Came in to check out the place and to look at the menu. Jimmy (who I read about on here) was at the front and greeted me. I wasn't sure what to get and he provided me with lots of suggestions. I can never decide what to eat and was bouncing between thai or ramen. As I was waffling, Jimmy was saying farewell to what are likely loyal customers and it's clear he's a neighborhood fave! (I was honestly stunned by how many people he was genuinely talking to!) Jimmy could tell I was struggling and asked me if I wanted to sample the ramen. Whaaa...?! Hell yeah! I took him up on the offer and he brought out this goodness in a bowl. (See photo. This is a full on mini serving in my book...not a sample!) It is sharing space with Jimmy Thai and the signage outside is for Jimmy Thai. When we arrived we were quickly seated and given two menus. One for Jimmy Thai and one for Ramen Time. We were also given one plastic bottle of water per a person. The ramen menu allows you to choose a broth, protein and add-ons. The bowl comes with a molten egg and vegetables that usually come with ramen. I got the skinny option which was half the portion of noodles and additional vegetables in addition to a protein and molten egg. The ramen was good. The egg was a bit overcooked and one of the vegetables was thick chunks of green pepper which was good but different. The price was reasonable. The Ramen soup is amazing! My husband and I both shared the karrage chicken appetizer. The meat was soft and easy to chew and very tasty, you also get a nice portion size perfect for 2-4 people to share. They gave us a bottled water as soon as we were seated. There is an air cleaning machine in the center of the dining room and I have not seen this at any other restaurant, this is a bonus reason to dine here. We both ordered the same, Ramen Tonkotsu (pork broth) and pork Chashu meat. I ordered mine spicy and my husband wanted it mild. I went here for lunch and ordered curbside. I had the skinny Ramen with chicken broth and chashu beef slices. Ordering on the website from my phone was pretty easy. Nice to see they integrate with Google and other providers to not have to create a new password. The place is not easy to find mainly because the restaurant goes by another name Jimmi Thai. Maps places it on the wrong side of the DMV. There are no spots for curbside which just increases the confusion. Not sure why they ask for make and model of car when I received no text about it being ready even 5 minutes after the time they gave me (30 minutes lead time). How exactly were they going to find me? I ended up going inside and it was already bagged. The portion size is on the small side. I enjoyed the vegetables and the beef was tasty. I appreciated how they kept separate the broth from the food when packaging it to go. Would I go again? Yes, if a friend wanted to go. When you walk in, you can sit at a table, or the counter/bar. I chose the counter. They give you two menus - one for Ramen Time, and one for Jimmy Thai. I'm not sure why they don't simplify things and give you one menu, but it is the owner's prerogative and won't effect my rating. At lunch time, after you are seated, and decide what you want - you walk up to the cash register to order, they give you a number, and bring you your food. I ordered the Tonkostu Ramen with Chicken Karaage. It was excellent! I never think of Ramen as very hearty, but it's been a couple of hours since I finished lunch, and I'm still full (and all I had for breakfast was one banana). One word of caution: When you order at the register, there is a tip jar. Naturally, I threw my tip in there. Then, after my meal I thought: "uh oh, the wait staff probably didn't see me throw a tip in the jar. I hope they don't think I'm stiffing them." We were at Macy's until around 8pm tonight. When we left we were both hungry so we looked for something hot to warm us up because it was chilly out. As usual I mapped it and we arrived & drove around the parking lot 2X's driving slowly trying to locate "RAMEN TIME". We were unable to find it so I remapped the location thinking perhaps we had the wrong location. I ended back up on Lake Cook Road only to be redirected back to the same strip mall. Once again we drove around looking for "RAMEN TIME". Nada? I called the number and they told me it was by The Dunkin Donuts as you entered the lot so we went back to Dunkin Donuts & circled around the building. Once again NADA? WTF? I called once again and found out the name of the restaurant on the storefront is "JIMMY THAI". After going in I questioned them on the discrepancy as it's very confusing looking for "RAMEN TIME" W/a "JIMMY THAI" sign he told me they combined the spaces. After going in they had 2 menus on 2 different walls, 1 for "RAMEN TIME" & 1 for "JIMMY THAI". When all was said and done we were finally able to order ramen the ramen we were craving it was pretty tasty. I got the miso based broth w/shrimp tempura on the side. The shrimp tempura was good, but a bit odd in the respect that it wasn't light, crispy & fluffy like tempura you get at a good Japanese restaurant. The tempura reminded me very much of the pre packaged pieces of shrimp tempura that I pick up at Assi (Korean market). Lately I have had a craving for hot soups w/noodles either Ramen or Pho (probably the colder weather). Ramen Time was pretty tasty but kind of a small portions by comparison to other ramen restaurants I have been to recently. I decided to give Ramen Time a try this week when I was graving some delicious ramen! This restaurant did not disappoint. I used their online ordering system to pick up my meal curbside and the whole process was a breeze. Ordering online is really easy with them. You just need to pick your broth, protein, and veggies, and they prep it for you beautifully! I also really like that they kept the broth, protein, and noodles/veggies separate so your food doesn't get soggy. I found I actually had a LOT of broth left over, so if you want to make some noodles and veggies later on to add to the extra broth, you can definitely do it. Just a year ago, premium ramen was probably one of the last things I'd expect to find in this area of Deerfield that caters mainly to local businesspersons and travelers. Fortunately, Jimmy saw the need to fill in a gap here (for those who can't travel to Glenview, Northbrook, Arlington Heights, etc. where this is more common) and has done a commendable job with his offerings. I tried a few items here, but this was enough to solidify a positive impression of the restaurant. The edamame was prepared nicely and steamed just about right. Slightly salty, but was pleasant as an appetizer. The shrimp tempura was super crispy with a nice meaty bit of shrimp inside. As for the ramen, the tonkotsu broth was thick and aromatic, with an instant sense of umami -- without being too salty. This was tempered nicely with bok choy, cabbage, and scallions. In the middle of dinner last night, I asked my husband if we could come back to Ramen Time. "We haven't even finished eating yet!" he said. "I know, but I want you to promise me we'll come back." We floated Ramen Time as a dinner idea a few times but it was often too late or we weren't quite in the mood. Past Stacy, you were a fool. The staff are incredibly friendly, including the owner Jimmy who stopped by the table a few times throughout our meal. He answered my questions about my food allergy and assured me that I would be able to enjoy dinner without fear of getting ill later. I had the tonkatsu broth with mixed vegetables. The vegetable blend is hearty - green peppers, green beans, broccoli, and carrots - in addition to the vegetables that already come in the ramen. The broth was rich and flavorful and there were plenty of tasty noodles. The molten egg was cooked perfectly. Staff were attentive throughout the meal, checking to see if we were enjoying our ramen and refilling our water. The more I eat at Ramen Time the more I like it. The ramen has really grown on me. The broth is rich and flavorful, just like it should. The Habenero paste is wonderful and adds a taste but spicy flavor to the ramen. This is not the one dimensional ramen broth that some places in the area have. The broth is rich in flavor like it should and the flavor shows that it's been simmering for a long time. The veggies, broth and pork chashu all compliment each other to create a delicious bowl of ramen. The service is second to none, the owner and staff will always make you feel welcome. Growing up most of my life in Japan, I am very picky with ramen. I'm really happy I found a place locally that I would love to come back to! I had the chicken karaage as an appetizer, and tonkotsu ramen with Chashu pork for my main dish. The karaage wasn't as flavorful as I wanted it to be, but I think it was still great since it was paired with spicy mayo to dip in. The tonkotsu ramen was great! I love how they cooked the chashu, where it was very tender and easy to chew on. The noodles are cooked perfectly, and there's a good amount of vegetables in it. The broth has a hint of pork flavor but it leans towards the Asian pork broth taste with miso added, rather than the thick creamy pork tonkotsu known in Japanese Ramen. Possibly the worst ramen I've ever had. I had really high hopes for this place because of all the great reviews. The owner is so kind and greeted us as soon as we walked in...but that was the only highlight of my experience. It took 10 minutes for a waitress to acknowledge us and she rarely checked in to fill drinks or make sure we didn't need anything. At the end of our stay we eventually had to ask the owner for our check after waiting around for 15 minutes after we were finished. We ordered fried tofu after being told they were out of spring rolls - which was fine. However, those were pretty terrible as well. The ramen lacked flavor all around and the meat (I ordered the pork chashu) was dry and tasteless as well. My fiancé and I paid extra to add on molten eggs... and those weren't even cooked correctly. Overall, the ramen here isn't terrible but I'd have to recommend Ronin's Spoon ramen over Ramen Time's based on two factors, portion size and flavor. Portion size: I'm sure Ramen Time's portion sizes when you dine in are great, but I was little disappointed with the takeaway size when I'm used to a giant portion size from Ronin's. Ronin's takeaway containers are essentially the same size as a full ramen bowl when you dine in. Flavor: Overall, the flavor of the ramen here isn't bad. I ordered the spicy tonkatsu (pork broth) ramen and it has the right texture and amount of spice. That being said, Ronin's Spoon does it better. A few ingredients missing from the ramen here that Ronin's Spoon sets itself apart with are the bamboo shoots, woodear mushrooms, nori, narutomaki, and lotus root (to name a few). Instead, Ramen Time gives you some cabbage and bok choy. Why didn't I just get ramen from Ronin's then? Well, today I figured I'd give Ramen Time a try since it's across the street compared to a 12 minute drive. Ronin's Spoon is also a few dollars more per bowl but oh man is it worth that extra pocket change. Would I eat at Ramen Time again? Sure, but I won't order the ramen. read more
