Rack Solid is great, I might even say, (wait for it) they're solid as a rack! First of all, they specialize only in car racks for bikes, surf boards, skis and snowboards - so they have the widest array of racks you can imagine. Second of all, because they only deal with racks, they know how to install any rack on any car and can do so quickly and courteously. Lastly, and this is the best part; astonishingly great customer service. Case in point; I bought a trailer hitch and hitch-mountain bike rack for my 2010 VW Jetta TDI Wagon. It had low-clearance to begin with and the hitch and rack often scrape the pavement when I am backing out. Even though I bought the rack several months ago, Nick was super cool about taking the hitch and the rack back, applying full credit to a new aesthetically pleasing and aerodynamic roof rack, the "Whisperbar", which is completely badass and upon which I am completely stoked. This rack doesn't stick out like some whacky-ass contraption, rather, it subtly blends in with the nice lines of my car. If you need a rack, this is the place to go. I'm relatively new to cycling, but have been riding long enough to know that trying to fit my bike in the trunk was not an ongoing option. Sasha walked me through all of the options (roof, hitch, trunk) and the pros/cons of each one, as well as the different brands. Although I didn't think I would pick a roof rack (since I have to hoist the bike up and I'm not very tall), it ended up being the best choice for me/my car. They are efficient but still take the time to answer your questions thoroughly and knowledgeably, without pressuring you for a sale. So I just recently moved into the SF bay area. I purchased a Thule rack before I moved out here. I installed in myself and ran into some problems with the air deflector so it had been sitting in the truck of my trunk for a couple of months. I figured I would go over to Rack Solid and see if they could figure out what I had done wrong. They took a look and help me reset the air deflector and it has been perfect ever sense. I asked them what I owed them for helping me out and they didn't charge me dime. These guys are great. If I ever need accessories for my Thule rack I will defiantly go back to these guys. I recently moved from the East Coast to San Francisco and my car was delivered with my Yakima Front Loader roof racks all skewed and misaligned (damn pot holes). I've tried my best to use the keys I've had to undo the lock to no avail, and even brought it to REI where it was originally purchased from. Their advice was to go to a locksmith and have them drill out the cores. Sad, and frustrated I happened to see RACK SOLID on 3rd Street, 15 minutes from where I live! I drove up and these guys are super nice! I was ready to purchase new locking cores, but both guys worked on the rack and loosened up the cores! They even fixed my crossbar!!! I was so relieved that I didn't have to purchase new locking cores. My next car roof bike racks will definitely be purchased from this place. read more

I had a very solid experience here. :) I have to say that this is not my favorite area of the city to drive (and park!) in, but I had the foresight to give them a call when I was close by and was told it was fine for me to block their driveway (obviously ask first!). This made it easy to show them my current rack system - a 6 year old Thule one, which had fit my previous SUV that was totaled less than year ago (by a red light runner in SF- fun times!). After a few short minutes consulting the computer he was able to inform me that I could in fact reuse most of my system and he could fit it to my new SUV (which had absolutely nothing on the roof to attach too) just by ordering a couple of parts. I happily paid the cost for the parts and installation, and was informed I would get a call in a few days to set up installation. True to their word, I received a call a few days later and set up installation for the following day. Installation took about 45 min, and I now have my racks all set up for the ski season! It is most likely key to be able to go on a weekday; I was the only customer both times I went. But honestly, you have to be strategic with everything in SF. I'm very happy I got to retrofit my older racks to my new SUV, and only spent around $300 for the new footers/fit kit/installation. Thanks! read more

I discovered Rack Solid today and was pleasantly surprised! Place was recommended by a staff member at REI, because they did not carry the part. Very easy to find and there is a small park a couple of blocks away, with 2h-parking zone, more than needed. Friendly and knowledgeable staff: Ricardo helped me with a free used rubber strip to replace a lost one on my Thule Aerobar. Problem solved in a jiffy! You can drive your car in the shop and there is a big bench to prepare the racks. Totally pros and ready. The place carries the parts for the major players in the field, Thule, Yakima, Whispbar, but also some brands I did not know. They also have colored parts, for the ones amongst us who really need to be different! I visited the website and it's a mine: very easy to browse and it looks like everything is there. Got a hitch for my first non-trunk bike rack installed last week by Josh. The installation was super quick (20 min instead of the two hours they had estimated over the phone), and then he helped me pick a rack, pointing out the different features on their sales display and even testing out a couple different ones in the new hitch to demonstrate the hatch clearance. A friend gave me on old Thule bike rack, unfortunately he had lost the keys. I was headed out of town that day so I started a mad scramble to either make a key or find a shop that had a key. My first call was to a local REI, they offered no help and acted like they had never heard of a roof rack in their life. Second call was to an "authorized dealer" REI, again, came up empty, no solution, no ideas on how to get a key. I was ready to give up on finding the key and called a locksmith, the only guy on their team that could rekey the lock was out on calls for the remainder of the day, cost to rekey $40. Sigh, this wasn't going to work as I was headed out of town in a few hours. Back to the internet and I found rack solid via the manufacturers website as an authorized installer, and remembered driving by their shop, figured it was worth it to give them a call. They asked for the lock code and let me know they had the key in stock -- SWEEEETTTT. I headed down and go to their shop, they met me at the door with a smile and a "did you call about the key", why yes I did. They went to grab the key for me, on the way there asked how many keys I needed, I responded with a "1, I guess" -- dude gave me an -- are you sure look -- and asked "how many keys do you have", to which I sadly responded "zero". He went and grabbed me two keys. I pulled out my wallet and he told me to put it away, keys are free!! NICE! I walked back out to my car and looked at my self installed rack and figured it would be worth asking him to inspect for me. He walked out to the street, inspected my install, told me to tighten a bolt, and jogged back into his shop to help another customer. No money ever exchanged hands, but he treated me like a customer. Made me want to buy a new rack. Awesome service, huge selection, quality business. the end. read more

This is my first ever Yelp review. I normally wouldn't bother but this needs to be shared. DO NOT STEP FOOT IN THIS PLACE. Obnoxious dude behind the counter (the white guy.) I first walked up to the counter, and a la an 80's movie douchebag warning the waiter to make his milkshake extra thick, he sneers, "They're two people ahead of you." I say ok and wander around the store. I make my way back up to the counter and the other sales guy says to me, "Yes?" I say I'm interested in a rack system and I have my car pulled up into the shop so you could take a look at my options. I can come back another time for the install. Douchebag-guy butts in saying, "We need to start on another car before yours." I'm taken aback. And offended. I shot back at him, "I"m asking him a question. About a roof rack. But I can leave." Which I did. This is a friggin roof rack store. Am I supposed to beg or cow tow for this ass-wipe to do his job. Or more importantly to display common courtesy. To be clear MOST OBNOXIOUS AND RUDE SALESPERSON I've come across. Maybe he's going through a divorce. Or his dog died. Who knows. (Products I saw in the shop looked decent enough. Thank you Rack Solid! We purchased a Yakima cargo on 2/15/13, the price was good, a gentleman helped mount it on our car, and the service was great. All the 5 star rating and reviews you see here are right on. However, if we could give them 10 stars, we would for what they did AFTER the sale. We received a phone call about an hour after we got home from the gentleman who sold us the cargo. He called to apologize for overcharging us about $100 and that he would immediately credit our card which he did. Apparently, it was on sale and we didn't know about it and we would have never known about it. We agreed on the price and we paid it so he really had no obligation to give us the refund except for their honesty and integrity. Now, that's character! Rock Solid Integrity! Purchased the Thule Transporter box from here. The price was competitive and they were able to get it from their Berkeley store promptly. However, the assembly was shoddy. The tilt handle was put on upside down and the license plate lights are held on with the wrong screws and was not connected to the wiring. It dropped off while I was driving home, luckily 1 screw held it on so I was able to reinstall it. And they dropped the box on the ground while trying to mount the box on the receiver. I had to take the whole thing apart and put it together myself. If you are going to charge for assembly, at least do it correctly. Buy from this place for the price, but skip the assembly. read more
