The Red Barn is so charming! They do a great diner breakfast in an easy-going setting. I always like seeing their specials and will more often than not order one of them. Some days I want something healthier, other days I want a giant waffle covered in fruit and nuts. I'm glad that they can cater to both ends of the spectrum. Had a very nice outdoor breakfast here today with the family. Since we aren't ready yet to eat inside with two babies and are new to the area, we came across Red Barn and really just thought it was charming. Food was great, well priced, staff attentive and kind. Loved that the "usuals" seemed to know the staff by name and order--always love that. Definitely will be one of our places going forward. Our order: 1. Corned beef hash/eggs- very interesting taste on the corned beef hash--something sweet is in them (seasoning) which I wasn't sure I liked until three or four bites in. Then I devoured. 2. Mexican burrito- my husband nearly licked his plate. 3. Kiddies got pancakes and side of sausage/fruit- the pancakes were scrumptious, I may order next time because I ate so much of them this time. Definitely see the hype of this place. After living in Montville for five years I finally tried them out for lunch (I need to return for breakfast). Such a cozy welcoming place with fantastic staff. It's been 4 years since my review of The Red Barn and I decided to give it another go as it is our towns local eatery. Arrived at 11:40, place was busy but not out of control. Ordered at 11:51, food came at 12:27 and consisted of a meatloaf sandwich which was awful, a Taylor Ham , egg and cheese, sliders, and a wrap. 36 minutes and the server never bothered to follow up or check on us. I love their selections of diner like foods with a less complicated menu. They are not open for dinner. Their specials change daily and special orders are not a problem. Sometimes I really don't know if certain reviewers are eating at the same restaurant! I can best describe this place as a college cafeteria. The food is average or below par and is one step above frozen foods. I believe many people such as myself who live in Montville frequent this place because it is a habit or convenient. No one would really come here just for the food. Pancakes were spongy and eggs were runny and not cooked well. I used to own a restaurant and know all about food prep. Believe me, I really wanted this to be a great place to eat since it is so convenient but unfortunately it is very disappointing. I wanted to love this place so much. I love the hometown cozy feel. The waitress was terrific. The food was not good. Now I can't speak for the entire menu but for what we ordered nothing was good. We ordered off the specials menu. For Sunday morning breakfast. I got the eggs with hashbrowns and a it came with a side of biscuits and gravy. The hashbrowns are not good the eggs are OK but not great. The biscuits and gravy were horrendous. Not everybody knows how to make biscuits and gravy but if you don't know how to make them turn off of them. These were big chunks of not so good sausage and a yellowish gravy. My wife had the sausage onion and provolone omelette. A ridiculous amount of onions. Not good. It came with a side of pumpkin French toast. It sounded so great but was terrible. Ridiculously dense overly sweet but not in a good way at all. Like I said I really wanted to love this place because I love the decor and I loved the country feel. It seems like this place is really different depending on what time you go - I think on Saturdays they have a line out the door, whereas I came in on a weekday and was one of the only people! In my experience, they are really friendly, and the food is quite good, though the best part is the old-fashioned look of the restaurant. Everything is as you would expect with your typical breakfast faire but there's always new and unique specials and healthy 10-12 of them so it does not get repetitive. The place gets busy especially on holidays so service can be a tick slow, there is a need for improved air conditioning and the chairs wear on your bootie after a while. First time here for a late breakfast/early lunch with my BF, a resident of Montville for 25 years. He was craving their corned beef hash and slated it as the best ever. I have to admit the daily soup (butternut), and my club sandwich were tasty, and yes, the corned beef hash was pretty darn good. (That gives them at minimum 2 stars - great tasting food) But a quick bite in between errands turned into a bit of a drawn out, almost painful, over an hour affair for some eggs/ hash and a club sandwich. The service leaves boatloads to be desired. 1. I stood in front of the hostess for a few minutes before she even acknowledged my existence... at which point she now had 2 other people behind me also wondering if we should seat ourselves. 2. Waitress was in absolute Lala land. We could see her the whole time, staring into space, while we patiently waited, and waited, and waited for her to catch our eye so we could at least order. Soup came quick but then nothing. Need a coffee refill? Nope. A man actually came over to try to take our coffee cup, to which we said no we are waiting for more - do you think maybe he'd say "I will get that for you"? Nope. Had to flag down a different waitress, that was the only one actually moving, asked her to get our waitress for more coffee, and she said "oh I'll get that for you" - super cheerfully.... And I felt bad because she seemed to be the only one working. Then we waited and waited some more. As stated above when our food actually arrived it was great. Once we were done, our plates were quickly removed by the same gentleman, and again we waited. Finally my Bf was able to catch our waitresses eye and motion for the check, as we had now been at the restaurant for over an hour, we were starting to run late. Again we waited, and waited. Finally we abandoned trying to wait at the table and enlisted the help of the staff at the register to get our check. We left agreeing that what should have been a quick bite to eat turned into a pretty painful waste of our Saturday. read more

The current owners now have the place for ten years and have really made it their own. Still feels like home, the food is excellent and the service has risen to excellent as well. The few short comings I mentioned in the original review have been handled. I love that they get their bagels from a local bagel shop and not frozen from a distributor. The omelets are tasty and the mushroom and cheese omelet is made with fresh mushrooms. You can get real maple syrup for a reasonable price and their waffles and pancakes are very good. For lunch my sons love the burgers while my wife and I enjoy a veggie burger on a delicious roll. The muffins and pies are also great. This is the go to place in Montville-Towaco. read more

Red Barn is a cute, friendly, welcoming joint. My large family had a wonderful brunch here. The food was okay. The staff was wonderful. I have celiac disease - gluten allergy. There is nothing on their menu that caters to me, I ordered an omlette - without the toast. However, there is cross contamination and the staff here isn't very knowledgeable about food allergies. I got sick as soon as we left the restaurant. If you're looking to grab a quick bite for breakfast. Stop by. All the food is yummy and the portions are generous so bring your appetite. I split my french toast special, and I still had plenty of food to fill me up. The french toast is the perfect balance of moist, light, and fluffy. It was covered in strawberries, blueberries, and bananas. Delicious. I came here a bunch growing up, and everything was good...or at least that's how I remember it. Nothing has changed. The food is still on point and the service is friendly. I have gone to Red Barn once in my life and I do not plan on going ever again. I ordered an avocado hamburger and the entire meal was cold. The avocado was extremely old. The French Fries on the side were still frozen on the inside. Do not eat here. The inside looks like a museum and there is no atmosphere. read more
