It has a cozy warm vibe, and the prices are very reasonable, especially if you're a college student like me who likes to go out and treat yourself. There are several Mexican restaurants in the area, and we decided to go to this one due to a picky child and the fact that they had mini corn dogs on the menu. Big mistake. Definitely not authentic Mexican food. The flavor of the enchiladas was not pleasant, took two bites, and didn't finish the rest. Ate one of the tacos and left the other. The meat was flavorless. The chimichanga was average. The corn dogs were enjoyed. However, before ordering, child asked how many there were and was told 10. When they came out, there was 6. Child pointed this out to the server, who said "oh I just guessed." The other kid ordered the cheeseburger, she didn't like it, so her sister took it. She also did not like it. Wholly enjoyable. While certainly not authentic Mexican it's delicious in it's own way anyway whether you call it Tex-Mex, Mexican-American or just plain delicious. Salsa's really good and is especially better when you ask for the picante salsas. Mnm I like to think you can judge a place by their tamale and this tamale was absolutely excellent. Fat and tender deliciousness, with a nice runny salsas. Yumn!! Went with the veggie fajitas and was so thankful the veggies weren't soaked in grease and were plentiful and of good variety instead of just onions and peppers. Joy riding on the interstate near Steven's Point, WI, when I started to get hungry and saw the beautiful lights on the exterior of this Mexican restaurant (Oopsy-daisy, I forgot to take a photo of the restaurant exterior). I asked the server his favorite dish (as per my norm) and he picked the El Zarape. It was so good and the portion was enough for 2 people. I decided to order some Horchata and it was frothy! Are there Horchata cows in Wisconsin?!? (Just kidding). Seriously though, it was fresh, smooth, and delicious! I thought that this was going to be just another Mexican food place but then I took my first bite and loved the entire experience! This was my first time back in awhile. New location was surprise, Seems a bit smaller, but definitely brighter. Food is still good, service was was as well. However, be aware that they have a different take on Chimichangas. It appeared to be done in a panini press rather than deep fried, like I am used to; and, rather than shredded beef it was diced. I was hesitant because of the reviews on Yelp however husband was craving for fish tacos like he was preggers. So we fought the snowstorm, walked in inches of snow to the establishment, just to order our food to go. Why? He didn't want people to judge him when he's devouring his tacos. So he says. The establishment was empty. There were a couple of girls, upset at their boyfriends, chugging on margaritas and flirting with the waiters. We ordered and waited less than 15 minutes for our food. Our order taker to the person that brought over our food was very nice. Even if our package was to go, they gave us tortilla chips and salsa too. That was so sweet of them. The food were abundant and I had left overs. Husband's fish tacos were amazing and flavorful. My chimichunga was under seasoned and the meat was a bit dry but I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was served with refried beans, Spanish rice, pico, and guac. The price is not bad either. Dinner for two was under $20. I would definitely visit this establishment again. Okay so I literally was just here 30 mins ago and I couldn't wait to review this place. I worked at 7am this morning then right after work headed out on a road trip home for Christmas. I only had time to eat a Cliff bar, and was starting to get really weak/dizzy (I wasn't driving, don't worry! My fiance was) and we couldn't find anywhere that was open. We stumbled on El Mezcal, and saw the open sign so I ran in and asked if there was anything I could get to go and relatively quickly (we have Christmas Eve plans with family and the drive was taking longer than we anticipated) and the guy at the register heard me out, and after a little talking he recommended the burrito for me. Once I ordered he walked back in the kitchen to have them start it right away. I was **literally** in and out of this place in 8 total minutes, and as I was leaving I saw that they officially closed at 6pm tonight. This guy helped me, even though they were closed, and gave me THE TASTIEST burrito, and it was enormous! Plus chips, salsa, and queso. We'll be making sure to stop here and eat every time we drive home, highly recommend for great service, great pricing, and excellent food! read more

El Mezcal was very close to our hotel in Steven's Point. We had driven over to O'so Brewing for a local brew and now were ready to have some dinner. Mexican in Wisconsin, what could be better? This is a pretty typical Mexican family restaurant. The chips were OK with light corn flavor and served warm which was nice. The salsa was mostly pureed tomato and another unidentifiable flavor. It did not have jalapeno or green chile or cilantro, I was not sure what I was tasting. Ms T stayed gringa with a ground beef burrito. The beef was essentially unseasoned. They include a warm, oniony "special" red sauce over the burrito. When the beef is well seasoned, these can be good. This was rather mundane. My huevos con chorizo was on the lunch menu, but they accommodated my request for it at dinner time. I received a large portion, with a good ratio of eggs to chorizo. The chorizo was well flavored and I'm guessing it is something they make themselves or have made locally. It is not like commercial chorizo. The beans and rice were both fine. The beans were creamy and simple. The rice was delicately seasoned as is appropriate for it as a side. I suggest you ask for the spicy red sauce. It had great toasted red chile flavor. It was not really very hot and boasted plenty of garlic. I ate every drop of it on my eggs and beans. Over all it was "A-OK". read more

This is on the end of a strip mall. It's clean and newer looking on the inside with plenty of colors. Staff was friendly. Service was quick. I had the ground beef burrito lunch special. Plenty of food if you eat the chips and salsa. The tortilla had only beef on the inside and the rest of the ingredients were on top for some reason which I have see just once before. I ate here on Wednesday, and I love coming here. This place is the place to go for authentic Mexican cuisine. You are seated shortly after coming through the doors. Then you are given the menus, and chips and salsa, which are good, and you will eat a lot of them. The menu has a lot of options for different food, and I have time deciding exactly what I want to order. Tonight, I ordered chimichangas, and my friend who was with me ordered the fajitas. Both plates came out pretty quickly after ordering, and both were great tasting and plenty of food. To drink, you can never go wrong with the Mexican soda Jarritos (prononced harritos). If you ever go to a Mexican restaurant that offers this drink, get it. Overall my experience was great, the food was great, as were the drinks, and so was the price! I am a fan. It may not be absolutely traditional, but, the food is always good. Their lunch specials are great value for a fantastic amount of taste. Their dinner and fajitas always looked awesome. I've eaten at many taco stands and restaurants through Colorado and Wisconsin. The only issue I have is that they do not have a more traditional menu. It seems like they could, but they molded the menu to being "comfort" Mexican food. They just load the cheese and meat up, obviously for most people that's not an issue. read more

We went in for lunch. First basket of chips were cold. Green salsa was great, red one tasted like it came from a jar. (I always feel if you get homemade red salsa the food will be authentic). This place is not. I got chili relleno and a shredded chicken taco lunch plate with beans. The chili relleno had a meat-chili type sauce over it, which was not good. I also decided to upgrade it to steak instead of ground beef and I was glad I did because the steak was tender and tasty. A Point Favorite. Chips and salsa arrive at the table immediately. Don't forget to try their hot salsa and salsa verde. I order from the Vegetarian menu. The Chili Relleno's are to die for as are the Veggie Nachos (minus lettuce and sour cream). My better half's favorite is the Burrito El Mezcal with Beef. The service is super fast so if you are starving and need to eat immdiately this is the place to go. The Server's are great and you cannot beat the price. I order a 16oz pico de gallo to take home whenever I stop in. It's delish. They could have cared less that we were there or that we would have liked our drinks refilled. Our family visited at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 3. We were seated quickly and given a basket of chips and salsa. We had nearly finished the chips by the time a waiter came to our table. We ordered a diet soda. iced tea, water, and three of the combination dinners; 3,4, &11. It was another few minutes before we finally had something to drink. The dinner, when it arrived, was warm but bland. The beef in both my burrito and enchilada was a purée. The sides, mexican rice and refried beams w/ cheese topping, were overcooked. Our waiter was equally as lifeless. The total price of the meal was reasonable and the seating area was comfortable. The cashier kindly took a check even when a sign indicated "No Checks." While certainly better than a Taco Bell (of which there are three in the area) this restaurant scores firmly in my "Meh" classification. Specifically, OK but hardly memorable. read more

When I got to the park I was shocked to find no plastic silverware to eat with and not even a napkin. I called and they told me they don't provide silverware or napkins unless you ask for it. WTH?!?
