Vegan bowl

This is a cute place in a beautiful location but our vegan meal was very expensive. I had the vegan bowl (which was tasty) and added tofu and the tofu was and additional SEVEN DOLLARS.... Also online the vegan mousse shows as $8 but they charged me $12 for a tiny portion which was just ok as far as taste. I paid for one bowl, no drink, and two mousses and my bill was $54. The service was okay. With tip it was $64 with no drinks!!!!

Seafood Chowder. Two scallops on top.

Seafood chowder was excellent. Light cream broth with fresh vegetables and seafood. Topped with two seared scallops. A gourmet version.

Definitely impressed with the lunch menu and the unique variety of options. If you're looking for something better than a sandwich or are tired of fish and chips (is that possible?), then for sure give this a shot. We sat outside where there is lots of spaced out seating and umbrellas for those hot days. Service was pretty decent and prices were fair. If you want something beyond awesome, get the fish cakes. They make them with rice and curry and they're absolutely amazing. Comes with a pretty healthy portion of a nice garden salad. While we did give this place 4 stars, we were left disappointed by the Hawaiian fish tacos. We were pretty excited about them but they ended up being pretty bland which was a stark contrast to the fish cakes. Perhaps some pickled beets or even lemon dill sauce would give them a bit more flavour. I will say that the three tacos were a really good size (big enough to share) and the side salad was also pretty decent sized. Despite not being impressed with the tacos, I'm sure that this is still a really great place to eat and we'd give other menu items a shot.

Delicious home-cooked flavor, great house-made balsamic, food nicely presented, and even a few adventurous combinations like the chocolate avocado mousse. The careworn cramped interior lined with local artist's canvases has bright pastel walls and antique furniture. The Italian tomato soup was particularly flavorful and fresh. The red-currant tart was certainly tart, but balanced by a drizzle of sweet red currant sauce and a heavier pastry closer to shortcake. The avocado mousse, frankly, had a little too much earthy flavor of avocado, but was creamy smooth and richly chocolate and it was a nice departure from the standard mousse. All in all a pleasant stop for lunch.

This is a great little restaurant. Very fresh food with unique recipes. We had the fish cakes, grilled cheese and soup of the day which was vegetable beef. The vegetable beef soup was puréed. There are trivia cards on the tables and the tables are chalk boards. Great for keeping everyone entertained while waiting.

I had the large seafood chowder and lobster bruschetta crostini (appetizer) for lunch. The chowder was divine, but a warning: a large is TOO MUCH. By the time I finished all the protein in my chowder (I had to leave a lot of potatoes behind), I was too full to eat the lobster crostini. Each chowder (small or large) comes with a smoked salmon-wrapped scallop in the bowl. Very nice and unique feature that to me was enough to justify the price ($8 for small and $12 for large). I did manage to have 1 crostini (it comes with 4), and the taste was good. I think it would have been better warmer. The restaurant was quaint and casual. They have an outdoor patio that overlooks Mahone Bay, but It was too cold to be out. The inside was nice and cozy though. Th service was friendly. You pay at the front and they accept cash debit or credit (although they do have signs around encouraging customers to pay by cash or debit (http://www.cfib.ca/debitcredit). I gladly paid by cash.

But the hostess found a place for us in the bar area. Our server, Kathy, was professional and personable. She took care of us with both speed and consideration for our desired pace. We ordered a couple of their Betty's... pizzas. I had the Broderick which was meaty and delicious. My husband had the Ford, much lighter with yummy sun dried tomatoes and a good combo of veggies. Gotta love their dark sense of humor! It was darn cold that night and the most warm and welcoming place in Mahone Bay was sitting close to the wood-fired pizza oven. And the live entertainment was a fun soundtrack for our night at Betty's. Highly recommend. And we will be back soon for another wood-fired Betty!

Our waitress was nice and helped answer our questions honestly, mostly about the pizza sizes. They look huge because of their diameter, but they're so thin that they are still single serve. I went with the White (one of a few Golden Girls references on the menu). As a huge Golden Girls fan and animal lover, I was so happy to see that a portion of the proceeds from each of this specific pizza would go toward animal charities-something Betty White would've absolutely loved! We were pleasantly surprised that they had trivia on the night we went, which they apparently have every Tuesday! Our table had fun answering questions together while we waited for our food. We actually tied with another table for first place, which would've given us money off our bill but we started late. My pizza was really good. My husband loves his tacos as well; he just said they could've been a little more filling.

Accommodating and extremely friendly folks with excellent hand pies!…read more We are traveling on three east coast on NS, where each and every town has its signature flavor and feel, whee Mahone Bay is no different. It was mid-day, where a snack was needed to get us to dinner time, and Yelp to the rescue again. A quick search turned up Famous Town Pie Shop, and what an excellent choice this was in more ways than one. It turns out Yelp's hours of operation for this place are wrong, so we showed up just as they were closing. Being the chubby Merkans that we are, I tried the door handle and they were still open (thankfully). We were greeted with favor though as the nice staff welcomed us to try the last pies of the day. I asked for them to surprise me with whatever was available and settled on two savory pies. Uh-mazing! It had been a while since I'd last had a really good savory pie, and good ones are most certainly not available in the Southeastern U.S. of A, so this experience was amplified a bit. The crust was spot-on, the fillings were flavorful, and the portion size definitely is large enough for most North Americans. Once we scarfed down the pies outside, the owner came outside and gave us some outstanding recommendations on NS and excellent conversation. I would visit this place in a heartbeat again if we are ever in the area. This is one of those little gems that we love stumbling upon in our travels.

I had the breakfast sandwich with bacon and egg on chive bread with homemade tomato jam and my hubby had a freshly made omelette. We took two cinnamon buns to go! Hi! WELL, what a pleasant surprise! A new Restaurant…read morethat sprung up! We arrived just as they closed, haha... but they let us in to chat and buy some of their DELICIOUS baking... Which is ALL made from scratch!! All their Breads are home made and NOT brought in, like at the Rose Bistro down the road.... The owner of this "Hungry Traveler" and their staff are warm and kind people! There is outside Patio Seating, TONS of Parking, and it's at: 10117 Highway 3... Phone: 902-518-2535 .... It's on the way to the Rose Bistro, [which we will NEVER patronize again]... Their menu is "All Day Breakfast"... and Sandwich type Brunch! They also cater trays... They have a "Build your OWN" Breakfast... The place is seemingly serene... [with none of the 'out of control' kids or over-crowding, like at that Rose Bistro down the road]... Their food offerings are cheaper and budget friendly....And they do not 'push you through' to get to the next customer, like the Bistro... The Brunch Sandwiches look amazing... and we intend to eat our way through their menu offerings!! The Sandwiches are decent sized... with HOME-MADE Bread!! We are going back for their Vietnamese Sandwich... It's traditional, right down to the marinated Chicken, Pickled Daikon & Carrot Slaw, fresh Cilantro etc.... The Curried Chicken looks great, and so does the Vegan Mashed Buffalo Chick Peas... It will be hard to decide what to eat after the Vietnamese Sandwich for sure!!! And the place is immaculate! The "Hungry Traveler" has our attention and our cash! Reading between the lines, you can probably tell we had just experienced "A Brunch from hell" at the Rose Bistro down the road... screaming/crying kids...Parents ignoring the bad behavior, some were running around... ...We grabbed our cutlery and water and went outside... We DIDN'T enjoy our meal which cost around $48.00 ... We had some nice times there, but are fed up with the WILDLIFE... this was a BOMB...and we will never return.

I will start by saying that I can absolutely appreciate the impact of the pandemic on restaurants…read more Having said that, putting up posters claiming that there's a 'labour shortage' is just bad practice. Had we noticed that prior to ordering, we would have walked out. We were pretty hungry from driving on our road trip and wanted a decent sit down meal and found pretty good reviews for this place. Upon ordering, it was immediately clear why there was a 'labour shortage' for this owner. The person taking our order at the counter (no table service currently), was the most surly old hag I've ever met. If I wasn't already so hangry and didn't have to wait another hour for one of the other restaurants to open, I would have walked right out. She was crotchety and just seemed generally angry to have to be doing any work at her own establishment. It's really too bad because the food was pretty good here but we couldn't get past how awful of a person this owner was. When the one and only staff member came out to ask us how our meal was, we had to ask if that lady was the owner and what her problem was. We told her that we were surprised anyone would run their business like that and she agreed by shaking her head but almost afraid to say anything. I really regret coming here and would not recommend it solely on the terrible attitude of the owner and the very obvious horrible working conditions for staff working here.
