The wild salmon croissant Benedict was genuinely excellent. On food alone, I'd happily come back. Unfortunately, the service made that unlikely. When we were seated, our server told us the table time limit was "an hour to an hour and a half." Fair enough. Most brunch spots give you a solid 90 minutes. But 50 minutes in, a different server advised us we had 10 minutes left. That's a 60-minute window, not the 90 we'd been quoted, and it wasn't framed as an apology or a one-off. Just a clipped warning. Being abruptly rushed out more than half an hour earlier than promised soured what should have been a really lovely morning with family who I hadn't seen in years. If you're popping in solo for a quick bite, the kitchen earns the trip. If you're hoping for an unhurried meal with people who actually matter to you, I'd look somewhere else. read more

We were in Calgary for a night for our Lake Louise trip. Before our road trip, we decided to come here. First off, parking is small af. You only have about 5 or 6 spaces since it seems like the rest of the spaces have a "no parking" sign in front of each space... wtf... The place was nicely decorated and quaint. Loved the vibe. We walked in at 8am, opening time, and there were two parties sitting already. We got seated and looked at the menu. Our waitress was very friendly and mentioned that the Queens Breakfast, and the Montreal Smoked Brisket were the popular dishes. I decided on the Omelette Al Tartufo and my wife decided on the Montreal Smoked Brisket with Poached Egg. The Omelette Al Tartufo was good. Had a good earthy taste of the truffle. They had truffle paste so a hint of real truffle was there. There was a bit of melted cheese in there but there was a good balance. My wife had the Montreal Smoked meat with poached egg, which was also good. Pastrami-like protein with a poached egg, presented in a croissant. Very good, but very filling. Came in on a Tuesday morning and the place was surprisingly packed. That also meant parking was kind of a struggle in the plaza. That bring said, the food was definitely worth. Our server, Ash, was on top of it and was super friendly. He recommended the Waffle Sandwich when I didn't know whether to choose that or the Sausage Bowl. His rec was top notch because the Waffle Sandwich was amazing. The waffle was soft, which made it easy to eat the fluffy eggs and the chorizo as well. Though the syrup made everything sticky at the end, it's definitely a dish I would try again. I also ordered one of the French toasts and it was also pretty solid. It had peanut butter, caramelized banana, and assorted fruits. Also lots of portraits of Queens adorn the walls, which is on its given the name. I always know when I come to Queens, I'm getting an incredible meal that will keep me full for hours. Queens was an amazing brunch spot! To drink, we each ordered a coffee: one cappuccino and one spanish latte, with the latter very sweet and creamy. For brunch, we shaded the brunch board which was the perfect size for two. It was delicious and satisfied every craving one could have for breakfast: yogurt, pancakes, waffles, fried chicken, sausage, bacon, eggs and potatoes. Came here because it was highly reviewed on yelp. Even though we were here by 9, it was still busy and full and we had to sit at the bar. I had the bison sausage scramble and tony had the queen's breakfast, which is a bit of everything. He loved it. My bison sauage scramble thing was ok but not quite to my taste. Unfortunately since tony was working later we could not try cocktails. Staff were feindly and our food ame fast. The other thing to note is there is little to no parking. Though located in an unassuming strip mall, this place was sooo cute and trendy. The menu was also so impressive that it was hard to decide what we wanted. It was brunch time so I went with the lox benedict with breakfast potatoes and salad. My friend ordered an affogato to start (which I found funny because it's dessert) She then ordered the Queen's Breakfast, which was basically a smorgasboard of yummy breakfast foods including lemon ricotta pancakes, an omelet, breakfast potatoes, fruit and more. Sooooo huge... We were both hungry. We devoured each of our meals and left barely any crumbs. It was sooo delicious and filling. We didn't order any cocktails but I did have a chai tea with oat milk and it was so cute that they gave me a little ramiken with ice cream- I was confused because why did this come with my chai tea but i loved it because ice cream. So I ate a little and put the rest in my tea, which was already deliciously creamy but was made even more creamy by the ice cream. Sooo yummy. Our waitress was adorable and so helpful. She was also inquisitive about our time in Canada because we told her that we were leaving the next day. Calgary, what the heck are we putting up with? Why are we letting restaurants treat us like we're in the way of them running their businesses? None of these behaviours are completely unique to Queens, but they were *all* here in one place. 1- When I put us on the waitlist, we were told that we had 15-30 min wait. Our table was ready within 10 mins, which was good. But, we only had 5 minutes to arrive otherwise we'd lose our table. Five minutes is a little unreasonable, no? Especially considering the parking situation. 2- There is practically no parking. I didn't count but I would estimate about 5 spots reserved for this restaurant. And there are people running across traffic on Edmonton Trail because they've had to park wherever they can...and probably within a 5 minute window. 3- When we finished our meals and sat with a coffee, our waiter came by and pulled the old "Can I get you anything else? Just the bill then?" trick. This drives me mad. It's bad enough when you're actually done. Today, we both still had full mugs of coffee. I asked if there was a rush and he revealed that he's being pressured to turn over our table. We were there for under an hour, still had coffee, and there were 10 other empty tables within my line of sight. Yes, I counted because we were being pressured to leave. 4- This one. Holy moly Calgary. We've got to take a stand about this. The minimum tip offered on their payment machine is 18%. Standard tipping is 15% in Canada and if the service is really outstanding, then you can add a few extra percent. This is clear exploitation of those who don't know Canadian standards, those with math disabilities, parents who don't have mental capacity to care for children and figure out the right tip, etc. It's exploitative. My friend and I both independently decided this would be our last trip here. It was absolutely ridiculous. How was the food? Who cares! read more

My newest breakfast place obsession and for a good reason. I had the Montreal Smoked Brisket Croissant Benedict ($22), with a maple chai latte ($8) and my boyfriend had the Nutella waffles ($17). The Nutella waffles were tasty, sweet and paired nicely with raspberries and bananas. Yes, it says strawberries on the menu, but we actually really enjoyed and preferred the raspberries with banana instead. The latte was absolutely delicious. While it didn't really taste like chai, I drank it so fast because of how good it tasted. Also, the fresh cinnamon leaf on top was beautiful. You can tell this place has baristas dedicated to making high quality lattes and drinks. Having delicious, unique and savoury drinks seriously elevates this place. Which makes it so great. The menu is vast. I saw such amazing looking food and drinks all over than I'm dying to try next. My Benedict was great. The croissant was fresh, soft, flakey and buttery. The brisket was good quality and flavourful on its own. The potatoes were fresh, deep fried and topped with this phenomenal spicy tomato sauce that I would kill for the recipe. Perfect dish honestly. This spot is heavily influenced by French cuisine. It's also extremely interesting to dine in. You walk in and it's unlike any other breakfast place you visit. There's chandeliers on the ceiling, tile flooring and portraits of queens on the walls. You feel like royalty. My only comment is that there was a missed opportunity to play instrumental versions of well known songs instead of ambience music. This spot lives up to the hype. But if you plan to visit, make a reservation a week in advance or arrive before 9:30. Otherwise, good luck getting a table. And arrive 10 minutes at least before hand, because finding parking was troublesome. read more

They totally lost their sparkle. They used to serve a brûlée orange upon seating, but now they charge for it. After a day of crap food while traveling I really needed some deep soul healing food, and this place, this little #mood place in the most unlikely of strip malls in Calgary stood for all that Canada is. Laisse-moi expliquer. I am not a waffle lover. I live in the US, where waffles are industrial grade and not for the faint of heart, we're talking molded bread product with grids so meaty that y'all better be sure your mouth is free of open wounds. In this occasion, I was persuaded by the very efficient & personable garçon, that the fried chicken & waffles is a new item and worth the venture. It did not hurt that I nearly got whiplash from seeing a plate of the very same served to a gentleman who looked like he was winning at life. So it was, for the chicken, I would bear the travails of waffles. The plate came, abundantly presented with potatoes so creamy on the inside it would give certain acting "professionals" a run for their money, it was nicely crusted on the outside with some kind of mystery sweetness I didn't dare question (Type 2 you understand). As you can see the chook legs, which were reassuringly normal in size and hence a perfection of fried skin and just the right amount of meat (vs you know, steroid sized birds) were gone in no time at all. And as it so happened that my partner decided to have a little episode (something about not realizing his meat had onions which he loathes) , I was left alone with the glory of my meal. I had the waffles, finally, and oh my, these are different. These are airy, with the grid lines nicely crisp but still beautifully soft, simply put somehow the damn kitchen wizards at Queen's seems to have made this in the same spirit of a cannelé without the hard caramelization. People, it was wondrous. Anywho, garçon who was concerned over my partner suddenly abandoning his meal and moi, made every effort to find out what was wrong. And the truth is, nothing was wrong at all I reassured him, it's not you honey, it's him. He sent me away with a little bag of ricotta pancakes anyway, which I neither expected nor demanded. In conclusion, the food is amazing, a fantastic summary of the flavors from all the cultures in this land, and the service is well, probably worth the XP healing points of 2 therapy sessions. First off: loved the food. Let's get that straight. No notes. When I arrived for brunch on Sunday, I let the hostess know that my friend made a reservation. She located the reservation. I was the first to arrive, so she had me wait in the front vestibule area. When I saw two walk-in parties being seated right away, I asked if they had a policy of "everyone must arrive before seated" policy -- she said: "No, your table is ready and has been for fifteen minutes -- would you like to sit at the table?" No. I want to wait at the door like a dog for my people to arrive. Yes, I would like to sit at our table. When we arrived at the table, a waiter followed us there and madly began spritzing the table with cleanser. The hostess said the to the waiter: "Oh! I thought it was ready!" No worries. As I sat, she informed me that we had an hour to eat. I understand the necessity to keep tables rotating and to discourage people from lingering, but I've always found that "Enjoy yourself but get the Hell out after an hour" disclaimer to be very unwelcoming. Fast forward an hour an half; my friends and I got caught up and enjoyed a delicious brunch. The same hostess came over and said: "We'd like to invite you to our bar area so we can use this table." Wow. We just spent $60 (each) for brunch and we're getting the bum's rush? Is there a more hospitable way to treat customers? Again: I fully get that a restaurant's profits depend on quick rotation. I'm wondering about a more customer-centric approach to not make the diner feel like they're imposing and might be inclined to spend more money there in the future? read more
