This is kind of a tough one for me because we got VERY spoiled by a ramen restaurant in Austin Texas that no other has come close to and it's hard to not compare every other bowl of ramen to it. The thing all these other places seem to be missing is the abundant supply of add ins. Fun things like fried Brussel sprouts (to die for!) and various spice bombs. I was able to request some spice for my ramen after trying it (it really needed a little something) and it was ok. I ended up taking quite a bit of it home, which the hubs had left over the next day and reported it was Much better as left over. The service was fantastic and the atmosphere was lovely. Would definitely be willing to give it another shot. Much MUCH better than the several attempts at trying ramen here in Morgantown for sure. My boyfriend and I just got back from a trip to Asia and we're craving some good ramen. Unfortunately they don't have tonkatsu ramen (and looks like nowhere in Pittsburgh does yet- sigh), but they had some other good choices to satisfy the craving. I got the curry raksa ramen and my boyfriend built his own with the spicy miso base. Both of our bowls were flavorful, not salty, just deep flavor. The bowls are huge, so definitely worth the money. Noodles were good, not to over cooked which a lot of ramen places tend to do. We will definitely go back and would get the same two ramens! Docking a star because they don't have tonkatsu ramen. Stopped in for lunch at the Ramen Bar due to good Yelp reviews - so glad that we did. They are set up for social distancing with partitions between tables and at the group table. Quick service-food was amazing! We had the vegetable gyoza for an appetizer-nice size serving and they were the best I have had. I've had a lot of Ramen in my days. This ramen didn't particularly stick out to me with the first impression. However, there were a few aspects that I really enjoyed. One, Ramen Bar did not include MSG in the ramen. While it was not bursting with that signature salty taste, it was still good. Also, they were very generous with the veggies (noodles too!). Lastly, they provided pictures on the menu, so you can really understand what you're ordering. Other factors - there was a busy atmosphere about the restaurant, the wait staff was friendly and quick as well, it's a nice place for conversation, and Ramen Bar can seat both small and large groups! Sometimes you get that perfect meal coupled with the perfect dining experience. My most recent outing here I'd say qualifies. I had just balled, poorly I might add, and needed some hydration. The broth, the curry flavor, and most importantly, the noodles were so nourishing and very pleasantly tickled and massaged my digestive tract. Evening weather was perfect and the setting was calm and quiet. My server also recognized me and was rather jubilant upon my return. Sometimes you don't need an extravagant fine dining experience to earn 5 stars. Just good tasty food that, in this case went down perfectly, a pleasant setting, good service, and very reasonable pricing. I thoroughly enjoyed dinner here on a Sunday night for 2 reasons: First, the extra high counter seating. It's awkwardly high while you're waiting for your food, but when a giant bowl of ramen appears before you, the minimal distance from food-to-mouth suddenly becomes a source of great comfort. It's so hard for me not to go to Ramen Bar every day for dinner, I love it so much! The employees are all so friendly and check on you often for water, etc. I've never encountered a wait, but it's a smaller space and it's always fairly crowded. I always start my meal with some takoyaki. It's so delicious and seasoned perfectly with sauces and bonito flakes. I love all of their ramen choices--you can either make your own or order one of theirs. I usually get either the kimchi udon or tom yum men. There are a decent amount of vegetarian options, and I'm sure they have other ways of accommodating diets that aren't explicitly on the menu. My Ayo Ramen was filled with noodles prepared to order and delicious ingredients. This was definitely not your usual thought of commercial, freeze dried ramen. The soup was hearty, tasty, and more than enough for a big meal. My boyfriend got the Korean Kimchi Udon to mix it up and since he enjoys a little spice. Please - try the tan tan men. Ramen Bar is located right on Forbes Avenue in the middle of squirrel hill, so parking can be tricky sometimes. Fortunately, I work around the corner and would be able to frequent here often. I write this review with my mouth watering thinking about the tan tan men mentioned above. When at full capacity, the restaurant holds about 8-10 tables and then a large square table that holds a large party or several small groups. The food always comes out fast (and piping hot), so you never have to really worry about a wait. They offer apps like takoyaki, seaweed salad, potstickers etc. and then a variety of noodle and soup dishes, with a BYO option. As mentioned, I always steer toward the tan tan men and have brought no less than 50 people to try it for the first time. It is ramen in a spicy sesame broth with spinach and ground beef. It doesn't sound like much, but the broth is out of this world - spicy, tangy, sweet, all of the flavors. I like to add wonton and egg to mine. People are always surprised at how good it is and I have returned with the vast majority of them to eat it again! Haters will say it isn't authentic or how they are used to it, but I don't care - it is THE BEST. Service is always quick and friendly. The people here are great. They do takeout, which is still quite good, but is never exactly the same as receiving it hot and fresh right from the kitchen. BYO as well. read more

This is my favorite place for ramen in Pittsburgh!! A couple friends and I went for ramen on Sunday evening and sat outside. We started with the pork gyoza. I did the build your own ramen and got the spicy shoyu (hot & spicy) base with the negi ramen. Highly recommend adding wonton to the ramen if you are a wonton fan! The cold noodle is surprisingly good. There are many fresh vegetables. The sauce is sweet and sour, made with sesame sauce. The takoyaki is also what i expected, crispy and many bonito flakes/kezu ri bushi. It is fun watching the flakes dancing. The Tom yum men is ok. Big portion, but they are using frozen vegetable. I ordered some pot stickers and the Curry Ramen. The pot stickers were amazing. Such a great flavor, the perfect combination of a sweet and meaty taste. They came six to an order and they were a big six. The Curry Ramen was very good. The broth was delicious even if I was expecting it to be a little spicier. But while it was not spicy it was still flavorful. The pork was done perfectly and plenty of it in the bowl! No skimping around here! So good that I came to Ramen Bar three times in a row - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Staff is very friendly and are more than happy to explain the menu and provide recommendations especially if you're a first time Ramen Bar visitor, and food comes out very quickly, and the quality is great. During my visits to Ramen Bar, I tried the following dishes: Friday - Takoyaki, Wonton Men with a spicy shouyu broth plus corn and an egg, Saturday - Vegetable Ramen with a spicy shouyu broth alongside Japanese Fried Rice. Sunday - Kim Chi Udon. The takoyaki arrived piping hot, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a squid flavoring - a perfect appetizer to accompany a giant bowl of ramen. The Japanese fried rice with chicken was also freshly prepared and outstanding - much better than the typical fried rice one would get from a takeout Chinese restaurant - it was very similar to hibachi styled fried rice. The spicy shouyu broth is flavorful and definitely worth trying if you want a light, yet hearty broth. It has a nice heat to it that very slowly builds on you as you eat - perfect thing to get if you're coming down with a cold. The pork wontons in my Wonton Men were lightly filled with pork, and the ramen noodles were fresh, perfectly cooked, and remained al dente throughout my entire meal. The roasted pork was very soft and flavorful, and the addition of the egg with runny yolk adds a new level the giant bowl of flavors. The menu offers a large selection of items so it's almost impossible to get tired of this place, especially with all of the different ingredients you can add to the ramen. read more

FAVORITE ramen place in Pittsburgh (also in general-this is the best ramen I've ever had). I get the tan tan men ramen and I add tofu, fried garlic, mushrooms, and an egg. The flavors are so amazing and everything tastes so fresh and authentic. I usually have a lot of broth leftover so I bring it home and add more noodles the next day with a soft boiled egg (so two meals for the price of one)! All of the servers are so nice and the food always comes out very quickly. I came here with my husband, as we were in search of something hot and comforting on a cold day. He'd been here several times before, and I wish I had just ordered the same thing he did: the spicy shoyu ramen with extra noodles. I myself opted for the ajo ramen. It didn't quite have enough flavor impact for me, so I kept stealing spoonfuls of broth from my husband's bowl and lading it into mine. I liked his so much, in fact, that when I had a bad cold a week later, he stopped and picked up some for me. It was perfect for that comforting, warming feel. The space itself is pretty small, so I think it's safe to say that unless you come at an off time, expect a wait for a table to open up. Service was pretty prompt and no-fuss. Decor wasn't particularly memorable, but I have a feeling that it's because you're there for the food, amirite? Also, I thought the prices were very reasonable for how much you get--the bowls are enormous, so it was easy for us to get a second meal out of it. I stopped by here a couple of Saturdays ago with my wife for dinner. We arrived around at 7:15 to find the restaurant absolutely packed and we were told it would be a 10-15 minute wait. The inside of Ramen Bar is fairly tiny (seating for 34 at normal tables and a large community table that can seat 14) with tile floors and a ramen "mummy" caricature drawn on one wall and a picture of a large Asian city (Tokyo's Shibuya Center?) on the other. The temperature was in the single digits, so anytime the door was opened a blast of cold air reached our table and probably most of the tables in the restaurant. For dinner on this evening my wife and I decided to split the takoyaki for an appetizer and then I went with the ajo ramen for my entree. Our appetizer came out first and consisted of the fried octopus balls covered in bonito flakes amongst other things. They actually had enough other stuff on them that the balls themselves were hard to see. That didn't really matter though and my wife and I dug in. The takoyaki was rather tasty and was crispy on the outside and then soft and chewy in the middle. My wife and I quickly polished them off and within a short time our ramen arrived. It was piping hot which was nice as it counteracted any of the cold that was let in by the door. As a matter of a fact I was left sweating by the time that I had finished my meal. The ramen had a really good flavor to it which mainly consisted of garlic and pork. My favorite part of it ended up being the crispy garlic which was still tasty even after it got soggy in the broth. The only complaint I had was that on the menu it was marked as a spicy dish (a pepper next to it) and while I noticed a few red pepper flakes floating around in it I got no heat from it at all. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. My wife and I both enjoyed our meals here a lot and I am looking forward to trying more of their ramen dishes. read more

This was my second time trying ramen, woohoo! We were seated immediately (at a big bar table with other people). I didn't know what to think of that at first, but it still felt pretty intimate. Within minutes of ordering, our food came out too. There are so many options! The portion sizes are very generous too. I ordered my ramen with shrimp. The only downside was that the shrimp was basically just thrown on top (with the tails) so it didn't have much flavor and it was a little hard to eat with chop sticks. Overall, this place is SO good. Ordered spicy shoyu ramen with chasu, egg, and fried garlic and it may have been the worst restaurant ramen I've ever eaten. It came out fast, as in too fast. As in, I ordered it and I had it in front of me within 6 minutes. The pork was cut into thick chunks which were cold at their core. The meat was also essentially flavorless. The noodles were somehow both slimy and chewy, and the egg was just a hard boiled egg. The "fried garlic" were sticky, chewy, and stale. At least they had flavor. All in all, I spent $15 + tip on an absolute mess of a meal that I would recommend to exactly nobody. read more

Very fresh and flavorful with a sweet dipping sauce, came out right away. For soup I actually went with the Udon Japanese soup because the clear veggie broth with broccoli, shiitake mushrooms, carrots, green and white onions was calling my name. Soup came out piping hot and the udon noodles were so fresh, thick and delicious. So tasty and vegan friendly! Only qualm udon noodles are tough to eat in soup because they're so heavy, definitely prefer udon stir fry, lesson learned. Excited to come back and give the ramen a try. Came here for my friend's birthday! I ordered the Tan Tan Men, ramen in sesame soup with spinach and ground beef. Last time I visited, I also ordered the Tan Tan Men, so I can say that overall taste remains consistent across visits. I really like the soup base flavor of the Tan Tan Men and the noodles are good too. I would probably add vegetables next time or order edmame on the side if I were to get the Tan Tan Men again since the original order itself doesn't have a lot of veggies.
