I'm very surprised that I'm the first to review this place on Yelp. The food, service and atmosphere were excellent and by far one of the best Indian meals I've ever eaten. Whilst the majority of us have our favourite dishes, I was gently swayed by the waiter to try an alternative variation on my favourite dish - lamb saag. The dish was perfect, a perfect blend of tastes, spices and tastes incredible. I want to say it was called Lamb Sagotti but I might be wrong. Everyone agreed it was a terrific meal and if we ever found ourselves back in Claygate, we would certainly return.

So it was nice to see some unique dishes on the specialities section of the menu. We chose the chicken dhakeshwari, which was a mild dish garnished with mango and almond. It was like a pasanda but the mango added a nice fruity note to the sauce. Our other main dish was the chicken chettinad, which included roasted coconut and mixed Indian seeds in a hot sauce. The coconut added a nutty flavour and the heat of the chettinad made a nice contrast to the dhakeshwari I enjoyed the distinctive flavours in the main dishes and the accompaniments - papadums, mango lassi, naan and pilau rice - were all delicious Service was friendly and efficient. We will be back to try more dishes on the specialities list

We started with the papadam with chutney assortment. There was plenty of everything in the assortment, and the papadaum was fresh and crispy. When it came time to order, everything sounded so delicious, and I was amused at how things seemed to be spelled slighlty differently than in the US. I decided on Lamb tikka masala, while Jimmy got the Chicken Korai spicy. We also got rice and naan for each of us. The food was delicious. The sauces were rich and flavorful. The meat was tender, not dry. The naan was slightly crunchy on the bottom and fluffy on top, just the way I love it. The portions were generous. We definitely could have been full from half as much food. Service was great, making sure that our water glasses were filled (perhaps they were worried about Jimmy ordering spicy food) and always checking that we had everything we needed.

So we did some research. Somewhere along the line we found Meraz written up as one of the 12 best Indian restaurants in England. Okay, so we trek over to the East End (pretty wild neighborhood that we enjoyed) for dinner at Meraz. My husband was disappointed not to find a particular dish on the menu, but the waiter didn't hesitate to offer to have the kitchen whip it up special for him. My husband also went a little wild ordering all sorts of appetizers and side dishes. Now I don't like to deal in hyperbole. A five star rating should be sufficient praise. I've eaten in Indian restaurants at home in Chicago, in L.A., New York, St.Louis, Atlanta, San Francisco, etc., etc. etc. Many have been good, but none approached this. We ate every scrap of all the food we ordered, and only because we had a tight timeline and a busy itinerary for our brief visit to London did we not go back for at least a second meal.
