Beware if you are considering consigning at Sophie's Closet. I went to pick up my consignments, and they insisted on giving me a dress that wasn't mine! I told the owner, and she called me a liar! She was incredibly rude and no class whatsoever--they tried to pull a fast one on me and I had no choice. The owner's employee in the beginning said there was no description or label of the dress other than it was black and a size small, but the owner pushed the dress on me and said it was French Connection--now who's the real liar here?! This store comes up in searches for vintage stores, but they seem to have stopped the vintage? I moved to Edgewater four years ago and live around the corner. I have a couple of vintage dresses to sell. I looked on their site just now and it makes no mention of vintage. It emphasizes designer items only and *current* styles. Nice little shop. This store is not overwhelming and has a lot of nice pieces of clothes, jewelry, and handbags for affordable prices. We walked out with earrings, a dress, shorts, and a cute top. Will definitely be back! The associate behind the counter was extremely kind as well. read more

I've been here twice and both times I left with something. Now although its a small store, you definitely want to take your time. At first, it may look like a shop for an older crowd (40 and over), but if you take your time going through the clothes you can definitely find something. The last time I went I came out with a gorgeous wool Ann Taylor Loft skirt for $16 and a cute Nine West clutch that was practically brand new for $20. The owner is really nice and its never been too crowded either, which I LOVE. P.S. I haven't purchased any jewelry yet, but I definitely plan to in the future. I love this little shop- it's the sweetest little clothing store. I always find something unique when I need a beautiful dress, something for an occasion, or just every day work clothes. I know I'll find something nice and good quality. I never regretted anything I bought here. They have some unique jewelry, too. I found a beautiful green Swarovski crystal ring that was extremely affordable. I love love love Sophie's Closet. I wish they had more of them around. Unfortunately, now I have moved farther from the area but I would definitely drive down any time to shop there. The owners and cashiers are always so nice and very accommodating. What a gem! This is my new favorite store in Chicago. Beautiful, unique and well-made designer clothing for a fraction of the price. Store also features beautiful jewelry, bags and antique furniture. I consider myself to be pretty picky when it comes to resale shops.I've seriously made an art of bargain hunting--for clothes, furniture, you name it!--in San Francisco. So when I was visiting my parents in Chicago last month and my mom told me about a new resale shop that had opened in her neighborhood, I was game to check it out, though I didn't think it would hold a candle to the resale shops in SF. Was I ever surprised! This store is AMAZING! Sophie has wonderful taste and she's done a beautiful job of organizing her store to showcase the goods. Typically I've found that stores with high quality designer clothes, have major attitude and sky high prices to go along with it. Then there are the bargain stores, where the clothes are cheap, but you have to really hunt to find the diamonds in the rough. Not the case at Sophie's Closet! Sophie is very warm and friendly and she has a well-edited selection of clothes, all seem to be great quality, and the prices are very reasonable. I scored an INCREDIBLE vintage Valentino sweater (that I receive numerous compliments on every time I wear it!) along with several other items. I could have easily bought more, except that I was worried about fitting it all in my suitcase for the flight back to San Francisco. On the way out, I fell in love with a pair of crystal candlesticks. I couldn't rationalize lugging them all the way to California, but my mom went back a few weeks later to purchase them for me. She hand-delivered them last week as part of my birthday present and they look gorgeous on my dining room table. This store is a hidden treasure trove. Not the place to go if you want vintage items. This store sells mainly older women's clothing, much of which is from chain stores like Macy's and Kohl's. If you're looking for department store clothes from last season at lower-than-department-store prices (think $15-$20 for a blouse, dresses in the $20s-30s), then this is the place to go. The staff seemed a little unfriendly. It was awkward having them watch me the whole time I browsed the store. Overall, it didn't seem like a bad place, just not ideal for the younger crowd. Careful if you want to sell/consign your clothing. She prices low so that your take is given in a store credit (below $20) and not in cash. It's in the contract. Some of us are so eager to sell our things we don't read the fine print, but if you want cash back, it's better to take it to a consignment like Elliott. read more

Selling your items here is a complete rip off. I had 20+ items on consignment here and was sent a check for only 3 small items after the time for the items had been up. After I called in to let them know my friend was coming to pick up my items, the lady told me my friend would have to go through the store and find the items all by the numbers. If the time for my items had been up, why were they still on the shelves? makes you wonder. After my friend picked up the bag full of the items, 4 things were missing. They were not included in the check either. I strongly feel like this place likes to make their money off of stealing peoples items. Always pick up your unsold items, because they certainly cant be donated if they are still on the shelves. read more

I love Sophie's Closet. The owners are great, friendly and very approachable and fun to talk to. I have been consigning at this store for over a year and with great results. I get a nice check regularly, once a month. I highly recommend it to all my friends for consigning as well as shopping. The store is spacious, well organized, and clean. I love the fact that it sells clothes, purses, shoes as well as home decorating objects and some furniture. Some vintage gems can also be found at this store. I highly recommend it to all who believe in buying gently used items at a very reasonable price. read more
