The MOTHERSHIP of Raygun stores! They have graphic tees, stickers, coasters, pins, EVERYTHING! And the vast majority of it is all printed and designed by them! I was in typography heaven here! There is truly no end to Raygun's creativity and hilarity when it comes to their graphic designs and this store offered two whole floors of goodies to browse - with their second floor being more vintage clothing racks with Raygun graphics stamped onto them! I came away dropping a shockingly large amount of money, which will always be a hard pill to swallow, but feels less bad when it's towards an awesome company like this and when many of the items I purchased were gifts for other people! So I can confidently say that Raygun is a magical place that is PERFECT for finding gifts for a ton of people in your life! This Iowa-based company is absolutely delightful! Everything you find here is going to be unique and wonderful and this is just the exact kind of company I love supporting! They are so bold and out here with their products and if you've got any halfway decent sense of humor, you are sure to find a ton of goodies here to appreciate and purchase! This store encapsulates the Midwesterner state of mind perfectly and I just absolutely love it! My only request to Raygun is for some more representation of other states in the Midwest! As an Iowa-based company, I obviously see and understand the overwhelming majority of Iowa-related products, but I've also seen some Kansas and Ohio merch as well and at this Des Moines store, I did see as one row of Michigan-related products and as a Michigander, I would really love some more Michigan representation! Man, what a cool freaking store! We stopped in here on our last day of our weekend trip to Des Moines and loved shopping around the store. We ended up with a a few Christmas presents (coozies, magnets) and grabbed one of their mystery bags! The mystery bag had two shirts, and some other fun goodies for a really great price. The store has a ton of shirts, stickers, magnets, coozies, stationary, and everything else you can think of. They have one of the bigger selections I've seen of specifically targeted merchandise: shirts for librarians, San Francisco 49ers fans, and even Kansas City stuff! I was in town with a group of other journalists for the Steak Fry. I was told SEVERAL times Raygun is a must see before leaving Des Moines. And all those people were right. It's not your typical corny cheap crappy souvenir shop. There's something for everyone pretty much. T-shirts, candles, books, magnets, post cards, greeting cards, cups, mugs etc. Most are slapped with a funny midwest reference (I'm from Florida. Most went over my head.), others with a snarky, smart assy comment or others pertaining to this country's democracy in some way or another. I can't quite explain this place. This is my second time here. First time, years ago, this place was a pretty cool quirky fun shop that had funny, cool, and interesting items to choose from. This time however, was a disappointment. This shop has became way to political and biased with some pretty disturbing and disgusting merchandise. Keep your politics and opinions to yourself. No one cares about your political agenda and your bizarre beliefs. I, (and others) come there for cool merchandise, not your political ideology. If we wanted your opinion, we'd stand outside and ask for it. Guaranteed, your sales would go back up if you'd keep that crap to yourself. Raygun sells "one-of-a-kind apparel", unique gifts and home decor decorated with witty sayings about Des Moines, Iowa, the Midwest and highly opinionated political statements. They market their products online and in several stores, but their store is what most people are familiar with. If you are visiting here from out of town, I would definitely recommend stopping in since it's a great place to buy a gift or a keepsake. If you don't live here and haven't been bombarded with their email blasts, then what you'll find will definitely be unique and a fun way to spend 30-minutes. The quality of their apparel is average to below average. It's definitely "tourist grade" and a little over priced for what it is. Definitely what I would consider "fast fashion" vs REI or Duluth Trading Company type fabrics. I've purchased a number of shirts over the years and they were not made from the most durable materials and two of our kitchen towels are already frayed on the edges. They sell plenty of magnets, drinking glasses, coasters, posters, chef aprons, etc where quality is less of an issue. It's all perfect for gift giving or for souvenirs though. There are tons of items that are around $20 - 30. Bottom line, it's definitely worth 30-minutes if you are shopping for a unique gift, keepsake from Iowa, or to find something for someone who is really into American (left leaning) politics - particularly if you are from out of town. The staff isn't overly friendly, and parking is a pain in the butt (street parking only), but it's in the east village and there are plenty of other shops nearby that are also worth seeing. read more

We stumbled on Raygun over a year ago while attending a friends wedding from out of town. Came back in town yesterday and had to make a special stop. Absolutely love this store. Every item is perfectly cheeky and belly laugh worthy. Be prepared to shout your S.O. name across the store every 2 minutes when you wanna share something funny, we learned from our last visit and walked through together this time. My favorite things - the koozie wall and the kids play area. Husband also appreciated the coffee bar. This store is a Midwesterners wet dream. I am from the South but this place cracks me up as my husband is from Omaha. #DoYouEvenOpe ... I've never related to a store so much as this one. I so wish we had a location in Nebraska! Raygun is packed full of Midwest pride, onsite screen printed clothing & posters, local art, and quirky knick-knacks galore. If there's a T-shirt you want, but not the size you want is not available, they'll offer to print it for you! It may take a day or so, but that's service for you. A must-stop-by store in Des Moines! I have family that has given me gifts/t-shirts from Raygun ordered online and sent to me, but I had never been to one of their stores. It was a great experience and super fun! The store is also connected to a coffee bar, which was a great pit stop in the process of shopping! I loved browsing all their shirts and knick-nacs with funny Midwest and political slogans. My two-year old nephew also came with me, and he even got something because they have a pretty big children's section with great options! I really do not like souvenirs. Unfunny, kitschy, Made in China crappola is not my thing. Raygun IS NOT THAT. What Raygun has to offer is clever, original, hilarious, good quality stuff that feels less "souvenir," and more "I didn't find it, IT found ME." Whether you are looking for a gift for someone who doesn't live in Iowa or the Midwest, or you are a Native (or Captive!) shopping for yourself, Raygun has something for everyone. The one exception is that it does not appear to cater to the conservative crowd. Most of what I consider to be the best stuff is very liberal. If you're easily offended, you COULD STILL find something you'd like here, but you should probably go somewhere else. Mt. Nasty shirt anyone? Anyone? Bueller? My personal favorite is their book that highlights and illustrates all of the "things that have been overheard in Raygun." It is all completely out-of-context, solid gold entertainment. While my dad was visiting, he was stoked to purchase a shirt that said, "Des Moines - Far exceeding your already low expectations." Coincidentally, just the day prior to the find, he had struck up a conversation with a lady who was taking about Des Moine's surge in growth over the last several years. My dad replied that he didn't really know what to expect, but that Des Moines was really impressing him and totally surpassed what little he had imagined it might offer. read more

Besides only selling reddit tier items that have been in need of a style update since 2009, I was asked to wear a mask while shopping here despite being fully vaccinated. I find this ridiculous. I saw a woman leaving the store without a mask on so it is apparently selectively enforced. I like looking in here but I walked out and left after I was asked to do this. How are we ever supposed to return to normal if you're still enforcing a mask policy on fully vaccinated customers? I would have happily shown my vaccine card that I carry in my wallet, but no, these people are control freaks and I don't regret walking out and leaving. I have so much love for Raygun. I make my sister pick things up for me when she passes through Des Moines, but I finally had the chance to stop into the store myself recently. I could have spent an hour looking at all of the funny and useful things there. I appreciate their sarcastic sense of humor and their off-the-charts love of the midwest. (Dear Raygun: please make more designs for your Minnesotan neighbors!) I have shirts, pint glasses, and other sundries from Raygun, and they are all of very good quality. The shirts and glasses have held up well with repeated washings. If you're ordering online, be advised that the women's shirts run small. I have been a fan of Raygun for YEARS during my residence in dsm, and during a recent return visit I was sooo happy to see the store expansion and relocation! The shirts themselves are made from American Apparel in LA, the signature screen printed designs are entirely Raygun. The quick-whipped statements are sooo entertaining and totally rep midwestern pride. The store carries a variety of wearable goods for all ages, including a handful of options for your furry friends. They also carry random knick knacks and gift items, and shades, like wayfarers. Move over Rayban, Hello Raygun! Haha! My fiance returned to the store on his own without me and purchased a "Dont Meth With Iowa" shirt, and while I hate the connotation, I have to admit that he has received tons of compliments from the midwest to the west coast, so I guess he chose well! read more
