Hanging around downtown Round Rock and my nephew got hungry and wanted something more substantial than donuts. Recuerdos was in walking distance so we made our way over. For a Saturday afternoon it was pretty quiet. We were the only ones there so it was pretty silent. It seemed like they had reopened or something, seemed like most of the attention was in the back and not out front but they our server came by and dropped of some chips and salsa. I looked at the menu and it was very Texmex, so much so that I didn't feel any guilt whatsoever in ordering hard shell tacos. Since we already got the chips we decided to get their queso as well. The food basically all arrived at the same time and the queso was served in a small soup cup-TONs of their queso and since it was family, double dipping the queso into the salsa was not judged; pretty decent. My tacos were good-the lettuce, tomatoes and cheese were just kind of tossed on top and not in but I guess that's what I get for ordering hard shell tacos. My experience at Recuerdos was probably atypical. The place is full of customers and they generally seem happy. * * * I ordered the menudo off the menu. The waitress had to check in the back ... But yes, they could do menudo. The menudo tasted fine. * * * When I left, there was a definite bad taste in my mouth. Either the tripe was old and bad or something else in the soup was old and bad. My vote is the tripe. * * * I do NOT think what I had is standard for what they have at Recuerdos. I suspect when I ordered the menu - The waitress went to the kitchen. At first - it seemed they were out ... But wait ... They still had some menudo they could serve. That menudo was probably past its time. That said - the kitchen staff and the waitress were trying to be nice. * * * I kind of wish the staff had been a little less nice And a little stricter on food sanitation and pull dates. That said - I didn't die. These were some fat breakfast tacos that were so tasty and a good price. I got one egg and potato taco and one egg and sausage taco. The salsa had a nice, mild taste, which I appreciated. Some of it was super watery though, so there was salsa water coming out of my taco, but I can look past that because the tacos were so good. They charge a 4% fee for using card, which I wish I had checked before so that I could have come prepared with cash. Thankfully, the breakfast tacos were well priced, and it was $6.65 total for two tacos with the fee. It seems like a small family-owned business, so the fee is understandable. They also have a sign about it on the door, which I was glad about. There was a weird moment when the server handed me my taco bag. I said thank you, and she gave me such a chilling look that I got scared. I'm going to hope that I totally misinterpreted that though. She was friendly initially. After we had ordered, the people came inside and sat down at the table next to us. They were three of them, and they all received their food prior to us receiving our food even though they came in well after us and ordered well after us. For the past six years whenever I ordered the gentleman special the taco always came out Before the food. I didn't even get my taco before the table next to us was served their food. My taco came out with my enchiladas. They were through eating and left at the same time. We finally got our food. The lady never offered to bring me anything to drink. She didn't give us any silverware before or after she put the food on the table. She never came back and checked on us, but she made sure to drop off the bill. She asked us to turn off the open sign for her and was more interested in cleaning the tables than she was tending to the customers. The service is starting to slide backwards to the old Recuerdos and people are going to stop coming again. You just had an advertisement on the city of round rock website talking about a family restaurant, but there was no more than four tables to tonight and it couldn't have been worse. This is a cute hole in the wall tucked between Rocky's Piano Bar and the Longbranch Saloon in downtown Round Rock. It's an intimate dining room with a welcoming family atmosphere. Our server was very attentive, and we never ran out of chips, salsa, or water. I ordered the cheese enchilada plate with refried beans, and everything was delicious. We order recuerdos for breakfast on weekends from time to time, usually through doordash as we did earlier today. Overall, I love the food at recuerdos... it's great to help with hangover recovery imo. Today we had a carne guisada burrito and an enchilada plate with 1 beef and 1 cheese with rice and beans. Both plates came with chips and salsa and the burrito came with queso too. I wouldn't say I love their queso (maybe too salty) but it does the job. The salsa is pretty good though. The enchilada plate is our usual go-to and is so good. Sometimes we'll get that and a breakfast taco each. The burrito was tasty but a bit small for the price compared to the enchiladas, I probably won't get it again. read more

The WORST tacos we've had in our entire life. They don't even know how to spell Chicharrón. Stopped by this morning 01/14/24 after church for breakfast. I've been noticing their window when I'm downtown that says they have homemade tortillas so I was excited. Hard to find them around here these days. Wife and I ordered the one bean and bacon taco, one carne guisada taco, one barbacoa taco and one potato egg and bacon. All tacos were ordered on flour tortillas except the barbacoa which we ordered on corn. We also ordered menudo with flour tortillas. As soon the tacos came out we immediately knew the tortillas were store bought. We asked the waitress if they were "homemade" as the window stated and she says "No they aren't, we need to take that down." Food was good not great and obviously the tortillas were below average at best. I would not return as there are better options for sure. I had to add salsa and salt to the menudo and the carne guisada was like warm. Right before we left a guy came in and asked if they sold their tortillas to go? They said yes he ordered a dozen of each flour and corn to go. We spoke to him briefly. He was visiting from Florida and wanted to take tortillas home to make food when he got back and to share with his family authentic from Texas. My guess is he was enticed by the sign on the window. Recardos in the town of roundrock is a must stop! The green chili enchiladas are amazing! Just like home cooking with plenty of flavor. Nice chips and salsa, rice, and beans. A good hearty plate. I just moved to the area and have been struggling to find super good food. This place really impressed me. The green chicken enchiladas were so good. The chicken was good quality and proportioned well. But what really makes the enchiladas remarkable is the sauce. The chips and salsa they give you with your meal is also so good and fresh. So glad I beat the rush last week for Cinco de Mayo and got my dishes for lunch. I had been seeing posts online for how good this place was and I'm so glad I ventured out to try it. Can't say enough about the salsa. Good heat and it has good chunk-osity. The queso compuesto had the right viscosity to stick to the chips. The SO loved the chicken enchilada plate. Mine was the Gentleman's Special. Loved the "gravy" which coated the enchiladas. That's the best treat to scoop up with chips when you want to clean the plate. And no better way than to celebrate than with a icy margarita. They haven't missed a beat in the Service or the quality of food coming out of the kitchen. Portions are big, price is fair and just plain delicious. What a great find in the heart of downtown Round Rock. I was on my way back to DFW from Austin and needed to stop for lunch. I wanted to get out of the car and I wanted Tex-Mex. That, in a nutshell, is how I ended up at Recuerdos. And honestly how can you not stop at a place where the window has a huge sign that says "Best Enchiladas in Town"? So I ordered the cheese enchilada plate. It was just the right amount of food for someone who hadn't eaten in nearly 8 hours. I ate most of the chips and salsa as well. The salsa was spicy and the chips had enough heft to do their job while not overpowering the salsa's flavor. Everything was obviously homemade. And it was very very good. I can see how this place could get packed, with a limited number of tables. Trust me - it's worth the wait and it's worth making a stop at the next time I head south towards Austin. read more
