I had a very unusual key which I needed to have copied and every other locksmith whom I called, which was at least 20, just flat-out refused to even try to help me solve my issue. Sure, I could have spent a lot more and pulled out the cylinder or remove the entire locking mechanism from the piece of heavy equipment but luckily I recalled Redfield's. Well in all honesty, I didn't recall them, until after I was reminded, but another locksmith about 15 miles away said hey if you get into downtown at all you should check out redfield's. Now I had worked with Redfield before with some apartment buildings that I owned, namely they helped me to develop a master key system with individual keys for my tenants and on my beautiful Coastal home they installed virtually pick proof locks and secondary security measures to make my home fairly impenetrable to all but the most determined humans who might want to gain entrance, probably using heavy equipment. Anyhow, they found a key that had a similar slot and sizing and they did some custom modifications and made me a key which, although it did not look the same, it worked the same. Now I have more than one key for this piece of heavy equipment that I just had shipped in from out of the country and I feel a lot better about things in general. All of this for under $10. I would say not only are these guys some of the best in the business, these gentlemen are THE best in the business when it comes to skill set and service. I really like this place! Don't go to Home Depot - Go here instead! They have really cool keys to pick from and I think that they are around $3.50. The guys there are super friendly. I had to come to this lock and key as they were the only choice provided by my landlord. They last minute canceled their first appointment. I spoke to Dax on three separate occasions for a quote, appointment and detail of services needed. He took it upon himself to key an extra door not quoted or asked for. He apologized and said he would put the old lock back on. But oops ten minutes later he forgot he threw away all the pins. His response I'm only charging you 21.50 for his mistake. Thank you Dax if the your mistake was only 21.50 why couldn't you eat those costs. After he realized his mistake he called my landlord, what is she supposed to do for him? I am the one paying? I ran in with one set of keys. Five minutes later, I ran out with two sets. The lady working there was sweet and made the 3 keys right in front of me (no having to return, yay!). It turned out to be $8 total with an extra coiled key ring I bought. She didn't have cash so she let me pay with a credit card. It's a good mom-and-pop store. Making the key is one thing but getting it to work properly in your lock is a different story. These guys get it right every time. And perhaps that might be just what we would expect, but with them it is so much more. How can I get so excited about a locksmith you ask? I walked in there having a really crappy day. He was super kind and nice to me. Impossible not to like the guy. And then I told him that I needed to mail the key off to Santa Barbara. He said, "here let me give you an envelope and stamp free." I mean really! How many people would do that? I would drive over half an hour just to have this guy make keys for me. If you're going to give your business to somebody, you might as well give it to a nice guy. They don't make him much better than him. Excellent service. Prompt and efficient. I would not consider them pricey, although they are not cheap. However you do get what you pay for and they are worth it whether it comes to copying keys or replacing locks/cylinders. I was visiting Rite Aid on 5th avenue in San Diego when I realized I had locked my keys inside my vehicle. I always carry a spare in my purse but I was in a rented car and didn't have an extra copy. The clerk in Rite Aid walked me over to Redfield's Lock and Key (a half a block away) and I shared my story. I was told the amount I would be charged if this company walked over to Rite Aid parking lot and opened my car door, which I was agreeable to. However, one of the owners spoke up and asked if I had AAA car insurance and I confirmed I did. They suggested I call them because there would be no charge for them to come out and unlock my door. What a generous suggestion. Oh, BTW, I left my phone in the car so I didn't have that either. The owner, Dax Beno gave me his phone to use, then took it back and made the call to AAA himself knowing the exact location of my vehicle, my insurance card info and so much more. They offered me a soda and chair. They were both so nice and generous to me. I wouldn't have anyone else make keys for me, put in new locks in my home or unlock me from a locked vehicle.
