My daughter has an internship this summer that will be requiring her to be outdoors for the majority of the time. A super helpful and sweet employee named Diane helped her with all of her needs. My daughter got everything on her list and was very happy with the sale prices. I felt like Diane was our personal concierge as she helped us for at least a half an hour. Robert helped us with the backpacks as well. Another nice employee. As with my prior visit many years ago, the staff was helpful and not pushy, which is always huge for me because I can't stand pushy people. Diane, let us know about this great credit card that REI has and the great bonus that goes with it - you get a $100 gift card to REI when you spend outside of REI (any amount!) within a two month period. I love Rei for its products and staff who are typically knowledgeable, friendly and outdoor enthusiasts. This store is different than any other REI store I have ever been to. The women who work there are cranky and outright rude. They are argumentative and disrespectful, and not helpful at all. I highly doubt they hike , camp or even exercise . Wow what a store. My friend is going on an international bike trip and need to get everything from bike shorts, shoes, and travel bag. They had it all. And the service was incredible. We had to go to king of Prussia to pick up the right size shoe. The sales professional in New Jersey.made sure the shoe size was available and wrote down everything we would need to get that item once we got to the store. THE KING OF PRUSSIA store was just as incredible. The sales associates are attentive, helpful and friendly. Love love love this company. I bought a bike. No seriously, I have entered a bike race and up until last week, I didn't own a bike. In fact, I have not ridden a bike in 15 years or more. I went in on a Saturday morning and had the attention of the entire bike department. They listened to my needs and concerns, fitted me for the right size bike. I test ride one....it was ok, but it didn't feel good. I test rode another and boom! SOLD. I just knew this was the one. I named my bike Brad, we are very happy. The nice fellas at REI even helped get Brad into my car. I couldn't be happier. No pushy salesmanship, no 'up selling', no foolishness - I love my new bike and would recommend REI strongly to anyone looking to buy one. read more

Purchased a pair of Hokas and was told when I purchased them if I joined the REI membership then I could return them no questions asked if I was unhappy with them. After 5 months of wearing them, they started to fall apart - the rubber on the soles were breaking off. I brought them in and they were rudely denied. I just wanted to exchange them for a new pair. The manager rudely stated if I was unhappy with the REI membership she would "be happy" to cancel it and make sure I didn't get my five months worth of 10% back. I am *finally* heading on my first camping trip since a handful of years ago. Since an option for going on the water came up, I was told to look into a life vest for my pup. I popped in this store when they first opened up this morning. Walked in, roaming around just for a couple of minutes when a really nice associate asked me if I needed help finding anything. We headed straight over the the pet section and there was just 1 life vest left, which happened to be in her size and is the one I had been researching. It was meant to be. Next up- freeze dried food. So I bought a bunch of different kinds in hopes of liking a couple of them. Also, if they're tasty, I'll buy a couple for an emergency kit. This guy also pointed out bug spray and something safe for the dogs too, which I really appreciated him helping me find. read more

I was about to get in the checkout line and an REI employee approached a man besides me and asked him to please cover his face; he had a bandanna that was on his chin. She went on to explain that this was the 3rd time she had to ask him to keep his mask above his nose. I immediately approached her and thanked her for enforcing the store policy and doing her best to keep everyone in the store safe. Moments later the man had his mask off again, when I asked him to put it back on I was asked by the REI manager to stop "causing a commotion". After I explained what was happening and pointed out the man took off his mask again, I was asked to leave. The man without the mask was allowed to stay. I wrote an email to REI corporate and received a call from a regional manager who apologized but could not explain why REI did not enforce their own/and NJs Covid policy. He simply said a mistake was made and he would follow up with management at the Marlton location. I will never return. read more

RIDICULOUS: THREE TRIPS FOR ONE BAG OF ITEMS. I love REI but I don't know what the problem is with this location. I came in to use my annual dividend when I'm told, after ringing everything up at checkout, that the person who's name the account is under (my father) has to be there. Or that I have to have the dividend card-which no one in my family has received. Even though the account has my email registered with it I cannot use the dividend. Fine. I place items on hold, under my fathers name. An hour or so later he goes to pick it up. I get the receipt on my email and it shows he bought one jacket-not an item on hold under his name. I call him and he his livid. Says everyone at this location is incompetent. I call and ask if I may return the jacket and get the proper items I had placed on hold. They say now that my father has been in it will be no problem. I go, exchange goes smoothly and the cashier is apologetic except that the he doesn't ask if I would like to pay with a different card, doesn't offer any item on discount or a coupon or even a small gift card to be used later. Customer service 101: I now have no reason to return to this location. read more

Literally the absolute worst customer service I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. Me & my husband spent over $1000 purchasing items for our upcoming road trip that we have been preparing for for a very long time. We opted for curbside pickup at this REI, our first time buying from them. When we arrived & saw how large our purchases were in person as they started to bring them out, we expressed our concerns that they would not fit in our car as anticipated. It had started to rain & the employees instructed us to take our cooler out of our car because they said everything could fit. We were concerned but trusted their judgement. They put our large purchases into our car & they did NOT fit, the trunk couldn't close & our cooler was still not in the car because they had instructed us to take it out. After they put in the items & they didn't fit, they went back inside the store & left us standing there outside. They saw not everything fit in the car & that we were stranded in the rain & went back inside & left us in the pouring rain. We could not install our purchases on top of the car because it was raining so hard. I asked them if I could use their bathroom as I have a severe bladder condition (keep in mind I wouldn't ask if it wasn't an emergency & of course I had a mask on), and he rudely said "No", he didn't say sorry or anything, just "No", after we spent $1000 & were stranded in the pouring rain. I said "Are you serious?" & then he said "Yep" & he went back inside. They never checked on us, never offered assistance. We had to call their store (even though we were right outside of their store) just to speak to them. We asked them if we could leave the largest item with them & pick it up tomorrow because we literally were unable to move our car, the lady on the phone said she would ask the manager & instead of asking just said "actually no we can't" without even asking the manager. We had to call a family member & ask them to come drive to us (an hour away) to pick up the items in their truck so we could leave. The employees remained inside the whole time, occasionally staring at us out of the window, never once checking on us. No one was apologetic or kind at all, even though we spent an enormous amount of money & were first time customers. Some of them even walked out to leave work, including the manager, & did not even glance in our direction...even though we were right in front of their store. If I could leave them zero stars I would. read more

I purchase brand name items at the REI store when I could buy them online directly from the manufacturer (with no benefit in pricing I might add...) simply to support the REI co-op mission. This is a terrific organization. Brand selection is outstanding. The variety of physical activities represented is terrific and rivals most other outdoorsy retailers. The one-time "co-op" membership fee delivers eternal perks; sales, etc. REI also organizes workshops and events. read more

First time at REI in Marlton. On a mission to pick up some chairs. Very impressed with all the gear and displays they have. Picked up a few low camp stowaway chairs for concerts. Regularly $44.50 they were on sale for $32. Great chairs come with a bag with 2 handles for easy transport. Pleasant staff and quick checkout. I love REI. Their employees are well-informed, not pushy, helpful, knowledgable, friendly, and patient. I've been to this particular location several times and each time I've not only learned a lot about their products but walked away impressed with their customer service. Prices here won't be the lowest, but you should be able to make a well-informed decision based on questions you ask and the suggestions they make so that you don't walk away with either something that's more than you should afford or with buyer's remorse. If you're patient in waiting for an employee to help you (esp during the busy seasons) then it'll be all worth it knowing that you're getting great info to make the right decision for your purchase. read more

Came here with a friend so he could return a pair of boots. The boots were in bad condition but they were less then a year old. REI credited him since he was a member. He got a new pair without hassle. As for the store, its a decent size. Compared to the REI in east hanover i felt like it was bigger. But at the same time. i feel like East hanover had more products. read more

While preparing for a big trip the store representative knew exactly what questions to ask, was able to give me different options and personal recommendations based on his own experience. I have always been a fan of the REI chain. This review is specifically for the customer service for this store in Marlton, NJ, and not for the chain overall. I called the Marlton store to add new bindings to my new snowboard. Should be an easy job. My phone call was immediately connected to the ski and snowboard shop after request. The guy on the phone made it sound like it's not a big deal and I would be done in less than 1 hour, no drop off necessary. Which gave me the impression these guys are here to service and do know what they are talking about. Sadly, the REI at Conshohocken, PA did not react this way, and I actually called the Conshie first, walking away disappointed and luckily called the Marlton store afterward. The Conshie store made it sound like a really big deal when I asked them to do a simple binding on a brand new snowboard. They said it would take all the way until 2 weeks later since they are really busy, and that I would have to drop off my board for them to do the binding fitting?! I would think they would also need me to be there in person to make sure they fit with my boots... When I asked for a referral elsewhere as to where they can do this immediately, he didn't even other referring me to the Marlton store but to a non-REI store. When I had arrived in person, the lady at the ski and snowboard area was immensely helpful and accommodating. Although tides have changed in person - I couldn't get it done on the day of, they did ask when I needed this by and said they would be able to expedite it for me as I was leaving the country in a few days. She also explained to me on the benefits of being a lifetime member for only $20 one time fee. Score! Thumbs down to the Conshie store, thumbs up to the Marlton store! read more

Amazing store for any sort of outdoor activity. I went specifically for hiking apparel but they had biking, kayaking, rock climbing, etc. I would recommend this store to anyone looking for outdoors equipment. I would also recommend paying the $20 to become a lifetime member. You get multiple perks but one main one is the 10% rebate on all purchases. I spent $500 on hiking gear for my wife and I so paying the $20 membership got me a $50 rebate. The rebate is at the end of the year so you do have to wait for it. But it's either a store credit or you can request a check and just take the cash. Side note on the $500 hiking gear, it's easy to spend a lot here in general because the prices reflect the brand and quality they sell. I did buy 2 sets of hiking boots and an osprey backpack so if you know anything about hiking that's actually not too bad. They sell at fair prices but don't think you're going to go to a store and only spend a couple bucks. read more

I hate this store. Worst customer service ever. They're so proud that they're a co-op store, when all that means is the employees feel empowered to argue with the customers. The checkout line was not clearly marked and my wife and I were scolded by a manager for standing in the wrong spot, without so much as an acknowledgment that there were no signs indicating where to stand. If you want overpriced merchandise that's being peddled by employees who act like they're doing you a favor, then this is your store. read more

About a week or so ago, I had one of the best customer service experiences that I have ever had at a retail store. I stopped in to check out backpacks for a two week Central America trip that I am going on. I'm not the outsdoorsy type and I knew next to nothing about backpacks other than my friend was telling me that I needed one since we would be hopping around to multiple locations, including taking small planes and water taxis and may need to lug our stuff for a few blocks. The sales associates Bryan was awesome (and he is super cute). The poor guy spent over an hour with me and my clueless girlfriend who I brought along just so that I wouldn't be alone in this purchase decision. Bryan asked me some questions to determine what type of bag would be best. I told him that I didn't want to spend a lot and am a wimp when it comes to strength. He made some great recommendations, looked up specifics about different bags and even filled up the bag I liked most with pillows to help me see what it would feel like. I had no idea that bags even came in sizes (like small, medium, large, etc depending on your height). Bryan helped with adjusting the straps and showing me how to properly put on a backpack, take it off and pack it (Who would have known you put the heaviest items in the middle?!) Bryan also helped me out with some other products I was looking at. He is probably the most knowledgeable person I ever met when it comes to bug repellant. What I really like about REI compared to their competition is that they have a knowledgeable staff that can really help you out when deciding on a particular product. And they are so eager to help and don't make you feel like a bother. And I like their selection better than any of the other places I checked out. I went to a competitor and they had less than half the amount of backpacks to pick from and the staff did not want to be bothered. I am really happy with the purchase I made at REI and so glad I bought my stuff from there. read more

Where to begin with REI, how about a little history. I was introduced to REI by my brother about 4 years ago out in Colorado on our road trip from Chicago to the Grand Canyon for a week long back packing trip. Young and foolish, i saw no significance about it (even though it was the mother store of all REIs). To me, it was just a big store with a lot of out-door "stuff" and a rock wall to try out gear. big whoop right...again, ignorant to the culture, i was wrong about this place. I over looked the quality of service, product, atmosphere and much more I that can not put in words. **for my actual review skip to the last paragraph** After several back packing trips ranging from the Grand Canyon AZ to the White Mountains in NH, it was time to get my own gear, for me. No more borrowing others gear. I first stopped at a local Sporting Goods store in town but they were of no help. My brother insisted I find a REI store and go there. So i whipped out the smart phone, googled the closest REI and off to Marlton I went. Welp, after a short hour drive from the Jersey Shore, i went from a "wall-mart" to a "Tiffany." (yeah i know the two aren't the same typa store but you get the gist of what i am trying to say.) Right from my first step into the store i was greeted with nothing but smiles. I went in the store with intentions of getting a back-pack, tent, sleeping bag and a book on the Adirondack Mts. (my next trip). Focusing on the most important, i went right for the packs. I was overwhelmed by the variety of bags by style, size, and price range. After my first "im lost" scratch on the forehead, a sales associate by the name of Bryan came over and asked if i needed help. After educating me on packs and trying on half a dozen packs, he fitted me for the right one. We put some Lbs in the pack so i can get a feel for it as we went onto the next items, tents and sleeping bags. Another hour went by between the tents and sleeping bags, forgetting i had a 30lbs pack on my back. Guess that is the right pack huh! After some time with the tents and sleeping bags, i hiked my way over to the shoe section where i was again, greeted with a great smile. Then, a pair of Vibram Fivefingers (should be "five toes" but thats just me) caught my eye. Seen many with them but never tried them on. The sales associate fitted my feet and got me the right pair, for me. She taught me how to put them on without getting frustrated for she has a pair of her own and knows the first troubles of getting them on. Once they were on my feet, they didn't come off till i got home. Yeah, i got em, they are great! I could go on for paragraphs and paragraphs about my experience with this store but this isn't a blog now is it. So, with out further ado, my rating for this REI is a 10-10. I was greeted with a warm welcome and felt at home. I didn't feel intimidated by my lack of knowledge on the subject matter. I was educated by those who truly enjoy what they do and their surroundings. It makes the shopping experience that much better. What i liked most was the emphasis the sales associates put on YOU, the customer at hand. No one customer is the same and they understand that. They focus and fit everything for YOU. The store is all about the customer at hand and that is what sells. I got the right pack, for me. i got the right five-"toes," for me. I spent a little more than what i was planning on but i am sure it was a good and long lasting investment. I also signed up for the REI Member card witch has an abundance of benefits. And, the best part about it... if you do not like your product or something rips/breaks/etc. it can be returned or replaced no questions asked, no receipt, no problems. Drove here from Brick to shop for ski equipment. Bryan informed me that they haven't stocked alpine equipment for the past two seasons. (Website should delete downhill icon). He suggested, since I drove so far, I try D & Q in Cherry Hill in order to do some research regarding boot fit. (My husband joked to me that it reminded him of Macy's sending customers to Gimbels in "Miracle on 34th Street."). I purchased a membership before I left. First off the staff here at REI is great. REI has an amazing customer service policy and evidence of that can be seen in the Marlton store. I have been coming to this location for several years now and have always found the store to be very clean and well stocked. As far as stock goes if you are looking for some major brand outdoor equipment then you should have no problem finding it here and a staffer to help point you in the right direction. Unfortunately the fact that this is a big box store does knock a star off the review. Look, REI is great for a majority backpackers/campers, but it does not cater to those that are looking for alternatives to mass produced gear from TNF, Mountain Hardware, etc... While this is a product of its business model (understandable if it wants to stay in business) I am a fan of variety and if you are looking for cottage gear or smaller manufactures then you need to look elsewhere. That being said I still frequent the store to stock up on consumables and smaller pieces of gear. + Customer service, REI Co-op, staff, store layout, pack and clothing selection. - Lack of lesser known gear manufacturers, shoe selection, a bit pricey read more
