Drove here with the purpose of surprising my gf with a Valentine's Day mask and surprisingly had a situation with the front end women and the owner that turned into profiling. I used the door bell and knocked and the front end women literally was sitting up front and wouldn't not open the door. The sign said open and I called but no answer. 10 minutes later I get a call from the owner informing me that the front lady identified me as the belligerent customer from yesterday described as a black man in a blue coat and I'm banned from his store. Really???? Note this was my 1st time ever visiting this store. To the owner: you are responsible for your employees and what was done is called profiling. You as the owner did not verify (ie checking the security camera which you admitted) prior to making the accusation and banning an innocent bystander. I totally understand your intent was to protect your employees but Your tact and the way you handled this situation was improper and incorrect. Profiling is a very serious issue and if you or your employees make an accusation like this in the future, please train them on how to verify or validate to make sure they are not impacting innocent bystander/customers. read more

I called before making the 45-50 minute drive to Chicago Costume, asking specifically if they had any western-themed clothes for adult women. The woman who answered said yes, they have lots of items, both to purchase as well as rent. Well, when I arrived, there was a very small purchase section for Western clothing - 95% for men. So another associate took me to the basement and there was NO western section at all. After about five minutes, she brought out three vests that also appeared to me for men. Would have been super helpful if she would have told me on the phone that they had very limited options. Would have saved me a trip. There's a surprising amount of stuff crammed in this costume store. The main level features costumes and accessories to buy. Downstairs is the rental area. Major props for having a huge selection. Chances are, they'll have nearly any costume you're looking for. But if you're looking for quality or a bargain, that's a little harder to come by. I saw some flimsy sequined suit jackets that were $60. They had virtually no structural integrity. They also had a drawer of bandanas for $10 each. Way too high for a small square of cloth. (An employee writes to inform me those bandanas were very long. Whatever. It's still $10 for fabric with a bare minimum of stitching.) But there are some bargains to be found if you look hard enough. Give yourself plenty of time if you're browsing. If you know exactly what you want, I'm sure the staff can point you straight there. As with nearly any costume store, most of the fabric here is on the cheap/thin side of the spectrum. You're paying a premium to come close to your costume vision, but it's not going to hold up under close scrutiny. The guy in the rental area downstairs said the rates vary, but most are $75 for three days. read more

I went on a dance music cruise that had certain theme days on it in January and waited too late to order my outfits online. Enter Chicago Costume to the rescue after looking for someplace not too far away with decent reviews. Very helpful staff inside and the selection is out of this world! There were Roaring 20s & Steampunk theme nights on the ship and this store had such an amazing variety of fun items & outfits to choose for each theme. In a year I go incognito a lot more than the average furry does so Chicago Costume is quite clutch. No matter what the occasion they've got almost any type of outfit for either rental or purchase. Prices aren't that bad considering the quality that they're carrying, and the friendly service is free of charge as well. They let me use a phone charger for about 15 minutes while I decided between a Liderhosen and Bavarian bar wench costume. As you would assume it can get a little hectic around Halloween, but any other time of the year it's probably the best place to pick up an alter ego. read more

The kids costumes in the back were a bit picked over, but when my eight-year old got a hold of his very first chainsaw (prop), I knew we would have a great time just looking around. I was first introduced to this shop last year when I needed a fun animal costume for an event I was attending. My kids had such a great time coming with me to pick out my sexy raccoon get up, so we decided to have a city costume adventure this year and brought them in to check out all the cool costumes and props. Though some of them are a bit on the grown up or *naughty* side, the stop here is worth the trip from the North Shore. There is absolutely something for every age here. And, take note, the costumes are well made - not like grabbing something from your local party store. You will pay for quality here, but it's truly worth it. They also have a costume rental department, so you might be able to go that route too. Aside from just costumes, you'll find all the props and accessories you need to pull it all off. Let's go over my costumes that I have gotten at Chicago Costume over the years: 2008: Wolverine full costume with foot long metal claws / Immortal from 300 2007: Zorro 2006: Roman Legionnaire with three foot long shield 2005: Samurai outfit with Kabuki theater mask and twelve pieces of armor This year courtesy of Brandie T, I will be Link from Legend of Zelda. Despite her expert costume designing skills, I still needed accessories lest I ask her to learn how to mold plastic and become a blacksmith. Needing the right weapons for my Halloween costume, I contacted Chicago Costume and asked them if they had the proper shield with that Hyrulian crest from the Legend of Zelda. I was disappointed when I was informed that they didn't have the shield, but was more than elated when they told me they would custom order it and sent me a link so I could look it over. After rolling over to Chicago Costume, I was able to grab my custom ordered Hyrulian shield, the proper swordbelt to strap a three foot long sword on my back, and a blonde wig along with pointy ears to play the part of Link for Halloween. Whenever I head into Chicago Costume, I am amazed by their selections and always secondguess myself and want to be something else for Halloween! They had great costumes from Watchmen, the Karate Kid (which I would have been, but I simply can't go Halloween without weapons), and of course the Michael Jackson outfits, my favorite pop star of the 1980's. If I had a pooch I am sure I would grab one of their dog costumes and set my poochie up right! The rental section downstairs carries a robust rack of metal swords, heavy armor, and some toy pistols that I am always tempted to try out. If I wanted, I could have been Chewbacca or Boba Fett for Halloween, but this is so a Star Trek kind of year, which explains my Spock ears that will be counting as elf ears. read more

Helpful staff and tons to keep you occupied if you're going without a plan for what you're going to grab. The outdoor area is a bit on the cold side, but it's a small price to pay for extra costume real estate! Either they have amazing costumes in stock, or they will work with me to build things piece by piece. A few seconds later, I was asked what I was looking for and walked over to the section that had my costuming needs...the team member didn't just point and say "down there". The team member also inquired what I would be needing the wig for and offered some info and suggestions for additional pieces to my costume. They have a huge stock of Mehron, Ben Nye, Cinema FX, and other professional brands that hold up far better for costuming and photoshoots than drugstore or Sephora brands. Even better, the people who work at the makeup counter are genuinely knowledgeable and kind -- one spent more than twenty minutes helping me find just the right Mehron cream shade and sealant for my purposes. Chicago Costume is my new Nordstrom. Forget designer handbags and snooty b*tches at the makeup counter, I'm trading it all in for latex animal masks, faux facial wounds, and slutty pickle costumes... which are apparently a thing... and by 'apparently' I obviously mean 'thankfully.' So I'm throwing this big-ass bash with a few coworkers of mine tonight and it just so happens to be animal themed... and by 'just so happens', I actually mean that if they didn't agree to do that theme I would've pitched a major fit and probably gone all Bridezilla on their asses until I got my way. Luckily, we were able to avoid all that nastiness since they're both pretty easy going and I'm a stubborn ass... which is also a costume they sell here, in case you were wondering. So I perused their website a little before going in, but found myself having a bit of a tough time searching for what I needed, mostly because I really wasn't sure myself. Then I walked into Chicago Costume and it was as if the gates of heaven opened up and their light shone down upon me... in the form of about 100 different species of animal masks made of latex, rubber, and plastic. It was both glorious and life changing as I've found myself growing tired of applying makeup to my mug whenever I go out into public and want to be acknowledged as a normal human being who does a moderately decent job of hiding what without makeup looks like the face of the old lady landlord from the movie Kingpin (#TRUTH). But now, thanks to Chicago Costume, I've come to realize that I don't need to wear all that make-up to look human... because human is boooring and I'd rather be a beast instead. Yes, you need to bring it back...but let's face it, are you ever going to wear a Halloween costume twice? NO. TONS of flapper dresses, Elvis jumpsuits, and period/era costumes! Need a Sexy Mrs. Santa outfit? Additional fabric needed for regular Mrs. Santa costume. Elf wear? Dirty Elf wear? Many, many costumes for themed Parties and Masquerade Balls. They even have lingerie and a naughty section for those fun nights. Hellllooo naughty fairy!! Plus they carry all the accessories and make up necessary for you costume. As for Halloween, Chicago Costume was smart enough to rent out space in Andersonville for a month. There used to be an advert on TV saying. "Phone first. You'll always know." That is what I did. I phoned first. It was a waste of time and energy and money. I called yesterday asking for - what I thought - was a petty simple costume to rent. I am looking for a Ralph Kramden costume. Kate in rental said it would be no problem. She gave me a good price. She said come in tomorrow and ask for me and we'll get it set up. I walked in this evening and asked the young lady behind the counter if Kate was around. She said, "Yes. She's downstairs." She politely walked me to the staircase. Upon descending the stairs - i saw a young woman sewing. "Are you Kate?" I asked. "No, I'm Emily," came the reply. There was another woman behind a computer. "Kate's not here," that woman said. The second woman was none to happy that I had actually walked into her place with the intention of spending money. Now before I go any further - I want to point out that I am not petite. I would not be looking for a Ralph Kramden costume if I was built like Ed Norton. Emily and the other woman did a google image check to get a few ideas about the look. The other woman - a gloomy soul - kept saying it would be difficult because the hat was going to be impossible to find. She was really focused on the hat and the knowledge that they wouldn't find it. In the meantime Emily scurried back and forth bringing our military jackets and other types of jackets that were not even in the ball park. The ones that might have been workable were for a nine-year old child. She could look at me and see I couldn't use those jackets as an oven mitt, but she kept bringing them out. Then they got the bright idea to call their "warehouse" except they couldn't figure out the phone. I just walked out. 90 minutes of travel time and looking at wrong jackets time wasted. $2.00 in the meter wasted. Gasoline wasted. What did I get for my attempts to become a customer with this business? I got a headache. I will never return there. I will never send people there. read more
