I've never really encountered good Chinese food in Worcester--it's all either greasy takeout or over-priced and mediocre. I was so pleasantly surprised by Red Pepper! My boyfriend and I went there and ordered a large hot and sour soup and two separate entres. I got the fried tofu with dried chiles, and he got the shredded pork with pickled peppers. Both dishes were super spicy, which was awesome because we both like spice! There was more to the menu than at typical Chinese restaurants--there were a lot of interesting options. Also, the food is very reasonably priced. The hot and sour soup we ordered was four dollars for a massive bowl, and our entres were only 12 or 13 apiece. The service was really good--the server was attentive and polite. The manager/owner came up and checked in on us, and he was crazy friendly. They definitely care about providing good service to their customers. They could definitely stand to work on the ambiance of the place. It is pretty stark inside, with super white walls and minimal decor; however, it was very clean and put together. Just ordered a big take out order however we were severely disappointed. One of the items I ordered was two large orders of dumplings in chicken broth, something I have had I have had before while dining in and it was delicious. However tonight it was absolutely disgusting. It tasted like we were eating dumplings in vegetable oil, I tried everything to make it taste ok but nothing worked. Our server was very friendly, and helpful in regards to trying to describe tofu to my father. We ended up ordering the veggie delight and an order of vegetable lo mien. Bother dishes were very plentiful and tasty. The food came out very quickly (maybe even suspiciously quickly?) and it was pretty standard and not piping hot but it was overall fine. The atmosphere is clean and bright, slightly sparse, but pleasant nonetheless. The staff were exceptionally friendly and chatty and it made our experience there really stand out- I think this is what bumped it up from 3 to 4 stars for us. We had been going to Red Pepper on a regular basis but hadn't been for a couple of years. I wanted some real Chinese food instead of our American version if Chinese food. My wife likes the American version of Chinese and ordered her usual fare of Chix wings/fingers/boneless ribs. I ordered the Mongolian beef , hot and sour soup and spring rolls. In summary they all were horrible. Not sure if the virus took out the head chef but everything was bad. The worst was the boneless spare ribs which they mixed in some type of red sauce instead of the traditional dry grilled ribs. The place was empty on a Saturday night. Not sure if it was the virus or people started realizing this place has gone way down hill. Maybe it was a bad night but I'm not going back for a while (or ever). We shared some Sliced Fish and Tofu with Spicy Sichuan Pepper- a classic Sichuan dish that is well-executed here. We also ordered some Mapo Tofu, Dan Dan Noodles, Chicken with Pickled Pepper, and the Stir-Fried Sponge Gourd- a Chinese zucchini-like vegetable. While I can recommend all these dishes, the noodles and the chicken were fantastic and definitely worth a try. The food was overall well-seasoned and came in big portions. As for ambience, the restaurant is a bit stripped down, but passes well for a casual place to eat with a family. (If you're looking for the full bells and whistles, I'd check out Sichuan Garden in Woburn). The service was friendly, but it was a tad too slow, especially since the restaurant was largely empty that night. Our server also forgot to serve us water. On a second try, I think I like the Dan Dan noodles more. I've definitely had worse versions and they are certainly spicy. This time we got bean noodles with minced pork and chicken in spicy sauce. My girlfriend and I like to eat there once a week before. The food is good (a little bit salty) and authentic because I grew up in Sichuan and know exactly what good spicy food should be like in my hometown. However, the service is horrible! One young male waiter (without glasses) is super rude no matter if he speaks in Chinese or English (my girlfriend is not from China so he talks to us sometimes in English). He kept staring at my girlfriend almost every time when we went there and it made her feel uncomfortable. Today we went there just wanted to eat some Chinese food and relax. But this waiter he first told us that we could only sit in a super narrow space and I asked him "could we switch to another table in the other area" but he said "no" and explained to me that it's because they were preparing dumplings there. What? You guys prepare dumplings on customer's tables and don't let people sit there? We went to the other area without listening to him but found that there was only one female staff working there (preparing dumplings)and some people were eating at one of other tables. Then he directly threw the menus to the table we sit and told us "Order" in Chinese. I was super angry and went directly to the manager and told her about what this waiter did to us. I have gone to many good restaurants both in China and America and nobody treated us like this. We'll never go there again and I give them one star because there is no option for zero! read more

Where do I begin? It's safe to say that this is absolutely the best and most authentic Chinese restaurant in central MA. I may even dare to say that it is my favorite​ restaurant in Worcester - and I'm a serious foodie! Start with the Spicy Dan Dan​ noodles and move on to braised pork and tofu with a bowl of rice. If they have it - ask for crispy stem lettuce (like disks of jade as crispy as water chestnuts, or sponge gourd - soft and mild, bright green and fresh with a unique earthy and clean flavor to mellow out the spice in other dishes. Honestly - I've only eaten food this good in Kunming or in Shangrila City in Yunnan. Really, it's that authentic and delicious. We have friends from Cambridge who beg us to go out here everytime we are in Worcester together. My fav may just be the soups though, great for take-out on cold winter nights - pickled veg and pork with wheat noodles for a cold winter night is a go-to but I imagine that they are all good. Just keep this in your mind - this is NOT an American-style Chinese restaurant. Don't expect super-sweet sauces that all taste the same, no Kung​Pau​ or fortune cookies, no chicken fingers, crab rangoons, sweet and sour, etc. You've got lots of places in Worcester to got for great food like that. This is just a different restaurant for the area​ and a welcome change. As an authentic Szechuan​ restaurant - it's of the highest quality. Just as if you flew to western China and went out to the finest restaurant in town. So go with an open mind and try something new - go hungry, too!. I spent a month in Yunnan this year on the Szechuan​ border and every dish we had there was exactly the same as here. But this should come as no surprise - the Chinese have mastered food prep to a science, and it shows here - a place where every sauce and dish tastes amazing and different. I would advise one on their first visit to Red Pepper to ask what is on the specials board first (as it is written in Chinese), and trust the wait staff to suggest something. Absolutely everything we've had here has been unique and so flavorful. Newbies to this cuisine have all loved it, which surprised me as I am sure some of our guests were expecting pupu platters! I suggest ordering as the Chinese do - balancing a few fresh veggies like pea shoots or stem lettuce (celtuce) with something spicy like the tofu and braised pork. Sliced beef with green chili's or pickled peppers is also a fav. Lotus root for crunch and ​dine like you are visiting China. White rice bowls on the side, to eat out of. That's traditional. This is a sharing cuisine. There's a reason why most of the clientele here seem​ to be Asian students and large families - the prices are great too. This place is not your average chinese food. It is authentic Sichuan food. We have been here multiple times to eat in and take out. We used to live in Flushing, NY which is loaded with authentic chinese food from various regions. Dan dan noodles, spicy wontons, sautéed snow pea leaves, lamb with cumin are all excellent. Tried many items beef in clay pot, smoked pork belly, noodle soups and the lost goes on. Be sure to walk to the whiteboard by the front door that has the specials listed. We had a group of 5 people and everyone ordered their dishes like Dry chicken with Chilies and Dried tofu with some Singapore curry noodles which were super tasty. Don't ask for a tip you don't deserve. Long story short, the food tastes good, but I'm not going back because of the service. Went there for lunch and ordered 3 dishes. The manager served the first two dishes, and the waiter served us the last one - in an unusual way. He handled the dish over the short partition wall, so we had to took the dish and put it on our table. There weren't too many customers in the dining room - being too busy wasn't the excuse. I was a little bit upset cause it's only a few steps from the wall to the side of our table and the waiter was kinda lazy. But the dishes were served incredibly quickly (5 minutes or less) and tasted good, so I didn't say anything. We told the waiter we wanna checkout after we were done, so he handed us our bill. The bill asked for $40+/- and we have a $50 bill. The waiter took it and asked us if we need the change? I was thinking "kid, that's 25% tip you are asking", my boyfriend just responded, "Hand me the change, I will tip you." My boyfriend left $5 tip when we left and took the copy of the bill (customer copy, I guess). The waiter came and asked us where is the copy, it took a while for my BF to find the crumpled piece of paper, but he finally found it and gave it to the waiter. The waiter muttered "15%" under his breath. Me and my BF, we both stopped and checked with him if everything's Okay. The waiter said he just want the piece of paper and we were all set. After we walked through the glass door, we glanced back at the waiter, saw him complaining with the manager. So we went back asking what's the problem. The waiter said we should give a 15% tip cause that's what suggested on the bill. I clarified with them that we're not tipping on the tax, and the manager told us we are good to go. After we left the restaurant, we just got even angrier. Cause the problem was not about tipping on the tax, it's about tipping on the service we got. And the waiter's service obviously didn't deserve a 15% tip: - He gave us a water bottle when we sit and we filled our own teacups. - My BF's teacup had stains on it. - He didn't even put our dish on our table, which is the first time for me. - He asked us if we want to have the change. We understand he wants more tip, but please don't be so pushy. We just want to relax when we have lunch. - No smile, from the moment we walked in, until the moment we finally left. - Just saying we should tipping at 15% instead of asking if there's any problem with the service. I was trying to get to their Framingham location for years and then moved away. Back to visit and managed to go here with old friends. Really authentic Chinese food (also according to my Chinese friends who were with us, one from the region of the dishes.) Great spice, but still excellent flavor. Pork belly, cumin lamb, mushroom hot-pot, eggplant - all with their own unique flavors. Friendly and very attentive staff; they should get a liquor license though, some heavy alcohol would have helped with the digestive process :) If I lived close, I would be a regular. read more

its sad I;m giving this restaurant a 2 and its because we ordered the spareribs in sweet and sour sauce the waitress never came back to our table until we were done and I told her we could not eat these they were not tender they were very tough!! 4 people in our party couldn't eat them she just said sorry. so it left a bad taste in our mouth. also they don't have any diet drinks at all so the diabetic we where with had to have water or the tea. but the hot pots we had where terrific and the dan dan noodles excellent read more

Still my favorite Chinese in the city but after many many visits I have to say the quality has trended down hill over the past year. For example the green beans with beef was exceptional the first time I had it; crisp beans fried hard in the wok but not overcooked dressed with a nice sauce. We live around the corner, so it's our goto chinese place. Unfortunately, it's not that good. Food is dry, bland and tasteless. We order every once in a while, hoping it gets better but it has not.
