I came here yesterday after a long hiatus (my significant other lives in the Los Angeles area and visited; we love coming here so we decided to visit and rejoice in good memories). With that said, I have been coming here since I was in high school (now a doctoral student), and I can attest that things have gotten better. I recall years ago the food was often served colder than it should, tasted rather average, and took much longer to arrive. Since then, the quality and service has gradually been increasing. Yesterday was perhaps the culmination of the last 6-8 years of service: there was a line to enter, which moved incredibly quick compared to past years; we were seated in a not-so-ideal spot, yet continuously given the appropriate care by our waitress; and our food order (a full rack of 'mojo bones' to share plus the 'awesome appetizer') arrived quickly, yet was not cold. After paying, the manager even came over to make sure everything went smoothly (perhaps being a club member added to this, as he personally returned my club card while asking about the food and service). After so many years, I personally felt they really did do their best this time around-- and surprisingly during a heavy lunch/after-lunch period, as the restaurant well well-packed.
Of course, the review is a 4-star and not 5-star because the experience was not perfect (almost, but not quite). The 4 specific points that dissuaded a 5-star review follow:
1.) My significant other requested a water in addition to her favorite orange creamsicle-like drink at the beginning of our order, but this did not arrive until much later; and only after she requested it again. This may not seem important, but many of the drinks there have large amounts of sugar in it, so water is almost a necessity (I felt myself in need of some water after some time with my raspberry lemonade freeze). The drinks are delicious as always, but not bringing out that water (as minor as some may find this problem) is significant.
2.) With regard to the 'awesome appetizer' sampler, the quality of the chicken tenders is much better than in previous years, but I personally felt they could have been crunchier. This may just be a personal preference, as the cheese sticks were delicious. I can not comment on the chips, the chimi-changas, or on the artichoke dip as I do not like either of those personally. Nonetheless, my significant other did seem to enjoy them (she did not seem to like the chips as much as the chimi-changas and dip). As for dipping sauces, the marinara sauce was good; the honey mustard tasted weird to me. My significant other enjoyed it (she has stated she did not 'love it', but rather just liked it) but I personally felt it was too fluid and lacked any real substantive honey mustard flavor. Again, it may be a personal preference for stronger sauces.
3.) In the case of the 'mojo bones', they were as tasty as ever. Having come here for years, I do believe it is one of the best options on their menu. We shared the full rack, and it was quite enough to fill both of us. The only qualm I personally had with the mojo bones was that I felt they could have been a bit warmer; they were quite warm when they arrived, but I felt they could have been hotter. The meat did fall off the bone easily and was tender, warm, and delicious. It would be unfair to say otherwise. I am simply used to a piping hot slab of meat when I order meat so, if you are as well, then be wary that the 'mojo bones' may not be piping hot but they will not be cold at all. Just very warm. We had to ask for ketchup for the fries, but that is very minor as they brought us ketchup quickly when we asked for it.
4.) Finally, there are never enough napkins on the table. There is one large napkin with the utensils (and we did have utensils pre-set when we arrived, so I am not sure why this is not the case for all parties who come...), but after so many years there is still only that one napkin. The 'mojo bones' can get quite messy, and the finger-food appetizers do contain fried food (read: greasy, as they are fried), so additional napkins (at least one more pre-set with utensils) would be great.
The food has never been cheaply priced here, and will likely never be cheaply priced; yet, the quality of food and service has improved significantly in the 6-8 years that I have been a customer. I usually get dessert, but I think sharing the 'mojo bones' and 'awesome appetizer' made for a good combination that filled both of us (I would usually order my own half- or full-rack of 'mojo bones' and have enough room for dessert, which usually consists of sharing their chocolate fudge cake and ice cream volcano, but this was not the case yesterday). I can not comment on the noise, because it is obvious from looking at the restaurant that it will be noisy with the robotic animals. I look forward to seeing further improvements in food and service in the future and will very likely return. read more
