The customer service is appalling . Chris is our service manager and we now can't get him to respond to issues regarding product shipment. The claim was that their internet service was down for 3 weeks, so they couldn't get back to us. The build was incorrect, poorly managed and ultimately doesn't work for its purpose. Over $30,000.00 spent on Barn Doors, but once our deposit was collected we received very poor communication and very poor execution. Look elsewhere! read more

I purchased a custom 42x80" cherry wood barn door from real carriage doors. This barn door went over the master bathroom opening that the builder of my new house decided wasn't needed. I beg to differ. Gorgeous door once I got it installed, the craftsmanship is top notch. Customer service was great too, the first one had a massive gouge in the wood from a rogue forklift during shipping transit even though it was crated very well. (Dammit, Fedex.) I refused delivery of it and Apryl (who isn't with the company anymore) took care of it. I had a replacement within 2.5 weeks that arrived without any damage in less of a crate, go figure. However, the installation instructions leave a lot to be desired. I didn't realize I needed a ledger board until I was ready to install it. This requirement really needs to be clearly visible on their website and during the ordering process to avoid delays and frustration. If you don't want to open up the drywall to install blocking to support the weight of the door you really need this part for the installation to be significantly easier! Yes, you can technically install the door directly to studs over drywall, but not an easy process and not worth the risk to my family with something falling off the wall that weights upwards of 100lbs. I had to wait another 3 weeks for this matched cherry wood finish ledger board to arrive. Even after installing this, the installation was far from easy and took me at least 4 times as long as I expected. Literally took me almost a month from start to finish only being able to work on it at nights/mostly weekends. Another source of frustration on the instruction is the lack of clarity in most parts of the instructions. During the installation of the ledger board, there are no instructions for which screws you should be using to mount the rail to the board. I ended up using the wrong screws and messed up one of the t-nuts that were preinstalled in the board. Apryl took care of me again and sent replacements, but was a source of frustration that could have been easily prevented with clear step by step instructions. Also, it doesn't actually explicitly tell you that you need to actually drill holes in the top rail that the door slides on to install the soft closers that I ordered with the door. The instructions just show a part breakdown diagram image for installing the soft closers that isn't clear. I decided to not even use them and bought clamp on soft closers off of Amazon that do the same job, the clamps are the same color as the rail and almost blend right in. Overall, great craftsmanship on the wood products. Extremely poor confusing instructions which made the installation difficult and very, very frustrating! If I were to do this over again, I would buy the door and ledger board from this company again and look elsewhere for the actual hardware. read more

I sincerely regret purchasing from this company. The previous reviewer was right that customer service is abysmal, but unfortunately they have poor ethics and quality to match. I was initially thrilled to receive my barn door hardware so promptly. But I quickly learned of numerous flaws in both their hardware and their instructions. While I was able to compensate for some of the issues myself, others were fatal flaws, including a safety issue. I brought my concerns to the company's attention and asked to return one of the small pieces that was incompatible with the other parts. They were uninterested in the feedback and said they don't accept returns on "installed" hardware, no matter the reason. Obviously, they don't stand by their product. I wish I could leave 50 stars. I worked with Carrie , in the design department,for a very large custom barn door for my livingroom. I have a huge 72 inch entryway from my livingroom into my den and I wanted a door that would work well for the space. I also knew I did not want biparting doors, but one large custom door. Carrie made it possible, sent drawings, photos, until we got it right. She also politely suggested seeded glass windows which are so beautiful. I waited several weeks and when the door finally arrived, there were a few areas on the door that I was not happy with, the door had a large knot and I did not want such a rustic appearing door. Real Carriage did not argue with me, charge me, etc. They told me they would remake the door as they wanted me to be happy!!! Imagine this, in 2018?!!!! The door is solid walnut, to remake the door for free and absorb all costs is unbelievable. They remade the door and it is so beautiful. Please see attached picture. Totally Disappointing. I had a very disappointing experiencing with the entire transaction with this company. Paying over $1000 for a 6ft steel bar and 4 wheels and based on their website statements I was led to believe I was dealing with the top producer of barndoors and barndoor hardware (Real Carriage Door Co.) and buying a very premium product from a trusted company. This was far from the case. First) My pre sales experience was nothing short of a complete failure. I worked on the phone with the sales person and they were unable to provide me with any help or additional information about the products that would suit my use case best. For example after explaining that the door was for a bathroom in a single room guest house the sales person neglected to inform me that they offered a "hush" wheel upgrade to make the door operate silently. I found out only after the order was placed and had to call back and speak with another sales person to get them to send a second order to me with those upgraded wheels. Costing me more money and time. Second) My order arrived almost a week late and in various shipments causing me to keep people on the job site for several days awaiting delivery. In addition to the week delay, This "ungrouped shipping" is a cost saving measure REAL decided to use, but was never communicated to me and was a major inconvenience. After a week of delays and no hardware I had to contact them a third time to simply get them to advise me this is the shipping services they decided to use. Third) My Real BarnDoor( Real Carriage Door Co.) hardware finally arrived but with damage to the parts. In addition to the damage the color matching options that a paid extra for was damaged and the powder paint was completely removed exposing the raw steel underneath. The packaging of the parts was completely inadequate to protect the parts in transit. Simply cardboard with a plastic sleeve over the metal. No foam, no extra protection on each end of the box, leaving only the bare metal product to take the brunt of the wear and tear during shipping. Which arrived damaged. Forth) When I contact the company about the damaged products ( that have a costs of $1,100+ CAD for just the hardware alone) all they offered initially was to send me a bottle of paint and told me to fix it myself. I told them that was unacceptable and I unless we can come to an agreement I would like the damaged parts to be replaced by non-damaged parts. I was told they need approval to RMA and had to wait to find out what they would decide. After a day of waiting I was informed they would send me replacement parts. read more

Terrible experience. From dealing with the girl who was placing my order and helping decide what was needed for our project to the actual product. The hardware we ordered was ordered as oil rubbed bronze, but in reality it's brown hardware. I was very specific in our order, specifying hush wheels, and each time the sales girl missed half of what I requested in the emails. She got our address wrong multiple times even after I corrected it twice. Our doors were incredibly late. They told us 10-12 business days. When it didn't arrive I followed up (mind you they never contacted me), and was told they would ship by the next Friday at the latest. Nope that didn't happen either. I emailed, no response. Called, no one answered, not the sales girl, not the receptionist, not when pressing 3 for customer service. The following business day we were told they were ready to ship and we would have tracking info by end of day...yeah that didn't happen either. When we finally got ahold of someone 3 days later we finally got shipping information. The doors were finally delivered, 22 business days when quoted 10-12. The doors are ok, but definitely thinner then we thought and not great craftsmanship for the price we paid. This process was a nightmare. read more

Our experience with RCD was initially satisfying but turned into a nightmare.   We worked with their team to order two garage doors. Their products are beautiful, but an error they made left us in a terrible position. There were a number of smaller issues that have been echoed by other yelpers: poor installation advice, waiting for shipping, having to ask for a refund after different (but less expensive) hardware was sent. However, the most egregious mistake cost us thousands, which we attempted to recoup at small claims court.  We worked with their team to customize our doors. Each door had 5 glass panels, the bottom 3 cloudy, top 2 clear. After we had approved the plan, a size issue with the clear glass resulted in a design change. Glass panel length was the only change needed but someone at RCD also changed the door height from 84" to 89". Upon receiving the new drawing we noted the glass change and signed off on the new plan. Admittedly we did not see the height change. Through the design process we had sent video and photos of the 84" height with a tape measure in view- height was not in debate. Obviously the professional staff at RCD did not notice this change either, but the customer is supposed to.   When the doors arrived they were 5" too tall. We would have preferred to return them; but we had already paid $600 in shipping and RCD would not have accepted them anyway since they were a custom order. At no point did RCD acknowledge that this was their mistake or take any responsibility. We did have a conference call with various team members but they were mistaken in how they believed we could simply solve the problem. Both our contractors on the call felt that their attempt at helping was well-intentioned but inadequate.   It became clear that our only option was to demolish the garage opening to make an additional 5" height for the doors. This became a $6k retrofit bill, with labor, materials, earthquake provision, etc. We had splurged on this as an anniversary present, and had been excited to support a US company, which we were recommending to friends and family while waiting for the doors. The project now took an additional 3 months to complete.  When this happened, we believed RCD would take responsibility and offer us some sort of refund. We were completely let down. They never acknowledged any responsibility whatsoever or ever said they were sorry this had happened. Instead, we were treated as if it was 100% our fault since we signed off on the drawing. We reviewed a glass change, but were expected to notice the height was randomly changed when they themselves did not. The judge at small claims was understanding, but felt she had no choice but to rule in their favor because we had signed the contract. She agreed it was unfair but said her hands were tied. We were instructed in court to try to settle, but the GM would not budge. He was not willing to offer any compromise at all. "You signed" was all he offered. But you know your employee made the mistake, I said. " You signed" over and over he replied. I even asked him if I was his sister or daughter how would he want them to be treated? There was no ethical behavior or responsibility from this company. In my belief system and in my own company, if you know you're at fault you have to admit it and make amends- at least compromise. I asked him why not sell the doors at cost? So you don't lose any money but you don't make money on a mistake that you made? He would not talk to me - no discussion. He would barely look at me. If I had been a man in a suit I doubt that would have been the case. It was disrespectful and unfair. RCD was comfortable charging top dollar and making their normal profit while fully knowing that they had cost us thousands more from a mistake they made. The judge did make them send the $600 difference in door hardware cost, resulting in the change in height, which they had not even offered until we challenged them about it. Sadly, I can imagine that a rebuttal will follow this review stating that we signed and they tried to help us figure it out. Please understand the management at this company had no interest in being fair or accountable. None. We did compel them to make a trip to CA for small claims court, but they could have made an offer long before that. To have been so excited to work with a US company and even showing their website to people and then be treated so unfairly was demoralizing. They had options to still make money but treat their customer fairly. We lost our respect for them and a little bit of faith too in the honesty of people. Not unlike leaving a car dealership after purchasing - when you know you no longer mean anything at all to them. This was a massive error that we alone had to bear the brunt of. read more

I researched many vendors to supply the sliding barn doors that were requested for one of our projects. At first it seemed that Real would be a good fit for the project. Their initial customer service justified the higher cost. Then we received the shipment. While under a tight time constraint, we had scheduled a carpenter to install the door. We made the crucial mistake of not checking the shipment first. We came to find out that they forgot to ship the crucial "adjustable end stop" piece. We immediately called and informed Real and we were asked to take photos of everything that we had, as if we were trying to lie about their mistake. After finally admitting that they forgot to ship the piece, they said they would ship the part "ground," which would be DAYS. I objected and they offered to ship the part "two day" delivery, but that still was not fast enough for us. I finally had to agree that I would pay for next day shipping. This company clearly does not understand the time sensitive nature of high end general contracting. So in the end, I will end up paying to recover from their mistake. I highly recommend researching other vendors that are accustomed to dealing with time sensitive and high end work. Many experienced trades people warn me of not purchasing supplies locally and buying online, but I always give them a hard time for not taking advantage of the new way of doing things. Do not use this company. I too waited endlessly for product to arrive. No one seems to know what when where or how. Fast forward three years: our exterior hardware has completely rusted out and had to be re-hung by our contractor. I called to order new bolts, washers and needed parts. They charged me $190. for the parts even though it was ONLY three years old. I finally succumbed to the price because I had no choice but asked them to rush the package so that my contractor would not have to wait. They had the audacity to tell me they don't rush parts AND then proceeded to send it to the wrong address. I will never do business with this company again. read more

I just received my order and it was wrong. Ordered Hush Wheels and got regular stainless. When I called customer service it took a few tries to straighten out my order that I was supposed to have Hush Wheels. Unfortunately the Hush is also on back order and this puts my project on hold. Other companies I have worked with over night shipped any errors but this company could not confirm shipment but they made sure I was to send back the wrong product. The representatives with the company were professional and extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of their products. The initial order arrived on time and my contractor was able to assemble the door and hardware easily. I decided to order an additional handle and inadvertently ordered the incorrect one; totally my mistake. When I notified the company, they graciously shipped out the correct hardware that very day and expedited the return of the incorrect part. I would NOT do business with this place again. The door that they sent me would not work with the handle set that they sent me. AND the pre drilling they did on the door for the handles was incorrect. Unfortunately my contractor didn't realize this until after his crew had hung the door. The handle set had to be sent back. After much delay they agreed to send me a new door. My contractor returned and hung that door but the added work cost me another $400. Real Carriage Doors refused to be held responsible for any of the extra charge due to their "warranty policy." I had to place the defective door in the shipping crate the new door arrived in and then screw it down and ship it back to them. Terrible craftsmanship and pathetic customer service from this place.
