Tons of super cool/unique t-shirts giving props (or poking fun) at the Midwest or referencing current pop culture happenings. There's even a rack of misprint shirts that are super cheap and soft. I grabbed one for a casual lay around/sleep shirt. Raygun offers much more than just shirts. Hats, coasters, coffee mugs, posters and other home decor items abound. I'd say it's an ideal spot for finding gifts for your cool and uncool friends alike. Or picking up an item or two to spruce up your place. They totally should open up a location in Omaha! read more

I actually never knew what Raygun was about until the Yelp event and that was my first time coming here. The store is awesome, the design of the store, the products, and the staff all top notch. After learning about the items being all American made and the founder's philosophy about pleasing the consumer, I immediately loved the store! The shirts are very well designed with clever sayings on them. Apparently Raygun is gaining popularity all over the country and I am not surprised. Raygun is a super cool store. The products here are original and creative. I laughed after reading what was printed on a bunch of t-shirts. They have a ton of different t-shirts here, but dont be fooled--they didnt have all sizes. The lack of sizes was odd to me because their stock room behind the cashiers is completely visible with many folded t-shirts. It seems they make their t-shirts there so why not make t-shirts of the sizes that are selling out? I asked one of the employees if there were anymore medium sized shirts for a style I liked (in women's). The sales associate told me there were no more mediums but that I should try to look for a unisex shirt in that same style. Why would I want to wear a unisex baggy shirt when I could wear a woman's style shirt? Anyways, I ended up buying a different shirt, but was pretty bummed that the one I liked was pretty much sold out. They have women, men, children, and even dog clothing! Prices can be expensive or cheap depending on if there is a sale on it or not. Most t-shirts here are priced for $20. They also have a bunch of cute and funny post cards, notebooks, pins, magnets, and other knickknacks. There is a sign by the cashier that says all sales final, but according to the sales receipt they have a good exchange policy. The receipt says: "There is no time limit, no washing restrictions, no questions asked. If something doesnt fit when you first get it, or if something doesnt fit after you first wash it, or you're just a difficult son-of-a-gun and want your money back for what you bought, we'll exchange your shirt or return it for cash no matter what. But wait, there's more! We offer a lifetime guarantee on our t-shirts. So if months or years have gone by and your favorite RAYGUN shirt is starting to fade or lose its luster, just bring it back in and we'll give you a brand new one!" I'm not quite sure how they can keep up with the lifetime guarantee in replacing old t-shirts unless they plan to carry every style of t-shirt for the rest of the lifetime of the store. But since its on the receipt, I guess they have to do what they can to honor their customers! I havent tried their return policy yet so I'm not sure how customer friendly their return policy really is, but I'll update my review if/when I need to return something. read more

This is one of those quirky t-shirt shops but I love it. They say semi-inappropriate things on your shirt and make having things on your shirts cool again. With the new location they've really upped their game and have a sweet little shop with a side bar coffee bar run by Mars Cafe! This is a pretty sick little store! We wandered in while perusing downtown and loved the huge array of novelty shirts and books. Very reminiscent of urban outfitters, but smaller and you don't leave feeling a bit dirty. Shirts run around $20 a shot with tons of styles and plenty of attitude. Whether you're looking for a something to stick it to the man or just get a laugh, the shirts here give you plenty of options. Plenty of other ancillary items like Koozies, key chains, cards and even baby stuff so your little one can showcase your style! A solid place that's a lot of fun to walk around in for a bit and one where you'll more than likely find something that you'll either need or seriously consider buying. I ordered a T-shirt online and had it shipped to me because I don't live anywhere close to Des Moines. The shirt arrived with a mark on the back of it. This is a very hip and cool T-shirt store in the trendy East Village neighborhood of Des Moines. They're full of novelty items with original slogans and sayings on each shirt. Some may have inappropriate things on them and could be offensive to some people; but they are very funny and had us laughing in the aisles! All of the shirts are Midwest centered (most involving Iowa, of course) and poke fun at the region. Being a Midwesterner, I couldn't help but laugh at all of the pictures and wordings on the shirts (there were I didn't quite understand, but that's okay...they're designed for people actually from those states and I don't know everything about all Midwestern states). They also have mugs, glasses, and other accessories with the T-shirt slogans on them too. It's definitely worth the trip -- even if you don't buys something, you'll have a good laugh! read more

I was at the farmers market sometime last year and saw this great t shirt that said something like "I saw this t shirt on Pinterest"...I found it on Pinterest and low and behold it is from Raygun. He also is quite philanthropic as many of his designs are for non-profits and there is a portion of sales that are sent to them. It is located in the trendy east village. Go ahead, tempt fate. Handsome Boyfriend and I had never been here. Given the option, Handsome Boyfriend would throw himself on the busy sidewalk outside as he'd rather face just about anything other than shopping: Torture such as fleeing hungry rabid dragons, political talk radio debate between fat zombie politicians, a cable romantic comedy marathon with commercials... All that made clear, he liked it here and had a great time. This was a welcome surprise. I purchased a couple of Magnets (pictured) that reside in places of honor on our fridge, making loving fun of each of our home states. "Guns don't kill people. People from TEXAS kill people." Vs "IOWANS: The few, the proud, the extremely attractive." There's a lot to choose from catchphrase TShirts, tank tops, towels, mugs, pint glasses, shot glasses, stickers, posters, postcards all with funny quips on the MidWest. Truly could join in and try to one-up the accurate mockery but last time I did that? Yup, fate had the laugh as I wound up a Material Girl with an tall Handsome Iowa man like a hilarious modern reboot of Green Acres with a hyperactive beagle instead of a talking pig. This is a t shirt shop. It is the funniest Midwestern themed t shirt shop I've ever encountered. They have shirts like "I went to the Iowa State Fair and all I got was type 2 diabetes" and "Mt. Nasty" with a picture of Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama and RBG on it. The store and Facebook page are fairly liberal and free flowing with their political views, making new shirts with each ridiculous thing that happens on the news. But if their politics don't align with yours, don't worry! They have all kinds of shirts that poke fun at the Midwest and support cool Midwestern things. All in all, it's a fun shop in the east village and if you're there, I wouldn't pass it up. read more

I went to go check out and I was buying a pride pin, she picked up on the signals I was giving her, and she wrapped it up and made sure my mother who was with me, would not be able to see it. I've received a lot of Raygun items as gifts and have even ordered online once or twice, so I was excited to finally stop in for a visit on my recent trip to Des Moines. It was the weekend of Drake's and DMU's graduations as well as Celebrasian, so I'm not sure I had a totally normal shopping experience there. Parking was difficult (the baby and I hoofed it through the back alley), and I the only time I was acknowledged by staff was when I paid for my shirt (it was busy, but there were at least 8 people working and I should have at least been greeted). That said, it was a really fun shop to peruse! I immediately discovered the little niche for kids - if we'd had longer to spend there, we definitely would have explored that a bit more. There's a ton of stuff to see, so I'd recommend planning time for yourself to check everything out. Without having 30+ minutes to spend there, you just can't do all the product justice! I got my kiddo a Mt. Nasty shirt to match my own. It was $20, which is pricey for a kids' tee, but she loves pointing at Michelle and RBG. Worth it. If it had been less busy there and/or I hadn't had the baby along, I could have spent a lot more time and money! read more

My heart is pounding. My palms, clammy, but that's to no one's surprise. I'm looking over my shoulder frantically wondering if anyone will catch me browsing Raygunsite.com again. No one can know of my addiction. RAYGUN: I can't quit you, and I have no plans to any time soon. First, I probably don't LITERALLY need a Raygun intervention, but sometimes it feels like it. Anytime I shop online, I end up with a minimum of 10 shirts in my basket and have to narrow it down to the BEST shirts. I've never actually been to the store, so this isn't a review about this particular location, but more in general. Though, the notes I've received from this location and the Iowa City location were equally awesome and heart-warming (is that the right word?) Here's why I'm addicted to Raygun: 1. Amazing tshirts. It's probably embarrassing how many shirts I order for myself and my friends. My favorite shirt so far is the Yay Cleavage! shirt. 2. Great service. My orders always come in amazing time, and there are always very nice notes in sharpie on my order. I just think that's swell. 3. Holy comfortable shirts, batman. 4. GREAT FONTS. 5. General badassery. IOWA: Get skuzzy or die tryin'. Just sayin'. It's probably best that my love for Raygun turned into stage 5 clinger after I moved 1000 miles away. That's just how much I love them. Raygun makes some of the best Tshirts. Shirts like one with a cat with laser eyes that reads, "Mew! Mew! Mew!" instead of pew, pew, pew. Shirts that say "Des Moines, Iowa: Let us exceed your already low expectations." Shirts that say, "You've cat to be kitten me right meow." Okay, obviously I admire cats and cat humor, but whatever. The shirts are fantastic quality, the prices are reasonable, and they sell more than just shirts so there. But, they do sell shirts in men's, women's, and children's sizes. In fact I bought a tank top for Ephraim that I can't wait to bust out. It reads, "Suns out. Guns out." And I think that's hilarious. In short, if you are in Des Moines and like irony, hipstery, or Iowa you should buy yourself a Raygun shirt. The end. read more

Although I grew up in Iowa, I now reside in NYC, so I ordered a shirt ("California" for its typography and statement) from them on-line. I received it six days later and love the colors, quality, and softness. Best of all, someone hand-wrote a message on my invoice to wear my shirt with pride in NYC. Who takes the time to do that these days? If that doesn't make your glass eye fog up, I don't know what will. I was additionally immensely impressed with their customer service. I had an error with my billing address, so I had to send my card information twice; initially it seemed as though I had duplicate charges on my card, so I e-mailed Ray Gun to address this issue. Ten minutes later, I received a reply and instead of an automated response, my eyes were met with a typed message that felt friendly, personable, and conversational. Just unheard of! I sent a screen shot, and he sent one in return. Someone at Ray Gun give Ryan a raise for his promptness, attention to detail, and personality. ^_^ read more

After seeing my review raygun contacted me and let me know their return policy: "But as our return policy states, if your shirt shrinks or gets ruined somehow, you can always bring it in and exchange it for a new one" That's a great return policy for a clothing store. I'm still not a fan of American apparel tshirts. The shirts at raygun are to clever not to buy. Plus with the message they showed great customer service and that they aim to please! Why not 5 star I'm just still not a fan of American apparel. Any other time I won't buy shirts printed in them they seem not to fit guys with broader shoulders very well. I love Raygun's t-shirts with funny designs & slogans. They focus mostly on Iowa but also other Midwest states & cities, and Midwest pride in general. I have the Idawahio shirt & was just hinting to my fiance that the Cyclone-colored "I'm Taking My Talents to...Ames" would make a nice Hanukkah present. Some other ones that make me laugh are "Iowa University: Idaho City Ohio, The Quad Cities: Twice as Nice as the Twin Cities, Des Moines: French for The Moines and Iowa City: All Our Creativity Went into the Name." They update their designs based on current events, hence the shirts congratulating New York and California on finally being as gay as Iowa, and the "Nothing's Sexier than a Cornfield" Lady Gaga quote. The t-shirts are American Apparel, which have a nice fit & hold up well through repeated washings. They have women's shirts, which is nice since they're a little more figure flattering than normal t-shirts. I've never actually been to the East Village store but they have pretty much everything online. Raygun (or as one of their t-shirts put is, "The store formerly known as Smash until some A-holes in California made us change it") is the highlight of the East Village and if you haven't visited yet, you are truly missing out. This independently owned boutique creates original and irreverent t-shirts that manage to simultaneously celebrate and poke fun at Des Moines, at Iowa, and at the Midwest in general. Lately I've noticed more than just t-shirts for sale in the store as they are branching out into men's and women's shoes, accessories, and other clothing... I got some excellent rain boots here just last weekend. However, the t-shirts are the main reason why everyone visits. They are clever, well-priced, and printed on American Apparel Ts. Almost their entire selection is online at their website, but there are certain things you can only get in-store, like the test shirts (my personal favorite). I actually stumbled upon the Raygun website whilst randomly perusing mommy blogs one day and was excited to see that they had a Des Moines location. Their stuff is mainly American Apparel gear with original, cheeky designs. I love all the Midwest pride attitude. It almost makes me jealous that I'm not from the Midwest. I really wish they had a sister store that was all about the West Coast. I was hoping the store would have more offerings than the website does; however, it's roughly about the same. Their kids stuff is beyond adorable. I can't bring myself to pay $19 for a onesie though. Maybe I'll just stalk their website and hope the ones I like go on sale. I'm an Iowa native. My husband is an LA native. We live in Georgia. A bunch of his Left Coast friends are visiting us here in a few weeks so I decided to order some Iowa gear to to prepare for the invasion. I always feel so outnumbered. The t-shirts are reasonably priced, soft, and funny. Same for the koozies. Shipping for my whole order is less than 3 bucks. Unheard of.
