Our family visited at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 3. We were seated quickly and given a basket of chips and salsa. We had nearly finished the chips by the time a waiter came to our table. We ordered a diet soda. iced tea, water, and three of the combination dinners; 3,4, &11. It was another few minutes before we finally had something to drink. The dinner, when it arrived, was warm but bland. The beef in both my burrito and enchilada was a purée. The sides, mexican rice and refried beams w/ cheese topping, were overcooked. Our waiter was equally as lifeless. The total price of the meal was reasonable and the seating area was comfortable. The cashier kindly took a check even when a sign indicated "No Checks." While certainly better than a Taco Bell (of which there are three in the area) this restaurant scores firmly in my "Meh" classification. Specifically, OK but hardly memorable. read more

Stopped at El Mezcal on our way through Stevens Point. It was decent, but have had better in the area. We all ordered quesadilla's, 2 with cheese and I had the fajita selection. They were pretty greasy and fell apart easy, I had to finish mine with a fork and scoop it off the plate. They charge for an extra bowl of chips, which we've never heard of before. The cheese sauce we got to go with it was very runny and not real flavorful - tasted like it was from a jar. The building was pretty basic and had a little flare - the staff was great and very nice. This would not pass for a good Mexican food restaurant in Texas. The Queso is 4/5 stars, but... The hot sauce was not very spicy at all. The extra spicy sauce that we asked for was spicy but bland. This was a struggle for me between a 3 and a 4. We have eaten here numerous times and while the food is on point the service at times can be lacking. This visit was no different. I would probably rate it a 3.5 if that was an option for this visit. We arrived right at 11am when the sign posted on the door said that they opened. We joined another group standing outside the door waiting for someone to unlock it. No one did..so are about 10 minutes after I called to verify that in fact they opened at 11am. They said that they did and I informed them that the door was still locked. Someone came and unlocked it and allowed us to come in. They were really apologetic. As we were seated we got chips and salsa. I informed the server that I had a check in free cheese dip from yelp. He was accommodating and made no issue of it at all. He the took our orders. As he was in the middle of taking our orders the phone rang numerous times and no one was available to answer it so he had to excuse himself to go answer the phone. Upon his return he was again very apologetic and finished taking our order. He promptly returned with our drinks and cheese dip. The cheese dip was pretty good, definitely better than Velveeta melted in a bowl but nothing to write home about...i am not sure that I would order it again if it weren't free. The food overall was good definitely better than most of the Mexican restaurants in the area. He kept the drinks filled and came by several times to make sure that everything was fine. When the check came he comped my son's meal for the inconvenience of the door not being unlocked and for having to answer the phone. Not having to even ask him to do that is a customer service gold star! He went out of his way to make it "right" for us without my even asking. Overall it's a solid Mexican restaurant choice in the area. If i were rating on food alone it would be a solid 4. We will keep coming back when in the area. It's good food, it's quick, and definitely fair prices. read more

In any larger city, this restaurant would be incredible- in Stevens Point, where good ethnic restaurants are few and far between, it is the best of the best. The service is fast, the food is inexpensive, and the restaurant is bright and cheerful. The food, though, is what keeps people coming back- filling and flavorful with a quality that I have never seen in a Mexican restaurant. El Mez is the popular Mexican restaurant in town. They have delicious chicken chimichangas with this white cheese they melt on top of it... So good! Another favorite is the taco salad. Wash it down with a margarita and go on Tuesdays or Thursdays for their drink promotion. Birthdays earn you a free shot of tequila. read more

Does not come close to having authentic Tex-mex quality. Very bland straight out of the jar salsa. The quacamole was more like green sour cream straight out of the dip section at Walmart. The refried beans were runny. The enchaladas had a bland brown watery sause on them. The server that fixed my drink argued with me when I told him his concoction did`nt come close to the drink I ordered. One of my favorite places to eat Mexican food. It's nothing fancy but the Tacos Carne Asada not only taste good but there is a lot of food for your money. Margaritas are always good too! I worked here as a teenager, and love going back! My favorite meal is definitely the quesadilla verde, but I've never disliked anything on the menu. Anything with grilled chicken or mixed meat is great! Their queso was my ultimate pregnancy craving and the guacamole is fantastic, too! I recently discovered their street tacos, and I am obsessed! Great margaritas-- Tuesday's and Thursday's are BOGO! I'm so happy that they now have larger margaritas. The service is always spectacular as well. There are several El Mezcal restaurants in the region. We usually go to the Marshfield location. The food in Stevens Point is for the most part the same, with some slight differences in taste and menu options. The most disappointing portion of our visit was the waitstaff and the wait for food. We waited a full 10 minutes after being seated for someone to come get our drink orders. We placed our food order at that time as well, which should have been a clue that we were really just here for a quick meal. We waited another 10 minutes for our drinks. We had ordered the cheese dip for the chips. It did not come. A couple was seated nearby (20 minutes after we were seated). Eventually their food came and we still hadn't gotten a chip refill or our cheese dip. 45 minutes after we arrived, I flagged down our waiter and asked for the dip and chips. 5 more minutes... out came the cheese dip followed shortly by our meal. I had ordered chicken and they brought beef. They did fix that quickly. We really did not order anything complicated, I can't tell you why that could have taken so long. It seemed that others around us were getting their orders much more quickly. So... you could take your chances here. If I were going to do it again, I would have gone elsewhere. We were looking for a relatively quick meal, and were not expecting to wait nearly an hour to eat. Definitely much slower than the Marshfield location, in our experience. read more

My husband and I went here for dinner and the food was really good and you got just enough food to fill you up, not enough to take home for left overs though. The workers were not very friendly or welcoming and the atmosphere was not as neat as other Mexican restaurants. I eat at El Mezcal in Rapids and Marshfield a lot. I was surprised, therefore, when I ordered a favorite, Shrimp Enchiladas and found it to be somewhat disappointing. Was in town for business about two weeks ago. This restaurant was highly recommended by the front desk staff of the hotel and highly rated on yelp. Went to the restaurant and the atmosphere reminded me of the "average" mexican restaurant in any other city. I ordered one of the combinations and the food came out real quick. Took a bite and with any other restaurant in this town that I've been too, the food was average. In comparison to other mexican restaurants in town, this might be the best, but if you compare this fish to the all the fish in the ocean, this place is your average mexican restaurant that you'll find in any town in america. read more

They charge for a refill on the chips & if you order the lunch fajitas you'll need 6 tortillas; they only give you 3 & charge you $.49 for the other 3.
