Murky abandoned fish tank adds to the vibe
    Andy M.

My favourite fish and chips place in Etobicoke! From the dated 70's decor - including murky fish tank built into the counter and framed and signed Captain Highliner photo on the wall - this place is a living time capsule! But I come for the food and IMO the have the best Halibut and chips in the area. Kingsway Fish and chips is a close second, and has a much nicer interior, but for a workday lunch - this is my pick!

    As trad as it gets.

Excellent fresh and crispy halibut and chips - never greasy - and the best homemade gravy ever!

Yummy. Fried food with none of that greasy heaviness. Well done!! Halibut on the roll was great. Friendly service.

I'm so with Liz B. on this one - I will never buy seafood anywhere else. The store is a pretty decent size, very, very clean and does NOT smell like fish. The servers are so polite and helpful and I noticed all the patrons were civilized; there was no pushing, shoving or yelling; everyone just politely waited their turn. They have another store in St. Lawrence Market which we've been to on numerous occasions but, being from Etobicoke and all the closures on the Gardiner, this is far more convenient. It's on Vansco, a side street that runs off North Queen but, for those of you who aren't too familiar with the area, you can catch it off the Queensway (very close to IKEA). I could see this being convenient for those of you in east Mississauga. You won't have trouble with parking as they have a private lot. I paid with debit but I'm sure they accept most major credit cards. They have frozen shrimp, scallops, lobster tails, etc. in all sizes. I also recall seeing cans of crabmeat and smoked salmon as well. As for the fresh fish, there was sea bass, grouper, catfish, swordfish, sole, tuna, etc. - lots to choose from. The tuna looked like it was sushi grade. They also had an array of fresh shell fish as well such as oysters, mussels, huge scallops and shrimp. For the pre-made food, some of the selections were stuffed sole, some awesome looking crab-stuffed calamari and I saw a stuffed salmon (very similar looking to what Costco sells). They also have specialty groceries on a separate side but I was on my lunch break so I didn't have too much time on my hands to browse. Anyway, I bought six calamari tubes with a whole bunch of tentacles for $10.25 and six large, fresh shrimp for $3.95 - great deal!

Food was so good I forgot to take more photos!…read more We visited LaVinia last week for dinner. We ordered the grilled chorizo and ham croquettes tapas. The ham croquettes were delicious and paired with an amazing garlic aioli. The grilled chorizo was also great but the garlic aioli muted the chorizo taste unfortunately. We also had the arugula and pear salad which was topped with Stilton cheese. We really enjoyed it. For our main course, we ordered the seafood paella which was amazing and everything was cooked perfectly. We also enjoyed the mango cheesecake and lemon sorbet for dessert. The restaurant is tightly packed, intimate, and has a great atmosphere for a date night dinner or dinner with friends. The waiters were attentive and very helpful when ordered. The chef also came around near the end of our dinner to ask how our meal was.

Food: (5 stars) Tapas: - Croquetas de Iberico: Iberico Croquettes with Basil Oil - $18.95 (5 stars): My favorite thing on the menu, so creamy and tasty. - Mejillones al Vapor: Fresh Mussells Steamed in Spanish Beer - $15.75 (5 stars) My very close second favorite thing on the menu: amazing taste of the sauce. - Croquetas de Cangrejo: Crab Croquettes with a Piquillo Pepper Aioli - $17.95 (4 stars) - They were good but not as good as other things on the menu. - Calamares a la Plancha: Grilled Calamari with Chilli oil - $16.75 (4.5 stars) IT is a tad spicy, but great flavour and texture. Would recommend it. - Carpaccio de Ternera: Veal Carpaccio with Manchego and Mushrooms - $19.75 (4.5 stars) Great flavour and overlapping of the flavours. - Cazuela de Espinacas - Baked Spinach with Goat Cheese - $17.75 (4.5 stars) Very tasty and great mixture of all the flavours. Mains: All the mains are very large, definitely for more than 1 person. - Paella Valenciana: Spanish Saffron Rice with Chorizo, Chicken and Seafood - $26.75 (5 stars) the best of the main meals, the chorizo was giving it a really nice kick. - Paella de Marisco: Spanish Saffron Rice with Shrimp, Calamari, Mussels, Scallops, Monkfish and Clams $29.75 (4.5 stars) - lots of seafood, it was good a tad too runny - Arroz Verde: Scallops, Asparagus, Porcini Mushrooms, Spinach and Pesto $32.75 (3.5 stars): it was good, but too many mixed flavours, would likely not order again. Ambiance: (5 stars) They have indoor and outdoor dining. Outdoor has a thick wooden fence around it, so you do not feel like you are sitting on the street. Service: (5 stars) Very friendly staff, very attentive.

They are doing a promo currently $50pp as its usually I believe $70pp. The interior is old school vibe church decoration feeling with some antique stuff. I'm here for the food and not much on the decor tbh. The spread is all laid out in a L format. Its not the typical buffet spread of having appetizers, mains and desserts and such. In fact, I didn't see any desserts but you can order for additional cost. Appetizers I guess are the salads... There were a few meat options there, but I was there for the seafood spread... They had octopus chunks, squid rings, shrimp, cold crab legs, lobster with tomalley, fish, mussels... Surprisingly, i thought the octopus, squid was quite good in taste and texture. The lobster was a bit tough like the old Mandarin buffet days with overcooked lobster but had tomalley to enjoy if you like that. Overall, I think its simple spread but enjoyable. For the promo price point its good. They also have live music performance as well. Better to go early so the food doesn't get cold and less crowded.

There was plenty of wait staff on site but communication between staff was quite poor. No one ever came by to see if we needed anything or to ask if we wanted additional drinks or the like. So we found ourselves having to constantly hail wait staff. A large portion of the weekend buffet was seafood. You would expect that when serving lobster and crab the tableware would include for seafood crackers. This is not the case. I asked for seafood crackers from two different wait staff and was advised they didn't have any. So I went to the matre d' and asked, she went into the back and brought some out for our table. If you serving lobster and crab, the restaurant should either provide crackers or pre- cut the claws ready to eat. With regard to the food, I would have thought they would have served some rolls or bread but we had to ask for this special. As well, most all the food was cold. So all in all, I expected more but a 3 star rating is about all I would give.

I don't like to chime in with negative comments but I lay in bed that evening, staring into the darkness trying to understand the experience I just had. If you're to believe the Google reviews, you're going to have the best bowl of ramen in your life. Unfortunately, you are not, and you're going to have waited 2 hours for it. I think the owner has cultivated this "worth the wait" setup as a clever marketing strategy, or maybe, just as clever, a system to minimize creating a frantic and stressful kitchen environment. I applaud the latter. We entered at 6:00 PM and received our appetizer at 7:29. Our ramen arrived at 8:05. As for the ramen itself, it was okay. Fried chicken in the broth was an odd choice. The pork was not good, dry and flavourless. After he served each table he thanked people for their patience and continued to mentioned the 2 hour wait time, almost with a badge of honour. Most of the wait was him chatting with patrons. All of the appetizers are fried, and after that he seemed to be assembly ramen bowls from prepared ingredients (the microwave was going nonstop deep into kitchen...) - nothing which should take 2 hours. "Worth the wait" is written all over the walls, perhaps it's the official slogan of Nobuya, but worth the wait it is not.
