Months ago I brought my vintage ESS AM1A Heil Air Motion Transformers to them. I had an old pair, built in the 1980s, but lost their greatness. They told me they could replace the electronics and fix the speakers so they would sound better than new. I took a chance. They said it would take a break in period. First one speaker sounded much better when I plugged it in, no bass. Something seemed wrong. I logged a call and they said to bring it in. These are heavy big things, not something I can move myself. A few days later that one started playing some bass. Fast forward almost two months, and WOW they sound BETTER than ever. They now rival speakers worth $10K or more. Mind you, I'm a professional musician, a Concert Band director and have great ears. I don't want my speakers to sound like Thudders, I want them to sound like the real things, great musicians playing acoustic instruments in a concert hall. They do it. When I was a kid I owned a low-end Marantz receiver (it was stolen in a burglary). Bummer! I always wanted another one and finally got around to buying one a few years back. It's a circa 1975 Marantz 2235B, by no means top of the line, but it sounds great, is plenty loud for me, has great features, and I really love it. A few months ago I tried listening to a record (yes, vinyl) and when I powered up the Marantz receiver I smelled that horrible burnt electric odor. Lights were on, but there was no sound. I started looking for some place that could repair my vintage receiver, but at the time all I found were a couple of shops in the bay area. Then life intruded and the repair got put on the back burner. About a month ago and I started looking again for a vintage stereo repair shop and found Rainbow Electronics right down the street from where I live! I left them an email and they called me back the next day! Yes, they could repair my Marantz! Awesome! I brought it in and had a great conversation with the super-friendly technician. About a week passed, maybe more, and no one had contacted me about the status of the repair. I'm not shy, so I called (it might have been on Monday) and was told they hadn't even looked at it yet, but that they would bump it up to the front of the line and get it to me by the following Monday. I guess I must have made some sort of disappointed sound or something, because the lady I was speaking with said, "What, do you have something going on?" Actually, I did! I told her some friends were visiting from out-of-state and would be here on Thursday. She said she thought they had all the parts in stock needed to repair my unit and that they might be able to get it to me by then! I said it would be great if they could do that! Now it was Wednesday and I was wondering if I would have music when my friends visited, so I called Rainbow Electronics again, hoping the repair might be completed. The lady checked and said I could pick up the receiver that afternoon! I went in and got my newly repaired Marantz 2235B. They gave me a receipt that said it tested ok, along with a bag of parts that had been replaced. There were quite a few little electronic gizmos in that baggie (I have absolutely no idea what they are or what they do; see the picture, maybe you'll know). I took my receiver home and hooked it up. It worked perfectly! We had a great visit with my friends and listened to many records and CDs! I have been listening to music every day since it came back. It sounds so good! Really, I believe it sounds better than it did before it stopped working. Full disclosure: It wasn't cheap to have my Marantz fixed. But I knew when I bought a vintage stereo receiver that at some point it might need to be repaired and that it would probably cost some coin. So be it. I have a beautiful, fully functioning vintage Marantz that now works like a charm because Rainbow Electronics had the expertise to diagnose the problem and get it back in working order. Things cost what they cost and expert technicians who do the job correctly are always worth the price, IMHO. Besides, what's the alternative? I'm not tossing out my vintage receiver just because it requires repair. If you love your old electronic equipment but it needs fixing, Rainbow Electronics is the place to go. I sent a couple of Line 6 transmitters for repair. The terms seemed reasonable, there is a moderate bench fee to diagnose, that is then included in the repair. However, the estimate for repair was more than the cost of new units, and more than 2x the cost of functioning used units. In order to not lose the bench fee, i had one unit repaired. It took half a year. This is not entirely Rainbow's fault, as they had to wait for parts. I didn't like that it was "one more month, one more month..." Rainbow was responsive with communication, and easy to talk to. But overall I would not use them again due to prohibitive cost of repair. read more

Brought a McIntosh DVD player to this shop to fix a problem. The only problem was the disc tray was not opening. They charged me 250.00 as an initial deposit. After a month, they called me and said they could not repair it because McIntosh did not provide the part and they asked me to pick up the DVD back. I went to the shop to pick up my DVD and asked if they would refund me the 250 back. They said no. At home, to my surprise, the DVD does not turn on anymore. I do not know what they did with my machine. I called the shop to see, and the technician told me he had experienced that and he would not discuss this subject with me. Very strange because it was not reported when they called me to pick up the machine. The result of the experience with Rainbow Electronics is : 1- I spent 250 for nothing and now I have two problems: does not turn on and the tray still does not open. 2- one of the worst customer service you can have. They were arrogant and prepotent. They treat you as an idiot who understands nothing and must believe everything they say. I will write a letter to McIntosh, explaining the situation and ask McIntosh to remove this shop from their website as a credentialed repair shop. I took my Macintosh 1500 and LW. Erath speakers to Rainbow electronics 2-18-2025. Got it back 3-3-2025 and it sounds FANTASTIC! The stereo would not produce any sound when I took in it. The stereo had been modified to work with the Erath reverse feedback design, which I guess was a interesting idea at the time, but not worth working with today. The guys at Rainbow electronics replaced the modified crap and put the system back to rights. It's only been one day, but DAM it SOUNDS SO GOOD! I was a loyal customer for 10 years + to Rainbow and have spent $$$$ of dollars with them. BUT! My last 2 experiences will have me using other resources moving forward. - dates - 2020 / 2021 1st, I gave them an Avalon 737 mic pre to repair.. This is a quote from the repair guy "we didn't have the capacitor with the same voltage, so we used one a little higher" So he didn't repair the amp to spect and the amp never sounded the same. I ended up selling the because it didn't provide the same texture. 2nd, I showed up with 2 monitor amps that needed help. But I had a Yamaha monitor amp that was shorting out, that was the important amp. I showed up, paid the check-in fee. On the spot the guy plugged the Yamaha in and of course it played fine, he basically shrugged his shoulders at it, then he gave it back to me "It seems to work fine." He did no work on it, literally plugged it in, I was there 10 minutes. So I said "ok let me give you my other amp"... They insisted I needed to make another deposit to look at that amp. I asked them if they could use the Yamaha deposit toward the other amp since they didn't do any work. They insisted that my fee was forfeited and I'd need to make another deposit for them to look at the other amp... They insisted thats policy.. Thats BS! They stole my money as far as I'm concerned! They treated me like I was trying to scam them or I was trying to get over on them. I literally just gave you a deposit for them to do absolutely nothing... Plug in an amp and hand it back... I took both my amps and left! I found another shop that treated me like they wanted my business, they were cheaper and they used spec parts! I wont be back! read more

So, I sent my Korg Nautilus 88 in to these people to have the key bed upgraded to After Touch. I thought it was mighty considerate of Korg to offer this as a $499 upgrade to all current owners of the Nautilus (61 and 88 key only), and this shop was one of just a couple in the Bay area that were Korg authorized. I live in northern Humboldt county so I had to ship the board to them, for an additional cost of $300. The board was in pristine condition when I packed it off. All the programs were intact. It had absolutely no issues whatsoever. It arrived at Rainbow Electronics on 10-11-24, and Robyn told me it would take a week to get the part from Korg, and I should have it back within the next week. It took another week and a half. No big deal. But the fact that the board was returned with a broken bass key and a frazzled hard drive was, in fact, a big deal. When informed of this fact, Robyn agreed to pay for shipping back to her shop to fix the issues. Great. The board went back and sat in their shop for awhile before someone got around to it. There was no monetary incentive so I guess I was the lowest priority. Not cool. I finally received the keyboard on Saturday, 11-23-24! Upon unboxing I was not happy to see the condition of the board. It had scratches and greasy finger prints all over the exterior. It looked like someone ate their lunch over it, on more than one occasion. Obviously, it had been treated poorly, and nobody had had the decency to clean it up before they packed it. I truly wish I had checked Yelp before I sent my board to these people. There were other authorized shops and I should have done due diligence. They were referred through Korg USA as an authorized service center. I can't wait to hear what Korg has to say about this mess. That included the time it took to order and receive the necessary parts from McIntosh. Been here 3 times, had repairs done twice - the third was too expensive at the time (Carver A-753x). I give 4 stars because the work is VERY good. Quality techs and they do really understand the electronics they work on. Fair value, and yes they are expensive because they don't hire cheap monkeys with soldering irons. I cringe at the price, but I know professionals are worth the money. I had them repair a very old McIntosh pre-amp years ago in their old location, and the latest repair was a Simaudio Moon Aurora 5- which was expensive, but considering the amp cost more than an entry level car when new - I was ok with the repair and it runs cleanly years later. They even offered to cater the tuning and performance to my preferences. All in all, I feel you can trust their work on vintage and high end audio gear, be prepared to pay for it - and I am very pleased since everything they've worked on for me has lasted - as my Moon Aurora 5 was repaired pre-covid and thankfully so - I had a lot of free time to listen alone. :) read more

I recently had a chance to need their service. Customer service was lacking. They charged me nearly $300.00 dollars to change a battery in my keyboard. I sought to have a timer (I should have said "metronome" or "click track restored") in my sequencer restored and battery replaced, nothing more. This was on Oct 19. Last week I got the call my keyboard was repaired. When I got there I as told the battery mount was replaced and new battery was installed, nothing else like II requested. I was told, "See it says here 'Timer in sequencer battery, don't touch anything else.'" Even though I pointed out those are to items on separate lines. "well, the company told me they don't have a sequencer. To add insult to injury, the owner (I'm told) called me to reiterate it says 'sequencer battery' and I will not discuss it anymore. Enjoy the $272.85. With all the work they have going in there, they can afford not to discuss a attitude. They probably do good work if it's easy. I brought in my Yamaha digital mixer because it wasn't booting. This mixer was pretty old and not supported. Rainbow electronics was not able to fix the issue, but was able to at least tell me what was causing it. It turned out that the SCSI CD ROM went bad and was preventing a full boot up. Once the SCSI CD ROM was unplugged, it booted up. I was able to later install a new SCSI CD ROM and everything is now 100% functional. read more

As a resident of downtown Sacramento I was so lucky to find Rainbow Electronics practically in my backyard. Even better, Rainbow Electronics came highly recommended by one of my friends who has had many audio components repaired over the years to come. I can't thank Robyn's guys enough for the new life that they put into my keyboard. It works perfectly now. It is so nice to have it back -- I suffer from practice withdrawals when away from my keyboard for more than a few days. The cost for reconditioning was very reasonable, and much less than the costs involved had I needed to start looking at a replacement keyboard. On fender's webpage for warranty repair this location is listed as a place for you to take you're equipment fixed when I called fender to have a new guitar repaired under manufacture warranty ($1500 guitar was missing a screw at the bottom of the guitar string and volume knob was loosen from the side) when I spoke with the fender customer service repair rep he mentioned to contact this location and they will repair it at no cost. I contacted this location and the gentleman over the phone who answered said they only repair Fender Amps/pedals and they do not fix/repair guitars. I understand but if that's the case then this location should not be listed under "guitar warranty repair centers" and more Fender customers should not be sent this location. This company needs to contact Fender and have them take Electronic off the repair list so future customers don't go through this issue. Ok this place is simply great. Awesome techs that know what they are doing. They even make a warmenfat micro tube amp that smacks pretty hard. Found this out picking up a nord stage 3 that had a pitch bend error and saw a few sitting on an old fender amp. They fixed the nord no problem. And we're quite fast too. Way quicker than what they had told me it was going to take which I was pleasantly surprised. Anyway here is to the reviewers complaining and giving low ratings. STOP BUYING CRAPPY GEAR. If you buy something that costs 300 bucks like an amp or something and something happens to it. Don't waste your time like you've already done buying it in the first place. don't bring it to these PROFESSIONALS who repair PROFESSIONAL grade equipment. Yes it cost 400 dollars and some change to fix a pitch bender on the Nord. Well worth it compared to buying a new 3700 dollar nord. But for those bringing in cheap solid state amps or whatever crappy China made garbage wanting them fixed. You will be better off buying another piece of crap if you like playing out of crap. But if you were smart you would invest in your sound and buy something that will stand many tests. time, wear, tear. And then if something does happen to that solid investment. The staff was very forthright and professional. I dropped off a Roland Cube amp that brand new at Guitar Center would cost 309. Rainbow's diagnostic fee was 90 that goes towards repair. They called 6 weeks later with the diagnosis. They needed to replace a $10 switch and said they charge $100 an hour so the total cost out the door to fix would be $279. Of course I could buy a new one for about $30 more plus tax. My fault for thinking this would be about a $100 fix or so. No wonder people just throw stuff out. read more

Repair shops that work on "regular" amp heads are hard to find. I've been discouraged from having gear fixed by other shops because it isn't a $2000 Orange head, therefore not worth their time. So, with trepidation I called up Rainbow, and he said no problem, bring it in. The shop is in a mostly empty strip mall off Manzanita. When I got there, I waited around for 10-15 as he was late to open up the shop. Told me it would be two weeks before he could look at it. Took at $85 deposit, which is applied to your total balance at the end if you choose to have he work done. Called me just over two weeks later to tell me what the damage would be. About a week after that, I got a call saying it was done and I could come pick it up. He ended up charging me about $50 less than the original quote, so that was cool. Total cost to have my head repaired was just under $300, so definitely not cheap, but worth it, and less than buying a new one. read more

Well friendly customer service at this place is what I feel I was not getting from one employee when I showed him an item I needed fixed. Just wanted a common part replaced that most electronic repair shops can replace and have done probably several times with not much difficulty and there was easy access to the bad part. I just wanted the part replaced and the oem part was still available from the mfg..just swap out the bad part and put in the new part in thats all I needed. I don't need no guarantee because the unit is old ..if the unit did not work after that I d just get a new unit because of the age of the unit but na they wanted a paid diagnosis to be done. The part only needed cleaning but for how old it was I d rather just have it replaced so it will last me another 17 years most likely.. I was polite and nice and friendly but seems to me and is of my opinion if I won't have anything or everything I bring diagnosed with the expensive fee for that then I don't deserve friendly customer service.. seems like the diagnosis with the expensive fee is their first initial interest and most import part for them to do any work IMHO. I would not recommend this place due to the customer service and no volunteered forecast by the rep to the possibility or probability of what the costs for the work could be. Another repair shop was friendly and was willing to replace the parts for me but instead advised me to clean the part since it was easy to get to and if any problem I can bring back to have the part replaced. read more

I brought in two of my QSC speakers there I told them that one speaker kind of worked but would turn off randomly if it got loud and that the other one didn't turn on at all they charged me $170 just for the diagnostic fee and then to fix one of my speakers they wanted to charge me $700 I look online and see that the part is $220 and there's videos everywhere and people installing this part in three minutes yet they feel the need to do a 100% markup on parts plus try and tell me it's going to take two hours for the repair. And then they tell me my other speaker was perfectly OK so I set up the speaker at one of my events and lo and behold the speaker goes out just like I said it does so they couldn't even diagnose the speaker correctly. My stereo is mostly vintage 70's equipment. Techs that repair vintage Marantz, Phase Linear, etc. are getting harder to find. I moved here from the Bay Area in the fall. It was not long before one of my amplifiers needed professional servicing. I prefer finding local techs as I do not like shipping equipment. Thankfully, I found Rainbow Electronics in Citrus Heights. Upfront deposits for diagnosis are standard in this industry as it takes time to find the problem. Rainbow charged a fair amount and promised a diagnosis/estimate in four weeks (again, this is also typical). It took 5 weeks and I was pleased considering three major holidays fell in this period. I have had repairs like this take eight months to get back from other repair shops. My amp was repaired a week later for a fair and reasonable price. These guys know what they are doing. My amplifier is performing like new and I am certain these guys will not be seeing it again for a very long time, if ever. Took my beloved Line 6 Series 700 emulator guitar (with VERY complicated electronics) to Rainbow because NOBODY ELSE in Sacramento would work on it. (please note: Rainbow is NOT a guitar repair shop, but they do an awesome job on the electronics)... My guitar would not even power on when i brought it in. The man who took my guitar said it would be two weeks, and it WAS two weeks... BUT... they got it right! And they DID NOT Charge me an arm and a leg... they charged me a VERY reasonable 85 $ 'diagnosis' fee... which they then applied to the repair work... which only cost an additional 112$... now, my 750.00 Line 6 plays like new! I was blown away when they refused to replace a diode on my YAMAH keyboard circuitboard everything's fine though yeah ($2.14 cent part and simple solder) with out me bring in the whole keyboard ($85 Service Fee, not including the repairs which i was told could be a couple hundred) This seams a bit greedy to me. I told them i was willing to play $50 (cost of a new panel $63.22) which i believe is more than fair for 10 min of there time to solder.
