I'm glad she works well for others, but definitely did not work for me. I had an important upcoming event and asked her to trim my shoulder-length bob. I told her my hair wings when layered and to leave it long. She promptly chopped off a large top piece and proceeded to layer my entire head. The longest section was only ~3 inches long. She then tried to form ringlets and left it to air dry. It was simply awful. Trying to keep an open mind (and having no other option), I thought I might get used to it. I left the salon. I called her two days later and left a message that I was having trouble making my winging hair look halfway decent, and wondered if she could squeeze me in for a quick fix prior to my event. I was desperate. She never even called back. Very disappointing. I went to my event with a bird's nest hairdo that several people told me wasn't my best look... It was humiliating. Being new to the area (ok, really, who isn't?), I needed to find all new services. I'm pretty picky when it comes to my hair so that was one of the first things I started researching. It didn't take long before I found Curl Up and Dye. The reviews sounded great (aside from the one scheduling snafu), so I made my appointment. If you're a new client, you won't be able to get in the same week. Kim is a one-woman show and is busy... because she's so good! So I scheduled my appointment for a few weeks out. I initially left her a message and she called me back when she was in between clients. Her place was easy to find, with its own little parking lot which made it convenient to zip in and out. Kim was friendly and listened to what I was looking for, and made suggestions based on my hair type. It was great. She was extremely efficient and my hair came out amazing. Now, I even send my husband there to get his hair cut. She is reasonably priced and sells Aveda products in her salon. I would definitely recommend Kim to anyone looking for a salon in the area... she's worth the wait! read more

I have found my salon. Kim comes from Chicago and brings a funky sense of style with a great set of skills honed in chi-chi Aveda salons. I've been going to Kim for years. The salon is always immaculate, the conversation witty and my hair always ends up flawless. Kim knows her stuff. She's a busy lady, so give yourself ample time for scheduling (ie: don't try to make an appointment the day before you need your hair done) and you won't be disappointed. Seriously. Go to Kim. The other Yelp reviews are not exaggerating. She is absolutely, without a doubt, the best stylist I have ever been to. Period. I know guys' cuts aren't all that hard, but still. I have never been more satisfied with how my hair looks more than I have the (numerous) times she's cut it. She's a blast to talk to, and she does this awesome head massage thing before she starts. Her prices are more than fair, especially considering what you get. I also feel completely comfortable going in and just asking her to do whatever she thinks would look good on me. Do yourself a favor and go here. I have never gone to a salon aside from the el-cheapo Hair Cuttery before but decided to treat myself with my first paycheck and thanks to Yelp, found this place. Wow. Such cute and unique decor, and chairs/sinks in different rooms of a converted house. You truly feel you are getting a personal experience. I had Teri, and she is so fun and friendly I had such a great time having her cut my hair while I watched my private tv and laughed about the show I was watching. Not to mention the scalp and neck massage and even a blow dry and style was included in my $50 charge! Being from South Florida, I expected a $100 tab! I accidentally dyed my blonde hair black about a month ago while attempting to go to a chocolate brown with a box dye. I went to another hair salon (whose name I won't mention) to get the color stripped out, and they did a terrible job. My hair was left splotchy and lifeless. After reading the reviews on Yelp about how great this salon is, I decided to call and set up an appointment. All I wanted was to be blonde again. Teri was my stylist, and my hair nightmare didn't even phase her. She advised that it would probably take a few sessions to get my hair blonde again, and that there wasn't any guarantee that it would turn out exactly how I wanted it, since it was so unevenly colored to begin with. I am normally a very quiet and shy person, and Teri's bubbly personality made me come out of my shell a little and surpass the typical awkward hair salon small-talk. Holy crap, my hair turned out perfectly. I'm exactly the shade of blonde I wanted to be, and I paid half the price that I paid at the unnamed hair salon that attempted to strip the black out of my hair. I'm truly impressed by the level of professionalism and expertise that this salon offers, as well as the unbeatable prices. Wow. Please do yourself a favor and go see Teri. read more

Like many of the others below, I have had a terrible time with scheduling appointments with them. This was not the first, but certainly will be the last time that they double booked my appointment slot and I wasn't able to be seen. Kim made absolutely no attempt to re-schedule with me (unless I wanted to wait 3+ weeks) or fit me in despite the mistake being on their end. Decent price, okay quality cut, not worth the hassle. EDIT: I had called and left a message after being turned away by Kim to confirm I had showed up for the correct appointment time and to see if she could fit me in later. More than a week went by before I got a call from Kim, NOT to apologize or follow-up to my earlier call or to reschedule, but instead because she was upset with the review. OUTSTANDING! Obviously I made the initial appointment because the name is completely f-ing clever- how could I not? But also, the Triangle hasn't exactly blown me away with amazing hair stylist experiences since I arrived last year, so I was still in the market for a good stylist- the search is over. The salon itself is beyond cute. Each station is its own uniquely decorated little room, so you feel as if you are in your own private little salon- it couldn't be more relaxing. Along with my color and cut I received a great conversation, neck and hand massage and a cup of delicious Aveda tea to sip, all the while soaking in the Aveda-scented air and doing a great job of forgetting that I should have been at work. I would give this place a rating even lower than this, if it was possible. I called the place 3 times to make an appointment and never heard back. Finally after various tries i get a call back to make an appointment and since i was in a meeting i end up giving a wrong time. So then i am back trying to call them to reschedule or cancel. I don't hear anything. I finally end up going to the salon to reschedule and make sure the appointment is canceled. So she had canceled my appointment and never bothered to call me back to let me know. Anyway, i have made another appointment. I show up the day of my appointment and apparently she says it was a day earlier. Even though i had setup a reminder on my phone and landed up there for a reason. I checked with my friend to make sure i hadn't messed it up and even she said that it was the day i landed up. To make matters worse, she refuses to reschedule without me paying a $75 fine for not showing up, when i wasn't the one who messed up the appointment anyway. I ended up waiting for a hair cut for 3 weeks for nothing! Needless to say, i think she is very rude and unprofessional and lost another customer. I don't think i will ever be going back or recommending this place to anyone in the future again! read more

I have long, thick curly hair and I needed a change! I have always been leary of those who say they know how to deal with curly hair. My past experience is I look like I have a pom-pom on my head afterwards because they don't listen and they don't really get it. Well, Kim was amazing! I am in love with my new hair (I cut off a good 6 inches and a heck of a lot more hair with the way she thinned it out) and I will keep going back to her. Her place is very charming, you get a personalized room and Kim has a great personality. The scalp massage is relaxing, and she takes the time afterwards to show you techniques. I have never had a problem making an appointment with her, and she always keeps our appointments. I moved to the Triangle about 5 years ago, and bounced around trying to find the perfect salon. Trust me when I say, Kim is it. She knows exactly what to do with your hair (we've gone from brown to blonde to brown again) and she will always listen to you before cutting. I came to the Triangle a bit more than half a year ago and was looking for a new hairdresser. I believed all these reviews posted in here and did not get disappointed. I would give five stars if appointments were not so hard to get :-) but I guess this can also count as a compliment in a way. Kim is great. She knows her stuff and she is really nice. I was very happy with my experience here. I had to wait a few weeks for an appointment, but ultimately I think that says a lot about a place. The shop itself is unique and eclectic, but very down to earth at the same time. Salons can be intimidating and impersonal sometimes (at least for me), but that certainly wasn't the case here. I felt comfortable and welcome the minute I walked through the door. Most importantly, I got a great haircut here, and in the end, that's what it's all about. I and my twin girls, 11 years old, went to Kim to see if 1) she could fit us in at one time; 2) color/highlight our hair to our individual taste (w/restrictions for the girls of course); and 3) give me a reasonable price. Well, she exceeded ALL of my/our requirements to the utmost! Her salon is the coolest; my twin tweens enjoyed it and were relaxed which relaxed me and we enjoyed everything! Kim is so knowledgeabe about her craft. Our hair came out perfect -she was honest in what colors would look best. Looks are mightly important to 6th graders! The girls received so many compliments at school! My hair turned out better than I had expected, she cut and colored to perfection! I've been to this place a couple of times in the past with good results. However, recently, it's been ridiculous to get in touch to schedule an appointment and if you're not a regular, you're pretty much screwed. I used to go on Saturdays but now evenings during the week and Saturdays are off limits to only those that pre-book. I'm sorry, but I have a job that I am unable to take off during the weekday to go get my hair done. Time off is only reserved for necessary events surrounding my three children under 3. Her customer service skills suck and while she does a great job on hair, there are 10 more in the area that will do a great job, if not better. read more

I had a great experience at the salon today! I was suffering from past botched dye jobs fron another salon. Kim not only fixed the color, she gave me a great cut and showed me how to style it in its natural wavy state. I have always had past problems with certain products salons use ie biolage, rusk, ......having too much perfumes or too many sufates and my allergies. The Aveda products there are great, I havent had to scratch or take an antihistamine. I would reccomend this salon to anybody who asked. Kim was awesome! I agree with some of the other comments about Curl Up and Dye. I repeatedly called and called over 2 weeks with no returned phone calls. I even go by the salon a couple of times during the week and notice the "open" sign on and tried to call again. Always reach the answering machine and leave another message and still have not received a phone call back. I am happy for those that have had wonderful experiences with this salon, you can defiantly tell that Curl Up and Dye does not need any NEW customers. I recently moved from Chapel Hill to Raleigh and havent had much luck finding a new salon. There was a Curl Up and Dye in Chapel HIll and was one to the best salons in the area. Shame this one is not as good as that one. read more
