Rainforest Cafes are all a fun, immersive dining experience and this San Antonio location absolutely delivered just that. It was three-stories and each floor was covered in Jungle foliage and an assortment of animated animals, making it just as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. We made a reservation for 5:45 p.m. on a Saturday, and the place was absolutely packed. The line for walk-ins stretched out the door, with a wait time of 1 to 1.5 hours. When I checked in, the hostess, Shakira, let me know they were prepping our table. While we waited Jesus, an employee from the gift shop, stopped by to check in on us and ask how we were doing. Barely 10 minutes later, I received a text that our table was ready. As I walked up, a few people rushed ahead of me, but the hostess actually recognized me, stepped aside, and asked if I had received my notification. With how busy they were, I was genuinely impressed that she remembered me. Our table was tucked away into a corner, giving us plenty of space and a nice view. Our server, Daniel, greeted us within minutes, quickly got our drink orders started, and kept the service moving along all evening. We had several questions about the menu, and he answered every one on the spot. He recommended the Taste of the Islands with salmon instead of tilapia because I said I preferred salmon so I went with that and was not disappointed. The rest of my group ordered salads, pastas, and a peppered steak dish. Opinions on the food ranged from 2 to nearly 5 stars, so while not every dish was a home run, everyone found something to enjoy. The food alone probably would have earned a solid 4 stars, but Daniel's outstanding customer service elevated the entire experience to a 5-star visit. His knowledge of the menu, attentiveness, and genuine pride in his work made all the difference. Visited to celebrate my child's birthday and the dining experience was really cool. The decor is top notch. The visuals, sounds and lighting enhanced the experience. Our waitress (Jazelle) was A+. Lately I've been instantly closing my tab and leaving restaurants because I've been getting waiters (from other restaurants) who have already judged whether I would tip based off my race. I'm not going to stay and tolerate terrible, subpar service. Anyway, our waitress was kind and attentive. I ordered the blackened fish tacos and they were delicious! Here we go... I barely saw the server the entire time. The table was never cleared and I was never offered a drink refill. My son's kids menu didn't come with crayons, and we sat there waiting while tables that came in after us had their orders taken first. I had a stroller with me and was placed on the 3rd floor even though the elevator was out of order. I had to carry it up the stairs and was then told to move it by an employee with a snarky tone, which felt unnecessary and rude! My biggest issue was the food service. My parents' orders were completely wrong and my son never got the apple juice that came with his meal. When I asked for his drink to be made to-go I was given a large glass beer cup filled with apple juice and ice with no lid and told they don't have kids cups or to go cups. That makes absolutely no sense, was careless, and disrespectful! The food was good but it can't make up for service like this. I would not recommend eating here! read more

We all know the saying: Everything is bigger in Texas, and this restaurant is no exception. I remember visiting the Rainforest Cafe in Tempe in 2001 and maybe a couple years later. It's a fun experience, but nothing like this location. This building has three floors. I honestly couldn't tell you what's on the second floor because I was too busy taking pictures of all the jungle flora and fauna, but the first floor has the gift shop while the third hosts the restaurant. There are fish aquariums everywhere, with one sporting a ginormous tortoise. We were seated beside a different aquarium, which was no less ambient. There are also "rainstorms" every thirty minutes, adding depth to the immersive experience of roars, trumpets, whoops, and squeaks. Our server Samantha was prompt and patient as my husband and I both took in the animals and aquatic life. She also brought us water without us having to ask before taking our drink and appetizer orders. I forgot I'm not a fan of the spinach and artichoke dip, though I feel I can be forgiven since it's been over twenty years. It's not terrible, but I've had better. The chips are unsalted, and I don't want to say stale, but they don't have the airy, light texture I'm accustomed to in Arizona. I ordered the Amazon fajitas with chicken, which were pretty good. The black bean salsa threw me off but it wasn't bad. It also comes with the traditional cheese and sour cream with pico de gayo. And I ate as much as I could before bringing the rest home. My husband opted for fish and chips with the same story: great but couldn't finish. One thing that surprised us both though was the coleslaw with pineapple. It's one of the strangest foods I've eaten while being pleasantly sweet. Loved it and would order more. Or at least learn how to make it because that was good. Toward the end of our meal, a photographer came by to take our pictures and wish us happy Valentine's Day. This place is a little on the pricey side with nothing under $26 (mostly over $30), but it's worth it for the entertainment factor. We didn't buy anything from the gift shop, but it was a lot of fun to browse and reminisce about our young adult years and memories of Rainforest. There were things we commented on that we felt our kids would have loved when they were younger. I had a great time and might consider returning next year. In town for work and walked over from my hotel for lunch. (The entrance is actually on the Riverwalk so you have to go downstairs.) The seating was on tbe 3rd floor of the restaurant. I sat by a baboon and an elephant. LOL There was a nice specials menu but it had no prices! The waiter said everything was $26.99. There were a few things that sounded good but I went for the bruschetta chicken with shrimp scampi and fettuccine Alfredo. It was a huge portion. I also had a hurricane which was super strong. I couldn't drink all of it. My waiter was very attentive and apologized for not being able to give me a to go cup. He did offer me one of the souvenir glasses but I didn't want to be walking around with it. I did have a picture taken and I bought it from the photographer as a nice memento. We made reservations for my son's birthday. In the notes i asked if we could be near the snake since he LOVES snakes. They NAILED it! He had the most amazing view of the snake all through dinner. The hostess when we first arrived was amazing and interacted with my kids so well! I wish I got her name she was so wonderful! Their kids menu selection is great! My 3 kids all enjoyed their meals. Especially my son who can't have wheat. They accommodated him and were able to give him gluten-free pasta with the kids meal. Our server wasn't as wonderful as the hostess. When i asked about accommodations for the kids meal that seemed reasonable based on previous restaurants, she just said they couldn't do it. I asked for another and she responded the same way. I asked if she could double check and sure enough the manage came over and assured me they could easily accommodate the request. We did not receive refills on water and only the kids received refills on their drinks. Service was slow and scarce. My food was returned twice. It came out barely at room temp. When the new food came out, it was just a bit warmer but the steak was cooked well done instead of medium rare. He took the steak back immediately and returned with a perfectly cooked steak. They did remove my meal from our bill without us asking. I'd have to say the worst part was the bathroom though... the floor was sticky and smelled like old urine. When we first checked in, we were told there would be a 45-minute wait. We decided to wait and explored the gift shop, but were pleasantly surprised when we received a text informing us that our table was ready after only a 10-minute wait. There is so much to see on your way to the table. I love the rainforest ambiance and the animals. After being seated and placing our order, our waitress told us we could look around the room. I really enjoyed that because there was so much to see. The service and atmosphere were excellent, but the food varied in quality. I ordered the Beef Taco Salad, which was a large portion and delicious. It had olives and corn at the bottom of the taco bowl; if you're not a fan of olives, you might want to ask for them to be removed. I've never had olives in a taco salad before, but I really enjoyed it. Another person in my party ordered the Amazon Rainforest Burger, which they said was okay but would prefer a burger elsewhere. I tried the fries, and they seemed to have been sitting out for a while. However, someone else in our group ordered the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger and loved it. You go for the experience. I've been to Rainforest Cafe a couple of times in my life and I'll admit, it's pretty fun if you can get into the vibe. This location's pretty neat as it's right on the RiverWalk, but its atmosphere is just like the others I've been to. I will admit that the animatronics here looked a little worse for wear if you actually give them a good look, but they're still entertaining all the same. I will note that 1) if you're not a fan of loud noises or flickering lights this place may not be for you and 2) this location's bathrooms are either very clean or very not. The food is simply alright. Think sports bar quality. Again you go for the experience, not necessarily the meal. Their drinks are normally decent, but this last time I went my party and I agreed that they were very much watered down. The Volcano was my favorite part of the meal, but then again I'm a huge fan of dessert in general. All in all I'd say that if you're in the area and interested, give it a go. Touristy, as expected. This Rainforest Cafe location is very touristy, which is expected given the nature of the chain and the area. The prices are very high but the portions are large. Prices are high especially if you get the novelty cups and accessories. We had no problems with our order. The food was good, but not spectacular. This place is huge. It's three floors of jungle madness. If you're willing to push past the cheesiness, noise, and long wait, you might really enjoy this. This Rainforest Cafe feels very dated and clearly hasn't been updated in the past three decades. If you have a kid yourself, they would probably love this place though. I was...weirdly impressed by the Rainforest Cafe! As San Antonio local, we haven't been here since childhood but when searching for a place that might be open on Easter, for some reason all roads pointed here! We figured, why not, could be a fun story. The place was quite full considering the holiday, but we were sat right away on the top floor. Did I get immediately jump scared by an enormous snake? Yes. Did it stop my appetite? No. Propped right along a fish tank, our table got a server asap and our drinks as well as our appetizer was out in no time. Now here is where I became impressed, the Korean fried chicken wraps were crazy good! Not at all what I was expecting from a place like this. The taste of the islands was ok, but I think that was honestly just due to personal flavor preferences. We both ordered souvenir drinks which allow you to keep the glass cup and our server was kind enough to wash them out and wrap them up for us before leaving. They also recommended taking a stroll to the other floors to check out the decorations. I will admit, the thunderstorms and general noise level are...a lot. If you have sensory issues or prefer the quiet, this is not the place for you. But if you're willing to take a silly excursion and lean into the fun, I say it's a solid place to have a new experience! Also, a wildly random plus side for me and me alone, they have a penny press machine at the entrance. Not unique in itself, but one of the few left I have seen recently that still take quarter and your own penny rather than new machines that require a credit card and they force you to pay $5 for all 4 pennies. This Rainforest Cafe is located right on the San Antonio River Walk, which is super convenient and really pretty. We made reservations ahead of time, and even though the restaurant was basically empty when we arrived--maybe five or six tables occupied--they still made us wait past our reservation time. That was frustrating considering how many open tables there were. This location is also much smaller than the ones we're used to, and the atmosphere didn't feel as lively or exciting as other Rainforest Cafes we've visited. The service was okay--not terrible, but nothing special. Unfortunately, the food was the biggest disappointment. It just wasn't good. Every time we visit a Rainforest Cafe, the quality seems to go downhill, and this visit really confirmed that. For the price you pay, you expect something at least decent, but the food was mediocre at best. I thought it was overall a little bit to loud with all the weird animal sounds and recordings and the humidity was a little to high for comfort. We were seated very quickly but the one star is for absolutely horrible service. Five us sat for around 30 minutes without even having someone ask us for drinks. When one staff member realized the forget about us or didnt realize no one was serving us they apologized and said they would be right with us. 5-10 minutes later no one arrived. With the price of a plate 20$ish I would expect at least some service. We got up and walked out and not a single member of staff said a word to us. I would recommend going to McDonald's first. At least you get the service you pay for which is still better than this restaurant. read more

My wife and I are in town for a conference and for our first night we decided to go to the Rainforest Café. A bizarrely, interesting looking restaurant, they have animatronic animals, thunderstorms, and a lot of realistic noises that made for a very immersive experience. I wished I could say everything was as exciting as our first impression. The service we had was by far the slowest we've had in a good long time. The place was crazy busy however there were dozens of waitresses and no reason for us to have to wait as long as we did for literally everything. The lasagna I got was decent maybe a "B", and my wife's salad was also reasonable - at that level. The coconut shrimp we ordered for $10 had to have been the smallest and most uninteresting we've ever seen - to the point we sent them back. After our meal, it took almost 10 minutes to get our bill, another 10 minutes to get our receipts and then another 10 minutes to get the receipt fixed because my wife needed an itemized copy for work (which she knew because she had to split the check for us). Too noisy, *FAR* too slow, and the food just wasn't good enough for us to ever try this again. read more

This is really such a shame because the restaurant itself is very cool, the theme is fun, the food is pretty good. The reservation/seating process is horrible. I made a reservation because I had 2 small children with us. 30 minutes past my reservation I asked how much longer and they said we texted you and you didn't respond and we gave your table away. I literally scrolled up and down my phone showing them no text came through. (And throughout this process, I saw at least 3 other people come up and ask why they were waiting so long since they had a reservation. One of the hostesses told them they seat walk ins before reservations - how does that make any sense??) We heard other people saying the same thing - they never received a text. One do the hostesses tried to blame it on "too many people are connected to our WiFi so it jams the system." They then said they would seat me next so I literally stood by the hostess stand waiting. They then seated another party and I asked again, what about us and they said "what is your name? Who are you?" as if they didn't just talk to me 3 minutes ago. I felt like I was in the twilight zone. My infant daughter had had several meltdowns by now and I was on the verge of just leaving, but we had over tired kiddos who needed to eat. Finally we were seated upstairs, I was brought a dirty high chair for my baby. One of the staff members saw me pulling out my own wipes and walked over and apologized and wiped it off. Then we sat at our table for a good 15 minutes before being helped. The service was extremely slow - the servers were nice & friendly, but we were only checked on maybe twice. The bathrooms were a complete disaster, toilet paper strung everywhere. Oi, I should have known better than to come here for my first meal while in the area. But, I was hungry and needed something. It was so odd coming here. You enter on the Riverwalk and then have to go up to the third floor, or street level to get a table. When I got up there I was seated in an area that was easy to forget me. I was placed in a corner, behind a wall that almost had me hidden from all the staff. When I was seated I was told that someone would be over to greet me shortly. The hostess did her job and then I was left to wait. Service here was really shoddy. From the time I was sat down three other parties were sat. All those parties had servers come to their tables before me. I was about to get up and leave and a very flustered waiter finally approached me. I asked for a water and waited until he returned to place my order. I waited a solid ten minutes before my water even reached the table. I was about to place my order and the waiter walked away. I waited another five minutes until he returned again. In the meantime, the other parties, served by other waiters, already had their drinks and orders placed. I watched the whole time and got more agitated as the time ticked away. He finally returned and I placed my order for the Barbecue Bacon Burger in hopes that at least the food might get here soon. While I waited for my food to arrive I have to admit I have never been to a Rainforest Cafe to eat prior to this visit. I have gone into one or two just to look around and go to the shop, but never to eat. The gimmicky thunderstorm that rolls through was somewhat hilarious to watch. Especially when they set off the animals and small children are nearby. The fright was very real for those kids. While the fake thunderstorm subsided, I noticed one of the nearby tables that were in the same predicament as me were fed up and about to leave. When they were about to get up the staff finally jumped to action. But too little, too late. All they received were there drinks, much like me. However, as that was happening, my food finally showed up. The burger and fries weren't anything to write home about. The burger was quite messy. I only had the one napkin that I started the meal with and I was afraid to ask for a new one to only receive as I was leaving. Talking about leaving, when it was time to pay and leave, I ran into another waiting game. I got the check and had to wait for the waiter to come and get it. I am not lying when I say that I waited twenty minutes for them to return with my card. I would have just got up and left, but I needed my card for the remainder of the week. When the waiter finally came back with my check and card, he started to apologize for the service and told me that they were short staffed and there really wasn't any communication with the staffing. I could see that, I started off with one server and ended up with this one. Probably why I was forgotten so long at the start of this journey. Always fun at the rainforest cafe, whether you are dining here or shopping for souveniers. We used to have one in Southern California but it closed down years ago. I remember taking my kids there for lunch and dinner. This location is very convenient right on the Riverwalk. The cafe is beautiful but a bit dated. All things considered, when you go to a place like this, you know what to expect and it has yet to disappoint me and my seven-year-old. The food is overpriced, but the portions are at least decent. They have maintained the ambience and it is really fun and entertaining for kids. The service is great and the servers are really kind and hard-working. I do appreciate that you get the signature glasses when you buy the cocktails, it's fun to take a souvenir like that. It is fun for kids to explore the various levels of the restaurant and see all of the animals. This is a great place for kids on the Riverwalk, especially after a hot day. They can enjoy the air conditioning in the great rainforest ambience of the restaurant. We love this place. Kids get what they want. My wife was able to get her dietary restrictions met. I had the ribs and a coke! Fun atmosphere and I think we are doing something to improve the environment. The riverwalk is awesome and this place is right down there where all the action happens. I love this place. read more

Desiree Deserves a Raise Took the kids to Rainforest Cafe, fully expecting chaos, thunder noises, and at least one meltdown (possibly mine). Instead, we got Desiree -- the calm, friendly hero of the jungle. She kept drinks filled, food coming, and somehow managed to wrangle our attention away from the giant fake gorilla mid‑roar. The kids adored her, and honestly, so did I. If you go, ask for Desiree. She's the only person I've ever seen outsmart animatronic animals and hungry children at the same time. 100% Recommended. read more
