Pastrami Reuben

I have lived in the neighborhood for nearly 15 years and always thought this place looked "interesting", but was always hesitant to try it. Very glad I finally did! I took my sister from out of town there for lunch, looking for something "interesting". It was already packed before noon on a Thursday, so that looked promising. A little noisy, maybe? , Greeted promptly, seated in the last booth left, great coffee. Service fast and friendly despite crowd. Reuben great. Lean Patrami. oversized portion (!) served open face. Tons of fries and did not expect bonus onion rings. Reasonable price. The pies looked great, but we were overstuffed from lunch serving. Will return.

The Red Barn seems to be an institution for Montville/Towaco so I have no idea how Wifey and I had never tried it. My daughter and her boyfriend have been here a lot and invited us out for brunch. With a fairly standard breakfast/brunch menu and an 'everything is great' response from my daughter, I went with kind of a standard for me - two eggs, crispy bacon, hash browns, and I HAD to try their biscuits and grits (IYKYK - very few North Jersey places serve grits). Wifey and daughter each got different breakfast paninis. My meal was great - the biscuits here are a little small, but tasty, and they held up when I built two small breakfast sandwiches. The grits weren't anything out of the ordinary if you like grits, but since I almost never get them here I was delighted! Paninis were great according to the ladies, but Wifey took half home since it was a pretty big portion. Our server was great - she told us when she seated us that they were short staffed and apologized ahead of time of the food was delayed. I appreciated the warning, but there was no need to- she was attentive, helpful, friendly and our food came out without delay. This place is cute, but tight. It also gets PACKED, so expect to wait a bit. I will be back!

Eggs Benedict

If I'm ever unsure what to order for breakfast, my go-to dishes are always eggs benedict or french toast. I was looking for something new while waiting for an appointment nearby and came across a place called Red Barn. I ordered online--there were so many great options! The pickup time said 20 minutes, but I arrived a little early and my dish was already being served when I checked in at the front register. When I stepped inside, the place immediately gave off a cozy, homey vibe. It has that classic diner charm, with an island counter for solo eaters and wooden tables for larger groups. My eggs benedict was delicious, but what really made my morning were the crispy hash brown sides. It's been years since I've had hash browns this good--thin, golden, and perfectly crunchy. I'll definitely be back with friends or family to sit down and enjoy a meal.

Red Barn is my favorite local spot to grab breakfast when I'm too lazy to cook at home. They are always packed on the weekends and there's typically a wait to get a table but they'll make every effort to get you seated quickly. I stopped in on Friday for breakfast and got to choose my table :) Red Barn has a rustic feel with wood panel walls and lots of cute wall decs throughout. It's a small restaurant but oh so worth it! I ordered the avocado eggs Benedict over corn bread from the specials menu. Having corn bread as the base for eggs Benedict sounds odd, but it was good! I'd say 9 times out of 10 I order from their Specials. They come up with the oddest sounded pairings at times but they're delicious. Make sure to ask for the Specials before just ordering from the menu. Service is fast and the ladies working here are all so friendly and personable! You'll leave here full and with a smile!

Monte Cristo w/ fries

We were looking for a diner along Rt. 287 and found Red Barn. Charming rustic decor, and an extensive menu of reasonably priced breakfast and lunch options. Good portions, and good, somewhat basic food. The Monte Cristo sandwich was very large and served with fries and a few onion rings. The Greek salad was nice, especially with the gyro and grape leaves, but I would have preferred a more flavorful dressing than the olive oil at the bottom of the bowl. The wood benches are not very comfortable, and I wasn't offered any coffee refills, so don't plan to linger too long. The service was prompt, though very businesslike (not warm and friendly). Maybe 4 stars for a breakfast place, but initial impression was 3.5 for lunch.

It's been a few years since we've stopped in but the experience is as great as it always was. The food is delicious and the service is friendly and fast. A great way for our little family to start the new year.

Western Omlet

The Red Barn Restaurant is a local favorite for both breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was craving a western omelet and I knew I had to come here. I placed my order over the phone and with a return time of 15 minutes. The staff immediately greeted me while they packaged my order. The establishment features a unique breakfast counter sitting area as well booths and tables. Everyone was seated around the counter laughing and having a good time while they enjoyed their coffee. My western omelet came with a side of white toast and home fries. I opted to get a side of sausage and sausage gravy. The omelet was cooked nicely with crispy home fires. The gravy hit the spot as I loved dipping my toast in it. Overall a great breakfast!

You can't go wrong with breakfast at Red Barn. I've both dined in and have ordered takeout and have yet to be disappointed. They have lots of options on their regular menu, and have a fair amount of specials to choose from as well. I'm a fan of their pancakes, bacon, hash browns and eggs benedict. Service is friendly, quick and attentive. Be prepared to wait on weekends, but it usually goes by quickly.

Got the Eggs Benedict. It was soooo good. Instead of the home fries, I opted for the hash browns. If you're a hash brown lover, then this is a MUST. The hash browns were a beautiful color and super crispy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside For the eggs Benedict, the hollandaise sauce was delicious, creamy, and buttery. They didn't skimp out on it either. Paired with the Canadian bacon, poached egg, and English muffin, it was perfect. I even had some extra sauce to dip my hash browns in. Definitely come here for the breakfast! I'm super stuffed as I'm writing this now and I want to take a nap. The service is really good as well

The absolute best diner I've been to…read more The place itself is stunning. It's newly renovated but still has a diner feel, just with some upgrades like a live DJ and a solarium-like addition. Parking is also highly convenient. The menu is extensive and I can't wait to go back to try everything they have. There are the classic breakfast items of course, but they also have some innovative dishes or familiar dishes with a spin. I ordered the jerk chicken pasta which was spicy, so flavorful and also a great portion size. Others in our party ordered pancakes, which were so fluffy, eggs, fried chicken, fried catfish and more. Everything was fried to perfection and the catfish tasted like it had literally just jumped out of the ocean. Our waiter was super nice and we had a big party so I'm sure it wasn't easy. My only suggestion is that they make their hot drinks hotter. Other than that, I'd seriously come back every weekend.

READ FULL REVIEW!!!…read more March 2026: First time at this establishment was just ok. Hosted a very small get-together here (5 guest). Atmosphere was nice. Music was wayy too loud to hear the person you're sitting next to. Food was tasty and fresh. Coffee was good with great creamer selection (at the time). Our server was my least favorite part of this experience. He was over the top with his energy and upscale tactics (pushy with getting us to order extra drinks and appetizers despite declining). I was hosting this event and did not need him selling us after already being told "no, thank you" twice. It was awkward and ultimately changed the vibe. He hardly checked on us after that encounter and we constantly had to remind them about request that were never brought out to the table. Staff needs to be trained better. This was just an ok experience. April 2026 : What ultimately lead me to write this review was my 2nd experience at this diner. The server was a lot better than our first experience, but we did run into a few too many problems. First, we ordered coffee and are informed that per managements request, we can only have half-half or cream with our coffee. Previously they had French vanilla creamers and other flavored creamers but I guess management decided to save on the additional cost. This was a bummer especially realizing that they could easily afford creamers. This restaurant easily pulls at least $150,000 per week in revenue, so I didn't understand cheapening out like that. I still ordered the coffee. When it came to the table I added the cream into the cup only to find something floating in the coffee. I send it back and ask for a new cup, which the server politely provided. We order our meals and all goes well. Eventually two of the three meals come out and we wait for the final plate to come out. It's common courtesy to wait for everyone to have their meal before eating, so we wait. We wait about 6-7 minutes and the final plate comes out only for it to be cold. All of us ordered breakfast, so you can imagine trying to eat cold egg, potato, and sausage. We ask for the waiter, but before he could get to us the manager passes by and we let him know the issue. He takes the plate to the back and about two minutes later he comes back with the same exact plate. Before the manager arrived to take the plate away, I saw the guest split the egg half and add black pepper on everything so we knew it was the same plate and food she started eating off of that was reheated onto the kitchen grill where other food is being prepared for guest. The manager informs us that he had the chef heat the food up on the griddle and that it should be a perfect temperature. We refuse to accept the plate because it was reheated and not remade entirely. We were shocked that this was the solution even being offered. Reheating food on the griddle seemed unsafe (contamination risk, diseases, illness, etc) and offensive. No one pays these prices to have reheated breakfast served to them. I could've just made that at home for a fraction of the price. We politely refuse the reheated plate and he apologized and took the plate to the back. The server comes over to see what the issue is and we explain everything. He says that he will look into it and take that meal off the bill. Now I'm frustrated because one out of the three of us aren't eating anything and the experience was off. At this point, I'm not eating my meal but the 3rd guest is eating. So the guest who sent their plate back and myself are waiting for the 3rd guest to finish their pancakes. He ordered a stack of 4-5 chocolate chip pancakes and was happily eating away at layer by layer. Eventually he gets to the last 2 pancakes and before he adds syrup he notices what appeared to be an eyelash or short piece of hair imbedded in the pancake. Picture of the clearly imbedded hair included with this review. He immediately stopped eating and looks sick. He had already eaten 3-4 pancakes by then and the idea that he ate more of whatever that was felt unnerving, to say the least. We both start looking to see what he's looking at and long behold the hair was there. At this point we are extremely frustrated and completely over this experience. Management did not make this experience right even after addressing all of these issues both separately and together. I felt like my money was not valued and my business certainly wasn't. They did nothing to remedy these issues and I will NOT be going back to this establishment. This restaurant may look visually beautiful but the service is not. Staff needs more training, music needs to be turned down, chefs need to wear hairnets and everyone needs to follow safe food handling skills. You're putting your guest and your business at risk ignoring these issues. I really really wish I had a better experience.

This was easily the best meal we've had in New Jersey during the past month…read more It was a rainy day in Wayne and we started late, so we decided to stop by Pompton Queen Diner. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality stood out. We were the only Asian group in the restaurant, and the host/manager made us feel genuinely welcome. Even though the wait was busy and around 40 minutes, he still found moments to chat with us and keep the mood light, which made the time pass quickly. Our server was absolutely wonderful. I didn't catch her name, but she was friendly, energetic, warm, and incredibly personable. When she learned we were visiting from China and had spent more time in places like Los Angeles before coming to New Jersey for the first time, she happily shared stories about the local area and made us feel right at home. Her kindness completely changed the feeling of a cold, rainy day. The food was outstanding. We finished everything, even though we were already full, because it was just that good. This is the kind of place where the food is satisfying, the portions are generous, and the experience feels real. I made sure to leave my tip directly for our server because she truly earned it. If there's ever an opportunity for recognition or promotion, I hope management knows what a gem they have on their team. Pompton Queen Diner is a reminder of why classic American diners matter so much. In a time when so many places focus only on trendy Instagram aesthetics, this restaurant offers something far more valuable: genuine warmth, personality, and heart. I was greeted by the host, and despite how packed the diner was upon arrival, they'll take one's cell # and then text when the table is ready. The wait was never too long--about 15 minutes.  Their menu remains never-ending, and even the pickiest of eaters will find something on the menu to order. We decided on the Chicken Pot Pie accompanied by House Salad with Salami as well as Bronzino & Shrimp Francaise with Italian Sausage Soup.  The food was tasty, well seasoned, and arrived hot. Portions were large. We had a nice server, Randall, who was attentive and accommodating. The price was comparable to the area.  Another great dining experience!
