It has been a while since I ordered from Hot Box sushi, but I must tell you it is delicious! Something about warming up this casserole and serving it warm, will convert even the non-sushi eaters. We have tried both the regular version and the spicy, and which is our favorite? Both! It is an addictive dish -- so order the large size -- you will devour it all! Having this delicious dish a few years ago sent me down a rabbit hole where I was determined to make it myself. I can make it myself, yes, but HBS is far superior. You pick this up from outside actual house so be sure to order online ahead of time vs just stopping by. It requires a bit of planning ahead for dinner, but well worth it since it's one of the few meals that my entire family enjoys. It's basically a big box of rice and crab filling. You heat it in the oven for 15-20 minutes. Scoop it into seaweed, which the kiddos find super fun...and you've got yourself an easy and healthyish dinner. We've tried both the regular and spicy and all prefer the regular. One large + one small is perfect for my family of 5 and we always have enough for leftovers the next day...and it tastes just as good a day later. I've been told it's extra good if you slice up cucumbers and avocado to add to it, but even that requires too much prep for me and it's been tasty enough on it's own. It is what my boyfriend and I said today after eating half of our Large Spicy order for lunch and before eating the other half for dinner. Everything about this place is simple, efficient and straightforward. Did I need to mention that it is also locally owned and operated? The entire process can be done online and completely contactless. You can order online through the website or by DMing the owner via Instagram. Once you place the order, expect to wait up to 1.5 hours for you to get a text saying your order is ready. Then drive to the northbrook home location and pick up your order in the cooler located on the front porch. Your order will be labeled with your name! Then take it home or wherever you are planning on eating it and either place it in your fridge for up to 3 days for later, or get your oven preheated to start eating in 15-20 minutes time. My boyfriend and I ate it by itself, but I could totally see it as a great group party entree item or supplemented with your own spin on your DIY california roll (i.e. cucumbers, carrots, avocados, etc.). The Large Spicy order comes with 6 mini packets of seaweed / nori and you can just take a piece of seaweed, scoop the hot box with a spoon (there's a layer of the california roll mix and another layer of white rice) into your seaweed, roll it like a taco and CHOMP! Afraid this is too complicated? It really isn't and everything you need to know is included in your kit. I am completely in love with this meal and can't wait to go back again and again. Even starting to write this review makes me want to order Hot Box Sushi for dinner this week! I don't know what makes this so addicting but thinking about it makes me crave it! When I first heard about this a few months ago, I figured I'd give it a try because pick-up was about 10 minutes from my house. I'm not really a big fan of California rolls and figured this would be pretty similar since it's a rice, crab, and mayo combo. I'm not sure if it's the spicy mayo or the fact that it's warm, but I was pleasantly surprised how delicious this is and have ordered it many times again! Ordering is easy, you can do it on their website or DM the owner via Instagram. Pick up is also super easy. The owner has a cooler outside her house where she keeps your order, just let her know the date and time you're picking up. This sushi casserole is ready after a quick 15 minute warm-up in your oven. We've only ordered the spicy large and while it says it can feed 3-4, my husband and I have definitely polished it off the entire large portion between the two of us. This is a great option to get you out of your standard sushi rut! It's fresh, delicious, and I can guarantee you'll be back for more! This is especially a great dinner if you have small kids and can barely find time to sit down and eat. I'll warm up the tray of this and set it out with the nori pieces so that my husband and I can tend to the kids and all their shenanigans but also grab bites of this here and there throughout the evening. My only comment for improvement is that it would be great if you got sliced cucumber (or other veggies) and avocado with your kit! read more

Ahhhhmazing. We heard about Hot Box from a friend who was raving so we tried it and were blown away. Had so many cravings after that for Hot Box and ended up ordering a second time. It was even better. Pick up is super easy & you just have to warm it up in your oven for 15 min. Perfect as an appetizer when you have people over. The small is for 1-2ppm snd the large we had for about 5 people as an appetizer. Years ago we went to Hawaii and they had baked sushi. It melted in our mouths & this definitely reminds us of that! HUGE Hot Box Sushi fan!!! I've brought this to 2 small gatherings and people are amazing by this wonderful creation there's been absolutely 0 leftovers both times. The boxes come with plenty of nori which is great so you don't have to buy it yourself! We add sliced avocado, jalapeño and cucumber to ours as we make it. This is so good, you have to try it. You do have to order ahead and pick up in Northbrook, but if you can manage to do that, come home and pop it in the oven for a bit, you're rewarded with the yummiest make your own sushi tacos you've ever had. I don't even like seaweed on my sushi, but this is the crunchiest, most delicious seaweed I've ever eaten and the salty goodness pairs with the sweet crabmeat and Mayo in the most delicious way. It's also super family friendly and my kids devour it each time we get it.
