Decided to give Red Envelope another shot after about two years, and takeout was definitely a much better experience this time around. The beef with lemongrass was super flavorful, saucy, and packed with lemongrass. The beef lo mein was solid too--really generous portion. The chicken larb was just okay for me since I'm used to the traditional Thai version, but you could still taste the lime and fish sauce coming through. Overall, glad I tried them again! read more

I stopped at Red Envelope to pick up a late lunch/early dinner. It is a cute restaurant and pretty small inside. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and my order was ready to go when I arrived. I ordered chicken pad Thai and thought it had good flavor. It had less color than I am used to for pad Thai, but the flavor was still there. I also felt the price was reasonable for the portion size. Overall, I had a pleasant experience. read more

My wife and I stopped in this evening. She had pad thai. I had drunken noodles. My wife commented that she hasn't had pad thai that good for years. She's actually been avoiding ordering it - and we have a decent Thai restaurant near our home in Southern Maine. My drunken noodles was excellent as well. Lots of touches that layered flavors. The cooks here definitely know what they're doing. Our server was Shae. She was fantastic. The restaurant was employ when we first arrived but filled up quickly. Shae was attentive to everyone and hustled without seeming crazed. On top of restaurant patrons there were a lot of phone orders which Shae also supported getting completed. I ordered take out via online ordering. Online ordering was easy and simple. When I went to pick up, the lady working front of house was very friendly and checked on my food. The space was a smaller space with a handful of tables but clean. I ordered a vermicelli with grilled pork and a Thai tea. My Thai tea was good, it tasted exactly as I expected. The grilled pork was tasty and had a good char/grill flavor. The noodles tasted a tad bit over, I prefer my noodles a little more al dente. The sauce tasted fine and the veggies were fine. I'm used to getting the mix of pickled carrot with daikon, I think this one had just the carrots. I would still try this again, or maybe their pho. read more

I have been eating pho for 35 years. I know this food. I arrived at 4 on a weekday and I ordered gyoza and pho . The gyoza was from a freezer bag. I saw it. When she brought the sides that usually are added to soup based on your taste. There were 6 basil leaves and a yellow lime. When the soup came out and I saw the color , I knew this was not pho stock . It was light in color , like chic broth. No depth, nothing , like nothing . 18 bucks. I didn't eat it and I paid and tipped but this is not pho .in Brunswick or Portland it's no more money than 15.00 and there are sprigs of basil andhomemade stock that cooks for days and brownish in color. I've been visiting Maine regularly all of my life; my mother and her mother were born here and several family members live in Maine. But I live in North County San Diego, where registered voters can get voting materials in Vietnamese and where there are more places that serve pho than serve lobster rolls. Recently the Red Envelope Vietnamese/Thai restaurant opened in the space that for decades was Mario's Pizza. I decided to try it tonight, and I'm glad I did. I was eating alone, so I couldn't try many dishes. I had Cha Gio (Vietnamese egg rolls) and Pho Dac Biet. Both were excellent. This food would be competitive in my home neighborhood near San Diego. The Cha Gio were perfect, but I think the sauce for them came out of a jar. It tasted fine. Pho is served in a big bowl that contains most of its ingredients, with a plate of garnishes on the side. One of those garnishes is always bean sprouts. I like to put the bean sprouts into the hot pho while it is still too hot to eat, so that they will cook a little. Then when it has cooled down some, I add the other garnishes. The first test of restaurant pho is whether it arrives hot enough to cook the bean sprouts. Mine did. I had to ask for chopsticks, but this is Maine, a frugal place that isn't going to waste money on chopsticks that people aren't going to use. I like to mix hoisin sauce and sriracha together to make a dip into which I dip pieces of meat before eating them. Having just asked for chopsticks, I was reluctant to ask for a side bowl in which I could mix the sauces, so I used the now-empty garnish plate. It worked. It is unusual for me to finish a meal of pho without slopping some on my shirt. Tonight I managed, and I feel proud. Tonight as I was finishing my dinner, a couple sat down at the next table and were discussing the menu. One said "I wonder if I want a small bowl or a large bowl". I held up my small bowl to show them, and said "this is a small bowl". They gasped and commented that it was huge. Pho bowls always are. read more

Never have I ever, had pineapple in tom tum soup, and I have to say I am not a fan. Soup was sickly sweet and I couldn't eat more than a couple bites (of course I got the gigantic size, what a waste). Wish it had said what was in it on the menu, there wasn't even any tomatoes or cilantro in sight and hardly any mushrooms, just huge pieces of carrot, onion, bell peppers, peas, and a whole lot of pineapple. The Red Envelope is a hidden gem in downtown Bath. Its understated decor doesn't reflect the outstanding quality of the food it serves. My wife and I recently enjoyed delicious Thai and Vietnamese cuisine there. We had a drink and appetizers while we waited for our take out dinner. The apps were outstanding as were the entrees. The waitress was a little less than knowledgeable about the offerings, but was quite pleasant. The major downside to the modestly appointed dining room is there were no bathrooms. The food was outstanding, but the dining room could use a remodel including a bathroom. read more

This amazing restaurant may be small and inconspicuous, but the food is the best! The flavors are incredible, and I've eaten much of the large menu. The prices are low, such as Thai tea for $5, which is usually $8 or so in this area. The marinaded chicken skewers are soooooo good, and the curry peanut sauce is so good, I literally eat it with a spoon! The green curry dish is so full of flavor and has just the perfect heat to it! They have an extensive menu, but of the 15 or so items I've tried, they are all exceptionally good. This is one of those places I can't wait to go back to, and without exception, I get some food from here every single time I drive into, or past, Bath! Highly recommend this place for vegans, since they actually know how to make vegan Vietnamese and Thai dishes. I got a bonus free hair in my drunken noodles that were ordered a #3 fire but totally flavorless, mushy stuck together, and not any extra sauce on the fried tofu that was ordered with it. the steamed dumplings very small in comparison to other local Asian food restaurant, again no flavor. the crab rangoons were so small, mostly all fried goon. all of this was def not worth $60 that tasted like frozen bland food minus any sauce. horrible experience. read more

It was good and I would get again, but not sure I would say great. My wife had a black bean dish which she said was cooked perfectly but a bit salty. Had a pot of tea as well. Red Envelope is a new restaurant in town and a new favorite. I have not had a pho this good for a long time. They boil the stock for the soup for over 24hrs, and it is fantastic. I have also tried the tofu sub, with a spicy/creamy sauce, and came back again because it was so good. One slightly less satisfying dish was the pad Thai, which we found too sweet. Delicious Vietnamese and Thai food. Easy access from Rte 1 and has parking for maybe 5 cars. We are still sampling the menu, but so far the standouts are Vietnamese Egg Rolls (similar to lort at Cambodian Restaurants), home made dumplings and the Pho. I usually don't like Pho too much, but this was delicious. I had the Pad Thai today and it was quite good, I'd say on the sweet side. The bahn mi are tasty but could have more filling. Hanoi shrimp and Massaman curry have also been very good. Easy on-line ordering for taking-out and a clean, well decorated restaurant for eating in. In the middle of downtown Bath, which is fun for a stroll. They have only been open a few months and are a good addition to a limited ethnic food scene in the mid-coast. read more
