This is literally--literally!--the only thing I miss about living in Silver Spring. Every single person who has ever touched my hair there is great at what they do, and the prices are A-okay. I've gotten a clean, precise cut every time. I've personally had to wait maybe twice out of twelve times and it's never been a problem. They know what they're doing!!! I am done with Hair Cuttery, salons, and generally every other barber shop in town. Raphael's has knowledgeable staff that actually know how to cut men's hair. Before coming here, I was often given awful haircuts by people who acted like it was their first time picking up a set of clippers. Sonny gives me a quick haircut that looks great everytime. I don't trust my dew to just any barber around town. So when my friend Juan told me about Anna's legendary cuttability I was still a little skeptical. After I sat down and started watching her dedication and focus on the hair on my head, I was in awe. It was almost like she cut each strand individually, to its perfect length. I'm pretty particular about my hair cuts and Raphael's doesn't disappoint. The haircuts are always on point and reasonably priced at $20 which to me is pretty cheap since I was paying $40 in NYC before I moved to the DC area. I recommend going on off hours because right after work there is usually a wait, up to 45 minutes or so depending on whether or not you are waiting for a particular barber (there is usually only a 5-10 minute wait if you don't mind seeing any barber since there is usually about 3-4 working at any given time of day). I don't mind the wait though because I'd rather wait an hour than walk around looking like a jokester with a whack haircut for two weeks by going somewhere else. Personally I go to Sonny or Anna who really take their time and make sure you are happy before you leave their chair. There is always parking pretty close by with metered spots right in front and a garage the next block up, they accept credit cards, and you will walk out looking fresh! Highly recommend. I'm on Georgia Ave looking for 8720. I haven't had a haircut in many months. My attempt to "grow it out" has failed utterly. In my hand, a couple photos from the web suggest a pretty specific look. Ebrahaim is friendly without trying to fill every spare moment with pointless prattle, patient with his sizable task (I specifically arrive on a weekday at 2:30 so I know they will not be busy), and very good. I recently sat with him for a quick haircut before heading out of town when my main guy was on vacation and he may be my new go-to guy. I walked in and there maybe 6 people ahead of me and only 4 barbers but they insisted on the wait only being 20minutes and they were right ebrahim cut my hair in maybe 15 minutes but he is great quick but good with the details. I can only attribute it to experience. They now have great barbers. Every person that got up before me got me more excited. The only thing I would suggest is the mentioned not working by appointment and when you walk in they don't have a system for checking in to keep order of who came in first. In my opinion, this is as good as it gets for a barber shop. Consistent, quick haircuts. My hair comes out looking good and professional. It is a better haircut than I have the right to expect for $20. I take my 10 year-old son there. They treat him great, and cut his hair just the way he likes it (think, mid-80s Liverpool soccer hooligan...but that is what he wants). Qualifiers: This is not Vidal Sassoon in Tyson's. It is not a salon. I don't bring my daughter here for haircuts. I used to pay $80 to get my hair cut near Capitol Hill. There they brought me tea while I waited, or cold seltzer with a lime wedge in it. At Raphael's nobody brings me tea or seltzer. But the haircut is every bit as good as the $80 cut. read more

I will NEVER get a haircut as good as the ones I get here ANYWHERE back home in Los Angeles (allow me this one time to be over the top). Firstly, try out every barber and/or talk to them to see who can work best with you. This is KEY to making sure you get the freshest cut. Each individual barber has their own unique style/strengths - although they all can cut equally well. I personally like to work with Sunny. This guy can go from giving you the freshest line up you will ever get to making you look straight GQ dapper - whatever look you're trying to get across. They're not as busy on the weekdays but the weekends can become a wait. Do not fear! Not only are they all skilled here, but they're EFFICIENT, so don't expect to be waiting too long. Reasonably priced as well. TL;DR - Easily one of the best (and affordable) places in Silver Spring to get your hair cuts/styled. read more

This was worth the drive! Wasn't sure, initially, if I wanted to get my haircut there but I figured why not. The wait was decent (not 5 minutes but not even half an hour either.) The Russian lady took me at first. I had kind of worried because I doubted she would do a good job at giving me the kind of cut I wanted (skin fade) Turns out I was right, but she let me know from the get go and passed me to another barber. The guy was friendly enough and he did a nice job of cutting my hair. The best part about this place was the message chair. I had an awful pinched nerve on my back from my commute to work in DC, and was real grateful that they had a message chair (bonus!) I plan on coming back. This place is a little pricey ($20), but there just aren't many choices for the type of haircut I need in this area. I gave my barber a standard tip and the Russian lady at nominal tip as a gesture of thanks for not experimenting with me. It really is a good place. None of this call for an appointment nonsense like the other place I reviewed. read more

This was my favorite barber before I moved away from DC, and it is again since I moved back. Tamara and Ebrahim have been there the longest, but they hired 2 or 3 more chairs in the past few years and everyone is able to give me the haircut I need. They are all quick but attentive. Parking right there on Georgia is a bit tough but just turn onto any cross street within 2 blocks and you will find something. read more

Bad service. As an African American male no barber will take you they will only send you to sunny. It was so apparent when I was next in line and the only person waiting for a haircut one of the barbers decided to come sit next to me and wait for the next Person (non black) to show up. There is no disputing this I recorded the entire thing and left. EMPLOY BARBERS WHO CAN CUT A DIVERSE RANGE. This is borderline racism basically you only cater to your white clients. read more

Pretty good and reasonably priced barber shop in downtown Silver Spring. The first few times I went I tried a few different barbers and for awhile I wasn't really thrilled with the quality but it was right next to my apartment and relatively cheap, so I couldn't complain too much. When I started getting my hair cut by Anna on a regular basis, this became my go to barbershop even after moving away from DTSS due to Anna's amazing attention to detail and quality haircuts. Sadly, it seems Anna is no longer with this barber shop so I really have no reason to go out of my way to come here anymore, otherwise if I still lived in Silver Spring, I'd likely still stop in. There are several barbers in rotation here so if you don't like the particular style of one, it's worth giving another a shot. read more

This is a true gem in my eyes! Clean, curtious, friendly, skilled, and well staffed! It's almost impossible to find a great haircut for under $20 these days, yet it's $18 at Raphael's. Jalal is my favorite barber. He's got a gift in his skill, always cutting/styling my hair the way I like it, each and every time. He even gives the old fashion warm shaving cream and straight razor cleanup to my nape and sideburns, so relaxing and so clean looking afterwards! He and all the staff are very friendly, and always carry a great conversation. No hour long waits, or waiting a week for an appointment. This isn't some silly hipster/posh salon with ridiculous decor, espressos, and silly add-on services costing you $60 every time you go in. This is an amazing haircut and style in a very clean neighborhood style barber shop. You couldn't pay me to go anywhere else. read more

Thank goodness for yelp. This is my first time going to this place to get my eyebrows threaded (on a Monday nonetheless! Most salons are not usually open on Mondays). Based on the previous post, I decided to give this place a go. I am so happy with my choice. I called first to make sure I was going to the right place. It is within a barber shop so I just wanted to double check. Jalal was extremely curteous and professional on the phone. When I arrived, I was directed to sit in the chair, and Jalal proceeded to ask me how I want my eyebrows done. I am eyebrow fanatic, and I can be very particular. He was very meticulous and careful while threading and showed me the first eyebrow he did to make sure it was the way I liked. Not too thin, natural shape, sharp, and clean. I was very pleased. Overall, it was a good experience, and for $8 in this area, you cannot ask for anything better. read more

Was a bit apprehensive getting a haircut from an "Apprentice," but my boy Jalal really listened to what I wanted - a complicated box fade cut - took his time, and had me walkin out all cleaned up, and satisfied! These people are very good at what they do. If you want a standard businessman haircut that looks exactly the same every time, this is the perfect place. No chit-chat, you just sit down, get your perfect standard haircut, pay and leave. If you are looking for any creativity, look someplace else. This place is like McDonald's (no offense). You wouldn't go into McDonald's asking about some creative food combination they might be able to put together for you. However, if you like a Big Mac and want a Big Mac every time you go there, McDonald's makes Big Macs perfect and exactly the same every time. Same at Raphael's with businessman haircuts. read more

There's never too long of a wait, just sign in if it's busy and they'll get to you quickly. I appreciate the neck shave with a straight razor, and it's $20 for a cut, which is more expensive than a chain, barbershop, but still reasonable for my once every 6 weeks hairstyle. read more

Can I give ZERO stars? Oh man, stay away. I went here for a simple cut. Got a hack job. I showed a picture of myself with my desired cut, plus explained where the "puffy" trouble spots are, and that my current head had 9 weeks growth. I could not have be more clear. My haircut was awful! Nothing like my photo or my expectations. It was much too short in front (the one part I'm picky about, and which I explained repeatedly). Poofy in back (I was also explicit about this). Everything is lopsided & out of balance. A couple specific issues that I must complain about, because they're inexcusable: First, the barber's scissors were very dull. I'm no expert, but even a lay-person could tell. They made that sound dull scissors make when you're cutting through 30 sheets of paper, and he had to muscle through each cut. Worse, the handles were very rusty (gross! can you believe that?) and so you can just imagine the blades! Second, he hacked & hacked away. The worst finesse of any barber I've experienced in 40 years! Third, my neck literally burns from his clipper blades (I didn't know this was even possible!) -- because he pushed very aggressively, probably also because they were dull. Fourth, he spoke very little English, which is totally okay of course, EXCEPT that it quickly became clear that he also did not understand my instructions and could not explain back to me correctly. As a service provider, understanding & following instruction are table stakes. You can't do this job if you can't communicate with your customer. Fifth, he kept using the blow dryer excessively. I've never sent this before. He uses the blow dryer more than the scissors! His colleague at next chair actually had to tell him to stop blow drying because it was making my hair too puffy (which it definitely was, and which I had to continuously tell him). His solution to my puffy hair was to keep cutting shorter, which left my bangs much too short in front and still much too long in back. Lastly, his station was filthy -- dirty brushes & combs, rusty scissors, hair everywhere. It looked like he hadn't cleaned up all day. Just a terrible, terrible experience. I could not see his name on his posted license because it was blocked by bottles. read more
