than what they can do. My own haircut was $50, which is super reasonable for the quality of everything. I've gotten $80 haircuts that were not even close to as good as this one. Cameron is great, and the Republic Salon uses some really nice hair products. I'm definitely going back! read more

She is so knowledgeable and fun, and she can truly do anything you need. She listens to what you want and knows how to make it happen. I've now been getting my hair cut and eyebrows waxed with Sarah at Republic Salon for almost a year! I love working with her! I have VERY sensitive skin and this has been one of the only places to not make my skin turn beet red after a wax! I'm so glad I found Sarah who is knowledgable in treating and cutting naturally curly hair and I will continue coming back until I no longer live in Athens. Quality Poor to fair Very disapointed with hair cut. I did my homework and read reviews thinking this would be a good place to get a hair cut. My mistake. Now I am trying to find another salon to clean up the $65 & tips hair cut that I just received. Up-date to post. This is the review that wes left on the salons website. The same website that I went to when I was trying to make up my mind where to get my hair cut. With-in two days of the review being posted, the Owner of the Salon called me and asked what she could do to get me to remove my review. When I said that nothing could be done that I had already gone and had my hair fixed, She said that she would refund the cost of my hair cut plus tips if I would remove the bad review. She sent my money back and I removed the review from the salons webpage. Now, that would explain why I only saw glowing reviews about the salon. read more

Disappointing.... Ok. So I've been to the Republic, and I tried over and over again to get a good haircut here. But it seems to me that they don't really specialize in men's haircuts. Sure, all the woman RAVE about this place. But I went here three different times, over a period of a year and a half, and tried three different people, and I never went away liking my haircut. The last one was actually so bad that I went to another place in my home town of Augusta, GA and got it fixed. And LOVED that haircut. I think the reason I kept coming here is the fact that the place IS so trendy, but I really shouldn't have gone here three times. After the second haircut I was so angry that I let my hair grow for a period of several months, until I looked like a rabbi, and tried the place for the last time. I will NEVER go here again. It's overpriced for a town the size of Athens, and I tried the best that they have, shelling out big bucks, for haircuts I really disliked. So... if you're a dude like me, I wouldn't suggest going here. My new hairdresser is in Augusta, GA, and I like her style. That should let you know how hard I've looked for a good haircut. In the end, the place is overpriced, the service is pretty lousy, and they'll try to squeeze you for more money by trying to sell you hair products that you don't ask for. A definite 1 star from me. Sure, a glass of wine at the "color bar" is fine, but I'm paying for quality services, not a trendy atmosphere. After moving to Athens from Atlanta, I was in need of a highlight touch-up, so I did my research and found Republic... I really don't understand why this salon has such high ratings and accolades. It's a nice space, but I was not impressed with their customer service or the quality of my color. I said I was going for natural looking, subtle highlights (which I already had, the roots were just starting to show), and came out with one of those dreaded streaky messes. The stylist said she would redo it for me, so I scheduled another appointment (a week later), and she just put in a different rinse. Still streaky, and still too blonde. I haven't had my cut in a salon for quite awhile. I've been to a lot of places (Asian places, to be specific), and this was my first time at an honest-to-goodness American salon. I mean, I've been to Great Clips, but it wasn't the best thing ever, you know? The only other place I've ever favored was Pika Pika with Jjandi (I'm not sure I spelled that correctly, sorry!), but when I stopped there recently she was no longer working there. Also, it's quite awkward when I don't speak Korean myself. I've only ever been to Asian salons since everyone (that I know) insists only Asians can cut Asian hair... But Brett very much proved otherwise! There are ROWS of hair products upon entry. I'm not sure if they try out different products for each customer, but Brett used Davines Oi line on my hair and it smelled spectacular. They also sell the products in the front area, but I've yet to jump on the bandwagon since I'm still loaded with my own. As a new customer, you have to fill out a form and sit down in a waiting area. I was also offered a beverage, kindly enough. After filling out the form, I was told to go ahead and sit down and wait. I chose to look at the hair products, but Brett immediately called me over, so I had no time! :P We started off discussing what I was looking for (Newsflash: I had no idea. My hair was a tangled mess and I needed it cut by a professional), and he made some recommendations focusing primarily on the fact that he was pretty sure I wanted to keep my length (yep!). We then went off to wash and condition. He doesn't use razors to cut your hair, but does cut it while wet. Afterwards, Brett applied styling products and gave me a blowout. The entire exchange was not awkward by any means. I left with my hair finally looking sane and no longer tangled. There's no choppiness in my cut. Oh, and it smelled really good. Everything was fantastic and I look forward to coming here again, something I haven't said about a salon in years! It'll probably be awhile since I like to upkeep my hair myself, but once it's hopeless again, I'll gladly schedule an appointment with Brett. read more

After no longer being able to communicate effectively with my stylist in Atlanta and a disappointing visit to a salon in Atlanta that had over 100+ raving reviews on Citysearch, I decided to visit Republic Salon. This was the best salon experience I've had in years. Republic Salon is spacious, open, and beautiful. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. They regularly check to see how you're doing and if they can get you anything to drink. There is a wide selection of magazines to read while waiting or having your hair colored. Most importantly, the staff is talented and really listen to what you want. I wasn't entirely certain what I wanted, but my stylist worked to help me figure it out, and I couldn't be happier. I was a frightened student who had only been to one salon for my entire life, and a friend recommended that I try Republic. I did my research, called the salon, and explained my trepidation. I wanted someone to do blonde highlights and a cut. Enter Brett. Brett has been the most wonderful hairstylist and friend for the past three years. He is very patient with my giant head of hair. He does the most beautiful highlights, cut, and blowout. He's also hilarious and kind. The salon itself is really chic. One of the receptionists always offers me a drink when I come in. They are always accommodating when I call to schedule. I've also gone in for blow outs for events, and I have had a great results that surpass blow dry bars in Atlanta. Her vibrant personality and adorable look assured me of this was a perfect match. She not only understood my crazy thick hair but also was able to create EXACTLY what I was expecting for my color! I had to get my hair dyed on pretty short notice, and they managed to squeeze me in with Rizzie before I had to leave town in a week. The color turned out a little spotty, so they booked me another session a couple days later, no charge. The color has been terrific from that day (mid-December) to now (almost February), which is amazing for a red. What was probably my favorite part of my visit was the staff. They were all very considerate, attentive, and genuinely wanted me to enjoy my time there. "Cool atmosphere" aside, they were so nice without being schmooze-y, which is unsettling in such an aesthetic environment. Kept coming to Republic after my favorite stylist left for Model Citizen- my mistake. I stuck with the salon even though I was getting mediocre results for big bucks, but after my last experience ended with my medium brown hair covered in ash blonde highlights( I requested a repeat of my balyage with cooler tones). I was then told there was no time to "fix" it that day other than a quick slap of brown color on the most obviously bad pieces around my face (color applied to dry hair then wiped off with a towel and restyled). The next week I did get it "fixed" at Model Citizen with the amazing Amelia. Republic is a great salon. I was shopping for a new stylist in 2008, shortly after the salon opened, and I randomly chose Shane Davis. Now it's 2014 and he's been cutting my hair for 6 years. I've always let him do whatever he wants to my hair, and I've never been disappointed. He also cuts my husband's hair (which is curly), and about 6 other friends' hair. The customer service is great and I always feel relaxed when I go to the salon. read more

They are an awesome spot, Shelby was totally intuitive about what worked for me and it was very clear it was natural for her . I will be back for sure. BEST salon in Athens, hands down. Not only do the stylists have exceptional talent, the salon itself has an atmosphere that is relaxing and stress-free. The customer service amazed me and I am in love with my cut/color! I highly recommend Salley, especially if you're a blonde. She is AMAZING. Okay so I have been coming to Republic Salon since I moved to Athens and I swore my life on their service and how much I could trust them. Boy, was I wrong. I traveled all the way from my home town to have my hair dyed and cut by my favorite stylist and walked out looking awful. I came in asking for golden-ish blonde hair and a short haircut but what I walked out with was my hair almost to my ears, my bangs far above my eyebrows, and my hair reflecting the color of red/brown. All completely opposite from what I requested. When I walked in I had visual aids, millions of questions, requests for how the cut should be but all of that was ignored. She said the color should fade with time and if it doesn't to call back to have it fixed. She also said that the lighting could give the illusion of it being darker than it was. I walked outside to dark hair and felt mortified so I called back immediately. I was told there was nobody available all day to fix what they had ruined but I could come back in a day or a week to get it fixed. I don't live in Athens so that was not an option for me. I had to drive home and cry for a day until I was able to go to a new colorist to fix the color from red back to blonde. I still have the hair cut to worry about and the red is still shinning through every so often but I was lucky enough to get it as close as possible to my natural hair. If you take nothing else from my review then know this: no matter how prepared you are for a hair appointment you can still be screwed over. I have never experienced this from the salon so I was shocked they even let it happen. My best advice would be to never try something out of their experience. They can do highlights and maybe a trim but they are unskilled when it comes to blondes and short haircuts. I will not be returning in the future. read more

Their complimentary beverages, before and after hair wash and salon atmosphere are also nice. It's triple the cost of Great Clips, but their attention to detail makes it worth it. I loved going to Republic! I've rarely gotten my hair cut at a professional salon (my mom is big on cutting at home) and it was wonderful! The atmosphere was clean, welcoming, and professional. I got an appointment in the morning and, after filling out a short info sheet, Rizzy came and got me. I told her I want to grow out my hair but she can cut it however she wanted. I now have the smoothest layers I have ever had! I've NEVER been so in love with a haircut before! And Rizzy also told me what types of products I could use to decrease frizz and keep my hair healthy. Will be coming back for my future haircuts. read more
