The owner makes the clothes she sells in the studio at the back of the store. She began doing so when she was pregnant with her own child years ago and calls herself a "color equity ambassador" according to the website, which I can get on board with: When she was pregnant, she could only find stereotypical boy/girl colors in clothing. I can confirm! It is a struggle to find baby clothes that aren't in the "blue for boy, pink for girl" camp (did you know that pink was once associated with boys, and the gendering of colors is a relatively new phenomenon?). During my own pregnancy a few months ago I had a hard time with this as well, and the inventory at the stores I visited tended to have a lot of blue or pink rather than gender neutral selection. What began as an online store finally grew into a physical location in late 2022. The clothing for both children and adults feature bold, gender neutral patterns. They feature an artist in residence, who at the time of this writing is Adria Green. Although they now have a physical location, they still participate in some local craft shows (they were at Renegade this weekend). The store also features like-minded brands in addition to its own. I purchased something from a brand called Earth Cadets, a local Chicago company that sells durable goods. Another of the brands they carry, Gunner + Lux, actually has a pop-up on their site asking you to confirm you agree with their equity principles or they can't take your money. I love that she supports and provides an outlet for other eco- and socially-conscious brands. The next step (according to the email list that I was apparently added to) is inclusive sizing, which I can definitely appreciate as a plus-size woman. Usually when I go to The Understudy, I park on the Gregory Street side. For that reason I never noticed this shop until today. I'm glad that I did and was able to stop by, and hope this shop thrives in this location.

The staff member was super helpful, they helped me with some suggestions as I was looking for a couple of gifts. I checked a baby shower and house warming off my lists AND grabbed a handful of fun greeting cards that will be great to have on hand. I learned that most everything is made on-site by the owner, their studio is in the back of the shop along with an artist in residence. They also feature other local goods from women-owned businesses. Heck yes. I am happy to have a new go-to small business for my gifting needs and am eyeing some of the impeccable clothing for myself.

There is a lot to like about Dearborn Denim, with just one caveat at the end…read more What I like: + The jeans are made in Chicago. While I am not someone who completely avoids clothing made overseas, I feel good about wearing something that contributes to the local economy and is made by someone working in safe conditions for a good wage. + The jeans are a good cross between rugged and comfortable (especially after a little wear-in). While I would not wear these to a construction site or run in them, they work well for an office worker with a cat. What I mean is, they are soft enough that I don't feel abrasion or scratchiness from all-day wear. At the same time, when my cat greets me at the door with claws extended, I am not as worried about holes or damage as with other, more expensive brands. + The length is cut to your size and preference and then sewn in-store while you wait. While I am not a man with an unusual or rare size, I love that I can have something customized to me. It's a rare and treasured touch these days. + The service in their location was fantastic. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and worked with me to find something I would be happy with in terms of color, length, and fit. + Especially considering the quality of the product and that it's made locally, I feel as though the asking price of $79 is more than reasonable. The caveat: - The fit could have been better. When I bought Levi's at Target or Amazon, I would go for the "Athletic Fit," which is a little narrower than a standard cut but not skinny. I thought Dearborn's "Tailored Fit" would be perfect, but it didn't feel quite right or comfortable. I had to go for their "Relaxed Fit," which was comfortable but didn't quite hit the nail on the head in terms of overall fit. However, I am not an unreasonable fellow and I realize that if I wanted something that would fit perfectly, I would need to pay a lot more money and go bespoke. Having fits for every body shape is otherwise impossible. I do want to mention that Mugsy, despite being of only one style, seems to be more in line with the fit I seek. However, they don't have some of the other benefits mentioned above. Final Verdict: As I start to move on from Amazon and Target (for they shrink way too much), Dearborn Denim will enter my rolodex for places where I occasionally buy clothing. However, I cannot say it will be the only place where I buy my jeans.

I stopped in with my wife on a Sunday, and despite the store being absolutely packed, the level of service was nothing short of exceptional. Her salesperson was the definition of a professional: knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely engaging without ever feeling rushed. What really set the experience apart was the attention to detail; he actually recognized the specific pair of shoes I was wearing and lamented that the particular color had been discontinued by the brand. That kind of deep product knowledge is something you simply won't find at a big-box chain or an online warehouse. Beyond the expertise, their in-stock selection is impressive. Being able to walk in, get expert advice, and walk out with exactly what you need is a reminder of how retail should work. If you value a staff that actually knows their inventory and treats customers like human beings, this is the place to go.
