If you need costumes for a show, they do a decent job. Sometimes they really hit the mark, mostly on shows that they designed the costume plot, but they do a decent job and the price is decent. So when you need to put together a show and are with a historical costume expert and a troupe of designers where do you go? Well to Broadway of course! Disclaimer regarding service: I was there with someone Broadway knows quite well so we didn't have any problems with service so I cannot speak for any other experience. The rentals they have are incredibly accurate, complete and well put together. We had a show to showcase fashion and each segment started with a trip to the 'past'. 5 historical rentals later and arm fulls of accessories for our models that we purchased we were on our way. We were like kids in a candy store and I could have EASILY spent $500 or more on 'stuff'. I did get me the coolest tricorner, a top hat, and a walking stick that over time keep on getting used over and over. read more

I am a director with an rather-large educational outreach program; we work with both a large local theater company and the largest state-funded after school program provider in Illinois. We are currently launching a production and searching for costumes to rent. I attempted to fill out an order form with Broadway Costumes for a rental, and was puzzled that there wasn't a button at the bottom of the online form to submit it. So I called to speak to a representative---AND WOW. I've never been treated so poorly by representatives in all the years I have done business!!! First of all, I was transferred three times by people who clearly did not want to deal with my issue. If you are not interested in actually speaking with customers, I suggest you do not list a phone number to be contacted at. Secondly, I was being informed that their website does not have mobile capacities--for any business NOT to allow people to operate via a smart phone, but rather insist on PC usage, is ludicrous in this day and age. Finally, the 'representative' I was able to speak to (for more than three sentences) insisted that nobody in the building had the capacity to manually assist me in costume rental; rather, they insisted that I somehow locate a PC and fill out the form. The man asked me why I'd been transferred to him (I have no idea why, as he wasn't even vaguely interested in being helpful) and continually interrupted/cut me off, insisting that nobody would be able to help me with a rental quote. When I asked for a Sales or a Rental Department he insisted that 'we don't sell costumes' and then proceeded to 'mansplain' to me that 'show rentals mean you cannot keep the costumes'---YES, that's sort of what the word 'rental' implies!!! My outreach has rented from MANY local businesses, from costumes to props to backdrops. We produce at least three large productions a year. I myself am a professional performer in the Chicagoland area, as well as a producer and director. I can GUARANTEE I will not be using their services, nor will I recommend ANY of the theater professionals I work with to do so either. read more

Love, love, love this place. I ended up at Broadway Costumes in search of a stellar Halloween costume. Did I get it? You bet! Despite being there the week before Halloween, the staff was extremely helpful. I gave them an idea of what I was looking for and they made great suggestions. I tried on a few costumes before leaving with a full length chicken costume complete with orange shoe covers. While $50 might seem like a lot to some, when you consider that you'd easily pay a couple hundred dollars to buy the costume (and only to wear it once), it's not a bad deal. read more

This place has a good selection of high quality costumes at a fair price, but I will say I had a very uncomfortable customer service experience today. I am an industry professional and had expected more respectful treatment. Alas. The attitude I got from the woman helping me left me wanting to talk with the management, but I got a sense that she's not the only one who let's her customers know they annoy her. If you deal with Broadway, you must be very clear with your order, or else deal at your own peril. read more

We are a high school in the northwest suburbs in Chicago. We have had good and bad luck over the last 12 years with Broadway costumes, but recently have noticed a change in how they do business. They used to do a great job of making sure we had the costumes we needed on time for our Dress Rehearsals. It seems that they have changed their rules and now will not give out costumes for a performance until 2:00 p.m. on the Monday before the performance. If you leave their warehouse at this time heading anywhere in the Chicago area you will be luck to make it back in three hours. In asking to have the costumes on the Saturday before, we were told that it would be an additional cost of $1600 on top of the additional $8,000 we would be paying to rent 180 costumes.This seems like a hefty fine for wanting the costumes the weekend earlier. All the other costume companies we have dealt with make sure you have the costumes on the Friday before a performance. I am amazed that this company is doing so well that they won't adjust their timetable for anyone. I do not understand how they stay in business, and are willing to give up $8,000 for a rule. read more

I recently rented 2 costumes from Broadway, for an event we attended. I called to ask about shipping costs, told them where I lived and was informed it would be about $30. As the website states, I gave as many measurements as I could on the form I faxed to them. One costume was fine, there were no problems with it and it worked well. However, the other came without 2 key pieces. When I called to ask about them, I was told they assumed I wanted the less expensive version of the costume even though one of the two missing pieces is common to both versions. They said they still had time that day and could ship the missing items. I thought that was great so I agreed. I still don't understand why they didn't call me to clarify what I wanted since I gave the item number for the more expensive costume. The common missing item was fine but the other item was huge and would not work - the waist was at least a 36 and the measurements for that costume were for a 30 inch waist. There was no option to even come close to wearing it. When I asked about it the following business day, I was told they would discuss it with the manager and let me know. The response the next day was that, since they are shipped it out and the costume was therefore complete, they could not compensate me for the fact it didn't work. Since, I've gotten 3 receipts for charges. One was for the less expensive item, the second costume and a $40 shipping charge. I was never informed it would be $40 to ship, not $30, which prompts me to now wonder if it was a teaser rate. The second was for the missing item and $65 for shipping, more than double the expected delivery charge and again I was not informed I would be charged for the shipping to correct their oversight. The third charge was for $41 pickup charge. If this is how they handle customer service for a small order, I wonder how they handle problems for theater companies. I didn't give my credit card information so they could go on a spending spree at my expense. I didn't expect them to make assumptions about my order and I didn't expect to pay for their mistakes. I guess I learned a painful lesson in the real cost of renting from Broadway. read more
