Visited Rangoli Indian Cuisine at their North Avenue location for dinner. The staff was very friendly and made the whole experience feel welcoming. Pathetic experience. Got a delivery done last night. I'm amazed at how can one get dal makhani and a garlic naan wrong??? Parking is free on North Ave. and Western Ave., but parking is pretty packed even on the weekend. The place has mostly small tables so highly recommend non-peak hours for large parties. The portions are decent sized for the price. The waitress was friendly and checked in a couple of times. The Rangoli Platter for appetizer was pretty big. We all liked the lamb marsala. The Fish Vindaloo was the spiciest, no bones on the fish. The lamb biryani feels like the lamb was cooked separately from the basmati rice, so the flavor wasn't as immersed in the rice. We also had Chicken 65, butter chicken, and palak paneer. The Chicken in butter chicken was all breast meat so it feels a little dry. I might try carry out next time instead of dining in. read more

We went for the unlimited dosa deal and it was very underwhelming. Everything lacked flavor and was lukewarm. Even adding some salt would have made it a little better. They gave us one bowl of sambar between two people and never asked if wanted a refill even though it's supposed to be 'unlimited'. Wish they still had the Saag Paneer, but they took it off the menu. Chicken Chettinad - perfectly lightly spicy. Most seem to get their orders to-go. The menu included both vegetarian and non-vegetarian appetizers and dishes, seafood items and lamb items, rice entrees, breads, desserts, and drinks. We love going to Rangoli for an intimate meal. The restaurant is cozy and welcoming. It's BYOB and the service is quick to bring you a beer or wine glass when they see you ambling in with that black bag from the liquor store down the street. Love, love, love the lamb korma and lamb vindaloo. Honestly, I've never had anything here that I didn't like. The portions are filling, the biryani is bigger than your head, and do not sleep on the spicy pickles! All of the veg-only dishes are all stars as well. The raita is really flavorful which I often need when I take a breath from eating vindaloo non-stop. I really love it here, and the staff is super cool. read more

I recently ordered this for delivery and let me te you, I wasn't super impressed. I ordered butter chicken,, it was way smaller than I thought it would be for the price. I felt like there wasn't enough chicken or sauce. It tasted fine, but not amazing. The rice was good though, and the naan bread was soft. Overall, the food was okay, but I think for what we paid, I expected more. I probably wouldn't get the butter chicken again, but maybe I'll try something else next time read more

Knocking off a star because the bathroom was absolutely DISGUSTING. I didn't even use it. I felt like I went inside a portaJohn, which I haven't been inside of one in a while. Wish I never went to the washroom because it made me think about the hygiene/cleanliness of the place after my meal. The chicken vindaloo was spicy (I even asked for mild- spice level). The dishes do not come with rice, which was a little disappointing because naturally with such saucy based dishes, you'd have to eat it with rice by default (or naan!). Had a nice experience here during COVID times with a group of 4! They have a relatively small indoor space but do take reservations. They are also BYOB with no corkage fee! I don't know what happened to you, Rangoli. Out of all my take out options this was consistently good for years. But then they removed the spice level options, which wasn't terrible, I'll admit I usually get mild. And then there was less and less chicken or meat included. And now the last two times two of the dishes were disgusting--watery lentils and weird Tikka masala with a strange sweet flavor and ingredients that have never been included before. The ricr and Naan are still good, if I need to say something positive. I think.. maybe give them one last chance? But I don't think so. One of my top 5 favorite Indian restaurants in Chicago. Love their korma and pau bhajee. Also frequently order the mattar paneer and palak paneer. Both are good but not as good as the korma and bhajee. The Bhajee is deliciously spicy and splits well amongst a few people. The korma is rich and smooth. The mattar paneer isn't the best I've had as there aren't enough peas, an odd issue I suppose when the peas are a cheap ingredient. This place is among my top Indian restaurants in Chicago area and approved by my Indian peeps. Also good quality ingredients! What we've tried: - Chicken 65 (4/5): so this is not exactly chicken 65. Doesn't taste like one. However, it's like a good Indian chicken popcorn. - Gobi Manchurian (5/5): so good! This went empty fast! I don't tend to order this dish but got it for my vegetarian people. Highly approved. - Chicken Korma (5/5): the best chicken Korma in town!! Bf is a regular Korma eater and always orders this dish at any Indian restaurant we go to. This is hands down the best we've found here. Super creamy, strong nut flavor, a little sweet that go well with the savory curry. If you order this spicy, it enhances the flavor and gives a kick. - Navratan Korma (3/5): basically veg Korma. Lots of veggies that drown out the sauce. Missing some salt. It tastes like a savory dessert almost. There's pineapple in it which is kinda interesting.. - Chicken Tikka Masala (4/5): this tastes good, a bit sour due to the tomato. I added a bit of salt which makes it much better. White chicken cubes are a tad dry. - Shrimp Kadai masala (4.5/5): The sauce of this curry is so tasty. Taste homemade too. Recommend this if you're bored of the typical cream curry sauce. - Lamb Biryani (4/5): this is very yummy rice dish but it doesn't quite have the flavor profile of biryanis. It's hard to explain. There are a lot of meats and spicy option is super spicy which bf loves. - Malai kofta (5/5): wow. This is so good. Creamy yummy goodness. If you're vegetarian, it's a must try. - Chilly garlic naan (4/5): big soft chewy naan. The seasoning is so so for me, not bad at all though. Dropped by here for some indian food. Pretty empty on a weekday evening, and the staff were very attentive in making sure everything was prompt. Interior is pretty bare bones but clean. The menu is extensive and hits most of the favorites. They will tailor the spice levels so definitely make sure to ask - can come very spicy or pretty mild. Definitely a few to try gobi manchurian - definitely a favorite, and a bit of a different profile at taste than regular northern Indian food. Very sweet and sour, and the texture of the fried cauliflower goes well with the sauce. Wasn't mushy at all. malai kofta - well done here. their curries come in different gravies, unlike some indian places that serve a lot of theirs in the same tomato based sauce. This one is deep and creamy, with a nutty favor. Definitely worth a try. daal - very creamy and well flavored. worth a try for sure. Prices are decent for the portions, although it is a bit on the pricier side. You pay for rice, as it doesn't come with the curries, but it comes as a huge heaping serving. First tried Rangoli as take-out on Grubhub. It was fantastic! The food arrived still hot, and the portion sizes were generous (good for about two to three meals). Ordered them a few more times (again via Grubhub), but then sadly moved to an apartment outside of the delivery range. Fast forward a few months and I'm thinking about exploring the Indian cuisine options in Chicago a bit more in depth. Saw this spot and figured I'd give it a shot for real. Went in on a week night, and the restaurant was nearly full. Street parking only, but there was plenty of it on North Ave. We had to wait for 20 minutes for a table. Waiters were quick and friendly. My friend and I ended up ordering very standard Indian-American dishes: Veggie Samosas, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo, rice, plain naan. The samosas were fresh, piping hot. Went very well with the tamarind and cilantro chutney. The tikka masala was much more mellow and tame compared to the vindaloo (spicy!), but both had a good amount of flavor to them. Portions were large with plenty left over to take home. A few notes: none of the curries come with rice, you will have to order as an extra side. You can adjust the heat level of the curries - a medium is on the higher end of my comfort level and I enjoy spicy food. The restaurant has a BYOB policy - the table next to us had two bottles of red wine, which looked like it could pair fantastically with the curries. Overall, the experience has solidified Rangoli on my list of go-to's, especially for take-out/pick-up. Perhaps not the absolute best Indian food I've tasted, but Rangoli comes out solidly swinging. read more

The service was nice, but I'm sorry, this is a really bad choice for Indian food. We ordered gobi Manchurian, palak paneer, chicken tikka, garlic naan, onion kulcha, and basmati rice. First, neither rice or naan come with the curry, so you have to buy it all separately which adds another 10+ $ to the meal and is far more expensive than any Indian restaurant I've ever been to, and I'm Indian, so I've been to countless. Next, the portions are way too small considering the $18 curries. Maybe it's an illusion because of the size of the bowl, but I was regretting coming here as soon as I saw the food come out. The gobi Manchurian was ok, but the curries were the worst I've ever had. I'm really sorry to be this blunt but it's not fair to charge a premium and give horrible quality. They tasted like nothing. There was no flavor. I hope this restaurant can make some serious revisions to their recipes. The onion kulcha was not good and naan didn't seem fresh.
