Big whoop. I had to go and find the sales associate who took my bags to begin with so she could give me my bags. I get it- it's a security measure but how can I even prove it's my bag if you're holding my bag/ wallet/ ID behind the counter?? Then to top things off when I'm going to purchase my items (considering I now have my wallet) the girl literally throws my things in a bag by sliding it off the counter into the bag. She didn't even bother to fold them and put them in the bag like any customer service/ sales associate would do. I love Ragstock and have been coming here since junior high. They have great vintage items (i.e. t-shirts, etc) but most of their high quality vintage stuff are NOT for sale. You can find them around the cash register. The place is hidden and off of Belmont Ave. There is a big long sign on Belmont so you can find the store. It's in the same building at Hollywood Mirror and you'll find the door off the alley and then go up the stairs. Anyways, they have lots of random clothes here and it's fun to look through. If you need cheap sunglasses, tanks, sweats, going out clothes, come here. It's new clothes (but they do have a used clothes section) and everything is pretty cheap. I got the cutest panda bear sweatshirt for only $7! And a super cute wallet for $8. I didn't give it more stars because the staff are EXTREMELY rude and not helpful. My friend wanted this shirt that was on a manican so when we were checking out, she asked where she can find it. And the girl said that they didn't sell it anymore so then I asked if my friend could take it off the manicin. Ragstock is the biggest independent clothing shop in Lakeview, carrying all manner of new and used clothing. This is a great place to find retro items and cheap accessories. If you're planning a costume or would like come clothes you can cut up for other projects definitely try here. Most things come quite cheap unless they're military garments or old formal wear, and they definitely cater to trends. Sales are regular as well ($2.00 t-shirt racks!). And not too long ago they expanded to the basement of their building as well. As a disclaimer, this is not the place to find clean, fancy clothes. Came here out of boredom after work really in-search of some Champion NBA jerseys from the 90's ... love em in the summer. Their jersey selection wasn't doing it at all tho. Majority of their NBA jerseys were in youth sizes. Most of their jerseys are from the Minnesota Timberwolves ... like damn near all of them. Been back a few times and still haven't found anything really worth grabbing from that rack. I work at Belmont Army down the street and I've had better jersey finds there than at Ragstock. I'll agree with the person who said it's the most organized thrift store they've ever been in. The other day when my friend told me she was looking for a long skirt for a Halloween costume, I immediately referred her to Ragstock, because they always have very organized racks of the most arbitrary things. Oh look, a whole rack full of plaid jumpers! Oh wow, a whole wall of long black skirts! It's strange. Occasionally I find a shirt from last year's GAP collection or a pair of NY & Company jeans to buy at a fraction of their original cost, but a lot of the stuff here can be ratty and/or very old. The staff are complete morons who are totally full of themselves and scoff at any purchase you make. Additionally, they make getting a key to a dressing room as frustrating and annoying as possible. This place is awesome! The entrance is a bit hidden in an alley so it is easy to miss even if you've passed it many times. It is a great place for quality, low cost, unique clothing. I got a tank top here for $2 that I wear all the time and it is still in "like new" condition. This is also a great stop to get costume-like items. read more

I first shopped here with my mom when I was 13. Now, as a disgruntled old hag in my late 20's whose marrying some Louis CK-looking wonk, I'm still coming here. Part of this is because I'm a crass old sea witch who hates change and wishes the Clinton administration was still around. The other is because, unlike American Apparel and their insane prices, Ragstock does have a multitude of different layers and accessories for very cheap. Leggings? $5. T-shirts? $5. Earrings? $2. Sometimes there are very good end-of-season deals; one of the interns at my job got a very pretty silk dress for $10 in July this year. The best time to come for cheap, fun accessories is right before the big holidays. Screw Party City and their stupid crap; Ragstock is the place to get your light up Halloween earrings, stuffed dreidels, and, of course, all PRIDE material! This place is a goddamn nightmare around Pride, FYI. Clothes everyone, screaming college kids, and general chaos. Still a pretty decent store, and one of the few places I can think of in the Belmont/Clark area that I frequented when I was younger that hasn't worsened from my youthful memories. Prices aren't the best or the worst in the world, and most of the time they're decent. If you look hard enough, you can find some bargains here and there. Staff still has a slightly unfriendly and rude vibe, just like they were in my youth. And if you want really dirt cheap clothing, you're better off going to Howard Brown(Brown Elephant), or any other thrift store in the city. They did the odd thing of flipping back and forth between playing real crappy music, and despite being in Wrigleyville, had a White Sox game on the radio. Yay for that! Also, the addition of the basement area has improved this place, and made it more organized overall. Finally, I thought it was interesting and cool that they sell certain Japanese clothing, such as obis(sp?) and kimonos(sp?) on the 2nd floor. And though I miss their location on Sheridan Rd. by Loyola University, I hope this place continues to stay here for a long time to come. After braving the alleyway to find the side entrance of this Ragstock, I was pleasantly surprised to find a HUGE space upstairs filled with anything and everything you would want to find in a resale place. I thought the randomness of it was hilarious, and because it was fairly recently after Halloween, there was still a large area where they had had all the costumes hanging up. I was able to find several things that I was interested in, but then they lose a star for their dressing rooms. I ended up not going into them because they are behind this chain link fence, and there was a line. The first girl I had to deal with behind the counter was totally out of it, but by the time I went to pay there was another more lucid girl there to complete my transaction. BONUS: Check out their men's selection downstairs, if you have a chance. They have an entire rack devoted to Magnum P.I. and at this time of year there is a great selection of UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATERS! Do you need tacky christmas sweater? This is your place to go. Hundreds, if not thousands. They range in price from $7.50 to $20. Nothing to say what others havent - entrance is in the alley. Mens clothes are upstairs. Womens are upstairs (Not all that progressive, but eh). Vintage clothing store with good prices. Return and refund policy is where I am disappointed - the policy is no. I understand because a lot of people could wear their christmas sweater that night and try to return it in the morning. But what about same-day returns? Also, its a like cattle call in there. Things are crammed in, and on a busy day, you have to push yourself in there to get what you want. They can't control this in many ways, but if its christmas, spread out the christmas gear throughout the bottom level so people arent getting slammed into the wall. And carry some mens sweaters, eh? Ragstock seemed to have peaked about 15 years ago. Compared to all the other thrift stores in the city, its prices are above average, and quality below. However, I still come in now and then, partly from nostalgia. When I first discovered the Ragstock in Minneapolis as a poor college student, it was a goldmine of possibilities. I could actually put together a cool wardrobe and pay only $1-$3 a piece. To get those prices now, you have to go to Brown Elephant or Vilage Thrift. I like this place because 1)Everything's cheap and 2)It's pretty much across the street from my apartment. I try to go once a month to dig through the clearance racks and find some basic tees/pants/accessories. I used to go a LOT, but then I found myself digging through racks of clothes that I already owned. :-o The staff can be shitty, and the used section can be dumpy, but you can't beat most of the $3/5/10 racks in the corner. Ahhh yeah, Ragstock. I usually try to stay away from this place unless I have to go in, which is about every other Halloween season. Then I remember why I like this place. Costumes aside, if you can't find something that reflects your tastes or who you want to be, even for one night a year, well, you might need help. Even though I'm a little too old for some of the stuff in there, I've never been disappointed with the place. On my last trip, I was scouting out the selection, letting my inner 17 year old out to roam around, while my present self looked for more realistic styles and selections. Too bad I didn't need what I came across- a fall jacket, like-new button shirt, and work friendly cargo pants, all for $20 total. Yes, I probably won't find a combo like that again, but I know that the next time I come, I will find something. As for the service? Yes, I don't have high expectations. I never did. Maybe that is why I can tolerate this place as time has passed and most of the people in here are younger than me. The music is loud (and probably be something that will irritate 99.999% of the people that go in- it was barely tolerable then, barely tolerable now) and the service is lousy. If you want someone to hold your hand, head for Michigan Ave or the suburban malls. One of the few truer hold-outs in a Belmont-Clark-Halsted area that is now a shell of its edgier eighties past, I think Ragstock has survived by being exactly what it is. Pros: Something for everyone, decent prices, great place for Halloween or costume parties, every changing selection, location. Cons: Service, items of questionable origin (just wash everything when you get home), some items are questionably priced, location. A fun little place to visit when looking to do silly shopping. The store is quite organized for being a thrift shop. I tend to buy my winter hats/gloves/scarves here. My newest edition of scarf and gloves are super adorable but on the pricey side for a resale shop. They don't have many clothes for those of us that are plus sized which is disappointing, but for those of average size and smaller it's a land of plenty. I was very entertained by Maria F. trying on a plethora of ugly ugly ugly jackets, which is a big part of the fun in "vintage" shopping. I'd suggest everyone visit at least once. read more

I work at a boarding school with teens, and I'd been to Ragstock a few times years ago. It's pretty cool that you can buy pretty nice new stuff for thrifty prices, but I think coming here with the kids I work with made me realize just how awesome this place really is. They get a super small allowance, so they get to shop for brand new stuff all that often. Here, they were able to look around and find some choice items they would actually be able to afford. When I was in college I came a few times for the same reason that they like coming here, but with a bigger budget and just to save money. They really do have it all, hats, gloves, scarves, sweaters and coats. It has two floors of stuff and both floors are huge. So, if you're looking for some basics or maybe one cool item, it's worth a shot. They also have some funky stuff sometimes, so it might be a good call for some outrageous pieces too. If you need something vintage, a staple (think hoodies, screen printed tees, oversized accessories, tights etc) cowboy boots (in so so condition) or random costume accessories (think monocle, skinny 80s ties, ridiculous gas masks etc) then this is the place for you. Guys and girls depts are about the same give or take in terms of assortment- I usually end up going with guys so I spend more time downstairs than up...and that's not meant to sound as bad as it sounds... anyway, it's average- service is definitely lacking- last time we were in, it was 7 minutes to closing and the worker said 'we don't get overtime anymore, so are you done'....as I respect the working man's goal of not staying at his said crappy retail job past closing...we were still shopping and we had a decent amount of things in our arms for even a place as cheap as ragstock....however said clerk's try to be cool attitude is expected for the shop workers in this area anyway... so last year around this time i found myself in search of THE PERFECT WEDDING DRESS. and i found it at ragstock. no, not for my wedding-- god, no-- for my halloween costume! my friends and i were doing the dead madonna thing (like ya do) and i needed a dress that sang "like a virgin" so i could pimp it out for my "like a vampire" getup. so i went to ragstock and holy wedding dresses, batman. there must have been hundreds of them, in all sizes and styles. sorting through that mess was not easy, but i managed to try on a couple batches. and then there it was, THE dress. it seemed too good to be true- the perfect style AND the perfect fit? i mean, i didn't even have to wear a bra, that's how made for me this dress was. (i did wear a one, though, thanks for asking.) and then the price tag: $10!?! i felt like i was in that ikea commercial ("start the car! start the car!") i was so excited. ragstock also has accessories up the wazoo. got a necklace for me (black sparkly lips with fangs- again, too good to be true) and some bling for my material ghoul. read more

I'll be honest, I haven't bought a single article of clothing from Ragstock. They do seem to have quite a large selection and it's fun to browse the racks now and again, but I haven't really found any amazing clothing finds--yet. The thing I adore about Ragstock is their home linen section (I guess that's what it would be called). I scored some really beautiful vintage tea towels here for cheeeeap (five bucks or less and in really good condition, whereas at the Chicago Antique Market on Randolph they ran $20 and up!). I also found some really sweet vintage holiday table linens for a mere $4 each--no stains, no holes, no frayed edges, just pure, unadulterated, cheap nostalgia. I don't even know where to begin with this one. In a way, I've been informally reviewing Rackstock for years. It's about a mile away from my apartment so when I shop there, I tend to walk. As a rule of thumb, a good portion of the walk back is spent ranting on my phone to my roommate (who also frequents the store) about my experience. I have the ultimate love/hate relationship with Ragstock. I love their clothes, but shopping there never fails take pissing me off to a new level. My first visit was for a Halloween costume. I saw that they sold casual women's clothing but I was slightly pressed for time so I focused on getting the costume with the intention on returning another time. I was impressed with their large selection of slutty costumes and selected a few to try on and was in and out quickly. There were large speakers all over the store screeching loud freaky sounding music that was distracting and actually gave me a headache. At the time I was a bartender in Wrigleyville so you can draw your own conclusions on how loud that music had to be to give me a headache. I wrote the music off as a failed attempt to be cryptic and creepy for Halloween.I returned about a month later to see their selection of clothing only to discover that loud blaring creepy music is apparently part of their day to day operation. Unlike the last time where the music consisted of screams and drums, this day's selection consisted of odd clinking sounds over a beat in a continuous state of looping crescendo and decrescendo that I liken to Chinese Water Torture. I had my Ipod on me that day but the music was so loud that I could hear both my music and the crazy clinking crap. As far as the clothes. They were amazing! I have never been a fan of consignment so I kept to the new area. Although somewhat disorganized in their presentation I liked the style of many items, and being unsure of the sizing I occasionally grabbed two sizes of the same item. I had more than the 6 garment limit so I took the time to separated my clothes into into 3 different groups so that the duplicates were together. I did this right in front of the clerk and then stood hoping he would notice me and issue me a number. Apparently he was to busy staring into oblivion thinking about the complexities of black nail polish to see the person standing in front of him. After a while I said "fuck it" and walked right by him into the dressing room with about 16 items. After I finished I walked up to him to hand him the sizes of the duplicates that were too big/small and the items I didn't like. This hard worker turns to me and says "You have to re rack them yourself." Are you serious? Could you be more worthless? You may wonder why I continue to shop at Ragstock. The answer is simple. They have really good clothing at reasonable prices. You won't find anything fancy here, but in the summer (when I do most of my shopping here - I find their winter selection to be a little blah) they have a lot of casual yet cute items. Ragstock would get 5 stars from me if they could somehow manage to get their shit together. A few other things to note: 1) All purchases are 100% final with no refunds or exchanges. This policy includes even exchanges as well. I was burned on this on my first visit when I was sizing clothes. I accidentally put back a small and purchased a medium. I returned 3 days later with the shirt (unworn with tags), receipt, and credit card used but was unable to swap out for the smaller size. 2) They use an old school tag system rather than a scanner. However, when they do markdowns, they do not note them on the tags (it takes too much work to write new prices apparently) so you are at the mercy of the memory person ringing you up. The people that work here are the most apathetic "woe is me" cutter types and generally not the sharpest crayons in the box. I have had to remind them many times that items were marked differently. Knowing they don't have a firm inventory control makes me even madder at the no exchange thing. 3)The people that work here are horrible people that lack logic, tact, or any regard for customers. My roommate had a hooded jacket that she purchased there in a previous year. She lost it and often complains that she hasn't found one like it since. I saw one just like it so I took a picture with my phone and sent it to her asking if she'd like me to pick it up for her. best. halloween. store. ever. they've got funky, spunky, weird, outrageous, vintage, modern, smelly, old, furry, fro-y, leopard, tiger, cheap, hairy, leather, sticky, and neon. i think that about covers it. themed parties (not just halloween) would be inspired by this store. you know how i love themed parties. my next idea: a legwarmer birthday party.
