I received several responses with quotes, and Desert Water Plumbing and Rooter was the first company to reach out. I contacted them around 5 PM on Wednesday, and they were able to schedule a free estimate for Friday. Dan Burke showed up right on time. He was professional, efficient, and easy to talk to. Like the other companies I spoke with, he recommended repiping as the best solution for the long run. He gave me an estimate for the project and also mentioned that if the office couldn't schedule the repair on Monday, he could stop by to do a quick temporary fix to stop the leak and then come back when they could finish the job. I really appreciated that because I don't like wasting water. The price Dan quoted was also very reasonable compared to the other companies. After thinking it over, I decided to go with Desert Water Plumbing and Rooter and called the office to schedule the appointment. They weren't able to do the repipe on Monday but scheduled it for Tuesday. Dan did come by on Monday to help temporarily stop the leak. Then he and his team came back Tuesday morning and started the project. Everything went smoothly. My house now has a new pipe, no more leaking, and it feels great knowing the issue is fixed. While…read morethe cause of my leak seems to be resolved (at least for now) it did bother me that I took the time to ask several times with the dispatcher "Taneea"(sp) and she said there was no fee to diagnose and I kept asking are you sure because in order to see where the leak is coming from my bathroom upstairs from the shower and where it settling we need to look at the pipes underneath where the drywall is and that involves cutting the ceiling drywall. And I asked her again several times if there's any charge for leak tracing or anything she was leaving out just to look and see before repairing and she said no, there's no diagnostic charge. They get here and tell me it's gonna be $125 just to cut the drywall and I just don't understand how there can be such a disparity between what I verified by phone and what I was being told now. And even if I give them the benefit of the doubt that the dispatcher was mistaken (though that's something very strange for a dispatcher who works for and represents a company to say, if not true) the fact that she did tell me that clearly, you would think to keep a customer they would stand by their own word, so not a great first impression. I still paid them $455 to change the cartridge in my shower, but they would not take five or ten minutes to cut up two 6"x6" holes in the drywall and look inside to see if there's any other extensive damage or leaking. I may just leave it for now and keep an eye for any signs of staining or moisture rather than deal with drywall repair. I still will inspect around the electrical where the ceiling fan canopy is and remove it from the ceiling to see if there's any water damage to the fan and light fixture or if it can be salvaged and still works once all is dry and I can restore power to the room. But they refused to look for any signs below to ensure there were no other signs of a leak unless I paid more. Another thing is with a large hole behind the shower faucet escutcheon where the leak occurred what's to keep another cartridge from failing and leaking right down into the room below and getting into the electrical and drywall and ruining another ceiling fan? I wish they'd have taken the time to tell me how to seal off that wall behind the faucet handle or given me suggestions but they just kind of did their job and left. They didn't offer me any advice or tips to prevent this again or set my mind at ease, and taking the time to do that would have made me feel more "taken care of" and built a rapport as a new customer. They just wanted to do the job I asked and go. So while I have no other complaints so far, they didn't go the extra mile or make me feel reassured at all for such a serious issue. It was just a "job" to cross of their list and not spend a second longer than necessary to show, discuss or reassure.

Full timeline: My AC stopped cooling, so I called Forrest Anderson, a company I've used for the past four years for regular service and check ups. They said a technician could come out after 5:00 PM, but that after-hours service would be time-and-a-half--$150 instead of the normal $100 service call. I was also told parts might cost slightly more. I agreed, with the understanding that we would discuss pricing once the issue was diagnosed. The technician arrived and called me about 10 minutes later (could see him on the security cameras), saying the issue was a failed dual run capacitor and that he had the part in his truck. Before authorizing the repair, I asked multiple times what the total cost would be for parts AND Labor. The first response was that "the computer isn't working," so he couldn't look it up yet. I asked again, when he called back 5 minutes later,and he said the total would be $734. When I pressed for a breakdown of parts and labor, he said he'd have to get back to me. Based on the price, I assumed this must be an expensive part or a labor-intensive repair. I was out to dinner and couldn't look it up. The technician completed the repair in about 10 more minutes and left shortly after--roughly 20 minutes total on-site. I saw them come and go with the cameras on my house, sharing updates with the technician coming and going. Afterward, when I could look up the part, I discovered the same dual run capacitor costs about $20 on Amazon, and even less from a local parts supplier. At that point, it became clear that I was charged about $500 dollars for a minimal labor job and a very inexpensive part.
