Delicious food! We ordered To-Go and it was super tasty. It must be even BETTER when devoured in person. We catered brisket, ribs, pulled pork w/ green beans, mac n cheese, and potato salad. In addition, we ordered loaded baked potato w/ brisket. Meats weren't dry, tender, and smoked to perfection. Sides were all tasty. The mac n cheese was sinful and the potato salad tasted as if my grandma made it from home. The loaded baked potato was HUGE and plenty to have as leftovers. My boyfriend and I decided today that we were on a quest to find the best BBQ in Norman, and we found it! We went to Vans to compare, but Ray's BBQ was by far the best where the meat was concerned. We got the ribs, turkey, and brisket, and all three were cooked to perfection. We both agreed that the ribs were about the best we'd ever had, especially paired with their tasteful BBQ sauce. Ray'sBBQ is very good. I really like the chicken. I just wish it came as individual pieces instead of entire half of a chicken. Okra is always hot and crispy. Very good bread. And the baked potatoes are also very delicious. The drinks station is another story. Its usually not very clean. There is not sweet tea that does not taste like watermelon/raspberry tea. The silverware is plastic. So that makes it kind of difficult to use cutting up food for your child. Service is spotty. Sometimes the people are very nice. I love this place for lunch! Go early, or go late. Between 12:15pm and 1:00pm, it's hard to find a seat, and it's so loud you cannot talk. Any other lunch time the noise level is loud, but not too bad. At off-times it's really quiet. Their ribs are great, brisket is lean and tender, smoked turkey is a little salty, but good, and the sausage is really flavorful and moist. The potato salad is the best I've ever had (sorry, Mom!), green beans are they way my grandmother made them on the farm with a little bacon grease and onions (YUM!), french fries are fresh, baked beans are sweet but spicy, and the Texas toast is not over buttered. The brisket and turkey sandwiches are also really good. I think that's all I've tried. They have a mild BBQ sauce that's alright, and a hot one that's several steps hotter than the mild. Prices are low. There is a lunch combo (6oz meat, 2 sides, toast, drink) for around $8, I think. Dinner plates run about $10 if I recall. Service is really fast, no matter how busy it is. The atmosphere is interesting, with lots of old Norman stuff around, and old pictures of BBQ stands and the like. I'd say it's your typical hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint, but a little cleaner. They cater at my work a lot, and are top notch. Always friendly, helpful, and keep the food bins (buffet style) full. Everything you could want in BBQ! I don't come home as much as I want to. But when I do, Ray's is on the top of my list. They always have friendly, efficient, and considerate staff. It's great to have new family memories in a building that we have always had memories in (back when it was Pizza Hut.) This place is right up the street from the OU campus so it's definitely a Boomer Sooner spot, however, I was expecting more. Being a BBQ aficionado I expected it to better than what it was. The ribs are meaty and fall off the bone but there is no flavor or rub to them at all, and the same for the brisket. Coming from Denver, I would say this place is about average. Limited parking and small dining area but the food is good. It was crowded and the lines were long so I expected it to be absolutely amazing. Lots of OU fans around as well! when we got our food (brisket sandwiches) I put a good amount of sauce on it and it was good, meat wasn't dry at least. The staff were nice and the tables were cleaned, might be difficult to find seating on Saturday for lunch (that's when we went). Decent bbq joint. Came here with the family to eat lunch. The place was clean, bathrooms were clean, and the ordering process was smooth. My wife ordered the smoked sausage with mac & cheese and fried okra. I had the bbq pulled chicken and fries. My kid had my wife's mac & cheese, but didn't care for it. I tried it and I wasn't a fan, either. The smoked sausage was good. Nice flavor. I would have enjoyed it a bit spicier, but my wife liked it. The pulled chicken was good, although not spectacular. From the lady taking your order to the lady who fills the order to Darrol Ray himself who came out, shook my hand, and stood and talked to me. The order was filled in no time and we were blessed with the softest, tenderest, tastiest ribs I have had in longer than I can remember. Your choice of mild or hot sauce. (The hot will burn right through you hand - Woweee!) The baked beans were excellent. Not a heavy flavor, not an all day in a pot flavor, and not that too sweet flavor. They were just right! The ribs were baked to perfection, the pork was juicy, the brisket had a great combination of moistness and char. The green beans were worth a second helping. Walking into Ray's, I was bathed in sweet hickory smoke and once inside confronted with kitsch on the walls, plastic cutlery and frayed carpet. Hickory smoked meats can quickly become bitter, but my only complaint was just the opposite. Awesome. My husband is a smoke freak and when we got out of the car the awesome smoke smell filled the air, he said "that's a great sign". The lady at the counter was so nice and friendly, didn't seem to get inpatient or try to hurry my indecisive husband. We both went for the "local favorite" Ray's-the-roof Sandwich and were not disappointed. The brisket was nothing short of spectacular, it wasn't dry but crumbled and the hot links were so wonderful there aren't words that could describe it. He ordered a huge feast for many that was on the menu for $54.99 that included ribs, brisket, pulled pork, fried okra, mac & cheese, bread, etc. Ended up with him taking home leftovers as it was a FEAST of too much for us to finish. Very tasty food. Baby Back ribs stood out the most. Regular & HOT spicy BBQ sauces were hitting the mark. Deserves FOUR STARS for being great food at a great value. However I noticed what I presume was the owner walking around once in a while interacting with the customers. The food was ok. The pork ribs were a little over cooked, but perfect smokey balance.
