The hipster employees are too busy adjusting their beanies to come out and assist in locating things in the store. I bought two cans of shades of red to match at home. I live across the street from the store and go there all the time. Today I bought a bucket from them for an unusually high price. When I got home I realized I didn't need it. A couple hours later I tried to return it to the same young lady but she said they would only give me store credit, but I had to spend it now. I prefer using local businesses as I am a local business owner, but this place exemplifies bad customer service. Now I have to drive across town to Home Depot. FYI owner. God blessed me with two left hands when it comes to repairing stuff. Each time I've attempted to fix something electrical or mechanical, I usually break something else in the process so it ends up costing me twice as much to repair it. I'm thankful I have a good job that pays me enough so that I can pay a professional to do the job right the first time. I've learned my lessons. However ... there are a few things I can do around the house, like change light bulbs, install dimmer switches, connect hose bibs, unclog a toilet ... you get the picture. So when it comes to odds and sods, I always go to the True Value Hardware store at Montecito Shopping Center. This is not one of the larger True Value stores, but they have usually had everything I need, and if they don't have something, they will give me recommendations where I can get it instead of trying to sell me something that won't work. The store employees are pretty amazing -- they are quick to assist, give great advice and even show you how stuff works! It's an old-fashioned kind of feel-good store. Great Hardware shop - they carry it all and have several services like Auto Glass and others. Very friendly and helpful staff - I've stopped in here in the morning or evenings and there's always at least 2 people working and ready to help you out. They have a list of 10 unreturnable items pasted on the checkout counter that most people don't bother looking at. I purchased an UNOPENED combo lock that I tried to return but was told "sorry dude, no return". They didn't warn me when I purchased it. No wonder small stores like these are going out of business. Smaller True Value, but they make up for the more limited stock and very slightly higher prices than the big box stores with solid customer service. Can't remember a time I've ever walked in here and not gotten a polite greeting with an offer to assist, and when I have a question they've always been right on top of it. I said, "Yes, I am looking for surge protectors and power strips." "That will be aisle 3C, sir," replied the clerk. I bought N95 masks a few days ago. At that time the electricity was off and I had to pay cash. I mentioned to the young lady I was buying more than I needed because I was not certain on the sizes needed. Today I tried to return three of the six I purchased. Of course, the note I was told would be there stating they might be returned was no where to be found. I described to the young man in a black jacket with a ponytail that a young thin girl with black long hair waited on me. His response was no one thin works here. He also said they don't sell that mask. I walked over to where they were. He then said do you want me to call the manager? I said yes. Before he called I was told since they don't have power I cannot get my cash back. I had to pay cash because they didn't have power at that time and I couldn't get a receipt then either. I did not appreciate the service I received today. He said you can come back when we have power. My response was I don't live around here. I was evacuated from Windsor. I don't think I would have received this type of service from Mission Ace Hardware. read more

You can go to the depot store and get no service and maybe pay a few nickels less but remember it's farther away (more gas) plus LACK of service. I really wanted to support my local True Value instead of shopping at other hardware stores or the big box stores. Been a loyal customer since moving to Rincon Valley several years ago. After today, I'm done shopping here. The "customer service" is extremely hit and miss, mostly teenagers who don't seem to have much knowledge about what they're selling. Occasionally, I'll encounter somebody who knows there stuff, but it's a rarity. Today I wasn't allowed to return an unopened can of primer because I didn't have a receipt. I told the young woman at the counter that I wasn't given a receipt. Her response "Ya, I'm sorry, that's store policy." And that was that. Really? You're a store that specializes in paint, and that's your policy, no if's and's or but's? Why in the world would I want to shop at an extra pricy store that holds their black and white rules to a higher degree than actual customer service? There are too many businesses around that will take my money and still make an effort to accommodate appropriately. Sadly, Montecito True Value this isn't one of these businesses. Peace. read more

For a small local hardware shop, these guys all the necessaries for your house. I know you pay a little more sometimes when you shop at small stores, but that gets made up for with the excellent customer service and willingness to help. How many times does one have to walk into home depot and search aimlessly for some guidance for rudimentary questions. Alright so practical as they are being just blocks from my new home.....prices are fair but the help from the staff is where the "True Value" of this location comes from!!!! Kelly the employees working last Thursday went so far out of her way to help me replace a drainage hose that was no longer manufactured or available and the ideas she came up with and created were spot on and saved me from having a break down and buying a new dishwasher, She not only saved me from the cheap universal fix saving my wood floors from water damage (as they were to small too short)....officially my hero for the day....give her a raise. read more

When I first started going to True Value at the Montecito Ctr. I transacted with Marwan, whom I found out later was the owner. He listened to what my newest project was, then would make suggestions as to the tools I could use. One time he offered to 'lend' me his magnetic disc, to help clean up screws that had been dumped in front of my driveway. Another time, he helped me find a book on Electrical wiring when I was having difficulty installing a garbage disposal to a multi-switch, by calling the Village True Value. Marwan has done a wonderful job in selecting his employees. I will choose True Value Hardware owned by Marwan and his family over Ace, Home Depot or Lowes anytime. read more

I've been coming to this True Value since moving to Santa Rosa 18 years ago. I've really liked the local feel and friendly service of the store. Up until recently, I also really liked the knowledge of the employees. The service is still friendly, but unfortunately there are new employees who are still learning things. My last two times in the store I was given wrong product information on what I needed. One of the times I had the old piece of plumbing I was trying to replace. I was given something different with the employee saying it would work. I went back with the receipt to exchange the part; however the store wouldn't exchange it because I didn't have the original packaging. If that's policy, fair enough. I like to support local stores, even when that means paying a little more to support the little guys. I've shopped at True Value in Montecito shopping center for years, which is why they get the 2 stars. Today I returned an item that was purchased a week ago. I didn't notice that the packaging was damaged at the time of purchase, it wasn't until I opened the package that I realized the tarp had cuts in it (that matched up to the cuts I then found on the package). Without opening up the tarp I put it back in the package to return to True Value. I honestly didn't think it was going to turn into such a big issue. I was told by one person that they couldn't accept the return because the tarp was wet. Yes, it was wet because the package sat outside when it rained and it got wet because there was cuts in the packaging. I asked to talk with a manager. Another person came over to give me a hard time about trying to return the item, acting like I was trying to pull one over on them by returning the damaged item. He reluctantly told me that they would let me exchange for the same amount. When I returned to the counter to get rung up the same man was again talking about the tarp and that it was a "convenient spot that was damaged" implying again that I was somehow at fault. Overall it was terrible customer service. Why would you make a customer feel badly over a $20 tarp that was damaged at the time of purchase instead of just returning and/or exchanging the item. Way to make a consumer feel bad. read more

It used to be a lot better, but lately they have hired some new help that are basically there to ring up the sales. I bought paint there and it wasn't the right base. It was supposed to be white, but it was neutral(this is a huge error apparently). After painting for 30 minutes I realized it wasn't drying like it was supposed to and the color was WAYYYYY off. When I returned the paint, the woman, Kellie, more than helpful and VERY knowledgeable. She corrected the error and my next gallon was exactly what it was supposed to be. If there are teenagers working when you go there, spend the extra time and go to the True Value on Montgomery Drive, where people actually know the difference between a wood screw and a drywall screw...and between flat paint and semi-gloss(NO, I am NOT kidding). Or just be sure that Kellie is there when you are shopping. You will save yourself a lot of time and energy! read more
