I really like shopping at a locally owned store where I can always find the building and garden supplies I'm looking for.

I would give them 10 stars if I could. 4 employees said "Good morning" with a smile. When I started loading up my car with sand bags, this man came over and said he will load them. I can't even find an employee at Home Depot to ask where something is, let alone have them help load my car. I will continue to drive out of my way to Friedman's from now on. I came here to get a rubber mallet sort of thing. We found the tools section an then the hammers. I found what I wanted. But my husband really wanted a dead blow hammer, and not seeing one, he went and found an associate and asked about it. The person he asked didn't seem to know what it was, but pointed us to the hammer section (where we'd just been). They did not have what hubby wanted there, and we refrained from teasing the employee about their famous tagline, "If we don't have it, you don't need it," though it was hard! lol. Anyway, we were in and out pretty quickly and painlessly. Parking was easy. Store was pretty calm at night, shortly before closing, and we didn't have to wait in line to check out. read more

We were driving from the East Bay and happened ti see the store. We dropped in for a few things we needed and WOW, the customer service was fantastic! Not only did the salespeople truly help, but engaged us, 1st! Asked how they could help, what we were looking for and led us there. My Dad and I said it's worth the 75mile drive!! I love it, here! I walk in; I'm greeted by a polite gentleman who knows his plants and soil; the carts are always neatly in the correct location; I am not bothered and politely left alone; I could ask for help if I needed it, but I'd have to get it out of my car at home anyway and never choose anything I can't safely carry 3 of, in succession, up to my porch steps. The checkout line is rarely a lengthy wait and when it is, shaded, which is also wonderful in a mist or the rain. read more

Besides the garden section I'm not a fan of home improvement stores. Just not my thing. If I have to go to one I go to Friedman's bc they seem more like a hometown local company and employees seem knowledgeable about the products unlike other chain home improvement stores. I love the garden area both inside and out side plants. They have a huge variety of plants and garden supplies. The parking is nice. The lot wraps around the front of the store. There's a food cart right out front too for a quick lunch or snack. read more

Bought over a dozen bareroot fruit trees from Friedman's and planted them. Most seemed to have established. As it is hard to know if a tree will really get growing, it has been more than 90 days since these were purchased. But it turns out, three did not make it while one only has growth coming from the rootstock. Not sure why as they all have similar conditions. Quite frustrating as Friedman's only gives a 90 day window for return. Fairly expensive loss. I grew up going to Friedman's so like supporting them but this experience is a bit frustrating. read more

An amazing experience representing true customer service like the old days. We purchased a Napolean BBQ two years ago from Friedman's. Had an issued a few months in which the manufacturer finally took care of after lots of harassment. Then late last summer a second more detailed issue with the same BBQ surfaced. Went in to the store, asked for a manager and Geordi immediately stepped up, listened to our concerns, contacted his rep, replied back to me while keeping me informed the whole way through and when his rep called "no joy" and denied standing behind their product............Friedman's did and comped me a new equal unit with a smile on their face and took care of me, the customer. The way it should go always in life and I can not commend them enough for how Geordi and his team addressed my concerns. Shop at Friedman's and you will be treated like a person, not a number. Customer service has decreased over the last year or so. Employees used to ask if you need assistance and the register employees used to welcome you with a smile. Unfortunately, the last few times I have had no one ask if I needed help with anything and the young lady at the register today was less than friendly. She just handed me the receipt with not even a simple thank you. She was too busy speaking with the other register employee about schedule. Sad to see that our local store has taken on big box customer service behaviors. read more

Employees are everywhere and so nice and so helpful. this place is LOCAL and has EVERYTHING! They even sell Kelly Moore paint and have a drive-in yard to load heavy stuff. Their prices are not much higher than a big box chain equivalent but they only sell top-quality products you know will last. The garden section is amazing. My Dad has been going here ever since i was a child and forty years later now I'm shopping here. Forty years from now my child will shop here. read more

I can never say enough great things about my shopping experiences at Feiedman's. The merchandise selection is terrific and their tag line 'If We Don't Have It...You Don't Need It' is so accurate. But their stand out quality is their service. There is ALWAYS someone available to answer a question or point you in a direction. On many occassion, I have asked for an item, only to be told 'That's on aisle 27, right side, halfway down on the bottom third of the fixture.' And there are 'experts' everywhere. If you walk into electical...an electrical expert is there. Same with plumbing, lighting, paint, etc. AND there are information booths every 50 feet! After spending way too much time at places like Home Depot and Lowe's this place has quickly become my favorite. In the past if I needed help, if I really needed help I would go to a small mom and pop hardware store like an ACE. However they have a limited amount of things in their small stores. Friedmans is just like a small hardware store with people who can help you but it's the size of a big box. It's amazing here, Green shirts everywhere! This company actually employs more than a bare bones skeleton crew. The prices here don't seem to reflect the extra amount of money this company spends on staffing either. It only does to show just how greedy the larger companies are. I don't think I will ever see the inside of a Home Depot or Lowe's ever again. read more

When I asked for it 4 employees showed up and graciously loaded up 2 carts, pushed back them to register - a sales person saw us and took us to her register with no line. 3 Stars because the good is really good but the bad is really bad. They typically have what I need with very few exceptions. Prices are decent but I try to wait for sales. I will always check out their pepper and tomato starts and sometimes find something really interesting for a good price. I like buying soil and fertilizers here because it's usually on sale and there is often an abundance of the kind that I like. Also, shopping local with good prices is hard to do, so that really works here. 0 Stars for customer service. In the last 4 or 5 years I've not encountered anyone helpful or even willing to help me. I've asked someone to help you lift several cubic square feet of soil bags ans she basically said she didn't want to. Another time I asked if I coukd get help taking them to my car and the guy told me I'd have to go to the loading area to have them put in my car (4 bags of soil) and when I got there they asked why I was there and sent me back to him. When I explained that they sent me back to him, he scoffed and said "Oh well. Whatever." These are just 2 examples. Employees are everywhere and won't ask if you need help, even if they see you struggling. Whenever I ask a question, no one knows an answer, ever. If you know what you want, and you have the ability to do it yourself, this is the place for you. read more

This store has gone way downhill with customer service. I used to come here quite often growing up and building businesses in Sonoma county. I came to the store intending to spend many thousands with them for a new project I had. I had a very pleasant talk with someone named Ryan about pipe I needed and was trying to buy through their 20% off sale. This is just the START of our project. I have bought at their sales in the past and knew they have special rules about how to buy to get the sale price. Ryan told me if I did an in person purchase I could buy both the IN STOCK piping at both the Santa Rosa store and the Ukiah store. I needed to only be at one or the other store. I was buying many thousands of feet of pipe. I live in between the two stores so I said I would go to the Santa Rosa store. An hour drive. I double asked him to make sure as I would be driving an hour. He put me on hold to talk to his supervisor, then came back and said yes, if I was there to do the order in person I could buy the inventory from both stores at the 20% off price. I got to the store in Santa Rosa in person. So I think you know how this is going to go.. the store manager said she had never heard of anyone named Ryan (I had a voicemail from him thank goodness) and played it, clearly from the Friedman Bros phone number. I was told simply I would have to buy the pipe at full price. I told them I had drove an hour to get there. Absolutely no flexibility or offer of some other discount, nothing. In fact they tried to keep insisting they didn't have a Ryan that worked for them after hearing the voicemail. Just rediculous. If it were my business I would offer the customer something! A smaller discount or anything. But I was treated as if I was a pauper looking for a deal. Really really bad customer service. The manager lady went into a drawl about how they have been doing things for years in that manner. But a real good business would have immediately realized this was a training issue on their end and have tried to keep my business...take my gas and time spent out of the guys paycheck, something!! I did also notice there was almost no one in the store which was a complete surprise because on their 20% off weekends it used to be crazy busy. Just a sign of bad business. Let me add in the longest review ever, my gut reaction was to go to Friedmans first to buy, but because of this incident I started to look online and I found the same pipe much cheaper than even their 20% off sale price. As a long time customer of theirs I could have just done my whole project which is hundreds of thousands of dollars with them but through bad customer service they have saved me some money! So maybe this is a five star review. read more

I would rank the following stores: Lowes, Home Depot and Friedman's. Friedman's is where I would come to purchase plants and trees for landscaping because they have a variety and a large outdoor garden. In terms of customer service, they all suck. You can never find anybody for anything. You wander around the large store and if you do find someone, they are busy. Lowes is the higher end, higher price and seemingly better goods. Home Depot is the mid price, mid quality, afforable for the everyday consumer. Then there is Friedman's...seemingly in the middle but after my last interaction over the weekend, I won't consider them for big box items. I came here last Saturday to purchase a bathtub shower door in matte black trim and clear glass. Both Lowes and Home Depot did not have Matte Black available. Low and behold...Friedman's had one on display. I was able to find someone quickly and he searched the computer for inventory and found 1 in stock! Too good to be true? It probably is. I purchased it and went out to the back to pick up. After waiting in the hot 100 degrees smoky air for 20 mins, I'm like what is taking them so long??? The guy comes back and tells me they have ZERO inventory in stock and that the Retail side usually shows a different stock availabilty than the back warehouse. The 1 in stock was the one on disply. What a disappointment! One mess up after another. As we drove out, we received a refund. I went home and went online to friedmans website and it was down for "improvements". SO much for ordering to get it shipped to my house! The next day, Sunday I came back to place an in person order to get it sent to my house. I searched around the bath area and found a lady. She looked up the item and saw 1..which we all know now is the floor model. Then she told me she is not sure if she can get the item from the vendor. She took down my name, phone number and email and told me she will call the vendor Monday morning and send me an update. I receved ZERO phone calls and ZERO emails. Their lack of customer service gave me the runaround for 2 days straight. Wrong inventory information, website down, associates who don't keep their promies. You just lost my sales to somewhere else! read more

They offer great service. Prices NoT dissimilar from HD but superior in every way. A service rep approached me within a minute of my arrival. He helped me find exactly what I needed, cut it to length & helped me out. Near perfection. Go there as we need Friedman's more than right now. Imagine your experience in shopping for their goods without them? Support the best or suffer the result. Without the likes of Friedman's prices will rise, what little service HD and Lowe's offers will decline. It's economics 101. read more

I am trying to DIY a commercial coffee maker in a snack bar. I went in equipped with the manual and pictures of what parts I have and what I need. When I walked in the store, I was asked immediately what I was looking for. I pointed to the plumbing sign and confidently headed that way. I was met in the isle by Larry, the department "expert". He was a life saver! Got me exactly what I needed. Parts I would have never figured out on my own. If I were in another DIY store, I would have stood in the isle, trying to figure it out and eventually left empty handed. Thankful for helpful people here! read more

In search of an attic fan I do my online research to find out what everyone else is selling one for except for Freeman because although they do have a website, they nothing actually listed or have the ability to look up anything for price or availability. So this requires one to go to the store in person and check the price or the availability of an item in person. As you will discover after reading this review that their phone operators are not reliable either. The item in question is sold by Home Depot just not in stock at my current location at this current time. Which means if I wanted to save $30 on an attic fan that Friedman wants $87 for (1/3 the cost) I would have to wait three days for it to be shipped to my local location or better yet my home. The first customer service station I stopped at to ask where the attic fans were located, the older guy and lady there basically ignored me until finally I said something the guy tells me down there check with the next customer service booth. I get to the next one and same thing, no acknowledgement until finally a guy says he is going to lunch, sees me and then nice enough asks me what I need. Directs me down the isle where the product is located before he goes to lunch. So I realize their price is $30 above their competitors which to me is way to high and I'd rather wait the couple days to receive it in the mail. I leave the store and before I get too far away I think to myself maybe they might price match. I called them and the guy on the phone says yes we do price match all we need to do is make a phone call to that competitor to verify that Price. So now I turn around and go back. Fill up my cart with the items that I Want. Head up to the checkout and wait in line, finally get to the cashier and she tells me I must go back to the department to have them do the price match. Now I head back to the back of the store, for the third time, only to be told by that department personnel... They do not price match online items that are not currently in stock at their competitors local location. I tell the lady at the customer service station for that department that this information was not relayed to me and I've just wasted over 30min trying to give you my business and now you are telling me you won't do it. She then proceeds to tell me "SOMETIMES YOU LEARN THE HARD WAY". At this point I call back the number and hope that I get the same guy I talk to half an hour ago. He then tells me "yes they don't price match online items" ... even if it is a Home Depot item and is in stock at other Home Depot locations just not mine. I proceed to explain my frustration since he is the one responsible for my misbelief that this would all be possible and not a waste of time. He shows no true compassion or concern for my inconvenience & then finishes the conversation by telling me "I'm sorry bout that but WE WILL SEE YOU NEXT TIME" and then HANGS UP on me! NO BUDDY, YOU WONT SEE ME NEXT TIME!! THIS PLACE IS A JOKE. NEVER WILL I WASTE MY HARD EARNED MONEY ON YOUR STORE LIKE YOU HAVE WASTED MY VALUABLE TIME THEN TO BE DISRESPECTED BY THEM AS WELL. I went in there tonight with the intention of ordering 11 custom interior doors and 2 exterior doors. There were two workers sitting at the window and door department. And neither of them acknowledged me, or anything. I was there for nearly 30 minutes looking at the doors. And was never helped, so I left. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

Hello. I had a busy day today power outages. I bought a Generac GP2200i a year ago didn't use it until now the Portable Generator. I called the and needed help. The assistant manager called me back and help me troubleshoot. We had issues with trying to find a repair shop. This great assistant manager at Freemans helped us out in many ways beyond the call of duty. I believe from this situation that they are the best store when you're in trouble. they are great. Suffers from the same problem as most brick and mortar stores, they are short employees and those that are there are disengaged and bored. Selection is good and I think supporting local businesses is a good idea. I would rather be here than Lowes or Home Depot. Combining these two comments, you are best off knowing what you want because getting help or feedback on a product is not a good bet. We were looking at BBQs for 45 minutes this week and no one said as much as hello to us. As a side note, they really need to update their website, its old, lacks interactive support and gives minimal information about products. read more

The garden area is really nice & large. So many plants, outdoor furniture , etc.. Home Depot is a joke., never any help, mostly young kids in a corner talking. And Lowes can't compare either. I don't know why I bother going to Home Depot! It seems that I ask myself this question every time I go to Freidmans! It's Saturday and I need a need a new soft close drawer slide with a back bracket. Home Depot has plenty of young adults working returns and checkout, but once you get into the store one hardly can find anyone that works there. One person I asked worked a specific thing. It seems like they are specialized. Lots of customers, but no workers. Then I go to Friedman's. All I see is green everywhere! I truly believe that there were more workers than customers. I start walking toward the back of the store and as I'm passing two employees at the paint area and one tells me "aisle 26". I didn't even ask him and he helped me. I found exactly what I was looking for and the slide and back brackets were $13 while just the slide at Home Depot was $17! There were five plastic containers that were stuck together and he Got them unstuck and placed the paper towel between them so they wouldn't get stuck by the time I got home again. The floor manager (or floor head not sure what the title was) was very knowledgeable about all merchandise and basic odds and ends of things related to my project. The whole store was very clean and well stocked. We had one employee who was not helpful but the floor manager picked up the slack pretty quickly. There's a great plant selection! The "one-star" rating is only because a "0-star" rating isn't available. I went to the Petaluma store on Saturday, April 15th to price bathroom fixtures. Once I had a price, I did some comparative shopping, then returned to the store to make the purchase. We're talking sink and shower fixtures for two bathrooms. The floor person told me he didn't know how to place a special order on the computer, but if I came back on Sunday "Mandy" would complete the transaction for me. I returned on Sunday and was informed that "Mandy" was off until at least Tuesday and there weren't any other people that could help. Three people including an Assistant Manager all threw up their respective hands, and were unable to help. The Assistant Manager, Landon, apologized profusely and I was told to return on Monday when there would be ample personnel available to assist me with my order. I returned, trip number three, on Monday and was told that there weren't any employees on the floor that could complete a special order. One employee went upstairs to the design center, where they do place special orders to see if someone might be able to help. He returned and told me that Adesa would probably be able to help; however, she was going on her mandatory lunch break and wouldn't be available for at least an hour. It was suggested that I make a fourth trip back to the store in the feint hope Adesa could help - no guarantee. I left the store. I believe in supporting our local brick-and-mortar stores and our hometown vendors; however, when you make three trips, money in hand, to buy the store's products, only to be turned away each time because no one is capable of taking the order, or their lunch is more important than a potential customer that is now being asked to make a fourth trip just to give the store their money is unacceptable. Friedman's isn't the only store that carries these products, but it was local and my first choice...what a mistake! I'll go online to purchase the fixtures, have them delivered to my home, and probably save money read more
