If you are a hoarder of antiques, west end architectural salvage is a place that has antiques galore for sale. I can see that the items that they sell are nostalgic for some. It is a cool place to see random antiques, but the prices of the items are way too expensive. I love that you can purchase drinks and take them all around while perusing the store, all 5 levels (4 above ground, 1 below ground).

I was in Des Moines on a quick weekend trip and wandered into this amazing gem! There is a coffee shop in the first floor and so many stories to explore.

This was a really fun visit and I am glad we stopped in during our weekend trip to Des Moines. There are multiple floors or every vintage, antique, weird, fun, and everything in between here. There is even a coffee shop (we did not get anything though). We really loved walking through here and seeing some old things that we've never came across at any vintage/antique store. You can tell that the person collecting all of this has put a ton of time and effort into bringing all of it into this building. My only complaint was the pricing on everything. In my opinion, and based on numerous other similar stores we've been to, everything was very marked up. Now, I understand most of it is valid and really is worth that, but some items were kind of outrageous. Overall, West End is a super cool store to visit and worth it even if you just window shop. I am sure we will come back and see what new stuff is here when we visit Des Moines again.

Four floors of antique furniture, signs, lights and much much more! Visited here on a Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed walking through the upper levels of the historic building to see different decor items. A lot of the items brought back memories and also made me feel nostalgic. Great finds if you're in for remodeling and finishing an older home back to original. Unfortunately, most of the items in the place are very expensive, and are much more than I'd be wanting to spend. It's a great place to spend a morning or afternoon, and don't forget to stop by the coffee shop for something to enjoy while you browse!

This is a pretty cool place. I thought it would be like the picker knows, but this is more furniture and stuff to refurbish an old house or building. there is lots of great stuff. some weird stuff as well. The problem here are the prices, everything is priced really high. we were looking for an old door for our rental, we found one that would work and wasn't $200, but realized the top corner was cut off. They like they're stuff, but people must be willing to pay for it. The building itself is cool. there's a coffee shop and bar on the first floor.

A wonderful gem in the city of Des Moines...It would be a gem in any major city for that matter! This old converted warehouse is filled with wonderful things huge and small and all unique. Pieces great for decorating and gifts or finishing touchs in restoring your home. You can spend hours working your way through all the nooks and crannies, so be prepared. Luckily there's a little cafe so you can take a break. Prices range from wow that's cheap to wow that's expensive but sooo cool. We spent money there and loved what we got and look forward to returning. Very nice owner and staff. Great store.

It's like walking into HGTV show in Des Moines, Iowa. If you're looking to buy some awesome pieces for your new digs or just want to wander through awesome stuff for the afternoon, this is the place. 4 floors of awesome home decor, from old metal gas station signs to funky patterned couches, West End has it all. Bottom/main floor has a cute little cafe and some kitschy handmade goods, like spoon rings and such. Each floor has a different theme (4th floor is all wood--doors, windows, slabs, etc.). Within each floor, they have organized it by room/style/color. So fun to sort through! I will say a lot of these pieces are pretty pricey, so it's not like going to a garage sale and finding gems for cheap. However, it does have high quality, unique items that can be the centerpiece of a room. They do have some awesome wedding items, like signs and decor! Great for light fixtures or furniture.

This place is always so fun to look through. The vintage Santa Clause was perfect for the season. My husband really enjoyed the old pictures of Des Moines and blue prints of an airplane we found. The history in the items just makes it all so amazing. There's also some not so old great things - like a giant Infinity car logo. If only they had other car logos! Will have to come back and see.

Just a tiny section, I'm sure you could visit three days in a row and notice multiple different items each time.

Four floors of inspiration and creativity. Curated curiosities in a warehouse of whimsical antiquity. Explore all the levels and find conversation starters while sipping a cabernet or coffee. These guys know what they're doing. The cubano latte is luscious and the men and women working here are extremely friendly. This place is a must go to, so bookmark it and then take action.

The Picker Knows is one of those places... Probably the premier, and my favorite, antique "mall" in the Des Moines metro! Rows and rows of vendor booth and cases. I'd hate to total the money up that I've spent here... And buying is great, but a lot of times I just have fun window shopping. Looking at the many different things here that I can't afford or have no business spending money on... Lol Very large display items, furniture, antiques, retro and vintage, some modern, a few clothes, comics, vinyls, Hot Wheels, some dusty and rusty things, handcrafted items, and tons of smalls! Prices are vendor driven. So some are high, some are at market, and there are great deals to be found here too. As a veteran I appreciate the veteran's only parking spot near the front door. At only 55 I pass it up a lot because there are veterans in A LOT worse shape than I am. But I have used it a couple of times. It's so easy to spend hours here! Vendors leave and new vendors fill their slots. And with the merchandise being vendor provided...the selection is ever changing! The staff is fantastic and always available for questions or to open a case! The bathrooms aren't terrible for this environment. They aren't perfect...pretty plain Jane...but they don't send you running for the hills. Lol The Picker Knows is a must stop in the Des Moines metro if you are into antiquing or thrifting!

I was here because my Nephew was getting married next door at the Decades Event Center. I believe that both spaces were once a Dahl's Grocery Store. Since I was early and the pictures I was in were taken, I had some time to wander about. I love looking around antique stores and this place certainly had a lot of space and individual "consignment" booths. In situations like this, my eyes glaze over as I keep walking. In my head is Gayle saying - "Where are you going to put this crap?". In my heart is the preference of finding some unique peace that I can convince myself that I can't do without. I finally purchased a cool heavy metal Iowa-themed belt buckle for $15. That was after my go-to shopping targets of knives, pens, and old publications came up empty. I also find that I'm good for about 30 minutes in an antique store, and them I have to get out. If there's a next time, I'm sure inventory will be different, so who knows what might appear!

Both times I was here I noticed buckets catching water through the roof. So the building is a little in shambles, but the stuff in it.... rules! I drive buy this building every day bringing my kid to school, so I noticed this sweet mid century modern lamp in the window that would match my "Fake" mid century modern couches.. So I had to go and check it out.. Mind you when I saw the price tag, 600 bucks.. and the sweet owner told me it was from the early 60's and made in Italy I understood that this lamp does not belong next to my two fake mid century modern couches that were purchased for under the price of that lamp! But hey I kept shopping and found tons of other treasures that I would love to have but also couldn't afford.. But you got to look everywhere here! I did end up finding a really cool Minnesota Twins button from the 1960's that I will give to my dad for Christmas.. and hey it was only 5 bucks! I wish I could buy that 600 dollar lamp, and the very sweet owner could fix his roof.. The store is also only open on weekends or by appointment.. So go check it out.. There is bound to be a treasure in there for you! Or if you want to buy me a 600 dollar Christmas Present I will take that orange lamp in the window..

The store itself was really neat to walk through, and they had fantastic restrooms! However, the people there were not very friendly. I smiled at one girl who worked there, and she just stared straight through me as she walked by me. Then, there was a guy and another woman, with only the woman briefly saying anything at all to us. They did have a nice selection of odds and ends, with lots of tins, old kitchen utensils, pots, pans. It was an okay stop for the morning, but wish those working there had been a bit friendlier. There is apparently free parking somewhere, but we had already paid at a meter before seeing the sign inside regarding this. I enjoy antique stores, especially the ones that have some curation and don't make me feel like I'm drinking out of a fire hose when looking around. This store is nicely laid out, easy to navigate, and features various individually owned (?) and themed bays (like books or tools). I also appreciated that I was pretty much on my own, unless I needed to ask for help or advice. So what did I buy? Let's just say that Gayle has already asked about it, rolled her eyes, and restated that we didn't need any more "junk" in the house. These places never reveal their true breadth in one visit, so I will be back the next time I'm in town. When you decide to come, please also note the historical building and its freight company heritage.
