The next day, they called me saying they fixed the radiator, but there was an internal leaking issue that the mechanic couldn't figure out and that I should immediately go trade in the car before the engine fails. He gave me zero plausible or any technical explanation for what the origin of the issue was and added another 100 dollars to my service fee. I decided to take my car to a mechanic who is more accustomed to dealing with Subarus with the incredibly vague explanation I received from the mechanic rather than go sell or trade in the car because one person told me he can't fix it. The next day, I received an actual explanation of what the issue was, which was a cross contamination issue with the coolant and engine oil that can happen with the specific engine that Subarus are equipped with and he was able to give me an actual quote to fix the issue rather than telling me to trade in or sell the car. Furthermore, he said that changing the radiator should have only cost me a couple hundred dollars max and that the issue with the engine could have been prevented if I went to an experienced mechanic in the first place! I was overcharged by more than double the actual price of parts and service and literally told to go trade in the car after paying $880 dollars, which I had to haggle down from $900 after the price increased overnight. Please don't come here for any repairs as they are not qualified to provide proper service, yet will overcharge you without any agreement. Charlie took my car for a test drive with me in it, and after hooking up his computer to my car and rebooting my car CPU, the car was back running smoothly again. Apparently, the battery made the TCM buggy, and a simple reboot did the trick. Charlie did not charge me a penny! His honesty, as well as his knowledge in his field, is first-rate. Invited mento bring my truck by for a look, after which he would tell me what he thinks needs to be addressed. He isn't far from my Apt. so I headed right over. Upon arrival the shop might not impress most people positively. The place is full of mechanic bays, has a pothole-laden drive, and there's characters of all sorts milling around. ...I loved all of that. :) I was immediately greeted by Victor, a charming and chatty gentleman who might be latin or might be cajun. All I know for sure is he loves two things: people and cars. There was another guy standing nearby. An older white guy, quiet and studying a pallet with discarded transmissions on it. The way he was eyeing them quietly reminded me of how my dad behaves in mechanics shops. I thought he was a customer. Eventually he started soft-spokenly talking to me about my truck. Turned out this guy was Don! We talked through the possible things going on. Then we took a test drive, a fairly long one too, and talked the whole time about everyday life. I really lile Don, the busiest, happiest 82 yr old I've met in a long time. In the end it was decided the transmission is great. I'm going to come back later in the week for them to change the pinion gear seal on my rear differential. If you're looking for a drivetrain specialist you can feel good about and trust, I suggest you at least come out to speak with Don. I'm sure glad I did.
