I used to go there all the time, but now the "manager" sucks. This is one of the worst run places I've ever seen. Poorly run, and some of the worst bartenders I've seen. This can be a fun bar, and it's right around the corner from my friend's house, so incredibly convenient, but its always felt to me like a paler copy of its older sister bar Rory Dolan's, which is just up the street and (barely) over the city line in Yonkers. The food not quite as fresh/tasty, the beer list not quite as interesting, the drinks not mixed quite as expertly... kind of like the bar equivalent of shopping at Nordstrom Rack. Still, its geographically convenient, not just for my friend, but its also a reasonably short stumble compared to other Woodlawn bars such as Rory's to either the Metro North or a bus/subway back downtown. And its an Irish bar, so, you know you'll receive prompt and proper bar serivce. I'd personally recommend more for an early evening pint than for a late night hang... they tend to have loud, mediocre house bands or "professional" DJs on weekend nights that obliterate any chance of enjoyable conversation. Also, not sure if this still transpires, but I've been here a couple of times in the past where, all of a sudden at midnight, people magically start lighting up their smokes en masse inside the bar without incident. I imagine they have/had some kind of wink-wink agreement with local authorities that this was acceptable, but as someone who has adapted quite nicely to NY's smoke-free bar regulations, it was an unwelcome development. So if you're a fan of loud music (in a bar) AND smoking, well... I guess you're cooler and more badass than me. But if you're not, well... just be advised. read more

The best French onion soup I've ever had in my life. The owners came around to our table multiple times just to say hi and to make sure everything was good. I had corned beef and cabbage and it was okay. I should have went with the Shepard's pie. But I live and I learn. My husband and I stopped in for dinner. He ordered the Sheppard's Pie and I ordered the Fish & Chips. Everything was absolutely awful. The Sheppard's pie had an overpowering taste of garlic. The taste of garlic was so bad the taste of mashed potatoes was nonexistent. However, as bad as the sheppard's pie was, nothing was as bad as the fish and chips. I don't know what kind of fish was used but it was not cod or haddock or any other white fish for that matter. The small pieces I was able to find in between the fried batter were gray and had a faint taste of chemical. Definitely did not taste fresh. Rambling House used to be one of my favorite late night hangout spots. The menu and quality of food have changed since the last time I visited. This was my first visit to Rambling House. I was visiting town for the funeral of my friend's dad. My friend had been here with his dad a few times and suggested it as we headed back to Westchester from Brooklyn. There was a good crowd. It was Saturday so I'm assuming that's normal. It was a pretty young crowd, everyone seemed to be having a good time. The bartender was great, right on the spot without me having to do more than nod. Prices were reasonable. I met the owner, a nice older gentleman. He gave his condolences to my friend about his dad. I will make it a point to try to visit when I'm in NY in the future. read more

They were very efficient in executing the seating, food preparation, serving and all other requests we had. Staff was very accommodating and did a great job setting everything up. I love Rambling House. It's about a block and a half from one of my friends' apartments, and every time a group of us is in the city at the same time, we all seem to gravitate back here because it's just so damn good. I love the Gaelic Burger with Guinness cheese. SO damn good. Wash it down with a Magners' and it's fantastic. They do make some good toasted almonds too. The first time we all came here, we ate out in the bar area, and it was kind of dark, the 2nd time, we ate in a side room that was more dining room-esque. i was surprised to find an Irish Pub still in the Bronx. It was a great find by my son in law. The two of us and my grandkids (they love Irish Pubs) went for dinner as my daughter was working. A lively noise Irish Pub. Everyone is having fun, a great fun-group singing in their beers. The food was good , the beer cold and the waitstaff was outstanding . Just like a Ireland local pub. We ate inside because the smoking area was right next to the outdoor eating area and it was not very pleasent. That was the only thing stopping me from giving it a 5* reveiw. Stopped by on a Friday night with the husband and it wasn't bad at all. The sampler platter is good, not spectacular, just good. I got the buffalo wrap, had it not been for the sampler, def would've ate the whole thing. The husband got the steak and won't lie, but it was legit. Tasty, cooked just right and the sides were good too. I can't complain about the food, they all came out in a timely manner and hot as well, not like they were sitting around waiting to be served to us. Place was very decorated for St Patrick's Day. They had a DJ and a special menu. We didn't stay long enough for it, but they had a joke St Patrick's Day Parade that lasted for 1 minute between 6:29pm and 6:30pm. Nice sense of humor... They have three separate rooms, one a main hall with a center island bar, then two conjoined dining rooms each with a side bar. It's clear they grew into this space one room at a time and they say you can rent out the dining rooms for any sort of private event that you might think of. They have lots of beer taps but it is a lot of boring stuff, all the way down to Carlsberg. They did have Harp and Guinness so I had a Black and Tan. Food wise the shepherd's pie was really great. My wife got a beef dish (something something mushroom sauce) which was unremarkable. My friend got a traditional corned beef and cabbage which, more than anything, was enormous. I had a few bites of it and it seemed satisfying. The vibe is very family style. Not a lot of rowdy drunk people trying to make a scene, and even the younger people in the room were generally respectful (probably cause on St Paddy's day, they know that someone their family knows is watching, so better behave...) If I ever make it back up to this area, I'd be curious to see what it's like on a normal night! read more

You may think this is just your average Irish Pub, but it is so much more! I hosted my daughter's birthday party here Saturday afternoon and the party was a huge success! Tara and her team transformed the "Blue Room" into a beautiful space that was set up perfectly for a dance party. They were welcoming and attentive to everyone's needs. Many guests had dietary restrictions and Tara's suggested menu assured that every guest would be happy with their choices! The vegetable quiche was delicious, a crisp crust loaded with eggs and veggies. The salmon was fresh and cooked to perfection. I will admit that I had concerns about ordering a pasta dish from an Irish bar but, the penne vodka was a hit! Joe, the bartender was friendly and went out of his way to make sure everyone at the bar had a drink in hand, and our waitress, Roisin was just as attentive with the needs of every guest in attendance. Do not be fooled by the name of this place. It is much more than a Bar-Restaurant. If you book a party here you can be sure to receive the quality of service you would get at a "fine" catering hall! For many, this is their first place they visit in Woodlawn. Having been to a few places around here, I feel like this place is the best that Woodlawn can offer. Good selection of beers, outdoor seating, a welcoming vibe. Usually go here on weekdays after work, and it certainly is a great place for a beer and apps. On Saturdays, the crowd is different and the music is way too loud, but that's expected, I just end up going to quieter places on McLean. The food is mediocre, but it's bar food... I'm orginally from the Bronx and I never knew there was a "Little Ireland". I have so many ties to the Woodlawn area, it's not even funny. I was born at Montefiore Hospital. My grandmother lives east off of 233rd Street. My mother is laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery. My aunt & uncle live on Gun Hill Road. You get the picture I'm sure. I was at Woodlawn Cemetery visiting my birth mom and my adopted grandmother's graves and the family went to Rambling House for lunch soon after. I can ONLY imagine the sight to see one soul brother sitting at a long table with 12 Irish-Catholics outside this place. My adopted family members are pretty cool. The atmosphere of Rambling House was so alive. Everyone working there or just walking by on their cellphones had strong & pure Irish accents. It was so fitting and true to this area. It was a very nice day and I have to concur with Madeline L's review about being here. Granted it was a day of sorrow and not the party scene but you know...I want to party here. I was going to order a Jameson shot or a pint of Guinness because love them soooo much but I would've been the only one drinking and I didn't want to "stand out"... Honestly, I felt like I was Anthony Anderson's stunt double on the Departed film set because it was THAT Irish around me. Of course, I keep it real with the Irish Sausage, Mash and Baked Beans. At $9, it was worth every penny. The sausage is locally made a couple of blocks away. They are small since they're not British bangers but they were really, really good. Juicy with a crisp skin. My little sister ordered their Penne Ala Vodka with Italian Sausage AND chunks of smoked mozzarella all over it. I tasted that and Willis likes it very much. Of course they have the Irish staple Fish & Chips, Shepherd's Pie, Lamb Stew, Corned Beef & Cabbage and other traditional fare. This is purgatory and I love it. Seriously. I love a train-wreck. Where else can you get barraged by an incomprehensible Irishman, an incoherent construction worker, an off-duty cop, sloppy dancing college girls, and random "thugs" while listening to a cover band play Bon Jovi all at the same time? No where. Need a place to snort your blow at 3 in the am? Want to have an afternoon drink while children run around wildly unattended? Need a place to watch couples fight and argue to the brink of violence? Got a hankering for the Amish Outlaws? Want to see a fat guy pee himself? This is the place. Other than that, I devour the steak sandwich with the amazingly awesome Adobe mayonnaise. The calamari is pretty damn awesome, as well. In any event, you have to come here if you like perfectly poured Guinness, real Irish food and well actual Irish people (none of those plastic paddies). I fortunately have many family members in this neighborhood and visit often. When here I enjoy a trip to the Rambling House. This place is only good for drinks. Do NOT eat here. Unless you have all the time in the world, have no taste buds, and/or are trashed. Start the clock... 7:05 PM we parked in the free after 7 street parking. We originally planned to eat somewhere else but were enticed by their outdoor seating. We were promptly seated. Before I could blink, my beer was here! Then it went downhill... We waited for about 20 minutes before anyone returned to take our order. We ordered the chicken wing appetizer and salad. Pleasant conversation wile the hours away... BUT 8PM and still no sign of our food. We ask about it... And get attitude! After 40 minutes of waiting for some of the simplest things on the menu, I should think it was worth asking. The waitress then apologizes then gets the manager who also apologizes and offers free dessert... Hard to think about dessert when you're still waiting for your main food. The food comes out shortly... The chicken wings are COLD and hence not tasty. Salad was average. At this point, we just want to get out of there. The apology tiramisu comes relatively promptly- but is bland. While the dessert was an appreciated gesture of apology, it just didn't make up for a evening spoiled by a longer than planned dinner with unappealing food. read more

Rambling House is an awesome pub on the Katonah Avenue strip. To begin, the establishment is roomy (compared to say, pubs in Manhattan) and lively, even early on a Saturday evening but you never feel too overwhelmed by crowds. Platters of food will buzz by your head as you choose which drink to order. I didn't order anything but nachos, but those were some pretty tasty nachos with lots of ooey, gooey cheese. But let's get to the meat (or not) of the review: the drinks! Rambling House has to be the most affordable alcoholic beverage establishment I have ever visited. We're talking like $5 for a Bacardi and Coke, and the beers aren't expensive either. Because of the affordability of the drinks, at least I assume so, everyone is in a jovial mood. Yelp let me down on this one. I'm SHOCKED this place has 4 stars. This was not a great experience. We sent our appetizer back and the rest of it was barely edible. We ordered: Spinach and Artichoke Dip: This was the strangest dip I've ever seen. It was pureed and had the color and consistency of split pea soup. I really wish I had taken a picture of it. I've never seen anything like it. The grossest part was that I found a soggy chip at the bottom of it, like the dip was recycled. Gaelic Burger: Decent, not great. Ordered medium rare and got a well done burger. Nachos: Chips, canned chicken and a greasy cheddar cheese sauce. The sour cream that came with it looked like it was taken from someone else's empty plate. Our server was amazing. I hate to complain about meals (especially since the issues came from the kitchen, not her), but she was friendly and super helpful, and notified the manager of our issue right away, without us asking. The best part about this place is the price of the drinks. Smithwicks pints are $4.50 and cocktails are $5. ***Also, be advised that the photo of the cockroach that is in the photo section was NOT found in this restaurant. I was lucky. My friends are regulars here. We drank for literally hours, how I even remember being here is a miracle. The place is huge, has all kinds of tvs, an internet jukebox. The bar is huge, there are many tables. The Guinness is just right, as are all of the beers. The food was really good too. Usually come to grab a bite at Rambling House on the weekends. The food is solid for the most part, but can be inconsistent. I'm a fan of anything and everything buffalo and ordered their Buffalo Crunch Wrap. Th wrap was heavenly the first time and then not so much the few other times i ordered in hopes that it'd be as good as the first time i tried it. The chipotle chicken wrap has the right flavors but not enough melted cheese - please melt the cheddar all the way through, please. I will say, that staff is always very nice and attentive and that keeps me coming back, as does the desire to have another heavenly buffalo chicken wrap one day. read more
