I was in a bind today and needed to find a fish scale. I work across the street and decided to see if they'd have any. They didn't, but were great in directing me to a shop that was able to fill my needs about 10mins away. They have a HUGE selection of Patagonia goods as well as camping/living essentials like Yeti tumblers. I found the better sweater in the color I'd been eyeing for a while and was able to get it! All the brands that I saw are QUALITY stuff- brands that stand behind their goods when life happens. Lots of great outerwear options whether you're hiking a trail or just down Franklin St. Really great and friendly staff. Will definitely be back to browse more. read more

A couple of days ago I had an hour to kill before meeting friends for dinner in chapel hill, so I decided to stopped by great outdoor provision to browse the fly fishing equipment. The fly fishing department is great. The person who manages that part of the store, Jim, is extremely knowledgable about the sport. I learn something new about fishing every time I talk to him. While I enjoy picking his brain, he gets me way to pumped up about fishing. After a long fishing discussion with him I usually spend way more $ than I initially intended. However the equipment, flys, and instruction all proves to be very valuable when angling, and has help me to become a better fisherman. All items at Great outdoor are reasonably priced in comparison to REI. Definitely a good spot to pick up your gear for your next outdoor adventure. read more

This is outdoor store heaven! Loved the decor and the setup of the store. It was easy to browse and easy to find the particular things you were looking for. It was nice to be immediately greeted by a friendly staff member when you walk into the store and then left to browse without being asked by tons of people if they can help you find something. Prices seemed competitive too! Parking is a bit of a hassle to get in and out of when you go on a Saturday...but that is my fault! Overall - GREAT STORE! read more

There is basically one thing I care about regarding this place - They have Vibram Five Fingers shoes in abundance. They have a deep stock, and that to me is invaluable. Townsend Bertram also has VFF's , but in very limited quantities and it's never certain when and if they are getting new stock in. I know that this place comes off as if it's a chain, but it only has 5-6 locations total, and all of them are in North Carolina. read more

I have always been a REI guy myself but a bunch of my friends kept telling me I had to stop in here and check it out so I figured I would give it a shot. Great Outdoor Provision company is basically the same as REI but they have less stock and since they don't have a membership program like REI does the prices are a bit higher. One thing this location has that is better then REI is the selection of equipment for young kids. For the most part its great that they are here and will be my second stop to locate something I just can't wait to have shipped to me, if REI is out of stock. read more

I have been shopping at this store for 7 years. I came to the store based on a recommendation from a friend that this was a great place to get fly fishing equipment and advice to fishing in the area. It has certainly been that. Service has been great and Jim is one of the areas experts in all things fly fishing. So I have bought lots of flies, two kayaks, 3 fly rods, waders, boats and even luggage just because of the great service from Jim and Chad. But the main reason I go into the store is fly fishing. Sadly I have seen the fly fishing part of the store get smaller and smaller. My fly fishing friends have also commented on that. One friend said he use to go into the store all the time for fly tying materials but doesn't anymore because it is not often stocked with what he needs. We all want to support this great store but whoever is in charge of ordering needs to understand that there is a large community who go in for fly fishing stuff. We may leave with other stuff but what brings us in is fly fishing. Please bring this department up where it should be. I promise you will bring more people into your store. BUT let me say again, the sales staff is great. (Note - if the fly shop was more robust there would be five stars. If it gets smaller I probably won't be coming in anymore) read more

This store has a nice cross section of outdoor products and I think they do a good job selecting the latest in brands. I went in just to browse and no one asked me if I needed help. This could be good or bad for them but I wasn't interested in buying so on that day it was good. However, there was plenty of staff so I'm sure if I needed help they would oblige. read more

This place is only ok. They are really the only place I can pick up fly tying material near my house at all and their selection isn't great. They downsized their fly fishing shop recently, and I just don't really have faith buying other stuff anywhere other than REI. If they didn't have fly fishing gear I wouldn't shop here. read more

Ok, Five stars again to the staff at the CH Great Outdoor Provision Company. My son dropped his hydro flask that we bought last year and the loop top split in two. I brought the bottle in, showed them the top, and they promptly went to the back and came out with a new top ... complimentary. Thanks for making being a mom a bit easier!!! read more
