The lunch special price is good. The food has some authentic elements but it is a little too greasy and salty for me. These two dishes are tasty but over-seasoned: eggplant with spicy Szechuan sauce; pork and sliced tofu. The wonton soup is terrible. The skin on the wonton is super thick and the broth tastes like it came straight from a can. Fried rice is also terrible. Cooked the way Americans like it, I suppose. At least the parking is plenty! We went here with some friends who are from China and they wanted authentic Chinese food. The restaurant is pretty spacious with white walls and dark furniture. When we got to the table, there was a pot of Chinese tea waiting for us. But we had to wait 20 minutes for someone to take our order. In fact one of our friends had to flag him down. Our waiter was not friendly. He did not apologize for making us wait. He took our order and took off. Our drinks arrived in a good amount of time, but again the waiter was not friendly. While we waited we watched Chinese TV on a large screen TV. The food was excellent. It came out hot and fresh. We ordered several dishes and ate family style. We Ordered the spicy beef, beef and broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, eggplant, chicken wings, dumpling soups, ribs and sweet rice dumplings. I recommend all the dishes but the spicy beef because I didn't eat it. My friend did and loved it. If you want authentic, delicious Chinese Food, I recommend this restaurant. A Worcester chef referred my mom and I to Red Pepper last fall. He shared, Red Pepper was his go-to spot for amazing Chinese. We stopped in for a Chinese New Year lunch. The setting is rather basic, bordering drab. The staff, whilst courteous enough, provided the absolute basic in way of service. I needed to ask for everything; water, utensils, check. No one checked on us at all once food was served. Again, everyone was courteous but the vibe was off. The patrons were a largely Asian population which usually is a good sign as I have experienced at Dim Sum in Chinatown. There was a Chinese New Year Show on a big screen TV. It was slightly amusing. Back to the food; we were overwhelmed with the menu so waited about 15 minutes to grab the attention of someone. Our waitress guided us every so slightly on choices. I would have loved a little more explanation as there were some really unusual authentic options. We settled on meatless Dan Dan Noodles, a fish and tofu dish, spicy chicken and shrimp spring rolls. Food came hot and fast. We liked the Dan Dan Noodles but they were swimming in chili oil. The chicken, much the same. The fish and tofu dish had the same orange greasy oil and both proteins were soggy, lacking flavor. Mom loved her spring rolls. The bill was 37.00 before tip. Plastic ware isn't individually wrapped, just all in a basket pulled out by hand by the cashier. I ordered a duck dish with Konjac noodles. Perfect Sichuan spicy foods for the winter time! Red pepper offers different spicy levels for each dish with option to make it less or more spicy. I split a spicy fried chicken dish, pork intestines, aged chicken soup and lettuce dish with some friends. Highly recommend the spicy chicken dish! It's a mix of dried red peppers and small pieces of spicy and salty chicken. Big portion and great for sharing! The spicy pork intestines were slightly on the oily side, but the intestines are pretty fatty and oily themselves. It has green peppers and mushrooms mixed in. Beware of the green peppers! Some have seeds inside that can definitely bring the heat! The all came out super quick and tea was on the table when we arrived. Definitely need to be a little more aggressive when asking for a check or refill but definitely coming back again :) (especially in the wintertime!) read more

Went here last night with 3 other people and YUM! Very good food here! We each got our own entree as well as split an app all for about $54. Not bad! Here's what we ordered: -app: pork/veggie dumplings (6). Very good! -orange chicken (with rice): very delicious! Flavorful for sure! -sesame chicken (with rice): salty, but not too bad. I placed an order online and was quoted a price. Upon arrival for pickup at the restaurant I was told they would not sell me lunch menu items even though the order was placed before 4pm and no time parameters were mentioned anywhere on the website. So I had to pay more for the same items AND wait for them to be cooked. And to top it all off the food was completely flavorless. I've had better Chinese food from mall food courts. We have been regulars here for a while now, because we are always met with good service and good food. Well, mostly just for the good food. The crunch cumin fish they have is definitely one of our favorites, and is an absolute must have. Really, you can't miss it! We also love the spicy eggplant which I would recommend to anyone. We also frequently order the pea shoots and bok choy, as they are healthy and refreshing additions to our meal. The good: I would strongly recommend the Dan Dan noodles with chili oil and minced pork... its only $6 dollars and definitely a bang for your buck. The Sichuan fish fish with tofu is also good if you're into spicy. My dishes totaled in the 20s and I still had leftovers for the next day. My girlfriend and I have been passing this place for weeks. They were closed because they hadn't opened for business yet. So when we finally saw that they were open we had to go. I started with the egg drop soup which was pretty good, and then got the General Tso's Chicken. The chicken was really good. Good flavor, although it could be a bit more spicy. The chicken itself was good. Not fatty, breaded well. My girlfriend got the Wonton Soup, which she enjoyed. For her entree she got the Shrimp with Walnuts and Mayonnaise Sauce. She was excited when age saw it on the menu because she has been craving it and there's not many places in Worcester that serve it. She liked it a lot. The service was great. Only reason I'm not giving this place a 5 star is cause I've only been here once. But GOD DAM this place was great. If you want the gritty authentic chinese food then this is your place. Szechuan cooking, so you know its going to have oil and spices. Dan Dan noodles are the best I've tried so far. Went to another place that had it and it did not taste right, but this place makes it good. Also had the shredded pork with bamboo, was lightly seasoned but i think the point was to emphasize the taste of the bamboo. The cumin beef was solid, the beef was very soft. And the tofu almost had the same seasoning has the Dan Dan noodles which was great. Overall this place is underrated. Pricing is fair, $10 per dish basically. Don't be put off by the drab exterior- this place is a gem. Fresh, beautifully prepared vegetable dishes and nicely spiced chicken entrees. An extensive menus with regional favorites. I sampled everything on our table- soup, dumplings, noodles- all tasty. Very happy to have such quality Chinese food in Worcester. We've made it one of our regulars. Having Americanized Chinese food constantly in Worcester, it gets very tiring to eat. Previously living in Boston I loved the many options I could get, especially dan dan noodles. It was very good here, even though I got a general tso chicken for a little kid I was with, I tried a piece and it has got to be the best one I've had in Worcester itself. My wife (who is Chinese) and I stopped at Red Pepper for lunch today. We were traveling from Maine to upstate NY and this place seemed like it would have good, authentic Chinese food. It does. I am baffled by negative reviews here. We ordered a lot of food and ate it in (which is always better than take out). The people were great, and the food was even better. From the scallion pancakes to the hot wontons to the dry fried chicken to dan dan noodles and a few other items (we had a lot to take with us too). Anyway, this is excellent Chinese food in a very nice venue and run by very nice people. If we didn't live so far we'd be going here regularly. read more

Like most American style Chinese restaurant, you can find a lot of 'strange' Chinese cuisines that we never had in China. However, we may still find some typical Sichuan food. MaLa hot pot is a big mix of fish, tripe, beef, doufu and some vegetables. It tastes as hot as we had in China, but it will be better if more spice added. I went today for lunch. I hadn't been in this restaurant since it had changed from being Chopsticks which unfortunately was years ago. I had looked it up on Yelp this morning to see what was written about it and I checked out the menu before making my decision to come here. Great decision. I started out with a hot and sour soup. Best one I have had in a while. I also ordered the Mongolian beef and the Sauteed Pork Kidney with garlic sauce. Both were absolutely amazing. I have had other types of offal, but had never had kidneys before. Delicious. All three items had the spiciness that I love. I would gave liked it if the two entrees came out at the same time, but it really didn't spoil the meal. The restaurant is very clean and the wait staff was quite nice. It should've been advertised as duck bones or bone shards with large slices of ginger. Every bite I took, I, literally, had bone in my mouth. I couldn't eat it. This place use to be my regular hang out place coz one of my friend loves it a lot, however I really can't put a thumb on it. The food is really salty, drinking a lot of water is inevitable. The shrimp is never fresh, I can taste the seafood smell every time, it's gross. The worst part is the decoration! Why would they ever put big TV screens everywhere? It's more than annoying. I just wanna either talk with my friends or have a quiet dinner while the TV screen and noise is distracting me all the time. The location is a bit isolated too. The building that Red Pepper is located in may be unassuming, but the food is anything but. Red Pepper serves real Sichuan food with it's spicy and complex flavors, not just the "Sichuan style" food that most places in the US serve. Despite the fact that the menu features standards such as General Tso's chicken and beef with broccoli, the real stars of the show are on the specials menu. The items on the specials menu really show the true depth of Sichuan cuisine, from the fiery hotpots to the wonderful deep fried tofu with dry chili peppers. Every single time I've ordered the food has been excellent and extremely tasty and I've yet to encounter a dud on that menu, even among the more adventurous dishes. Visit Red Pepper if you're tired of the same old Chinese takeout (they do take out too btw) and want to be treated to fresh, interesting and delicious food for a very reasonable price. read more

The food is very good with classic Sichuan dishes. I was really excited when they opened a location in Worcester so that I wouldn't have to travel all the way to Framingham. I hate that the food is so good because the service is HORRIBLE. I have been there multiple times, and the waiter is incredibly rude. He eavesdrops on our conversations and makes condescending remarks. He also has made blatantly racist comments about my interracial relationship. At first I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt by thinking he was having a bad day, but no, this behavior is consistent on repeat visits. We got take out from Red Pepper last Friday. I had heard good things about this place and read the many very positive reviews. We got the scallion pancakes- dry and without many scallions; lamb with onions and scallions- just OK and General Tsao's chicken which was nothing special. Since we did not eat in, cannot comment on the service and have to admit that under most circumstances take out is of a less quality than hot food served immediately from the stove so Red Pepper was probably at a disadvantage here. Since the location is quite far from us, we both felt that the food was definitely not special enough to make another trip. We have been looking for a new spot to replace our recently departed and loved Red Lantern which closed a month ago. We will need to continue to audition more Chinese places. Worcester definitely seems to lack a good, non Americanized Chinese place, especially one that served my favorite, Dim Sum. read more

OVERALL: Strong execution, great Chinese flavors. If you don't want to drive to Natick/Boston, this is the best Chinese around. FOOD: -Sichuan Cold Sesame Noodles: really tasty. Great chew on the noodles and the sauce is sour, savory, sweet, and numbing. The sauce doesn't really taste primarily of sesame but it's really well balanced and tasty. Recommended 7.5/10 -Pork and Bamboo Stirfry: very basic sounding dish but such good wok hei in the execution. The flavor is tremendous and the bamboo is fresh and tender. Goes fantastic with rice, highly recommend. 9/10 -Dry Pan Pork Intestines: sichuanese classic, done quite well here. The portion is a little smaller than other dishes but the flavor is quite good. Some pieces are less well rendered out than others so are a bit more on the fatty side. 8/10 -Stirfried Kidney: another sichuanese classic, also well done. Goes great with rice, definitely a bit on the saltier and greasier side. Nice and tender, not overcooked. Great wokhei again. 8/10 -White Poached Fish: not sure what I was expecting but fairly boring. That said, the fish tasted fresh and sweet, there just wasn't a whole lot of interesting flavor to it. This would be great for people who don't like spice or are on a diet. [7/10] Food value was quite decent too, the portions aren't skimpy. After wanting to try Red Pepper for some time now, we finally got the chance to try it last night and were pretty happy with our dining experience, although things could have been a bit better. Upon our arrival, we felt that segregation was in play here, quite blatantly, as we were led off to our table, past one dining room occupied by only Asian customers, and seated in the other which was occupied by persons of other persuasions. Both dining rooms had numerous vacant tables so we wondered why we weren't just seated in the one closest to our point of arrival (we entered through the back door/handicap entrance) or given a choice of where we wanted to sit, as is the case in many other Chinese establishments we have visited in the past. I felt that this was not a good sign and feared that we would not be treated in an equal manner. While she was pleasant enough while in our presence, our heavily-accented server was MIA most of the time, choosing rather to tend to customers in the Asian room (odd, as there seemed to be another Asian girl waiting tables there), or she disappeared completely for long periods of time to parts unknown. We wished to obtain knives for our table set ups and water, but got neither because of her absence. Our food was brought to our table in relatively quick order by her and a jovial male co-worker (I secretly wished he was assigned to our table). We started off with an order of eggrolls which were nicely hot, crisp and not at all greasy, but these were some of the most bland I've ever eaten. While they were served in an attractive manner, the two standard-sized rolls were filled with only shredded cabbage---we could not detect the presence of anything else. The accompanying sweet and sour sauce helped a little. Our Kung Pao Chicken was very good: tender meat with ample saucing, red chilies and peanuts. The General Tso Chicken sauce was a bit sweeter than we're used to, but otherwise good, the plate of extremely tender and crisp chicken chunks garnished with a few lightly-steamed broccoli crowns. Although the chicken dishes came with steamed white rice, we also ordered a plate of pork fried rice. Again, this dish was not at all greasy and was loaded with pieces of barbecued pork and vegetables, very enjoyable. We didn't wait long for our check which was brought by the jovial portly dude. He was the one to finally ask us if the food was satisfactory, to which we replied that is was. Our bill was a very reasonable $43.00, tax and tip included. Alas, Red Pepper is still B.Y.O.B. and we were told that they would not have a liquor license until near the end of the year. Too bad, because although we brought beer with us, we felt that a Scorpion Bowl could have alleviated some of the uneasiness we felt at times.
