One of Chicago's best keep secrets! Without question, I LOVE this place and have used it countless times to start the night! It equally wooed the dozen plus I've brought here ...though not having to pay may have biased them just a bit! (wink) [See below, concerns about price]
Still, what's not to like? It's got a great location. The décor is chic, fun, and modern yet still sophisticated and classy. "Modern Style and Classic Sophistication" is one of their tag-lines and I think it describes it perfectly. The gorgeous view looking down the Chicago River out to the lake is spectacular and sets a great tone for the evening. The drinks are some of the best in town and the service has always been top notch. Unlike for my friend Brett D, it has never been slow in my experience and actually quite the contrary. Topping this all off, they offer some truly amazing Japanese themed appetizers and sushi.
Perhaps the part I like the best is the crowd. While possibly a little laid back and in some ways quiet compared to some of the other lounges, Rebar really is a great people watching place with clientele often having genuine cool originality and even sometimes refreshingly eccentric style. It's definitely not your typically Chicago club mix and unlike some of the individuals you might run into at some of the other lounges who think they are something because they know the guy at the door, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the Rebar crowd weren't actually the real deal. At Rebar, there is no pretentious line at the door and I personally find the crowd to be a much more refreshingly diverse group.
*** TIP ***: Being only a couple short blocks from the Purple Pig, Rebar is a great way to wait for your table. Put your name in (and phone number) at the Purple Pig, walk over to Rebar, have a drink..maybe some appetizers (I always do), and wait for your table to come up. I've done this three times and it works great!
So back to the question, so what's not to like? Besides the fact the beautiful view down the Chicago river used to be my office view before the Trump building blocked it (seriously I'm over it ...now), the place is by most people's standards pretty pricey. Expect your drink to be $10 or more...emphasis on more. Even a beer will set you back maybe $8-12 bucks while a specialty martini being like $15-17 if not more. Some of the sushi rolls are in the $25 range and even a basic spicy tuna roll (though immaculate in appearance) is $12. To give you an even better idea, one drink plus appetizers was more than the entire dinner bill at Purple Pig. Being overly expensive is the only reason I give Rebar four stars instead of five. Maybe that's not fair though since perhaps it's the high pricing that keeps the atmosphere and clientele what it is and quite frankly it's the wealthier crowd that Trump is trying to cater to here so crazy pricing is not to be unexpected.
Items tried during last visit:
The Scrooge - straight off the new holiday drink menu this martini comprised of jalapeño infused vodka, cinnamon, and a few other things I don't exactly remember was amazing. All I can say is WOW what a divine collage of flavors that changes as it goes down.
Akami, Chutoro, Otoro Tuna Nigiri - this tour of different types of tuna was super fresh but perhaps not the absolute best I've had; even at Rebar previously. That's not to say I didn't really like it....I did.
Spicy Tuna Roll - I'm not sure the presentation could have been much better but other than that, I found this roll to be quite average in taste. My recommendation is to pass on this one. It's not worth the $12 dollars. That said , if you are truly dying for a basic (save for the red tobiko caviar on top) spicy tuna roll, you probably won't be disappointed.
Prism Roll - a combination of shrimp tempura, assorted fish, and avocado dressed with marinated jalapeños, chives, and red tobiko caviar. The jalapeños made it a perfect match for my drink but by itself while very fresh and good was not completely mind blowing.
Rebar won't be for everyone, but if the above sounds intriguing and the prices don't scare you off, definitely check it out. It may just be one of your favorite spots. read more
