Went in to check on an item that was showing as available for pickup. Couldn't find it on the floor, so I ordered it for pickup, and just a minute later, Jeremiah approached me and asked if I needed help. Fortunately, there was enough stock for him to pull one out and sell it to me, and cancel the online order as soon as it showed up in their system. Expect to wait in line outside to enter the building as they continue to limit the amount of people inside as part of their COVID protocol. My wife and I waited about 20 minutes to get inside so that we could browse for some skiing gear, but unfortunately this branch doesn't seem to carry much in the skiing activity category. I was also looking for a new coat, however, they seemed to have very few in XL size. Staff were around, but I wasn't offered any assistance in finding a coat in my size. Free coffee and hot chocolate on cold days?! Yes, please! One day I came to visit and they were giving hot drinks away... just because! This location has super friendly and helpful staff. Right when you walk in, there are tons of bulletin boards and calendars with yoga schedules, climbing lessons, hiking trails, biking trails, and more! So informative and helpful if you want to get more involved in community and outdoor activities. There are 2 floors here. Downstairs is filled with supplies for camping (tents, sleeping bags, cookware, etc), biking (bikes, bags, water bottles, accessories) and a wide variety of backpacks (camelbaks, osprey, north face, and rei). Upstairs is where most of the men, women, and children apparel is. They have shoes, climbing gear, gloves, hats, you name it. It's not the largest REI I've seen, but definitely not the smallest. One other thing.. it is PRICEY. Clearance tank top for $50 in the winter?! But not surprising if you've ever been to any other REI. Great place for outdoor gear and apparel, but definitely plan on spending some money! read more

Hubs and I have frequented this REI since it opened along with the revamping of North Hills a few years ago. Hubs is an avid biker, and I tag along a lot, so we utilize REI for a lot of our biking needs. We also use it to stock up on all of our camping necessities, as we tend to camp a great deal. We have not found anywhere other than REI that sells quality camping and biking items that we can trust. Sure, the prices are a little more than you would find at your crappy Walmart, but again, the quality is better and if you join the co-op, you receive dividend checks for your expenses and saves you tons of money. We have also purchased items such as ecovessels, Siggs, and lunch coolers for daily use and have not been disappointed. We have had many of our lunch items that we use daily for over 5 years now and they are all still going strong. The staff is always very knowledgeable and helpful upon each visit. read more

Because of the Doughman Challenge, I find myself in need of a new bike. Immediately I thought of REI. But walking into REI looking for a bike for a possible one time event is like walking into Coach and looking for a purse for one weekend in Vegas. Nevertheless, it did not deter me away from "simply browsing." This store is pretty impressive in term of size and selection, I can see why this could be a lot of people's first choice instead of Walmart Sports section. Of all the REI locations in the Triangle, this is the least useful to me. It's really light on the square footage, and it's also split over two floors... so if you have mobility challenges, you're going to have a hard time getting around in this store (between the more tightly cramped aisles and displays, and the stairway). They also have almost no paddling supplies here to speak of. I work a short walk from this location so I do try to go here when I need things. But I've found I'm much better off getting in the car and driving to Cary, which offers a MUCH better REI experience. read more

I love REI. I can wander around the aisles for hours taking daring camping trips and going ice climbing in my imagination. My first reaction to a North Hills REI location was "what the heck are the North Hill yuppies going to do with REI?", but the location has proven itself a very capable outfitter. The staff their have always been very friendly to me, and the selection is almost as good as the Southpoint store (and markedly better than the Cary location). My only beef with North Hills is the byzantine parking, but that's not the fault of REI. read more

Really appreciated how helpful the staff at REI were when I went in to make a couple purchases. Truth be told, I'd never been to an REI, at least not that I can remember, but my family purchased many REI products over the years when I was growing up. Most of them were purchased during the day of purchasing catalogues, since we lived on the Outer Banks. But in February I went in with a purchase. I needed a good raincoat and couldn't find anything at Target or Walmart. I also needed some good, reasonably priced water repellant shoes. The staff helped me find both at affordable prices. We looked around at some other items too, but there was no need so I stuck with my two purchases. The raincoat was really awesome. Not only is it purple, my favorite color, but when I needed to condense it as I was traveling, I could tuck it into a pocket and latch it onto another bag. The shoes were not only great for the rainy season in Zambia, but also very comfortable. I've since used them to hike in NC, upon my return. My only real complaint about REI is that it's really expensive. I loved the staff though. They were very helpful and friendly, but not overbearing. They also really knew their stuff! Bought a Fitbit at REI on the recommendation of my niece. I am a senior and not the greatest techi. I can't sync it up with my laptop and when I try to sync it up with my tablet, I get a message, date and time are incorrect on your phone. Oh I am on my tablet by the way. Save your receipts if you buy a Fitbit. I have traveled across country and now have this 150 dollar plastic/rubber band with a useless chip in it. read more

Visited the REI North Hills today out of curiousity. Store carries everything you may need for outdoor activities. Inventory is so extensive that it is housed on two floors. Need hiking gear for the Appalachian-they have it. Need camping gear for Yosemite-they have it. Gonna ascend K2- they have it. Only opportunity I encountered was at check out. While standing in line, I overheard a service person giving a detailed explanation about joining the REI club. I asked my cashier, Sydney, about the same. She was not nearly as interested or positive about the program. Consequently, I did not join. Opportunity lost. Will keep them in mind for future outdoor needs. read more

Not pleased at all with this location! We went in today to purchase a pair of Chaco sandals and some Patagonia baggie shorts. They had a pretty good selection of shoes but the service was horrid! They were great at fetching the shoes but that was it. Several folks, myself included were having issues adjusting the sandals. The guy working just stood there and did nothing. One gentleman finally asked him to help and he said "Yeah, not really sure how to adjust them. I only work here one day a week. Sorry. Maybe my co-worker can help you." Really? The co-worker was no where to be found. My son, who loves these sandals started offering to help. All four folks he helped bought shoes. We then went to the clothing section to look for shorts. No sizes to fit could be found and no help either. We continued to wait for help and was finally able to snag someone. When asked if they had and additional shorts she replied, "Probably not, I can't check because my device is not charged. You would be better off going to Great Outdoor Provisions" Really? I was shocked! The only reason I did not rate this store a one star is because of the selection of shoes and the willingness to go and get shoes for customers to try. read more

Great selection of outdoor gear and clothing. Very helpful staff. We just bought hiking boots, and the woman helping us was knowledgable and patient. Don't know about prices, since we don't have a lot to compare it to. Parking isn't the easiest, and may require some walking, but we didn't mind. I went in to replace the asolo boots I got from them a year ago because the bottom sole had become delaminated. They could not help me with a warranty on the boots because I did not have my receipt. So I decided to buy a new pair. They were out of my size but told me they could order some in. I am a size 11.5 so it is not too unusual. When attempting to order the boots the young lady was much more interested in selling me a membership than helping me order the boots. Once I got past telling her multiple times I was not interested in a membership she asked me for my credit card to purchase the boots. I asked her if it was a stock size, which it was, and why I had to pay for something you stock and are out of at the moment. I told her I would like to try them on before I purchase them. She told me the Cary branch had some in stock and that I could drive over there. She could not tell me when they would be getting more in. She basically said there was nothing she could to help me unless I paid for the boots or went to Cary. Unfortunately for her there is something I would much rather do which is purchase them any where but at REI who obviously cares so little about customer service. read more
