I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. The food is amazing, delicious, and made to order. I'm allergic to peppers, and this is a Mexican restaurant. The common refrain of these types of restaurants for someone with my allergies is, "Then why are you eating Mexican?" Not here, never here. They work to make sure I can eat here. Three times, the owner himself has come out to clarify and make sure I can eat without problems. They have gone so far as to make special batches of cheese for me or offered me sliced avocado because the one thing they can't modify is their guacamole. I love this restaurant. I come back at least once every couple of months, and I have to drive an hour to get here. The ambiance is definitely reminiscent of Mexico, and yet each table feels private and cozy. This place was wonderful! I was on a solo trip to Stevens Point, and wanted somewhere cheap to eat. This place came up in my search, and I decided to try it. I'm so glad I did! The service here was amazing. I was greeted immediately, food was prompt, and a man and a woman (I assume the owners) checked on me multiple times. I even had a nice conversation with the gentleman about their horchata being homemade! Everyone was exceptionally kind, and I didn't feel awkward dining alone at all. As for the food, it was very yummy. I had a combo with a tostada, taco, and burrito, all of which were very satisfying. You're not going to get any crazy flavor combinations, but what you do get is solid Mexican comfort food. Highly recommend. Also, I would be wrong to not mention the drinks. I ordered a premium margarita (made with Patron!) and although it was a little sweet for me, it was very refreshing. For dessert I had their rum horchata, which was only $5 and tasted amazing! All in all I had two drinks, chips and salsa, and my combo, and only paid $25 (plus tip). Considering the amazing service and tasty food, you simply cannot beat this place. :) read more

The chicken tacos are amazing. If you order anything other than that on the menu, you will be disappointed. We've been here a few times and every time we try something else it is terrible. The chili rellenos are unrecognizable and can hardly be called that. The Carne Asada is almost inedible. The service is always warm and friendly. I want to like this place. I really really do..but so far..the only thing on the menu worth ordering is the Chicken Taco. So---Go for the chicken tacos and you will not be sorry!!! As for the rest. The likelihood of running into an authentic Mexican restaurant in central Wisconsin is about as good as getting shot in the ass with a potato gun by a bisexual, three-nippled midget (BTM). But now that I think about it, however, I believe that is actually a popular festival in one of the local towns like Polonia or something. Yeah, now I remember, it's the Itty-bitty-three-titty-yam-spanker Festival! It's held every year during the first full moon after the local potato harvest and it marks the anniversary of the Lilliputians' rise to power in France. Oui, oui! Now, it is widely known that the number one enemy of Minikins, as the BTM's are more commonly referred, are Mexican immigrants. Mexicans come from as far away as Mexico. They leave their families and vast fortunes behind risking their lives on treacherous journeys for the mere chance to capture a Minikin and encase it in paper mache. That actually leads into how pinatas came about, but I will leave that for another post. With their hopes fading, and their dreams of capturing the more-elusive-than-a-chupa-cabra Minikin dashed, Mexicans have no choice but to fend for themselves and try to eek out their own American dream. With pesos in hand and tamale recipes ingrained in their childhood memories, they open up taquerias on every other corner of Main Street USA. And now, we have another one in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Ranchito, is as close to authentic Mexican food as you can find around central Wisconsin without making it yourself. They offer breakfast with both traditional and Mexican dishes and are open for lunch and dinner as well. I ordered up a Mexican Machaca with shredded beef, cheese, tomatoes, onion, peppers and a host of yummy spices all topped with a couple of over easy eggs. Just like mom use to make! The flavor of the cumin came through with only some slight heat and as you cut into the eggs, the yolks sluiced their way through the dish and added an element of creaminess and richness that I will certainly go back and eat again, and again. Now, no Mexican dish would be complete without tortillas, and this one was no exception. I had a choice of regular corn, flour or home made corn and the choice for the home made was obvious. Although they were not hand pressed, rather pressed with a manual tortilla press, they were thick and had a great corn flavor and I mopped up every last morsel of goodness with the final bites. The service was great and the sounds of "Estas son las mañanitas" kinda take you on a foodie trip south of the border. The owner, Mr. Perez, is very attentive to everything that goes on in the restaurant. My bill had an error on it but he took care of it promptly and with many apologies. Overall, it was a good experience with good food and tasteful decor at a reasonable price. The building is small and could use a bit more seating, but the booths are comfortable and the restaurant is fairly new so the traffic is still slower than it should be until the word gets out. So, if you get a craving for some authentic Mexican food and you find yourself in the Stevens Point area, give Ranchito a try. Bring your appetite and your Visa card. Because, as I learned, they don't take kindly to strangers trying to pay with a Minikin squirming around in a burlap sack, and they don't take American Express. read more

This was the absolute WORST food I have ever tasted! And I promise I am not over exaggerating. The free salsa and chips are really bland and watery, but that was easily the best part of our meal. My husband and I both ordered the chicken enchiladas with red sauce. I'm pretty sure the enchiladas were either made that morning or the day before (we went around 6 pm) and then sat under a heating lamp until some poor soul decided to order them. I suspect this because it only took our waitress two minutes to bring them out (there was no way they were freshly made in that time) and it was so dry, chewy, burnt and congealed I wanted to vomit. My husband and I were both REALLY hungry, so we were able to choke down about half of our meal before we gave up and started wondering if our health might be in danger. (Thankfully, we both woke up the next day and did NOT have food poisoning!) I also had a lime margarita on the rocks, and that was less than good as well. I can't really put my finger on why I didn't care for it, but I think it was because it wasn't cold and didn't have a lot of ice. A warmish margarita just doesn't taste right to me. On a positive note, our waitress was very nice. So there were some good things about our dinner: we had a friendly waitress and neither of us became deathly ill. It is safe to say I will be avoiding this place like the plague, and would advise you to run the opposite way as well. read more

Love love love this place!!!! The most authentic Mexican Restaurant I have been in a while (and especially for Wisconsin!). We love their Menudo Soup, their guacamole is pretty good too and I love that you can also get Lengua dishes! Most restaurants won't serve these because they are too authentic and Americans won't eat them. We've moved but used to come here at least twice a month. We will miss coming here! I also want to add that when people don't like Ranchito's food is only because they've never really had good, home made Mexican food. read more

Rancheros Mexican Restaurant I would have to give 2 stars, after my last two visits. When I first moved to this town I fell in love with Rancheros on my first visit. I went there mainly for their taco's that were delicious. The service was friendly and fast and I gave it a 4-5 star for a long time. Well a few months ago back in November, my husband and I went there to celebrate my birthday. I ordered the steak taco's like always and was so disappointed, that I returned them for chicken instead. The steak tacos were so chewy and rubbery it was impossible to eat. When the chicken tacos came out to my table I was not pleased with those either. The chicken ones were also rubbery and had very little chicken in them. In January I decided to give them one more try before I band them from my restaurant choices. Holly my friend and I met up there for lunch on a cold Saturday afternoon. Holly had never been there before and after hearing about my last experience was afraid to try them. The host sat us at a table near the window and took our drink order. We got our drinks and chatted for a bit over some chips and salsa before we ordered our food. When the fajitas we ordered came we thanked the waitress and started to assemble our food. Our first couple bites were okay, but then the meat started to get chewy and hard to eat. After we asked the waitress what the deal was with why the meat has changed, she said there was nothing different than normal. I have heard a lot of people complain about this restaurant and will not return after my last two experiences. read more

I feel sorry for folks in the area if this is considered one of the better Mexican dining options. Not that it was bad or anything; it was mostly just standard beans-and-rice Mexican (though they did offer lengua dishes) that was just... average. Maybe it was just the specific item I chose, but this is what Mexican food tasted like 30 years ago when it was still largely considered exotic ethnic cuisine. And best I can tell, up in these parts it still is. Meanwhile, the Mexican food scene has advanced light-years in places that have more than 6 Mexican residents. And those margaritas other reviewers have raved about? Some of the weakest I've ever had. Never even tasted any tequila; just a glass full of cloyingly sweet bottled margarita mix. I've had better margaritas at Chipotle. (Come to think of it, Chipotle really does make a pretty solid margarita.). Fortunately they were on special that evening for three bucks so it wasn't a big loss. The highlight of the night was sitting at the bar chatting with the two waitresses in their down-time. One was from SoCal and the other from Arizona and they shared their harrowing stories of how they landed way the hell up in Possom Trot Wisconsin, how they cope, winter survival tips, etc. Overall it was a nice, charming place with average food, crappy margaritas, pleasant waitstaff, and a festive and convivial environment. If I could split a star and give them 3.5, I would. With my expectations appropriately adjusted downward, I could still see myself returning here next time I'm in the area... but not before checking out other Mexican dining options first. read more

We used to live in Stevens Point and had lunch or dinner here at least once a week. Now that we live near Chicago we always make sure to stop in here when we go up to visit. They have the BEST Mexican food around with a large menu choice! The restaurant is small but the ambiance is great. The service is outstanding, the owners very involved in making sure their customers are satisfied and the wait staff are super friendly and cheerful! My husband is Mexican and being in the Chicago area we eat at a variety of Mexican restaurants...he always says Ranchito still has the best chicken enchiladas ever. Although some of the other reviewers didn't like the salsa...I LOVE it! I buy some to bring home with me and use in our Mexican dishes when we cook at home. One of the best authentic Mexican restaurants I've been to. Thats odd to say considering it is In a smaller town. I was greeted right away by the owner or manager who was very nice. I then had just a few minutes to take in the amazing yet slitly outdated decor. The waitress I had was enthusiastic and noligable of the food. She gave me a few suggestions and told me about the specials. The restaurant bathroom was clean amazingly. This shows that being clean in the restaurant is important to the owners and workers. I can see some painting that needs to be done but everywhere you look it is clean as can be the menus are even clean. Something restaurants over look. To start they give you a homemade salsa and chips for free they are good to start. I also had a cheese Quassadilla which was cooked perfect golden brown and severe with sour cream and salsa. One way to tell if the food is fresh and not frozen is to know if they microwave the food. You will know this by if the plate comes out hot If it is hot it's a red flag one of my dishes was microwaved I asked what had been microwaved and they couldn't give me an answer so that was disappointing. I got a trip combo the food looked good enough as I dug in the rice was bald as hell the refried been where on point the enchilada was great the meat was seasoned really well same with the chimichanga. A plus.. however I also got a taco which looked as if it came out of a differnt restaurant it was greasy and looked like it was thrown together. The reason I'm giving this a 4 star is that the food was really good other then the rice. The taste was great it was clean and for time and appearance and attitude. You don't tend to see restaurants especially small town restaurants as clean this one was. Just a few changes and this could be a perfect Mexican restaurant. NO Microwave!! read more
