Ginger Chicken
Abby G.

Ugh. I ate here when I first moved to Pittsburgh years ago and I found the food to be mediocre. For a place with the word "dumpling" in their name, the menu was shockingly devoid of dumplings. Its been a long time and I was craving some basic Chinese food, so I thought I'd order some takeout. It was terrible. The wonton soup was too salty, the shrimp dumplings tasted like chum and I'm not sure what ginger chicken is, but this dish did not taste of ginger and was mostly carrots and green beans. The vegetable mushu was ok. But everything else was awful.

Beef with Mixed Vegetable, Shrimp Fried Rice with extra onions!!

So I've been coming to Squirrel Hill for decades getting takeout , been living in the neighborhood for the last year now just sticking to my familiar spots like Sichuan House and Howlee but tonight I gave New Dumpling house a try and they DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! Service was accurate and prompt!! Portions are very generous for the price!! Delivery was lightning fast , although i live right down the street lol! I had my dinner in 15mins!! I just found my new favorite spot!!

Vegetable Tempura

No-fuss takeout with love put into the packaging. The sushi was fresh and the lunch prices made everything really accessible. The packaging had thick cardboard between some items to ensure that nothing is squished or overturned. Lots of vegan and vegetarian roll options to choose from. The vegetable tempura has thick batter and doesn't travel well. Will happily order from here again for a quick veggie sushi fix!

Chicken filling for dumplings

It has been a long time since I've order Chinese food. Tonight, I scanned through a list Chinese places with cheap food and settled on the New Dumpling and Sushi House. I didn't get their sushi, but tried the chicken fried dumplings and egg roll. The dumplings are an awesome portion for the price. You get 6 for $6.95 if you order directly, and they are quite heavy! Their casing/shell is very thick, which may not be appealing to everyone. I personally prefer a thinner casing but this does make the dumplings more filling. However, they don't skimp on the chicken filling either. And, that filling is delicious! I could honestly just eat the filling without the case. Recommend this dish. 4/5 The egg roll was not my favorite. It is very large and cheap, but is quite heavy on the cabbage flavor. I would have liked more other vegetables. However, it was fried well. 2.5/5 I wish their menu described how many sauces are served with the dumplings. I thought they only served soy sauce, but they also give you a special dumpling sauce, mustard, and duck sauce. My favorite out of all is the duck sauce. It's sweet and they give you about 3 pouches. You get 1 pouch of mustard, which is too acidic and not my favorite. Their dumpling sauce seems to be homemade, and it's a good balance of salty and sweet. You also get 3 packets or so of soy sauce. No need to spend an extra 50 cents on sauce orders! And of course, they give you fortune cookies (a whole 3 for my order). All in all, their dumplings are definitely pretty great. The portion is fantastic for the price, and they are filling (probably enough for a meal if you're not too hungry). Egg roll is meh. They give you loads of sauce! I recommend this place if you want cheap Chinese food or cheap dumplings, but it's not the best in the area.

Imperial dumplings

With so many different Chinese restaurants in the area to choose from, it can be difficult to decide which to go to. New Dumpling provides a good range of different kinds to choose from, some of which I have never tried before! I've listed my opinions about a few below but we ordered quite a few and I can't remember them all (sorry!): Imperial dumpling - the skin was on the thicker side and provided a doughy tasty foundation for the sauce. The sauce was incredibly thick and tasted very nutty, I'd have to guess a very strong savory-sweet peanut kind of flavor. I think the sauce definitely lifted this dish up, but at the same time made it feel very heavy. I was always trying to find that right balance. Shrimp dumplings - skins were also on the thicker side. As a result it feels a bit doughy as I chew, and I think the shrimp filling can have more seasoning. It tasted slightly on the blander side. Overall, I think it's worth trying the different selections of dishes and dumplings that New Dumpling offers as there were some I've never had, but I felt that the balance of flavors weren't quite right for me, and I was in a state of adding flavor with their delicious sauces but risking feeling weighed down by their richness. Perhaps it's the more Northern style of dumplings with thicker skins that I'm not as acquainted or just how rich their sauces were. Although the flavors didn't quite fit my palate, it's worth trying to see if you'd enjoy for yourself!

To go area for pick up

Good Chinese take away. Superiority dumplings! No wonder this is a Pittsburgh staple for so many years in the highly competitive main drag of Squirrel Hill.

Worst food we've ever had. We were traveling and staying at a hotel nearby and decided to try this place. Total regrets

Not horrible, just doesn't taste super great and not very fresh. I liked the veggie dumplings which is why this isn't a 0 star.

I asked our waiter if the portion size of chirashi was good and he said it's a good size and that they have carry out boxes if I don't finish. Tell me why this was the smallest chirashi I have ever seen anywhere. The slices of fish were thinner than the sliced ginger. If you stacked all of the slices, it would make a normal size of one piece of nigiri. The slice of tuna was so thin, you could see through it, much less taste it. I was still starving after and got the fried chicken nuggets which were a good portion, with good crunch. The sauce on the chicken was devoid of flavor except for the SALT. They were even able to take the chicken flavor away from the meat which is kind of an accomplishment in itself. My friend got the Sichuan pork dumplings and the dumplings were drowning in soy sauce so much so that you couldn't taste the Sichuan spice (if there was any). There's a sushi restaurant nearby that gives me food poisoning every time I eat there and I would have much rather have eaten there than Soba. I would definitely recommend this place to my enemies because they'll leave broke and still hungry.

Both delicious. The 17 ingredient salad is highly recommended and we could tell why. So refreshing and flavorful. It was fun finding all of the 17 ingredients. Beautiful restaurant, indoor and outdoor. I think next time we visit, we will have a later reservation outside to enjoy the greenery. Make a reservation at least a month in advance!! I know that I would've enjoyed my experience much more if we could've sat in the garden, that's probably an excellent vibe. I'm a spicy marg lover so I tried-new person same old mistakes-it didn't really strike me as spicy but more so smoky and I wanted spicy. We did the khao yum-it was unique, I think I would really have loved this. If it was hot out it seems like it would be very refreshing and light and more ideal for the spring and summer and like I said we went in the dead of winter. I did the beef tenderloin as my main and it was good, it wasn't too spicy, had a nice flavor, but I don't know that I would order it again. If it wasn't so hard to get a reservation, I would definitely come here more. I really liked the vibe and the aesthetic.

I wouldn't really call this a supper club to be honest but the place definitely carries a house music bar vibe and the back bar area and seating is very dimly lit, perfect for cozying up and enjoying a drink late night. The ladies' room was so dark, I mistook it for a storage area because I could only make out a white ladder in the corner that was being used as cute shelving. The place is seat yourself. Our waiter was not super friendly and didn't offer to give us napkins or anything when our wobbly table caused our drinks to splash all over the place. The cook served our chicken with a big smile and happy interaction and we really loved his personality. The bartender also stopped by to bus our table and he was very pleasant as well. We enjoyed the perfectly fried small plate cauliflower with the plum sauce and the fried cheese/garlic wonton bites with the sriracha mayo spicy dipping sauce. The fried chicken breast on the large plate was slightly overcooked with a maple gochuchang sauce that was very bland. We were so thankful that the large plate fried chicken came with a side salad to offer some respite from the heaviness of the fried dishes. It would have been great to have some side acidic or fresh vegetable options like Kimchi or something. Maybe we tried the wrong dishes and there are other not fried things that are delicious? The dirty martini cocktail was just so-so, not really much flavor at all, but the mojito was very good and refreshing. It's probably a good late-night place for a bite and drink.

Seated via Resy Reservations…read more Food & Drink: 4 / 5 - Mixed Drink - Matcha Muse: I know....more "Matcha", but hear me out. This was a combination that I did not expect to actually work, but it does. The bartender does an amazing job that very few in my experience have been able to do, which is blend the drink to where it is not just 90% alcohol and 10% whatever else. This allows you to really experience the drink and its fancy little name. Food: Entree - Godzilla: This was recommended by my waiter at the time because it was the first time ever that I have tried sushi and I was not disappointed. This dish was sooooo delicious. Dessert - Churro Cheesecake: What can I say? It's cheesecake and churros. Not a big fan of sweets, but I do love me a good cheesecake. Service: 5 / 5 - No complaints. Waiter was very attentive and made sure to check in periodically. He was very passionate about his job and provided strong recommendations with his opinion on the choices when asked. When he found out that this was my first time having sushi, he took the time to explain how the menu works, which I have horrible memory, but appreciate deeply. Wouldn't mind having him as a regular waiter in the future. Vibe: 4 / 5 - Restaurant and food presentation is very pretty, clean and aim to provide you with that "fancy restaurant" experience, that so many people have come to expect. It's a very chill vibe and lighting is not bad at all. Overall: 4 / 5 - Normally, I have a rule that I don't have ocean related dishes in an area where the ocean is not readily accessible. However, an acquaintance once said, "you have to have several mid dishes before you enjoy a really good dish" and she was right. Although, I wouldn't call social house mid. I enjoyed my experience overall and the staff was very friendly. The cost-food value is on the higher end, but in my opinion it was worth it.
