I came here because I had a groupon so my expectations were not that high to begin with. I went in wanting a short even blunt cut. I appreciated that my stylist took the time to sit down with me to discuss what I wanted done with my hair. Unfortunately the cut did not turn out how I anticipated. She cut my hair at the front much shorter than the rest of my hair and she could not figure out how to make it blend with the rest of my hair. Instead she kept touching the hair and trying to place it just right. She continued to make attempts to fix it and continued to trim it even shorter adding even more choppy layers to the hair. I asked her to stop so we could discuss a solution. I asked if she had an suggestions on how to fix the hair and her response was she did not know how to cut my hair. They get one star because they didn't make me pay and told me that I could get a refund on the Groupon because several people prior to me have been able to do the same. I don't mind driving an hour to this salon because I always leave happy. Rita and Kaylin are miracle workers with color. I used to have to redo my color often because it turned red to quickly. This isn't the case anymore. My color lasts longer, and.. to be honest... they should charge way more for what they do. I'm highly frustrated. I called two weeks ago and got an appointment for today. I asked specifics about pricing and dates and times and even took down the persons name (Rita). I put the appointment in my calendar immediately. I then in good faith took off work to make my appointment and showed up and she had no record of it in the system at all, not even the wrong day but none at all. I have a super busy travel and work schedule and this is just unacceptable. Would not recommend it all. She asked me to come back the next day but did not offer anything for the huge inconvenience. I used a groupon to get a haircut from Megan, and even with semi-low expectations (it was a groupon of course), it was beyond an awful experience. During this time of Covid, they had posted rules on their door, but did not share these with me when I booked the appointment just the week prior. In fact, the really short /sharp and not so personable receptionist reiterated "no kids under 12 can come with you!" several times, even though I had no intention of bringing any kids. This is an extra weird statement to make when the sign on your door says nobody can come in with you. Luckily I was covid-prepared; but it's probably good practice to share this information with your guests as they are booking their appointment. Upon entering, they did check my temperature and give me gloves which was great; but then they offered me coffee and water despite rules to wear a mask. This guesture just seemed like they were checking covid boxes but not really creating a workplace of safety. Then, they had me wait for 30 minutes past my appointment time (which I eventually went to my car to wait, for safety reasons). Once they were ready for me, they sat me right next to the other person getting their hair done, despite us being the only two in the salon - not the most comforting during Covid, especially once they started blow drying both of our hair. Aside from Covid issues and the long wait, the hair cut was atrocious, to which the hairstylist said "your hair is just difficult." I have never been told that before, and when I got home and ended up straightening my hair (she made it wavy even though I told her I always blow dry it straight), it was clear the cut was jacked up. The angle was not straight, nor was the layering blended. I have shoulder-length hair, and don't want to go TOO much shorter to get it fixed, so this kind of stinks. My sister and I spent most of the afternoon with Ms. Rita, and she was an amazing stylist. We actually scheduled appointments for haircuts only ....but she was kind enough to offer additional services (color and highlights). The services and conversations were positive, humorous and thoughtful. She took her time with both of us and ....then she even offered styling tips so we would have a better chance of recreating the look once we left the salon and were at home on our own! We left feeling pampered and hopeful we could look this good everyday! It was not an enjoyable experience. I have never had such a painful brow wax. It has been 6 hours since getting it done and I am in pain. A layer of skin was taken off. Now I am left with red, painful marks under my eye brows. Additionally, I have never had to stand for someone to trim my hair. I like to look forward to my haircut. DO NOT GO HERE!! (I say this based on a terrible highight/color episode I had, I didn't get a cut there, but am glad it worked out that way). I have never in my life written a bad or even upset review about a person or location, and I am 34yrs old. However, I have to because I feel like maybe I will save someone else from my awful experience and results. I found Red Salon Raleigh through Groupon, as I am a Mom of two and prefer to save where I can and still hopefully pamper myself sometimes. The groupon was for a full highlight, cut, wash, blowdry and style so I figured, why not? I made my appointment with the salon owner, Rita, and was right on time. We sat down for a good 15min consultation; we sat in the wonderful natural light she has through her windows, she checked out my hair, I gave her my very minimal highlight/coloring history, and showed her around 5 photos of what I DID want my end result too look like (as well as verbally explained it), 5-6 photos of what I absolutely did NOT want (for highlights/color) and verbally explained why, and then showed her about 4-5 photos of the style cut I wanted. When I showed her the end-result (streaky choppy highlights against dark hair streaks - "redneck" - excuse me, I don't mean to offend) I did not want, she said "oh honey no. we won't do that." so we seemed to be on the same exact page. We also chose a nice deep brown (about my same hair color, but richer) base color as an all-over color because she said it would make my ahir look richer and would look really nice with the highlights. I specifically asked "so the light highlights will still blend okay with such a dark all-over color and give me that blended natural look?" and she said "yes" and walked away to mix the highlighting color. so at 10:30 (my appointment was for 10am-1/1:30pm per my booking phone call and per our conversation when we started - my husband was waiting to get to work once I got home) she started with the highlight foils. As we approached 1pm, she was still not finished with but about 1/2 of my head of highlights, and had one of her girls help hand her foils - at this point the pieces that she started with had now had the mix on them for 2+hrs. I asked her if she thought we wouuld still be done at 1:30 and she said yes. 1:15 starts approaching and she was still working on the highlight color. My groupon was for a highlight, cut, wash, blow-dry and style and that was nowhere in sight. as we near 1:30 she has finally finished a rather harsh (pulling my hair and flipping foils all over the place,, scrubbing the brush against my head to apply my all-over color) application of the all-over color. so she sets the timer for the necesssary time (mind you, original hair that started the highlight process has now been under the dye since 10:30am...3hrs) and I ask her "is there any way I am going to be finished by 2? We still have a cut to do and my husband is really upset and needs to get to work - we were supposed to be done at 1:30, and even that was 30 min later than I booked for". She says "oh yes" and we go back to wash my hair out. She first applies a toner, and then washes and conditions and I tell her "look. it's already 2pm. If we need to, perhaps we should reschedule the cut portion of my appointment?" and she says perhaps. I tell my husband the pplan and he says he can't get to work and do anything at this point anyways, so just take care of it all...so I tell her "ok cool let's do eveything anyways" and she says "it's best if we reschedule the rest". Ridiculous thtat I even had to offer that to begin with. So I get to the seat and tell her I have to get home, just scrunch my hair and let it be curly and I will head home. So do. She wouldn't turn the chair around from the time I got my hair washed until she put the product in. Usually that feels like a "great reveal, taadaa!" but I just felt this suspicious, dropping feeling in my stomach. She finally turns me around and my first thought is "OMG. I look like a witch". i didn't say this to her because I didn't want to be a jerk, and there was nothign to be done at that moment anyways and I needed to GO. So I look up close and I had dye on my forehead at my hairline and "sideburn" area, and the highlighted parts of my hair were fried, and stringy and reminded me of the woman from frankenstein movies. I said "yep, I love it, let's gett checked out so i can go" just to save time, and I headed out. I got home and got in the shower - washed my hair and dried it and realized afterr straightening it, that the highlight color didn't even reach my scalp so it looked like i already had roots, and the highlight didn't even come all the way down to the ends of my hair DON'T GO HERE. I'm so glad she didn't cut my hair. She reimbursed me the goupon fare & color charge which was nice and also necessary, but now I still have to go get it fixed & my hair is fried. Badly. This was my second time coming here and Rita has done a great job! I'm trying to let my hair grow out so I can donate it in a few months-- she livened it up without taking too much length and spent so much time perfecting my cut and treating the natural dryness of my hair. They also honor Groupon for two visits ($16 for a hair cut, twice!) such a great deal! Definitely recommend! Takes a bit longer than I'm used to (a little more than an hour, but my hair is hella thick), but definitely with it! read more

I got a Groupon for a haircut valued up to $40 (which would have meant Rita, since that's her rate) but Rita had a backache and had to go to the doctor. I got a haircut with Kaylyn instead, and I was happy with the cut, even though I was not happy that I didn't have the stylist I asked for. Bought 2 Groupons, 1 for my niece and 1 for my baby's nana for cut and blowers. We get to place (with an appointment) and they tell us that they can't cut my niece hair cause she is under 12 (she is 10), and that I can't wait inside with my baby or my niece while the nana gets her hair done. Even though the lady seems to be apologetic for the inconvenience, we were not refunded the Groupon for not getting the service! In all my years going to salons (since I was a kid) , have I heard from a salon not allowing children inside or to provide a service to them due to liability reasons (maybe there is more to this). What a pleasant experience I had at Red Salon today. Like the other reviewers I also purchased a Groupon---being a new girl in town, not to mention to NC, I have to admit I've purchased several Hair Salon G's hoping to find the right fit and low and behold I think just stumbled on it right from the start at Red. The salon is pretty new, simply decorated, very well lit and in a happening little spot. I really liked that there was zero presence of hair salon snobbery or pretenciousness found elsewhere. Rita, the owner, is a natural and has the quiet confidence of someone who knows her craft well and has the experience to back it up. She spent a fair amount of time just looking at my hair both inside and outside in natural light. I felt she really and truly listened to what I was looking for (fix an over highlighted Groupon gone bad) and talk about the cut that would work best with my hairs texture. Rita was ever attentive and aware, cutting initially wet and then dry. I can honestly say I love my hair again. It's a nice dark chocolate with ribbons of caramel---delicious and oh so pretty in the natural light which Rita was sure to take me outside with a mirror to check out. I practically fell asleep while she was blowing out my hair because the environment was so chill and relaxing. Oh and FINALLY I did not leave a salon with the dark marked halo of dye along my hairline---the walk of shame--showing off I had my greys and roots done! Eureka! I went to Red Salon yesterday with a groupon for highlights, cut and style. I am extremely happy with the services I received. The owner Rita did my hair and took a lot of time before starting to make sure she understood what exactly I wanted do-much more in depth than a normal consultation. She painstakingly weaved out sections to be highlighted and was quick as a whip at doing foils (still took about 21/2 hrs to get my hair colored before the cut). I tend not to talk while i'm getting my hair done and she did not force any small talk that all too often stylists feel they have to do. By the time she was cutting and styling we were having easy conversation and nothing felt forced or pressured. Her technique is impeccable and her prices are extremely reasonable. Not only does this salon offer an incredible deal on groupon but Rita is very personable and friendly! The only thing I would say is that when I called to make my last appointment, I specifically asked for Rita. When I walked into the salon for my appointment, I was greeted by a new stylist named kaylin... she told me she would be doing my hair. I'm almost SHOCKED at a few of these bad reviews. I was referred by a friend to check out the salon and they just happened to be offering a great deal on Groupon. Rita got me in after hours (6pm, so it was GREAT I didn't have to take time from work). She sat down with me, looked at the color I had and agreed we needed to brighten it up. She was VERY knowledgable and up to date on current style, very friendly and professional. She's been doing hair for 30+ years and actually TAUGHT cosmetology. She definitely knows what she is doing. I had never heard of this place before and came across it on Groupon (which is actually what reminded me I needed to get a haircut soon). My regular stylist recently left so now I'm having to find another stylist. I decided to check this place out since I was getting a simple cut, no crazy cutting or coloring involved. I walked in and was immediately greeted by Kaylyn. We sat down and talked about my hair: it's characteristics, flaws, and what I was wanting in my cut for my hair. Kaylyn was very polite! I even described cuts I've been happy with before but wanted her to take her own approach as I've noticed when you allow stylists to use their own methods, my hair turns out really great! I'm glad she was honest about the cut she prefers because it turned out very cute! I have super thin hair so I hate when I leave a salon and it looks fabulous but I can never re-create it at own. This cut is very manageable, as I requested, while giving me a touch of volume which is feasible to do at home! If you're not completely sure, check out their group ok options so you can save a little money too! I'm not sure about the other stylists but I definitely recommend Kaylyn! I have very fine, straight hair and I typically ask for a few inches off and long layers to add volume. I've seen the worst of the worst when it comes to layers and since moving here in July of 2016 I've been so hesitant to go to salons. However, Kaylyn gave me the best haircut I've gotten since moving to the area! I've tried salon after salon (4 haircuts in total) and have been disappointed each time. Either the quality was terrible or the prices were outrageous. Not at Red Salon! Kaylyn sat me down and asked me what I wanted, asking questions during my description to ensure she understood what I was looking for. Throughout the cut she would double check with me to make sure I was happy. Her attentiveness was so reassuring, especially after having visited salons where they'd ask me what I wanted then end up doing what they want. Kaylyn was also fun to chat with and made the experience more enjoyable. The prices at Red Salon are also very reasonable. $30 for wash, cut, and style!
