Tonkatsu
Cici C.

Hwe dup bap was as good as everyone else's reviews. Lots of sashimi. Also had some octopus pieces. Veggies are chopped very finely, which I liked. Definitely low on rice, but I'm totally fine with low carbs. Portion is slightly smaller than other Korean places. Tonkatsu was also good. For the price, they do give you multiple pieces of pork. Liked the portion size. Generous with the sauce, too. It comes with miso soup and a bowl of white rice. Banchan were okayish. We liked the seaweed. The fishcakes were a bit dry. They didn't actually give us napa kimchi, which is a first for us at a Korean establishment. Did not get sushi because of the reviews here.

Under new ownership.... what a huge disappointment. Been picking up lunch from here for over a year. Delicious and good portions. Under new management... My chicken teriyaki bento box is missing teriyaki sauce. Rice portion has been reduced by more then half. No more spicy tuna rolls, all replaced by cheaper California rolls, and barely enough dressing to cover 1/4 of the salad. My brother's tonkatsu is missing donkatsu sauce! Really sad I won't be going back. Worst part was when these issues were addressed the new owner showed absolute no interest to rectify the issue.

Hwaedupbap!!!

Thanks to all the Yelp reviews, I knew exactly what I was going to order when I stopped by Sushi Box for dinner last night. I completely agree with people who've mentioned that their hwaedupbap (Korean version of sashimi over rice) is probably the best in town. I was very pleased with the amount of sashimi in the bowl, along with very fresh veggies, and other tasty toppings. There was very little rice, which I actually preferred, so the flavors of the fish and toppings were very distinct. On the outside, Sushi Box, looks kind of like a hole-in-the-wall type of place. The location is small in size, but don't let the size of the restaurant fool you. They have a large menu of several yummy offerings, including Japanese and Korean food. I was absolutely pleased that the sashimi bowl came along with a bowl of miso soup and Korean side dishes. Service was overall great and friendly. If you're looking for a good value and great hwaedupbap ($13.99) in the area, check out Sushi Box! There is limited amount of parking in front of the strip mall.

I really like that you have a lot to choose from, and the included amount was decent. Like, you can pick up to five different toppings like edamame, pineapple, etc, up to three different proteins, toppings like tempura flakes, and different types of rice, including purple rice, which was great. I went with black rice, pineapple, masago, green onions, edamame, salmon, tuna, tofu, and some spicy sriracha. It was delicious. My son loved his poke bowl, but he did say he wished there was more rice. Overall, food was great, service was good, and the overall dining experience is worth a revisit. BATHROOM REVIEW: Located near the back, there is a men's and women's bathroom. In the men's, there is a urinal and a toilet. I always wondered whether to lock the door behind me in these situations. Well, I couldn't anyways, as the lock was broken. So I peed as quick as possible, to avoid being walked-in on. The toilet handle was hard to press but thankfully I got to the gym and it paid off here. Sit or squat? Squat.

We have tried both the regular version and the spicy, and which is our favorite? Both! It is an addictive dish -- so order the large size -- you will devour it all! Having this delicious dish a few years ago sent me down a rabbit hole where I was determined to make it myself. I can make it myself, yes, but HBS is far superior. Everything is packed nicely, and even their packages of nori taste better. This is a fun dish for a party (everyone will ask you where you got it) or even just to treat yo self.

It requires a bit of planning ahead for dinner, but well worth it since it's one of the few meals that my entire family enjoys. It's basically a big box of rice and crab filling. You heat it in the oven for 15-20 minutes. Scoop it into seaweed, which the kiddos find super fun...and you've got yourself an easy and healthyish dinner. We've tried both the regular and spicy and all prefer the regular. One large + one small is perfect for my family of 5 and we always have enough for leftovers the next day...and it tastes just as good a day later. I've been told it's extra good if you slice up cucumbers and avocado to add to it, but even that requires too much prep for me and it's been tasty enough on it's own. We've had it twice over the last few weeks and everyone enjoyed so much that I plan to make it part of our regular dinner routine.

Fujiyama Japanese Restaurant - Unagi Nigiri ($3.50) - eel

This cute and cozy restaurant is tucked into a corner of the White Plains strip mall in Northbrook. Since its immediate neighbor, Grill House, is so prominent, Fujiyama is easy to miss. The restaurant was not busy that Saturday evening. Our server, Sally, was friendly and attentive, and she was the only waitress working in this small restaurant. My husband and I each ordered a hot green tea ($2.95 per cup). Sally made sure our tea cups stayed filled throughout the evening. We shared an order of gyoza (5 pieces for $5.50), Japanese-style pan-fried dumplings. They were fine, but nothing outstanding. I ordered a Dragon Roll ($18), which was prepared differently from the version I usually enjoy. This one featured cooked eel on top of a California Roll. Although it was good, I would have preferred avocado on top, drizzled with more eel sauce. Considering that their California Roll costs only $7.50, I wasn't sure the Dragon Roll offered the best value for the price. I also ordered a piece of unagi nigiri ($3.50), and the eel was nicely prepared and delicious. My husband ordered Bento Box A ($22.95), which came with chicken teriyaki, sashimi, tempura, and soba teriyaki. The presentation was lovely, and everything looked fresh. My husband enjoyed his meal. We also thought it was a good value, especially since we rarely see a bento box that includes sashimi. In fact, this was the first one we'd seen. Overall, we had a good experience at Fujiyama. The food seemed authentic and satisfying, and the service was attentive. I would like to return to try some of their other rolls, especially the more affordable options, such as the Salmon Roll ($6.50), and see how they compare with those at other Japanese restaurants we frequent. I'd rate Fujiyama 4.5 stars out of 5, rounded up to 5. It's a cozy little restaurant worth a visit, and I'm looking forward to trying more of its menu.
