We decided to eat at this adorable little stand alone restaurant last night. I've passed it many times and was curious as to how the food would be. This is an adorable sushi/ramen restaurant that appears to be family owned. It's such a cute little space and I saw that it had a lunch menu that I definitely need to try out. I went with my family on a Monday night at around seven and there was only one other patron there. I don't think the word has gotten out yet, but this place is going to get packed when people see and taste the quality of the food. Our waiter was great and super polite. We had great service and our food was timed and served perfectly. We started with edamame and gyoza and everything was outstanding. Super flavorful and very fresh. My son ordered the I Love Salmon sushi combination plate. He said everything was super fresh and delicious. He is quite the foodie and if he says something is good I believe it. I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen, which was outstanding with big pieces of pork in it and my husband ordered the spicy vegetable Ramen, which lived up to its name! I did like that there were vegetarian options on the menu. This is going to be a place that I go to regularly. Solid spot to enjoy some Japanese food in the Northwest suburbs. This spot isn't too busy and is a little hidden, so you easily drive by it without realizing it as you drive around the Milwaukee Ave area. The interior is alright, with just enough decoration to feel like a sit-in restaurant and a good amount of light coming in from the windows. The service is super fast and friendly, and you'll get served quickly on a visit here. Parking is also plentiful right outside the restaurant. For me, the food here is alright -- it's fresh though maybe not as satisfying as some other spots you could go to -- due to the seemingly healthier preparation they have on the food. That is, it's a bit lighter on sauces and unhealthy elements, instead opting for more vegetables. Depending on what you're looking for, this could be a good thing as you could probably eat here frequently and help to maintain a diet -- but if you're looking for heavily sauced sushi like what you'll find at an AYCE option, this might not be what you're looking for. Portion sizes are fairly good here and prices are fair. Overall, solid spot if you're looking for healthier Japanese food. Came here for lunch, and we were seated right away. Being on such a busy road, it's pretty much a standalone shop. We ordered the lunch special of Poke which came with Miso, and it was fairly priced for the area - even would say on the lower end of price. Was $15 for a spicy tuna Poke bowl along with Miso soup. What was nice about the Poke bowl was that it had a lot of fresh salad greens surprisingly and not that overdone with rice. Also very flavorful and fresh and a generous portion. The miso soup was OK as well, nice to warm you up on a cold day. The food came out quickly and service was friendly and attentive. My husband and I went to Sakae Sushi with a friend on a Thursday night. We were greeted by a very friendly server. He led us to our table and brought out waters for us quickly. Sakae Sushi is a small restaurant with lots of great decor on the walls. I ordered the fish katsu while my husband ordered the salmon poke bowl. We started with miso soup, which comes with all the entrees. The salmon bowl was good but I wish that the salmon was a little more flavorful. I wanted the fish katsu because I've never had that before, The portion of fish was huge. It also came with a California roll, steamed rice, salad, and shumi. All of my food tasted fresh and was delicious. I saw the chef leave the restaurant to smoke several times. I hope that she washed her hands upon returning to the kitchen. When we left the chef was standing at her car smoking. I highly recommend Sakae Sushi! read more

Sakae Sushi was just alright to me. It seemed like a solid place to get take out sushi from, but we dined in. The inside is pretty small, but it wasn't busy when we got there & we got seated right away. I really liked the spicy tuna roll we got. We were staying in prospect heights for a business trip and stumbled on Sakae Sushi by accident. We went back and got the same exact meal 2 days in a row. Best sushi spot we have came across! On a Thursday evening, we were seated immediately. There were two other parties, but there were many orders for takeout. Service was very good , he offered suggestions and allowed us to take our time to review the menu. I had the teriyaki chicken , which came with rice, salad , and 4 sushi rolls. It also came with two tater tot like fish rolls, they were very good. I was expecting the chicken to be served on top of the rice, but it was separate. Not a bug deal, but I would have liked more teriyaki sauce for the rice. The chicken was very tender and the salad was fresh and I liked the dressing. My husband had the Shumae- shrimp dumplings and Spicy Shrimp Tempura Udon. The serving of Udon was very large. He enjoyed both. My daughter had a variety of sushi rolls. They were fresh. They offered miso soup with each meal, and it was ok, but not as good as our other dishes. Definately worth trying if in the area. read more

Nice snowy evening called for some warm ramen and sushi. My youngest son came here with his friend's family and really enjoyed it. He's a picky eater so it's a win for us (new sushi place where he will actually eat something)! We were greeted warmly and seated quickly. It wasn't busy, there was another table dining and 2 other tables were occupied by the time we left. It's a smaller place as some reviews have said. Don't let that discourage you from dining in. The place was warm, clean, and had a very pleasant ambiance. There's a sushi bar for those who want to watch their food being made and about 10-12 tables. They seem to do a lot of take out, at least 4 people came in to place take out orders while we dined in and they took a few by phone too. Our server was so nice and welcoming. He gave us time to look over the menu, offered suggestions, and brought us water right away. Our order was pretty solid and the sashimi was incredibly fresh. They didn't skimp on their sashimi slices either. Here's what we ordered: Edamame: lightly salted and the beans were cooked well, not mushy and not too hard. Sashimi Sampler: nice and fresh, larger pieces to enjoy. Definitely recommend this! Chicken teriyaki: my son's favorite. The sauce is a good combination of savory and sweet. The chicken was tender and juicy. His order came with salad, rice, California maki, and these yummy fried fish rolls. Mixed Tempura Box: crispy and light, not greasy at all with fresh vegetables. The shrimps weren't skinny little shrimps so that is a plus. Tonkotsu Ramen: The broth was rich and tasty, not salty at all. The pork belly was tender and flavorful, there were 3 generous pieces in my ramen. I've had a lot of tonkotsu ramen and this was a nice solid ramen for a cold, snowy night. Sakae Sushi is just off River Road and Camp McDonald Road. It's a sushi restaurant amongst trees and road, yet definitely worth a visit (and maybe avoid the miso ramen as others have commented, but get the tonkotsu ramen instead) and the service can't be topped! read more

My son and I went here on a weeknight and we were able to get a seat easily. Sakae is located near the corner of Camp McDonald Road and Des Plaines River Road, and has a spacious parking lot. The dining area is a good size, with roughly 7 or so tables and chairs, and a TV on one wall. We ordered: Tofu Yaki Udon Stir-Fried Udon Noodles with Tofu, Vegetables & Special House Sauce. Yellow tail roll -- the typical roll with yellow tail in the middle Gold Rush 1848 roll, which had Grilled Eel, Spicy Crab & Grilled White Tuna With Avocado & Gold Flake. The gold flakes really drew my son in. Alligator Roll which had Eel & Shrimp Tempura with Crunch & Avocado Tonkotsu Ramen was the traditional ramen you expect, with creamy pork Broth, Pork Belly, Onion. The pork belly on this dish was phenomenal... so tender and flavorful. Our meals came with miso soup, which was a nice touch, especially on a cold winter evening. Service was prompt, food came out fast, and the overall experience was good. BATHROOM REVIEW: Located off to the side, near the back, the men's bathroom was single-person, although there is a urinal and a toilet. I always wondered in those situations, do I lock the door? I mean, I suppose someone is free to use the urinal while I do a #2 on the toilet? Either way, all was in working order, things were fairly clean, the sink was in working order. Decent bathroom. I got a miso ramen and a unagi roll. Just like another reviewer said, the miso ramen broth was just the miso soup mixed with more miso and noodles. I had a lot of miso tare unmixed in the bottom of my bowl too. This did not have any depth of miso flavor (or any flavor). It tasted like watery miso soup. That was a bummer. Egg was hard boiled and there wasn't any sort of aromatic oil on top. A lot of floating miso bits from the miso soup tho, almost a bit off putting. Sad because I actually wanted to eat tasty ramen that day. Eel roll was $8 but was the smallest (like 1 inch diameter) roll I ever seen, with a tiny piece of eel in the middle. My friends have ordered take out before, but we decided to go eat at the restaurant this time. We ordered: - Miso Ramen - Playboy roll - OMG roll - Crunch Munch - California roll I'm not a huge fan of ramen in general, but I really liked the miso ramen! The noodles were legit and chewy, and the broth was subtle in flavor, soupy, and hot. I would order this again on a cold day! The playboy roll is spicy! The red sauce on top packs a little bit of heat, but the jalapeno on top...that'll burn your tongue and probably make your eyes water and nose run if you eat the whole roll. Everything about it was fresh, but it wasn't my favorite because the spice took away from the taste. The crunch munch is one of my favorite rolls because I love shrimp. It is simple and packs good flavor. And the California roll is a California roll haha. It was good, but didn't have unique flavors like the other rolls. Onto the service and atmosphere! The customer service was great, even though we did wait a bit before we got to order. There was only one waiter and she was busy looking after the rest of the 5-7 tables. She was super friendly! The atmosphere was very welcoming, cute, and clean too. Even though the restaurant is kind of small at first glance, it's actually perfect inside. I am shook, how does this place have a great review when their eel roll is filled with fish bones and their shrimp tempura taste like frozen tempura heated up in rice? Spicy salmon is regular salmon with a dab of chojang which doesn't even cover the fishy fatty taste of salmon. Not worth a second visit. read more

So many issues unfortunately: 1. While the miso soup is free, it was one of the worst I have. Very watery and had an overall bad taste. 2. Spicy Veggie Miso Ramen: The egg yolk had gone green and was way overcooked. The tofu was raw and flavorless. The miso broth was the same as the miso soup, no real dashi flavor. 3. Spicy Salmon Roll: The spicy sauce was gochujang, which was odd and overly sweet. A spicy mayo would be much better. 4. Akedashi Tofu (as it's called on the menu): No dashi flavor, no scallion. Just fried tofu with bonito and a teriyaki sauce? That's not right. 5. Bento Box: I tried to swap the california roll (allergy) for an avocado roll, but the waiter would not allow it. Not sure why because it's just removing the imitation crab from the roll. 6. TV was playing a slapstick comedy show, which made the ambiance odd for a hole in the wall sushi establishment. read more

I love love love this new sushi place that opened in our neighborhood. My family of 3 have already made this our go to sushi place. We have ordered from here multiple times and will continue to support this establishment. I will post more pictures with our future orders. 1. Portions are very generous 2. Compared to our other go-to Sushi places (Blu-Fish and Poke Burrito) the sizes of the rolls here at Sakae are comparable. The rolls and bowls we have tried are sized perfectly and depending what you order and how hungry you are, you most likely will have leftovers to enjoy later. We dined in today and: 3. Staff was very friendly and checked with us frequently. Covid precautions were followed, hand sanitizer, distancing and masking. Restaurant was clean and bright! 4. Constant stream of customers dining in and picking up orders while we were eating signaled to me a good following for Sakae. Today I ordered the spicy tuna poke bowl which was fabulous. Portion was so generous, I took home half. Fresh tuna poke, fresh vegetables, sauce was great. Perfectly spicy! In the past, I have also ordered the Willis Tower off the appetizer menu as my meal. The Willis Tower is also more than enough to serve as a meal. I will be alternating between these 2 in the future. My husband ordered a Kamikaze roll and the spicy tuna hand rolls which we shared. Also very good and took leftovers home. Our take home orders in the past have included the I Love Salmon plate, spicy tuna rolls. spicy salmon rolls, the Willis Tower (every order we take home!), spicy miso ramen, Windy City roll and spider roll. We have not been disappointed. Lastly, the one and only time our order was wrong on take out and spicy tuna rolls were sent home instead of spicy tuna "hand rolls". Sakae acknowledged and made note of the accidental mix-up and corrected on our next order. Go try this place! Finally tried this place in June 2021. There were 5 tables that could seat 4 people, 2 tables to seat only 2 people and a bar area that could seat I think 6 people. It was pretty full halfway through our time there. I got the free miso soup, I didn't like it at all due to the seaweed taste I think. Also got the miso ramen the ramen was pretty good. The chicken and pork dumplings were great. The chicken teriyaki tasted amazing along with the salad and the dressing. The only downside is that even though there was only two other tables occupied when we got there a lot of other tables got their food before us even though they had arrived after us, the waiter did apologize for our wait. read more

New Japanese restaurant in Mt Prospect. It's really cute and clean. Feels welcoming and inviting. The owners are really nice and the food is really good. The sushi's are fresh and raemyun and udon are well prepared and hits the spot. I haven't found any decent Japanese places around with good price point and satisfying like sakae and I have tried many places. I always feel like I overpaid or fish quality is lacking at other places around. BTW they also have hae dup bap which is various sushi with rice, lettuce and hot sauce. First time at Sakae Sushi! I've passed by it a few times but it's kind of in the middle of nowhere with no other restaurants by it. I think Sakae might be a chain of a sushi restaurant in Urbana Champaign called Sakanaya. I noticed a lot of the similar items on the menu including the Willis tower. The restaurant isn't too big inside. It gives a very cozy and family friendly vibe if you know what I mean(?) lol. I tried the Willis tower, alligator roll, and spicy tuna roll. It really brought me back to my college days. Alligator roll was flavorful with great texture. Crunchy shrimp tempura in the middle and sweet avocado and eel combo. Willis Tower didn't look as appetizing as I remembered it to be but it was still delicious when mixed. Spicy tuna classic roll was fresh and yummy. We got our complimentary miso soup after being seated. The service was quick and wonderful. The one difference between Sakae and Sakanaya is the vibe. Sakanaya delivered a very fancy and trendy vibe with dim lighting and its interior design. The vibe of Sakae is completely different which is a bit unfortunate because people nowadays go to places for the vibes (you know, do it for the gram). Great food...ordered Alaskan Roll, yummy and tasty; Spider Roll great flavor and Soft Shell Crab that was tender even though it was fried; chicken teriyaki kitchen entree was excellent, chicken was sliced after grilling and had lost of teriyaki sauce, the box included steamed rice, shumai, ginger, salad 4 California rolls, some sort of smaller dumpling and came with a tray for soy sauce. All this in a compartmentalized in their own area. Great food, watched the order being packaged and double checked. Cute place, 6 tables for 4 each. Great service.
