This is a review of the food, not the ambience or lack of silverware or place settings. We ordered a mixed salad which included tomatoes, avocados, green papaya, cabbage, cucumber and peanuts. The salad dressing was good and the salad was crisp. In addition we had the pad Thai and the chicken pumpkin curry with brown rice medium spiced. I could have had it a bit more spicy. The rice was cooked perfectly. The key point is that I would not hesitate to return as the flavor was very good. read more

Ratana's became our go to place for a healthy, quick and tasty meal in our one week stay in Hilo. The prices are very reasonable and Ratana makes every order to your liking as far as heat and spices. All the portions are large and just about perfect for a hungry traveler. The Pad Thai dish is probably the most filling and you must try the Mango dessert but be prepared to share as it is probably too much for just one person. Most other restaurants don't open for dinner until 5pm but Ratana's is open all day and perfect for an early dinner. read more

We were craving some Thai food, and stopped here on our way back to the airport. SO SO GOOD! We're kinda picky with our Thai food after visiting Thailand and this place did not disappoint. The green curry had the perfect spice ( we got medium) with perfect ratio of veggies and meat..the flavor was delicious. The papaya salad was also amazing. We finished lunch with some mango and sticky rice, and that was amazing too! How is everything so good!?! We decided we needed to order some food for dinner for our flight home :) Everything is made fresh and you can taste it. If we're ever in Hilo again we will definitely be back! The food is cheap and so good!! My friend and I went there for lunch on one of the rare days that I actually have freetime. Food was ready in a few minutes and it was delicious. The papaya salad and the pumpkin curry were both to die for. I dipped into my friends food and had a sample of their green curry and summer rolls and was definitely not let down. They accept custom orders on how you want your curry. I asked for less veggies and more sauce and they completely accommodated me. Sometimes the beef is a little chewy but the sauce is so good you dont really care. I always get the panang. They arent the best I ever had but they are the most unique. I eat here about twice per week. They are fast, high quality and consistent. They use local veggies and perfectly ripe avocado. The rice is nutty with a nice whole grain texture. Ratana's has become my Saturday morning farmers market ritual. She's located in the food vendor section of the Hilo Farmers Market every wednesday and saturday and Sundays she is at the pahoa farmers market. She serves the best papaya salad in town, and possibly the island. My favorites are the papaya salad with avocado, avocado summer rolls, and fried taro spring rolls. SO GOOD! She recently started offering curries and some other items as well, like fresh made juices, sticky rice, etc. Try it, you will not be disappointed! p.s. This lady is authentic, so her heat scale is skewed towards Thai tastebuds, meaning DO NOT ORDER SPICY unless you want an inferno in and around your mouth. We've been coming to Ratana's ever since she had her food truck at the farmers market. We are so stoked she was able to grow into a permanent location and we don't have to wait until saturdays to see her at the market. We eat here at least once a week. Her papaya salad with avocado is the best in town and very reasonably priced. We usually get the pad Thai and green curry too, all are very tasty and under $10. Perfect for vegans and vegetarians too. She is a very sweet woman too, always happy to see us and I've never seen her get upset at anyone. A little on the spicy side but it spicy is your thing you've come to the right place...but dont sorry if spicy is not your bag, you can order your food mild and it's quite flavorful and definitely delicious. My favorite is the Pineapple Fried rice. It has brown fried rice, cashews pineapple, zucchini, carrots, dates, chicken and shrimp and a few other goodies...its amazing!! it is very crowded in there cuz they're only two tables to sit and they have a microwave running nonstop microwaves are highly dangerous the radiation is off the chart I don't want to be subject to non stop radiation while I'm trying to eat my meal I also don't want to destroy all the nutrient contents of my food with a microwave so I didn't find this out until I started eating and then I was very anxious the whole time I was eating because I had a baby and a toddler in the restaurant with me and I did not want all that radiation exposure to our family I do not believe that any restaurant should use a microwave read more
