The best Burgers in Maine. I make it my priority to eat at Rapid Rays as often as possible when I visit Maine. They make the best burger I have ever had. Fresh meat, not sloppy not greasy. Ask for it "Loaded" which basically means Mustard, diced onions, relish and a tomato slice. I will go through 3 or 4 of these myself. Which isn't too hard the burgers aren't behemoth beef monstrosities like you get at Chilis or Applebees they're normal sized burgers that rely more on TASTE than weight. Rapid Rays is mostly take out, there isn't anywhere to sit, but you could always sit in your car. They also make fantastic crab cakes, hotdogs and other grill style favorites. *Ordering tip* When you go up to the window please tell them how many burgers you want 1st and when they're cooked then tell them how you want them topped. Don't just go up and ask for 7 cheese burgers with onions and relish. The correct protocol would be to ask for 7 cheese burgers or 7 hams, THEN when they're done let the preparer know how you want them done. I would suggest getting them loaded though that seems to be the famous style. Rapid Rays has been family owned and operated since the 60s or 70s, and when you go in to order you'll see all the old black and white photographs on the wall which really gives you a sense of time and how long Rapids has been an anchor in Saco Maine. This place is awesome! I grew up going to this place with my Grandfather, plus the food is great and it does not cost you to much, I think the most expensive thing on the menu is the "Big One" but that's about $3.75-$4.10! Food was OK. More of an experience. This was on my 5 things to do last summer. I'm glad I did but don't think I need to run back anytime soon. I went in a couple of days after the 4th of July at about 12:00 in the afternoon with my 9 year old son. We were the only young (and I'm 42) people there at that time. Mostly older men throwing back multiple burgers before heading back to work. I got a burger and my son had a hotdog and chocolate milk. I think my son said it best when he said it was like good cafeteria food. There's no seating, well a couple of benches on the street but it was such a hot day we ate off the half counters that run along the exterior walls. I bet this would be a fun late night stop after a bar crawl, but for me I could get the same thing at anyone of the fast food places a little down the road for half the price. read more

When I moved to the area, I was really excited about Rapid Ray's. A local favorite, a kitschy building, late hours, HOT DOGS...all sounded very promising. I am sorry to say that the hot dogs are nothing special. Just plain old boiled hot dogs. And the buns are not toasted (maybe you can request them to be?). I tried a chili dog, in the hopes that it would redeem an otherwise underwhelming experience. But nope. I really want to like Ray's, and appreciate their late hours and low prices. Whenever my family goes on Vacation to OOB we always make a it a point during the week to stop in at Rapid Rays. It's fast food done the way it was done before Drive thru chains took over. The food is great. Small menu. You cannot go wrong a cheeseburger. The hotdogs are great too. Fries are meh but still decent enough. We show up at 11:20 pm on a FRIDAY night to the doors of this establishment of known for being open late nights for us latenighters CLOSED. Two people left finishing there meals and locked doors with signs up. Confused as to why you're closing so early on a busy night of the week. No sit down here unless it's a couple of benchs, one with a view of Main Street and the other looking at Pepperell Square. But the burgers and dogs have been consistently at the top of my list. Some reviews on here are complaining about the staff being short with them. That is the whole point! You know what you want, you place your order quickly and in a strong voice, you get it fast and move along! Think of it as a Soup-Naziesque dining experience that allows them to keep things cheap and good and get you your food hot and fast. To like this little slice of Americana, I think you have to be either a Saco townie or a drunk Thornton Academy boarder. The principle sounds nostalgic and fun: Paleo-fast food from the "good ole days" before McDonald's & Burger King. Well, this place informs you that the "fast food" of the time could be just as wretched as the burgers and fries that are served to this day on the ugly Rte. 1 strip which informs most people's opinion of Saco ME. I think my stomach spent the better part of a day recovering from the rancid fat that this joint cooks with. And I just don't fall into the flaccid steamed hot dog camp. Great food but some of the staff can be rude. If they don't want people paying with a card, then don't accept them. Or put a sign out saying there is a minimum dollar amount maybe. But there's no need to make snarky comments about someone "financing" their meal. Debit and credit cards are way more common than cash these days. read more
