My first experience with Rack Solid and the guys over there was great, I was in need of a cargo rack for the top of my Subaru. Had my adventure vehicle back in a few hours and got to break in the rack properly that same day! My last visit was to the shop was for attachment pieces to a roof bike rack. I did not have the proper attachments for a solid mount to the tube of the roof rack. I was fortunate enough to meet Sasha and his loyal, furry companion August. Sasha helped me figure out the attachment I needed and luckily had a few in the shop. I went home, got my Mountain Bike loaded up and headed for some single track. This place rocks! I was looking for a 2" receiver hitch plus installation, gave Rack Solid a call. Store mgr, Sasha, informed me that hitch for my car was in stock and could be installed that day if I was ready. Was I ever. Headed down to the 3rd street location where rack was professionally installed within an hour. As a bonus, Sasha walked and talked me through bike rack options with my buying his recommendation, even though I had great success with my previous rack which is the brand I didn't buy. While there, a couple came in thinking they had an appointment which unfortunately was for next week. Sasha was able to guide them into leaving their car which he would take care of when done with mine. I mention this as a good example of positive customer service which is lacking in all too many establishments. Store is small, a bit crowded but has plenty of inventory displayed,and has most needed items in stock. Do not go to this place! I spoke with Nick on 5/31 very explicit on what I wanted -Tow Hitch on a new 2016 vehicle I leased over the memorial weekend. Nick quoted me $319 installed, I told him I would confirm with my wife and call back the next day. I called 6/01 and spoke with Hunter, Nick was unavailable. I repeated the same specifics and found out (according to Hunter) Nick gave me the wrong quote for the my vehicle. Now the cost would be $350...Hunter expressed "...yeah it's a big whooping $30 bucks...". If I would have ordered the tow hitch it would have been wrong and I would have had to pay an extra $30 bucks! to correct an oversite by Rack Solid! Rack Solid: Not everyone who works/lives in SF thinks $30 BUCKS IS A NO BIGGIE! So I'm going to express my experience to both of my work places in SF and my wife's work in SF how customers in SF are not appreciated! To John B.: Thanks for your message 6/03. To clarify: I didn't indicate two vehicles...Nick gave me the wrong info. When I called back to order and clarify my potential purchase the next day, Hunter indicated "...Nick must of quoted you the wrong vehicle, happens all the time...". What a great outfit! I've bought 4 racking systems from these guys over the years. The quality of service they provide is equal to the quality of the products they sell. They know their stuff and do a great job with super fast installation. My latest interaction was when a Thule rear mounted rack I purchased two years ago froze up just as we were leaving for a family trip. They said bring it in and they will help get it in shape. Very quickly they decided the best thing was to just give me a new model as a replacement. No charge and I would up with a better unit. I didn't even have to ask. All said, this pales compared to a few years back when I drove into a garage with the bikes on top. Aside from impressively damaging our car and killing a bike I mangled our roof rack pretty badly. Not only did Rack help me to salvage components of our old rack, but they did this with nary a snicker which was was great given how stupid I felt (not to mention how stupid I actually was.) read more

These guys are great. I've driven by this place so many times just noticing their catchy name but never stopped by. Today i dropped by needing help to re install my Yakima roof rack after i had my car painted. It was easy to take off but def not as easy to put back on. I didn't buy my rack from them but they where still very helpful. I was missing a pad for my Q tower which i had planned to buy from them but they didn't have. They did however make one for me out of a different Q tower pad and then helped me install it. Both guys that where working def gave off a laid back Cali surfer type vibe which I found very cool. They didn't want any money from me for their help but i gave them some money to buy lunch. It was the least i could do. If you need a roof rack I'd def recommend these guys. The Rack Solid guys were very helpful when I went in for a replacement surf rack. They gave good advice, worked quickly and instantly fixed a flaw (from the components rather than their work). The staff is also remarkably nice. They answered questions and even gave me a small tool to make removal or adjustment of a bike rack. Best of all, they avoided the technical expert experience of making customers feel like dumbasses (see most music staff). I am so happy I choose Rack Solid to install my Stealth hitch. Stealth only recently released a hitch for my car. Stealth assured me it would fit. Well, apparently the instructions were 99% wrong. Thankfully, the Rack Solid team knows their stuff and were able to install it. Maybe the racks are Solid, the customer service from last time I was in this shop and when I wrote a 5 star review, changed dramatically! Spoke over the phone with employee named Morgen asking for a ski box. They had 2 in stock that I was interested in. Drove all the way to the store where one of the boxes was shown to me and offered even at discount being also a floor box. At my request to see the other box before I make my mind, I was told that he will not bring the other from the back. I mentioned that I am serious about buying one but I want to make an informed decision and compare the 2 side by side. Then Morgen started to be unfriendly telling me that he will only bring the second one out if I pay for it in full and Nonrefundable! I asked to talk to a manager and I had to call the store in Berkeley in order to get in touch with Christian. The conversation felt more like negotiation for me to see that box in the store :" I'm not the manager of that store particularly and all I can do is to ask - if they don't wanna show it to you, than that's how is going to be" Walked back in telling Morgan that I am deeply disappointed on how he handled business with a customer that was there to spend money and that I will write a review about this. Just so he can tell me "don't give a crap, this is my last day here, I don't care" If anyone in the leadership of this store is interested to see a recording of the incident, there is one available. These guys are really solid, honest, customer-first people. 3 years ago they got racks (+surf attachment) on my Prius and it was fast and the racks didn't whistle at all. Fast forward to this month when I bought an audi allroad. Came back and got racks on (RockyMounts) but found that they whistled after getting on the freeway. Returned to RackSolid where they tweaked the setup, but ultimately they still whistled. Long story short, the guys helped me get a new system (Whispbars) that are silent and I love them and I could not be happier. Every encounter I've had with Rack Solid has been great. I'd like to recognize Ricardo in particular for his help with a recent problem. I've had my Thule roof rack for about 7 years, and recently it had loosened up and started to rattle. I tried own my own to uninstall the rack and then tighten it back up, but in doing so I broke the tension lever that secures the roof to the car. Oops. Then I did the same thing. Excellent. So now I had two broken parts and a roof rack that was even looser than before. I searched online for replacement parts for the broken lever, which was tough to do because I was unsure of the actual model I purchased back in 2009. Before I ordered any parts online, though, I decided to call down to Rack Solid to see if they might have parts and if they could do the repair for me. It was a simple job, but I screwed it up previously, so maybe I should defer to experts? I spoke with Ricardo, who was very patient as I tried to explain what model of rack I might have. He asked me to email him photos of the rack and the part so that he could confirm what they could do. I was in luck--Ricardo had the parts in stock and said I could come down anytime and he could take care of the repair. A few days later I got down to the shop. Ricardo remembered the issue, pulled the parts, and showed me how to replace the levers without breaking them. Problem solved! Except the rack is a little old, and even with the new levers tightened up there was still some play on one side. Ricardo thought to put a little bit of velcro padding on the rail to snug up the fit, and voila: no rattle! Thanks to Rack Solid and Ricardo for the attention and care they put into such a minor repair. I will continue to give these guys my business. read more

Rack Solid is a pretty "solid". I needed a surfboard attachment for the standard factory installed roof rack. The Audi attachment only held 1 board, and I usually bring 3 to the beach. Anyway, I came here and they got my set up quickly. I came back just yesterday because the screws they used didn't allow the sunroof to open. The guys at Rack Solid took at least an hour to grind the screws down to the perfect length. That is great customer service, and no charge for all that work. Great place. read more

No more stuffing the MTB in the back of the car with the seats down. Those days are O-V-E-R. Read it....over. As in done. Flat out over. As with all other services: 1. Quality of workmanship/Knowledge 2. Timeliness and Communication 3. Attitude As someone who likes to know a little bit of detail about what I am getting into gear wise, I usually do a little bit of homework up front. Hey, this stuff is expensive, so know what you are doing/getting seems to make a bit of sense. Nothing I like better than heading into a shop and having the guys that work there be so dialed up that you can briefly tell them what you want and they immediately dial you in to 3 options, explain the pricing, explain the deltas between the options and answer any other questions for you. Rack Solid knows your car, knows their racks, and can set you up with info, help you make a decision, and get you going fast. These guys are awesome. This is a _well_run_business_. These guys know what they are doing...they can and will answer questions (directly and succinctly)...and have high quality merchandise (in stock and a lot of it). Was in the shop for 15 minutes, discussed the options, paid my bill...had them install it (took `em less than an hour) and was on my way . Install $'s are worth it...you wanna be dealing with installing your own rack? Like when your new bike goes flying off the roof? Let these guys do it... As the 5-starts reflect, my experience with Rack Solid was "As Good As it Gets!" I needed a hitch for a Mercedes SUV and between my first call to installation the Rack Solid team (thanks especially to Sasha!) delivered seamless, timely and consistent customer service. Here were my steps to success: 1. They had to special order my hitch but it came in only 3 days and on the date they stated it would. 2. They called when they received the hitch and made an appointment two days later for installation (just like they said they would). 3. Install occurred on the weekend (they even called to say I could come earlier if I wanted due to a cancellation), the install took 2 hours (exactly what they told it would and I took off as a happy camper! Did way too much online research on cargo racks for my car, so I decided to cut through all the online info overload and head to Rack Solid. Nick was extremely friendly and helpful. He explained to me the differences between all the different racks, walked me through the pricing, and was patient with the plethora of questions I came in with. Who knew cargo racks was such a complicated item to purchase?! He even humored us by putting different racks on the car so we could see how they looked. I'm all for saving a few bucks by buying online, but I'm more interested in spending a few more to get a great customer experience like this. Looked everywhere for a roof cargo box. REI, Sports Basement, etc. were all no help. I searched online and most sites had a 4-6 week delivery time, and no customer support. I almost gave up and then I called Rack Solid. They answered on the second ring, answered all my questions, had the Yakima cargo box I was looking for (that nobody else had), let me purchase it over the phone, and held it for me. A few days later I swung by to pick it up. Without even asking, they took it out of the box and mounted it on my rack, gave me a brief tutorial, and sent me on my way. The place just rocks. I bought Thule cross bars from someone on craigslist and a fit kit online. It was my first time ever putting a rack on and saw there were gaps between the plastic of the crossbar feet and the rubber of the fit kit podium. I was worried that I did something wrong and would lose all my gear on some highway, so I came to this place 10 minutes before closing to get it checked out. The guy (James? Josh?) stayed after closing to help me out. He made sure it was installed correctly and tightened some screws without charge. I am so grateful I stumbled upon Rack Solid today!! We recently purchased a Yakima skybox that trapped me in a parking garage! An angel with pliers saw me struggling and helped me remove the skybox, but we lost a barrel nut in the process. I did not believe we were going to be able to resolve this before our drive across 4 states and prayed my visions of worst case scenarios wouldn't come true!. **AWESOME** Talked with Eric (the installer) at length over the phone about an Inno rooftop box for our car. We were looking for a particular make, model, and colour (white) that Rack Solid had in their showroom (the only other one was in Santa Monica). He spent time answering my questions, and concerns, and added his insights and knowledge. I want to say from the time of our arrival to the time of our departure it was less than an hour. Eric installed the cargo box in the pouring rain. Poor guy . But only seemed like minutes??? Sweet The gentleman that helped us (I'm so sorry I forgot your name) was nice, helpful, and knowledgeable about the Inno product line. Made us feel right at home while we waited. Really happy with the entire experience. We previously had a cargo box that was too noisy at highway speeds; this Inno 624 was noticeably quieter which is what we we're aiming for since it will be on 24/7. Last year, as my friend and I were about to hit the road to Burning Man, we discovered that my old bike rack would definitely not last the journey. We panicked and then discovered this amazing resource! We drove our car over to them with the sketchy rack and they unloaded everything off the back of the car, to help us set up the new one they would install for us. Alas, the tire wrench was buried under all of our stuff, so they helped us unload the ENTIRE CAR, that was packed to the roof! They were incredibly generous and patient with us and not only installed the rack, but helped us reload the car and the bikes onto the new rack. They were so cool about helping us out, as they clearly saw how stressed we were. Then, today, when I realized that my city bike wouldn't fit on that rack, I brought it over and they sold me an adapter and showed me how to load the bike with it. Again, the guy that was holding down the shop all by himself was very patient and thorough and made sure I was a happy customer before sending me on my way. I would highly recommend using these guys! I recently went by Rack Solid because I had lost a specific type of allen wrench that I needed to take off my Thule Ski rack. I am new to San Francisco, and I didn't really know where to go to find such a tool. I first went by one of the larger chain outdoor stores, but they did not have what I was looking for. So they recommended I go see Nick over at Rack Solid. I then went over to Rack Solid, and told Nick what I was looking for. He took the time to search through his own collection of tools, as well as through his Thule inventory, and ultimately he found what I was looking for. I asked him if I owed him anything for his trouble, and he was nice enough to just let me have the tool. I am writing this review because I was very pleased with the service I received from the people at Rack Solid, and it seems they run a good operation. The customer service at Rack Solid fits the name... SOLID. I went to Sports Basement to get a bike rack and after waiting 15 mins for service I was told to go check out the very random pile of boxes for all the varies racks they had. So I left SB and went to REI. Once again the wait was long however the racks were at least on display to look and touch. After seeing the wait to get help would be lengthily, I departed for Rack Solid where I had purchased my roof rack and basket. Not sure why I did not start there other than I was in a hurry and SB and REI were closer to my house. Let me just say that the extra time it took to get to Rack Solid was worth every min. I was greeted when entering the store and did not feel any pressure to make a purchase. I immediately got the service I was looking for... someone to answer my questions and help me install the rack. I then went home to load our bikes and discovered some issues. So I drove the car with bikes in tow back to RS and Ian spent over half hour helping me sort out the issues. I was so impressed with this service. Old fashion service is what I would call it and I highly recommend that you use Rack Solid when making purchases for racks and such. The guys at Rack Solid where wonderfully helpful and knowledgeable! They had originally installed the roof rack in my Nissan Sentra back in 2013 and did a great job. Of course living in the Sunset district of SF things get rusty, so when I needed to repair the bolts on the bike rack and a hinge on my old Adventurer storage box I called them and went in the same day and within an hour the job was done at a very reasonable price and everything was secure for our Family trip to Yosemite.
